Hugo Ekitike reportedly suffered ruptured Achilles, set to miss World Cup
Hugo Ekitike will miss the 2026 World Cup for France after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon during Champions League play on Tuesday, according to ESPNs Julien Laurens. The Liverpool forward went down with a non-contact injury during the first half of their quarterfinal loss to Barcelona. Minutes after being tended to by medical personnel, Ekitike was stretchered off and replaced by Mohamed Salah.Ekitike, 23, is scheduled for scans on Wednesday to determine the severity of the injury. The estimated recovery period for the injury is 9-12 months. It doesnt look good, Liverpool manager Arne Slot said after the match. Its difficult for me to say how bad. That timeframe would rule Ekitike out of consideration for France's World Cup team this summer. In eight appearances on the international level, he has two goals. He recently saw action in both of France's recent friendlies against Brazil and Colombia.Ekitike, who is in his first season with Liverpool after joining last summer from Eintracht Frankfurt, has 17 goals in all competitions this season.

Bayern Munich tries to finish off Real Madrid as Bellingham gets start in Champions League
Bayern Munich is primed to finish the job against embattled Real Madrid in a bid to reach the Champions League semifinals on the way to a potential treble of trophies from an outstanding season. The Bavarian powerhouse holds a 2-1 lead over Madrid from the first leg of their quarterfinal last week, and coach Vincent Kompany had nearly a full squad at his disposal for Wednesdays second leg with no injuries after Bayern smashed the Bundesliga goals record with a 5-0 rout of St. Pauli last weekend. That victory put Bayern within touching distance of yet another league title the 13th in 14 years while it faces Bayer Leverkusen in the semifinals of the German Cup on April 22.Kompany was starting with the same team that defeated Madrid last week, with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer who had an outstanding game making his 137th Champions League appearance. Only Madrid great Iker Casillas played more with 149 appearances in the competition.Tom Bischof was the only absentee from Bayern's squad with a calf injury after the club said last week Lennart Karl was out with a hamstring injury.Madrid coach lvaro Arbeloa made four changes to the team that lost to Bayern last week, with Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde in midfield for Thiago Pitarch and the suspended Aurlien Tchouamni. Ferland Mendy replaces left-back lvaro Carreras and Brahim Daz lines up on the right where Valverde had been.Bayerns excellence this season contrasts sharply with Madrids troubles. The 15-time European champion faces the prospect of a second straight season without a trophy unless it beats Bayern away by two goals in what is sure to be a hostile environment in Munich.Madrid was held 1-1 at home by Girona last weekend, allowing Barcelona to open a nine-point lead in La Liga, after its third straight game without a win.Kylian Mbapp received a blow to his face at the end of that match but will be able to play as Madrid attempts a famed remontada (comeback) to salvage the tie and keep alive its hopes of a trophy in the competition that defines the club.We are the team that never gives up, Arbeloa said.___AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

EFL club announce week-long emergency loan deal ahead of title decider
Cambridge United has secured the services of goalkeeper Jack Walton on a week-long emergency loan arrangement from Championship outfit Preston North End.The 27-year-old shot-stopper arrives at Abbey Stadium ahead of a pivotal League Two encounter at promotion rivals Bromley on Thursday evening.Neil Harris's side currently occupy third position in the table and have the opportunity to reduce the gap to league leaders Bromley to just three points with victory at Hayes Lane. The temporary deal was necessitated after Cambridge's regular number one, Jake Eastwood, received his marching orders during Saturday's comprehensive 4-0 triumph over Notts County.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayThe 29-year-old Eastwood was dismissed for handling the ball outside his penalty area during the weekend victory at Abbey Stadium.Ben Hughes came off the substitutes' bench to replace him and delivered what Harris described as an outstanding performance on his full league debut. However, the Cambridge manager felt that asking the young goalkeeper to start such a critical fixture would represent too significant a risk.Harris explained to the BBC: "To ask him to go again in such a pivotal game would have been a real big ask for him and a real huge gamble."The club therefore explored options to bring in a more experienced goalkeeper.Harris expressed his appreciation to Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom for sanctioning the temporary move. The Cambridge boss said: "Truly grateful to Paul Heckingbottom and the guys there to loan a first-time goalkeeper to us."The U's manager spoke highly of his new arrival's credentials, noting that Walton brings considerable experience from his time north of the border.LATEST SPORT NEWSPremier League side snubs EFL boss and accelerate discussions to appoint former Bundesliga managerLIV Golf holds emergency meeting in New York amid rumours of immediate end of rebel tourReal Madrid icon dies as statement sparks tributes for 'one of greatest legends in world'Harris said: "Jack comes with a high pedigree, a lot of football played - not so much in the last few months, but some football played in the first half of the season, and a hell of a lot of football played in the last few years up in Scotland.""The lad was ever so excited about coming. "Was desperate to come and play and has got the character and the mindset to do it, so it's a strong starting point."Walton joined Preston during the summer from Luton Town and has featured five times for the Championship club this campaign, including three league appearances and two Carabao Cup outings. The goalkeeper, who started his career at Barnsley and enjoyed loan stints at Stalybridge Celtic and Dundee United, could make his Cambridge debut at Hayes Lane on Thursday.Should Bromley secure victory, Andy Woodman's side will clinch promotion to League One for the first time in their history.Cambridge, seeking an immediate return to the third tier following last season's relegation, could also utilise Walton for home matches against Grimsby on April 21 and Barrow four days later. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
