The winner at the Food City 500 on Sunday wasn't just any winner. It was filled with meaning and importance. It represented Ty Gibbs' first NASCAR Cup Series race victory, and a tribute and celebration to the entire Gibbs family. "What a moment for the Gibbs family," Kevin Harvick said on the latest episode of "SPEED with Harvick and Buxton." "Yeah, man, felt like an emotional one, a really meaningful one," Buxton added. That's because one of the last times Gibbs won a race, his father, and team owner Joe Gibbs' son, Coy, passed away the following day. Coy's unexpected passing came following Ty Gibbs' victory at the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship in Phoenix. His passing still looms large in the NASCAR community. His presence was certainly felt by that community on Sunday, but especially the Gibbs' family as Ty's mom, Heather, was in Bristol, Tenn., to witness her son's victory. "For a family that's put their life into motor racing after Joe's original career, but had to deal with so much loss, I think for Ty to win his first race, and for his mom to be there, and to know how happy his dad would have been with that win, and how proud he would have been they know how much that meant to them, and how much that meant to Ty," Harvick said on "SPEED." It was a fitting victory, and a longtime coming for Ty Gibbs and Joe Gibbs Racing, who struggled throughout the 2025 Cup season. Last year, Gibbs started the season with a DNF. He didn't finish inside the top 10 until the GOODYEAR 400 on April 6th. The team struggled with car performance and crew chief Tyler Allen's inexperience showed, Harvick said. But as the season continued, they started to find a groove. Gibbs, driver of the No. 54 car, finished third at the Food City 500 lin 2025, a harbinger of sorts. He was third at the Firekeepers Casino 400, and second at the Grant Park 165. He finished in the top 10 in the next two races after that. He closed the season with a third-place finish at the Yellawood 500. Gibbs carried that momentum into this season, culminating in Sunday's victory. "This win has been in the making for a while," Harvick said. It's a victory that mimics so many others that make NASCAR a special sport. "Racing is a family business," Buxton said. "Nobody gets started without the support of their family, and so often there's legacies and there's lineages in racing. In NASCAR, that's such a huge part of the championship. There's so many of these great dynasties, and incredible stories of fathers and sons and racing legacies, and racing names. PITTSBURGH Paul Skenes spent last season pitching on a razors edge, aware that one mistake could tilt the balance of a game, no matter how masterful the Pittsburgh Pirates ace might be.Not anymore.The offense that struggled to score whenever Skenes took the hill in 2025 the main reason he had a 10-10 record alongside the 1.97 ERA that won him the National League Cy Young Award has been transformed, both in personnel and in production, in 2026.It reached the point during a 16-5 victory over Washington that Skenes was sort of hoping the Pirates would stop hitting during a 10-run sixth, if only so he could get back to work.No such luck. By the time the inning was over, 14 batters had come to the plate, the Nationals had switched pitchers twice, and the clock for Skenes (3-1) to return to the mound had run out after six innings of brilliance.It just took forever, which is what you want, Skenes said. I feel like that inning everybody (was) just pulling the rope and passing it off to the next guy. It was cool to watch.A year ago, the worst offense in the majors produced three runs or fewer 18 times in Skenes 32 starts. Gets the crowd a little loud. To watch his at-bats, to see the maturity that he has with the power and everything else he has going for him, hes going to be a lot of fun to hit behind this year.And the Pirates could be dangerous for the first time in a long time. Skenes already is seeing the difference. Pittsburgh has scored 38 runs across his first four starts in 2026 after needing 11 starts to hit that total in 2025.I told the guys after the game it makes it easy to pitch, Skenes said.It also lets him take chances and evolve. He became the fifth-fastest pitcher in major league history to reach 400 strikeouts when he fanned Luis Garcia Jr. just two batters into his 59th start.Save for a 100 mph heater that Washingtons CJ Abrams sent into the seats over the 21-foot-high Clemente Wall in right in the first, Skenes was nearly perfect as he mixed his fastball with reliable offspeed stuff.I mean we might go out next outing and only throw changeups, Skenes said, joking he might throw 100 in a row when he makes his next start against the Rays.Probably not. But having another pitch he can trust is hardly a bad thing. Neither is the freedom that comes with knowing he doesnt have to be flawless for the Pirates to have a shot.The victory over the Nationals came just over 24 hours after Pittsburgh allowed the host Chicago Cubs to rally and avoid a sweep. The Pirates responded with their best offensive performance of the season and offered a glimpse of the resilience it will take if they want to get to where they want to go.Ive seen it now for a couple years with the Brewers, the Cubs, the Reds last year made the playoffs, Skenes said. Thats what NL Central teams do really well, and so now were doing that. Its really fun to watch.
