ESPN: Saints rookie offensive lineman could make 'instant impact'
Did the New Orleans Saints just pick a new starter in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft? Former Auburn Tigers right guard Jeremiah Wright has an uphill battle ahead of him if he's going to replace Cesar Ruiz in the starting lineup, but he might have a chance to do just that. ESPN's Field Yates highlighted Wright as one of this year's late-round picks who could make an instant impact:"The Saints wanted to get tougher, nastier and more physical during the draft and did exactly that by adding Wright at the end of Round 4. The hulking 6-foot-5, 331-pounder mostly anchored the right guard spot for Auburn, showing off serious power in the running game. His competitive spirit was visible at practices during Senior Bowl week, and he should be in the running for early snaps in New Orleans' offense."Wright was a standout at the Senior Bowl -- Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas, head coach of the American Team at the all-star game, singled him out for a one-on-one matchup with his Alabama rival LT Overton (who ended up being drafted five slots behind him). Wright won the rep:Throwback to when Jeremiah Wright started turning heads with the Saints coaching staff in Mobile Safe to say they liked what they saw.@thatjeremiah771 | @Saints | @AuburnFootball#TheDraftStartsInMobilepic.twitter.com/fMBHxvpp5V Panini Senior Bowl (@seniorbowl) May 8, 2026Wright plays with the exact kind of mean streak he'll need to succeed in the NFL, but he needs more reps. He initially played on the Auburn defensive line in 2020 before suffering a knee injury that sidelined him for all of 2021. When he healed up, Auburn's coaching staff had turned over and he moved to the offensive line full-time, but he didn't start a full season until 2024. Now he's a 25-year old rookie with just two seasons of starter's reps behind him. He's landed in a good spot to develop and push Ruiz, but it may be too much to expect Wright to start in September. As for Ruiz? He's seen the criticism of his play, and he's taken it to heart. He's eager to prove he's the best option the team has at right guard. At the same time, it's telling that the Saints have not restructured his contract like they have with other veterans. If Wright or another backup like Dillon Radunz outcompetes Ruiz at training camp, the Saints could trade Ruiz and save $9.5 million against this year's salary cap, with over $4.7 million freeing up next year. They could also choose to ride it out if no team steps up with a compelling offer and make a decision on his contract in 2027. Either way, Wright is waiting in the wings. This article originally appeared on Saints Wire: 2026 NFL Draft: Jeremiah Wright to compete for Saints starting job

Alex Fitzpatrick narrowly misses out on PGA Tour history after Truist Championship crumble
Alex Fitzpatrick came agonisingly close to making golfing history at Quail Hollow on Sunday, but a devastating double bogey on the 17th hole saw his dreams slip away. The 27-year-old Englishman had carried a one-shot advantage into the final round of the Truist Championship, looking poised to become part of the first pair of brothers to win on the US circuit in the same year alongside Matt.Instead, Norwegian Kristoffer Reitan claimed the title on 15-under par, finishing two clear of Rickie Fowler and Nicolai Hojgaard.Fitzpatrick ended three shots adrift in solo fourth place after signing for a 73.His final round was a tale of two halves, and then some.Fitzpatrick's challenge looked to be unravelling early on, stumbling to three-over through just three holes after finding a divot with his drive on the second and something going wrong in his backswing on the third."In my head I'm thinking 'I could shoot 81 here'," he admitted afterwards. But he showed tremendous fight around the turn, rattling off three birdies in four holes from the 10th to surge back into a share of the lead. Then came the par-three 17th, the second-toughest hole all week, where a flubbed chip from the right side of the green resulted in that crushing double bogey.Despite the disappointment, Fitzpatrick refused to let it overshadow what's been an extraordinary run of form."It's still very surreal, I don't think I've woken up which is a good thing," he said. "Obviously I feel like it's crazy to be disappointed but somehow I'm a little disappointed."He walked away with more than 700,000 for his efforts and plenty of pride in how he'd competed."I'm disappointed not to have won, but I'm also really proud of myself for how I battled out there," Fitzpatrick reflected. "I have a lot more inner self-belief now."Fitzpatrick now turns his attention to Thursday's PGA Championship at Aronimink, where he'll make his debut in that particular major. It's been a whirlwind few weeks for the younger Fitzpatrick brother, who has banked more than 2m in just three weeks following his Hero Indian Open triumph and that memorable Zurich Classic victory alongside Matt.Having his sibling around has clearly made a difference."He's done everything that I want to do in the game, whether that's Ryder Cup and winning majors," Alex said. "That has given me a really good sense of what it takes."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
