How Justin Thomas, Davis Riley performed during first round of Masters
On Thursday, the 2026 Masters Tournament officially began from Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. An annual event which draws the attention of the sports world, this year's edition of the Masters features a pair of former Alabama golfers in Justin Thomas and Davis Riley both in the playing field, each of which were in action to play their first 18 holes Thursday afternoon.Following is a look at how both Thomas and Riley performed during the first round, as well as where each now sits on the leaderboard entering an important Friday in Augusta. Justin ThomasThomas had a solid first day in Augusta, as the two-time major champion shot even par (E) to finish the day with a 72. Thomas' first round features two birdies on the front nine, followed by a pair of bogeys on the back nine, and despite sitting in a good spot currently tied-19th overall entering Friday, will still need to play well to ensure that he makes the cut in order to advance to play the weekend. The former Alabama standout is set to begin his second round Friday morning, teeing off at 10:07 a.m. ET. Thomas will be playing with Sepp Straka and Ben Griffin. Davis RileyRiley struggled a bit during his first round of action Thursday, shooting an 82 to finish the day at 10-over par (+10). As a result, Riley, whose first round featured one birdie, five bogeys, and three double bogeys, now enters Friday sitting at 89th overall for the tournament, and will likely need an outstanding second round in order to make the cut. That important second round for Riley is set to begin early Friday morning when he officially tees off at 8:26 a.m. ET. Riley will be paired with Danny Willett and Ethan Fang. Tatum back at Madison Square Garden for 1st time since injury, but Celtics without Brown vs. Knicks
Jayson Tatum is set to play at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night for the first time since rupturing his Achilles tendon there in last season's playoffs. He'll be without teammate Jaylen Brown, though, as the Celtics ruled him out of their showdown against the New York Knicks with left Achilles tendinitis. The Celtics will lock up the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference with a victory, a position that many thought was unrealistic because they would be playing for at least most of the season without Tatum. He was hurt last May 12 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals when he fell to the court in the fourth quarter of a Knicks victory. New York went on to win the series, ending the Celtics championship reign.Tatum went through the Celtics' morning shootaround at MSG on Thursday and told reporters afterward that he felt nervousness, anxiousness. All the things you probably would expect.Asked how he would get through it, he added: I think it's just deciding to face the challenge head-on and put my uniform on.Tatum returned March 6 and has played in 15 games, averaging 21.6 points and 9.8 rebounds. He said after the Celtics' home victory over Charlotte on Tuesday that he wasn't thrilled to go back and play at Madison Square Garden.Last time I played there, obviously, it was a traumatic experience for me, he added.Tatum drew plenty of spectators as he went through his pregame warmups near the Celtics bench. Coach Joe Mazzulla said he had a chance to talk to his star forward earlier in the day and praised the way he was preparing for the game.I think one of his greatest strengths is just his vulnerability and openness and his understanding. Its an opportunity tonight and obviously another small checkmark in his journey, which hes done a great job handling those, and expect him to be able to do the same tonight, Mazzulla said. Theres both, right? Theres a ton of emotions but also opportunity and I think hes ready for that. Brown helped carry the Celtics through Tatum's absence with a superb season. The All-Star is averaging 28.8 points in 70 games.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/nba

Harry Maguire must go to the World Cup as his latest admission proves why the Man Utd star is a national hero - analysis by Ed Griffiths
Harry Maguire has long been a figure to divide England and Manchester United fans with the turbulent periods he has endured at Old Trafford.Since joining Manchester United in 2019 for a then-record 80million for a defender, performances have been mixed. While he has often remained a key figure for England, his club career has been characterised by intense scrutiny under several different managers. After being named captain just five months after his arrival, Maguire faced immense pressure and following the arrival of Erik ten Hag, his form dipped, he fell out of favour, and was officially stripped of the club captaincy in July 2023.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayWith the World Cup looming and the Three Lions' staple defender seemingly back at his best, England fans remain divided over whether Thomas Tuchel should take, or even start, the 33-year-old.Despite some doubt, Maguire maintains unwavering confidence in his abilities. The defender, speaking to journalists at Manchester United's training camp in Ireland, said: "I still believe, even at my age, I'm arguably one of the best defenders in the world in both boxes."Following confirmation of his new contract extension this week, Maguire reflected on his seven seasons with the club and argued that six of those campaigns were successful, expressing frustration that his career is often framed as a redemption narrative rather than one of sustained performance. He said: "I'd have loved seven out of seven, and not had this little blip along the way and everyone won't be speaking about it as much."The England centre-back is eager to secure a place in Thomas Tuchel's squad for this summer's World Cup, which would mark his third appearance at the tournament. However, the new England manager has made clear that Maguire currently sits fifth in the defensive hierarchy, behind Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, John Stones and the injured Trevoh Chalobah.Maguire continued: "I'm desperate to go, whatever role the manager would want me for, whether that's starting or whether it's deciding games late on."Tuchel could be taking a huge risk not involving the Manchester United man partly due to his goal threat. Maguire holds the record for the all-time highest-scoring defender for the England national team, having scored 7 goals in 66 caps. His international fortunes have improved recently, with a call-up in March ending an 18-month absence from the national setup. He played the full match against Uruguay before appearing as a late substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Japan.LATEST SPORT NEWS:Cristiano Ronaldo dragged into Saudi league cheating claims as England star launches scathing attackNike admits World Cup kit flaw as England shirt among those affected despite huge priceFA in Pride court fight over 'gender politics' in footballMaguire acknowledged that the intense criticism and ridicule he faced during his difficult spell would have defeated most footballers. When asked directly whether his experiences might have broken other players, he responded: "Yeah, probably. There'll be a lot who want to maybe just close the book and just go elsewhere and restart their career. I think it's probably broken them a little bit earlier."The defender has witnessed teammates struggle under the weight of expectation at Old Trafford. He explained: "I see a lot of players come into this club and quite frankly it's just too big for them. The eyes on you, the scrutiny, the analysis. Every goal that goes in, it's someone's fault."His resurgence under Michael Carrick since mid-January has helped United climb to third place in the league. His darkest moment came at Hampden Park in September 2023, when Scotland supporters greeted his introduction as a substitute with mocking cheers, which, despite his decent performance, led to a deflected Andy Robertson cross into his own net, compounding the humiliation during England's 3-1 victory.Maguire said: "That was probably the lowest point, but it's part of the journey."His mother Zoe felt compelled to defend her son on social media, describing the treatment as "disgraceful and unacceptable".Maguire attempted to dissuade her but was overruled: "I didn't want her to, but she just said, 'I'm doing it! I'm not listening to you!'"But it is this optimism and pride in representing the national team that make Maguire an unsung hero. Many of the Three Lions have fallen out of world-class status, and Tuchel faces a real problem with individuals dipping in confidence. But the Manchester United star is not one of them. He believes he is amongst the best in the world, and that is exactly what we need heading into the 2026 World Cup across the Atlantic. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
