We continue to believe in Mexico, and are optimistic [about] the potential to advance our investment responsibly."The spokesperson said the company plans to "re-engage stakeholders" as it works to develop "essential environmental infrastructure, the creation of thousands of local jobs, and community programs that support the people of Mexico."Royal Caribbean first unveiled Perfect Day Mexico in October 2024 as part of its expanding portfolio of cruise destinations. Meer dan 150 auto's op de baan, ouderwets ronkende motoren zonder elektrische knopjes en fans die op het circuit mochten staan tijdens de formatieronde: de 24 uur van de Nrburgring toonde een compleet andere kant van de autosport dan die we van de Formule 1 gewend zijn. Het was een evenement voor liefhebbers, zowel voor fans als coureurs. Weinig verplichtingen en 'puur racen', in plaats van een grand prix vol met 'boost-knopjes' en strenge regels. Kan de Formule 1 iets leren van het langeafstandracen, waar de tijd soms lijkt te hebben stilgestaan? Verschillende werelden Inspiratie voor andere vormen van autosport is er zeker. "Het is eigenlijk altijd al zo leuk geweest", weet voormalig endurance-coureur Jan Lammers. "Maar Max Verstappen heeft de aandacht met zijn deelname nu vol op de Nrburgring gevestigd." Lammers en Jeroen Bleekemolen, die zondag zelf zegevierde in de zogenaamde SP10-klasse, denken echter niet dat de Formule 1 meteen zal veranderen na het enthousiasme in de Eifel. "Het zijn nog steeds twee compleet verschillende werelden." Bleekemolen was blij verrast over de grote hoeveelheid fans langs de baan. "Veel mensen dachten: het is helemaal niet leuk om 24 uur naar auto's te kijken. Maar als je dan ziet dat het al die tijd spannend is, het er keihard aan toe gaat en er gekke dingen gebeuren, dan krijgen mensen een heel ander beeld." Lammers denkt dat de Formule 1 wel iets kan opsteken van hoe de race in Duitsland in beeld werd gebracht. "Het ging ook over de simpele dingen. De barbecues en het bier langs de baan kwamen in beeld. De afwisseling tussen de onboardcamera's, de beelden van het publiek en uit de pits waren erg mooi. F1 heeft iets om over na te denken." Toegankelijkheid Opvallend op de Nrburgring was hoe dichtbij het publiek kon komen. De startgrid stond in de uren voor de race vol met fans en tijdens de formatieronde mocht het publiek, met vuurwerk en al, de baan op om de rijders te groeten. Elk circuit opengooien lijkt wat optimistisch, maar volgens Bleekemolen zou de Formule 1 wel wat toegankelijker kunnen zijn. "De Nrburgring is een lang circuit, waarop je veel mensen kwijt kan. Er waren 352.000 fans, dat is op de meeste F1-banen niet mogelijk. Als dat wel zou kunnen, dan zouden de ticketprijzen omlaag kunnen. Het voordeel op de Nrburgring is dat het voor de gewone fans te betalen is." Verfrissende elementen "Die erehaag was enorm bijzonder", vindt Lammers. "Dat wil niet zeggen dat ze dat overal moeten doen, want het is een logistieke uitdaging en als er dan iemand niet teruggaat... maar zo waren er veel verfrissende elementen." "Ze proberen de F1 ook meer open te maken", stelt Bleekemolen. "Maar het is ook een beetje de magie van de F1 dat je nt dichtbij kan komen. Onder de Amerikaanse leiding gaat het meer om show en entertainment dan vroeger. F1 hoort gek genoeg een klein beetje onbereikbaar te zijn." Volgens Lammers, die zelf in 1988 de 24 uur van Le Mans won, kunnen ook de sportieve regels op de Nrburgring een voorbeeld zijn. "Er waren geen safetycars. De code-60 (waarbij je in een bepaalde sector 60 moet rijden na een incident) werkt gewoon prima. In de F1 noemen ze dat een virtual safetycar, maar als je in bepaalde bochten een code-60 hanteert, kun je vol blijven racen. We zagen dat het prima werkt." Geen gevaar voor Formule 1 In de eerste maanden van het huidige Formule 1-seizoen was er veel kritiek op de nieuwe regels. Door de grote invloed van elektrische energie in de motoren werd het inhalen vaak kunstmatig, coureurs gingen elkaar voorbij door op een knopje voor meer energie te drukken. Op de Nrburgring was daarvan geen sprake. Het was 24 uur voluit racen. Toch denkt Lammers niet dat de Formule 1 bang moet zijn fans te verliezen. "Je hebt het over compleet ander publiek, net als fans van MotoGP en motorcross." "Het publiek op de Nrburgring heeft een geweldige traktatie gekregen en de F1-fans hebben er ook van genoten. De endurance-wereld heeft er zeker veel fans bijgekregen, maar ik denk niet dat de F1 fans is kwijtgeraakt." Bleekemolen denkt wel dat de koningsklasse van de autosport 'niet te veel momentum moet verliezen'. "De F1 werd de laatste jaren veel populairder. Deels door Verstappen, maar ook vanwege de show en het feit dat het iets opener is. Maar we komen toch weer terug op de motorregels: ze moeten zorgen dat mensen daardoor niet afhaken. Ze begeven zich in gevaarlijk gebied."
