The Engineering Challenge of Mono-Material Design
The primary obstacle to recycling traditional yogurt containers is material contamination. A standard retail cup often combines a polystyrene body with a paper label and an aluminum foil lid. When a consumer throws the unwashed cup into a recycling bin, these mixed materials are difficult for automated sorting centers to separate, causing the entire container to be sent to landfills.
To solve this issue, packaging engineers are developing mono-material structures. These next-generation containers use a single polymer family—typically polypropylene (PP)—for the cup body, the label, and the lidding film.
