Novak Djokovic makes worrying French Open admission after shock Italy Open defeat
Novak Djokovic suffered a stunning second-round defeat at the Italian Open on Friday, falling to 20-year-old Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in what marks an unprecedented setback for the Serbian star in Rome. The loss represents the first time in 19 appearances that the six-time champion has been eliminated in his opening match at the tournamentDjokovic, currently ranked fourth in the world, was competing for the first time since his fourth-round exit at Indian Wells in March, having withdrawn from events in Miami, Monte Carlo and Madrid whilst recovering from a shoulder injury.Furthermore, after speaking to the media following the defeat, the Serbian admitted he does not know if he will be ready for the gruelling test ahead of him at the French Open. The opening set proved comfortable for Djokovic, who wrapped it up in approximately 40 minutes after breaking his opponent's serve twice whilst dominating the longer exchanges. However, the momentum shifted dramatically as the second set began, with Prizmic breaking to love immediately before racing into a commanding 3-0 advantage.Djokovic appeared increasingly troubled physically as the match progressed, visibly grimacing and taking pills for what seemed to be stomach discomfort. The world number 79 carried his confidence into the decider, securing a crucial break at 2-2 before holding his nerve to close out the victory with an ace after two hours and 15 minutes.Prior to the match, Djokovic had acknowledged his concerns about his physical condition, stating: "I am not the happiest with the level of tennis or the movement or the physical state, but it is getting there."The 38-year-old explained that he had hoped to return to competition earlier but was forced to manage his recovery carefully.Following the defeat, Djokovic was candid about his limitations, admitting he was "late half a step" and not where he needed to be to compete at the highest level. When asked whether he would be fit for Roland Garros, the 24-time Grand Slam champion offered an uncertain response: "I don't know, I hope so."Prizmic spoke with evident emotion about defeating his childhood hero, telling interviewers: "For me, it is hard to [know what to] say."I have big respect for Novak. He is my idol, so it was a great match for me today."The young Croatian added that Djokovic had offered encouragement after the match, telling him his forehand had improved significantly and predicting he could achieve great things if he remains injury-free.Prizmic arrives in Rome with growing momentum, having claimed his first top-ten scalp against Ben Shelton at the Madrid Open last month. The defeat leaves Djokovic with just one clay-court match under his belt ahead of the French Open, which commences on 24 May.Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter

Cruise ship passenger describes uncertainty after 3 deaths amid hantavirus probe
A passenger aboard a cruise ship where three people have died is speaking out, describing fear and uncertainty as the vessel remains off the coast of Cape Verde and the cause of a suspected hantavirus outbreak remains under investigation."I am currently on board the m/v Hondius, and whats happening right now is very real for all of us here," the passenger said. "Were not just a story, were not just headlines were people with families, with lives, with people waiting for us at home.""Theres a lot of uncertainty, and thats the hardest part. All we want right now is to feel safe, to have clarity and to get home," he added. "So if youre seeing coverage about this, just remember that there are real people behind it and that this isnt something happening somewhere far away. Its happening to us right now."The World Health Organization (WHO) said Sunday that one case of hantavirus infection has been laboratory confirmed, while five additional suspected cases are pending. Of the six people affected, three have died and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa.HANTAVIRUS DEATHS ON CRUISE SHIP HIGHLIGHT DANGERS OF RODENT-BORNE DISEASEThe vessel, m/v Hondius, remains off the coast of Cape Verde as authorities work to determine whether the cases are connected and when those requiring medical care will be allowed to disembark.Oceanwide Expeditions, which operates the ship, released a timeline of the incident on Monday, showing the situation has unfolded over several weeks.According to the company, a Dutch passenger died on April 11, though the cause of death could not be determined at the time. That individual was later disembarked on St. Helena on April 24.CRUISE SHIP OUTBREAK LEAVES 3 DEAD AS OFFICIALS DELAY MEDICAL EVACUATIONS AND PROBE HANTAVIRUS THREATOn April 27, the cruise line said the passengers wife, also Dutch, became ill during her return journey and later died. It has not been confirmed whether those deaths are connected to the current situation. Also on April 27, another passenger became seriously ill and was medically evacuated to South Africa, where the individual remains in intensive care. A variant of hantavirus has been identified in that patient, who is of British nationality, the cruise line said.A third passenger, who was German, died on May 2, though the cause has not yet been established.CDC INVESTIGATES NEW CRUISE SHIP OUTBREAK AFTER DOZENS REPORT GASTROINTESTINAL ILLNESSTwo crew members on board one British and one Dutch are also experiencing acute respiratory symptoms and require urgent medical care, the company said.At this time, hantavirus has not been confirmed in the two individuals still on board who need treatment, and officials have not established a link between the virus and the three deaths. The ship remains at sea with 149 people on board, representing more than 20 nationalities, as medical evacuations and disembarkation require approval from local health authorities. The company said it is working with local and international authorities, including the WHO, as it prepares for possible medical repatriation and next steps. Officials are also considering sailing the vessel to Las Palmas or Tenerife, where disembarkation and further medical screening could take place."Strict precautionary measures are in process on board, including isolation measures, hygiene protocols and medical monitoring," the company said. "All passengers have been informed and are being supported.""We are in close contact with those directly involved and their families, and are providing support where possible," the company added.
