PETs are a category of technologies that are designed to minimize the collection of personal data and maximize data security. They are about implementing privacy at a technical, cryptographic level. Examples of PETs that are being incorporated into privacy management platforms include homomorphic encryption, which allows for computation on encrypted data without ever decrypting it; differential privacy, which adds statistical noise to datasets to allow for aggregate analysis without revealing individual information; and zero-knowledge proofs, which allow one party to prove to another that a statement is true without revealing any information beyond the validity of the statement itself.
