Segmentation by Deployment Model: SaaS vs. On-Premises

A fundamental way to classify Breach and Attack Simulation Solution Market Types is by their deployment model, which typically falls into two main categories: SaaS and on-premises. The Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model has become the dominant deployment type. In this approach, the BAS management and analytics engine is hosted in the cloud by the vendor. Customers subscribe to the service and deploy lightweight software agents on their endpoints and servers, which then communicate back to the cloud platform. This model offers significant advantages, including rapid deployment, no upfront hardware costs, automatic updates to the attack library, and easy scalability. It is the preferred model for most businesses due to its simplicity and lower total cost of ownership. The on-premises deployment type involves installing the entire BAS platform, including the management console, on servers within the organization's own data center. This model is chosen by organizations with very strict data residency requirements or "air-gapped" environments where cloud connectivity is not possible or permitted. This includes some government agencies, defense contractors, and financial institutions. While it offers maximum control over the system and its data, it requires more upfront investment and ongoing maintenance from the customer, making it a more niche market segment.

Categorization by Application and Attack Vector Focus

The BAS market can also be segmented by the primary application or the attack vectors that the solution focuses on simulating. While many platforms aim to be comprehensive, they often have specific strengths. Endpoint Security Simulation is a major market type. These solutions focus on testing the effectiveness of endpoint security controls like antivirus (AV) and endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions. They simulate the dropping and execution of malware, ransomware behavior, and privilege escalation techniques on user workstations and servers. Email Security Simulation is another critical type. These platforms are designed to test the efficacy of secure email gateways by sending simulated phishing emails, malicious attachments, and spam to see if they are successfully blocked before reaching the user's inbox. Network Security Simulation focuses on testing the security of the internal network. This involves simulating lateral movement between different network segments, testing firewall rules, and validating network segmentation policies. Cloud Security Simulation is a rapidly growing type that focuses on testing the security posture of public cloud environments like AWS, Azure, and GCP. This includes simulating attacks that exploit common cloud misconfigurations, insecure IAM policies, and vulnerabilities in cloud-native services. A comprehensive BAS solution will typically cover all of these types, but some vendors may specialize in one or two areas.

Segmentation by Service Offering: Platform vs. Managed Service

Another important way to segment the market is by how the solution is consumed by the customer: as a technology platform or as a managed service. The platform type is the standard model, where an organization purchases a license or subscription to the BAS software and their own in-house security team is responsible for deploying, managing, and acting on the results. This model is suitable for organizations that have a mature security operations center (SOC) and the necessary personnel to manage the tool and the remediation process. It provides the organization with maximum control and direct access to all the data and analytics. The managed service type, often called "Security Validation as a Service" or "BAS as a Service," is a growing segment. In this model, an organization outsources the entire BAS function to a Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) or to the vendor's own professional services team. The service provider is responsible for running the simulations, analyzing the results, and providing the customer with a regular report of findings and prioritized recommendations. This model is ideal for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) or other organizations that lack the in-house expertise or resources to manage a BAS platform themselves. It allows them to gain the benefits of continuous security validation without the operational overhead.

Market Types by Integration and Automation Capability

Finally, the market can be typed by the level of integration and automation the solution provides, which is often a key differentiator between basic and advanced platforms. Basic BAS tools may function as standalone assessment platforms. They run their simulations and produce a report showing which attacks succeeded and which failed. The remediation process is then left entirely up to the security team to handle manually. Advanced BAS platforms, on the other hand, are designed to be deeply integrated into the broader security operations ecosystem. This market type is characterized by a rich library of APIs and pre-built integrations with other security tools. For example, an advanced BAS platform can integrate with a vulnerability management tool to correlate attack simulations with known CVEs. It can integrate with a SIEM to verify that the SIEM is generating the correct alerts for a given attack. Most importantly, it can integrate with a SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response) platform. This allows for the creation of "closed-loop" automation, where the discovery of a critical attack path by the BAS tool can automatically trigger a SOAR playbook to, for example, isolate a machine from the network or apply a new firewall rule. This level of integration transforms the BAS platform from a simple testing tool into an active hub for automating and orchestrating security posture improvements, representing the high end of the market.
