Blízko k play-off mají v olympijské kvalifikaci smíšených dvojic curleři Julie Zelingrová a Vít Chabičovský. Ti v kanadské Kelowně porazili v předposledním utkání základní části 8:4 Německo. • Hannah Lim and Ye Quan - President's Rankings

Quan: We feel good. There were a lot more people than usual for Ranking and so that was very exciting, very energizing. We’re really happy that we could perform in front of all these fans that came to support us.

Lim: After the previous competition, we didn’t go back to Canada. We came straight to Korea and continued to train at Taeneung. In the morning, we got to see the other Team Korea athletes, and since we are close friends, we were very happy.

Quan: We make sure to write down every day what we want to do – kind of like a detailed schedule so we know every time what we have to do and when we have to do it. It's kind of an agenda. We also have video calls with our coaches in Montreal to plan everything and make sure that mentally both of us are okay and are able to manage everything.

The team plans on competing at 4CCs

    On representing South Korea:

Quan: I’m really motivated and proud to represent South Korea. Obviously, it also makes us more motivated to aim for the Olympic games and to keep promoting Ice Dance in South Korea. I think overall we’re really proud and happy."

"I think this season, the biggest goal for both of us up to now, was to get the technical points higher. Before being junior we didn't need to think about it—it was working. Starting senior was kind of okay and then starting this season [the judging] got more strict and our levels were lower than usual, and we thought that we really had to focus a lot more on our technical quality just making sure they are consistent. Not just doing it once and it's okay, but doing it five, ten times, and I think that's the biggest hurdle we've come around so far. We've done two months of preparation after Osaka up to Chongqing in China, and I think that really paid off and that the technical aspect is getting stronger and more consistent."

On how they feel with the upcoming Olympics:

Quan: It's exciting and stressful at the same time. When we qualified at worlds last year, it was like “we qualified” but it didn’t feel as real as right now. Now it's like in about 2-3 months we’re going to be at the Olympics! It's a lot closer than what I anticipated from my career and very happy about that.

Lim: I feel like for me I’m not going to believe it until I’m on the plane to Italy. So, for now, it feels close, but it doesn't feel close.

  • Hosokawa entered Los Angeles as Japan’s top contender at -60 kg. What almost nobody knew was that he was carrying a serious rib injury from training shortly before the Olympics. The cartilage around the rib was damaged enough that twisting, gripping, and even breathing sharply caused pain. His team considered pulling him out, but he refused.

In the semifinal he faced Kim Jae-Yup, an explosive Korean judoka who would later become Olympic champion in 1988. Kim was young, aggressive, and famous for his brutal seoi-nage entries. Hosokawa, fighting with restricted movement, had to rely on perfect timing and footwork. He won, but the effort pushed his injury to the limit.

By the time he reached the final against Neil Eckersley, the pain was so strong that he couldn’t rotate his upper body normally. Still, he stepped onto the tatami and executed one of the cleanest, most precise seoi-nage sequences of the entire tournament. His kuzushi was flawless. His commitment was absolute. He secured the victory and became Olympic champion.

What people didn’t see were the X-rays afterward showing the level of damage he had fought through, or the hours of training he completed without being able to sleep properly because of the pain.

Hosokawa’s gold medal wasn’t just a technical victory. It was a demonstration of how far an athlete can push when everything hurts and quitting would have been the logical choice.

Most champions win with their best weapons. Hosokawa won with one of them almost taken away.
