Caught Sofya Samodelkina after winning silver at the Grand Prix in Japan.
Right now I am in Kazakhstan, I need to resolve some document issues and deal with my knee after the injury. The plan includes an MRI, various examinations, and rehabilitation.
I actually got injured not on difficult jumps, which is very frustrating: it was a regular practice, I had already finished all my jumps, cleanly landed a triple Axel, performed two clean runs of my programs—and on the simplest exercise, a spread eagle, I suddenly twisted my knee. It cracked loudly.
Almost a month was spent on recovery, but before the tournament in Japan, we even managed to work intensively together with She-Lynn [Bourne] on the short program.
I am incredibly grateful to Rafael Vladimirovich [Arutyunyan] for coming with me to Japan. When he stands by the boards, it gives me a completely different level of confidence. He gave me a second chance in sports, reached out his hand, and showed me who I can become. I deeply appreciate this opportunity.
Of course, I am happy that everything went so well at the NHK Trophy: yes, the performance wasn’t perfect, but I showed the maximum of what I was capable of after the injury. I didn’t expect to get silver; after the scores, I immediately called my parents and psychologist—and cried with happiness.
I really want to get back to training with Rafael Vladimirovich as soon as possible; we have so much to do.
If I get an invitation to the stage in Finland, we will urgently change plans, of course. But I have already gotten used to being ready for anything. I don’t even get jet lag anymore; night—sleep, day—train, no matter which country I am in. We also have a December tournament in Zagreb planned, so even if the Grand Prix stage doesn’t work out, I have plenty to work on.
Sofya has excellent chances for the second stage in Finland. The field there is strong, and to win a medal (and thus have a chance at the Grand Prix Final), she will need to give her best.
But Samodelkina knows how to do that.
