Inside the Beverage Can

Beverage packaging runs at incredible production speeds, with lines regularly processing thousands of aluminum units every minute. The coating process requires liquid-state polymers to be applied via ultra-high-speed internal spray guns. The coating must dry and crosslink within seconds under precise thermal profiling.

The primary structural challenge here is managing internal carbonation pressure and the corrosive nature of ingredients like phosphoric acid found in soft drinks. The coating must remain perfectly continuous across ultra-thin, lightweight aluminum substrates, ensuring zero microscopic pinholes where gas could escape or corrosion could start.

The Harsh Thermal Retort Environment of Food Cans

Food cans operate under different physical demands. After a can is filled with contents like meat, beans, or vegetables, it undergoes thermal retort processing—a sterilization method where the entire sealed unit is heated to temperatures over 121°C under pressure.

As outlined in the Food Grade Metal Coating Market documentation, these coatings must survive intense heat without peeling, blistering, or transferring any volatile components into the product. They also need to resist sulfur staining, which occurs when proteins break down during heating and release sulfur ions that can discolor raw metal.
