WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMUSA vs. Paraguay: Key Players, Projected Lineup, What To KnowA match eight years in the making since the USA was awarded hosting rights for the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico on the eve of the 2018 tournament is finally here. The Americans begin Group D play on Friday against Paraguay in Los Angeles with an abundance of optimism. "Any World Cup game is a huge opportunity for us," Christian Pulisic, the Stars and Stripes headliner and top attacker, said before the squads final pre-Cup training session. "We have to have a good performance and really fight." Coach Mauricio Pochettino was more succinct. "We need to win," he said. Here's everything to know ahead of USA vs. Paraguay: USA's Players To Watch Laken Litman: Im really intrigued by Matt Freese. Will he officially be the USAs starting goalkeeper? If so, Fridays opener vs. Paraguay will be just his 16th cap for the national team. At training on Thursday, Freese and incumbent Matt Turner seemed to still be battling. Goalkeeper coach Toni Jimenez was working them hard and could be heard yelling, "You need to control the situation, dont let the situation control you" during a drill with Freese. How will Freese respond in this massive moment? McIntyre: The New York-born, London-raised dual national striker, who chose the U.S. over England in 2023 and scores prolifically for Champions League mainstay AS Monaco, will be counted on for the goals that will help his country advance to the new round of 32 and, fans of the co-hosts hope, well beyond. USA's Starting XI Prediction FOX Sports' Stu Holden predicts a back-four lineup for the USA. However, he states that it will be more of a back-three formation with the expectation for Antonee "Jedi" Robinson to move forward to help the midfielders maintain possession. "Possession is key," Holden stated. "That's why I have Malik Tillman and Tyler Adams in there, with Adams as a destroyer and Tillman getting on the ball." Sergio Dest has often played in the backline but has featured in a forward role under USA manager Maurico Pochettino. That will help Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic be able to roam freely and attack what should be a stout Paraguayan defense. "I don't [McKennie] back to goal," Holden added. "I want him late runs into the box. Pulisic has looked back to what we all know what he is worthy of." Unsurprisingly, Folarin Balogun gets the nod at striker, although USA legend Clint Dempsey wants to see good link-up play between Pulisic and Balogun."I know there is a lot of pressure on Christian to create. He's dangerous in the attack," Dempsey said. "I would like to see him give it and get it back again and give Balogun more touches." Predicted Formation: 4-2-3-1 News & Notes Is the U.S. ready for primetime?:In 1994 (1st time as host), the USA advanced as a best third-place finisher. Only two host nations failed to advance from the group stage: South Africa (2010) and Qatar (2022). Those tournament formats only saw the top two teams in each group advance. Paraguay's tough defense: During its World Cup qualifying campaign, Paraguay posted 10 clean sheets in 18 games while conceded only 10 goals (tied for second fewest with Argentina). A familiar face: Paraguay veteran Miguel Almirn is familiar to fans on three continents, having moved from Cerro Porteo in his native country to Argentine club Lans to MLS side Atlanta United to Premier League mainstay Newcastle United before returning to Atlanta last year. Julio Enciso injury:Paraguay's 22-year-old attacking midfielder is racing to be fit for Friday's game. The attacking midfielder, considered one of the team's most talented youngsters, was injured vs. Nicaragua in pre-World Cup friendly on June 6.0 Comments 0 Shares 10 Views 0 Reviews -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAnother big midfield move may be on the cards for Manchester City but is it the right one?Another big midfield move may be on the cards for Manchester City but is it the right one?Although Manchester City have seen a second bid rejected for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson it is expected that Anderson will sign for City this summer. Tom Collomosse has reported for the Daily Mail that it is expected that Anderson will sign for City at some point this month. If, or when, City complete the signing of Anderson, that will be one hole in Citys midfield filled. It has now been reported that Manchester City could also be set to move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. Tonali is a fine player and a proven performer in the Premier League. But is he a fit for what City need? That may be a question to investigate, especially considering Tonali wouldnt come cheap.Manchester City appreciate Sandro Tonali reports Fabrizio Romano.Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano commented earlier this week on Manchester Citys interest in signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. Romano also touched on Citys bid to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. He explained: Manchester City yesterday offered 121m add-ons included, for Elliot Anderson 106m plus 15m as add-ons.The bid has been rejected by Nottingham Forest. Forest want guaranteed money and for Anderson to officially become the most expensive midfielder in the history of the Premier League, more than Declan Rice, and more than [Moises] Caicedo. Now lets see what Manchester City decide to do because it was already a big proposal. Dont forget what I told you last week, another player really appreciated, really, really appreciated by Manchester City is also Sandro Tonali.Man City have several options in midfield. On Tonali, there is interest from other clubs in England, including Arsenal. But for sure its going to be an interesting couple of days and weeks around midfielders because Man Utd are working on their deals. Is Sandro Tonali the midfielder that City need this summer?Working on the assumption that Manchester City do sign Elliot Anderson, Citys midfield would have a completely different look. Alongside Anderson, City would have Rodri, Mateo Kovacic, Nico Gonzalez, and Tijjani Reijnders in their ranks. Also, Nico OReilly could move into midfield next season. Plus, there are also Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden to factor into the equation. Now, if one or both of Nico and Tijjani Reijnders leave City, that would change what type of midfielder City needs. But is Tonali the right fit?Sandro Tonali can play across midfield in a variety of roles. Particularly as a number six or an eight. He ticks that particular box that City crave in players, especially midfielders. In terms of passing, Tonali can play a quality cross-field ball and also keeps the ball moving quickly with one- and two-touch passes. Tonali is press-resistant to a degree. Sandro Tonalis ball-carrying ability is also exceptional, so in possession, Tonali does seem like a midfielder Manchester City needs. However, as much as Tonali can keep the ball moving quickly which is a strength of Newcastles game under Eddie Howe, Manchester City are a possession heavy side. They were under Pep Guardiola. With Enzo Maresca expected to be Guardiolas replacement, that wont change at City. Does Tonali fit Marescas style of play in possession? Maybe not. Outside of possession, Tonali reads the game well, but isnt strong in a challenge. Does that fit what City need? Perhaps it does if Tonali were to start alongside Rodri or Elliot Anderson. Perhaps Tonali couldnt be a lonely number six in a City side. That seems to a query around his fit into a Manchester City team. The other factor is the cost. Newcastle United will not sell Sandro Tonali cheaply. Lee Ryder has reported for Chronicle Live that Newcastle will demand 100 million for Tonali. Would Manchester City spend up to 230 million on two midfielders? Perhaps not. Maybe if they sell Nico Gonzalez or Tijjani Reijnders, or both, that may be an option. That side of the equation may have to play out first. But on closer inspection it is hard to see City spending so much on two midfielders.Final thoughts.Sandro Tonali continues to be named as a potential summer transfer target for Manchester City. There are parts of Tonalis game that would slot into a City side. However, there are aspects of Tonalis play that may not be suited to a role in an Enzo Maresca team. Summer departures may shape Manchester Citys chase to sign Sandro Tonali, as will Newcastles reported transfer fee. But as good as Tonali is, you do wonder if there is another midfielder out there, aside from Elliot Anderson, that Manchester City could target this summer who may be a better fit for their midfield.0 Comments 0 Shares 11 Views 0 Reviews
