4 Takeaways From Canada's World Cup Opener vs. Bosnia And Herzegovina
The first FIFA men's World Cup match on Canadian soil delivered drama, dread and most importantly, a point. Canada's historic World Cup match on home soil is now behind us, and it nearly became a national wake. Bosnia and Herzegovina opened the scoring in the 21st minute through striker Jovo Lukic, who headed in his first-ever international goal from point-blank range after Sead Kolainac's near-post flick on a corner. For an hour, around 43,000 fans at Toronto Stadium stared down a familiar nightmare. Then, Cyle Larin's 78th-minute equalizer rescued a 1-1 draw and the first point in Canadian men's World Cup history. Here are four takeaways from the match. 1. Bosnia Can Cause Problems Those who watched Bosnia eliminate Italy on penalties in the playoffs already know that this is a well-organized team with young talent. There's real technical ability throughout the midfield and attack. Benjamin Tahirovic dictates tempo, while Esmir Bajraktarevi plays with swagger. The defense is anchored by Tarik Muharemovic, perhaps the most underrated center back at this World Cup composed in possession, ruthless in the duels, never hurried. Canada threw everything at this back line and kept finding bodies: Nikola Katic cleared Tani Oluwaseyi's header off the line, and Kolainac deflected Richie Laryea's goal-bound effort onto the crossbar. This team feels like it's playing with house money after defying the odds and beating Italy in the World Cup qualification playoff final. 2. Cyle Larin, Of All People Write this one down, because it's a pub quiz answer forever: Larin had been on the pitch for two minutes when he swiveled and ripped a deflected strike into the bottom corner, becoming just the second Canadian ever to score at a men's World Cup. The first was Alphonso Davies, who watched this one from the bench. Larin's redemption arc is almost too crazy: he lost his starting spot to Tani Oluwaseyi, hadn't scored for his country in nearly two years, and entered the match as an afterthought. Ninety seconds later, he'd scored arguably the most important goal in the program's history. It secured Canada's first World Cup point after six straight defeats across 1986 and 2022. History was made, courtesy of the veteran striker from Brampton, Ontario. 3. Canada Misses Fonzie Badly Alphonso Davies missed the match with a hamstring injury, and his absence was felt throughout. The attacking burden shifted entirely onto Jonathan David, Canada's all-time leading goalscorer, who was coming off a difficult debut season at Juventus. David got his golden chance in the 17th minute and fired it straight at the goalkeeper from 12 yards. Just like we've seen time and time again this season, he fluffed his lines. Here's the main issue: without Davies' electrifying pace, dribbling and directness, defenders can fully focus on stopping David. Fonzie doesn't just create; his mere presence relieves pressure on everyone around him. Canada generated nearly 70% possession and a mountain of corners. Sure, they were also unlucky, but it could've been a different story with Davies on the pitch. The Canadian medical staff will now try to earn their salaries. 4. The Group B Math According to the bookies, Switzerland is the group favorite and Qatar is the floor. If the odds are right, this was a de facto final for second place in the group. A draw keeps both teams alive and solves nothing. Switzerland and Qatar meet on Saturday, and once that result lands, the picture sharpens: if the Swiss win as expected, Canada and Bosnia are both chasing, and Canada's date with Switzerland becomes the kind of match that defines a generation. The encouraging part for Marsch was the performance. Canada created enough to win this twice. The concerning part is that creation and conversion don't go hand in hand. Canada will need to be more clinical in front of goal. This group lacks an elite superpower, but the parity is undeniable. 4 . What's Next? Both of these teams will be back in action next Thursday, June 18. Bosnia and Herzegovina will play its second Group B game at Los Angeles Stadium against Switzerland, which faces Qatar on Saturday (3 p.m. ET on FOX One/FOX. Canada, meanwhile, will take on Qatar next Thursday at 6 p.m. ET (FS1). The big story going into that game will be whether Davies is available for selection.

Knicks-Spurs NBA Finals: As San Antonio focuses on keeping season alive, coach Mitch Johnson acknowledges he needs to be better
SAN ANTONIO As the postseason has dragged on over the past two months, Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson has constantly referred to the phrase 100 games, an indication of not only how long an actual regular season can last, but also how experience can build over time.Game 4, a historic Finals collapse, was unlike anything this team had ever experienced, but Johnsons method of motivation, even in instances when his team let go of the rope, has always been a balancing act: emphasizing positive areas that helped build leads, which the Spurs have done plenty this series, while also acknowledging what went wrong. But does this approach work at the highest level of the sport, in the most tense, emotional, draining moments? It's a good question, Johnson said. I think every game takes on different personalities. A lot of times when you watch the games back, with the level of detail that I would guess all staffs do, but I can speak for our staff, there's so much that starts to happen, whether on a certain play before you make the shot or before the runs happen.I think that's what gives someone a lot of clarity on what went well and what didn't, what led to it. A lot of times, again, these things aren't in a vacuum, isolated types of things. As you see that there's a lot of themes of the game that may not necessarily show themselves in a box score on the surface level, when you start peeling back the layers, you start to understand the ripple effect, good and bad, of what you do or what you did.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentDivvying up the blame pie chart for surrendering a 29-point lead is an interesting social experiment; Victor Wembanyama leaned too far into high-usage, low-efficiency shots in the second half, missing 11 of his 14 attempts; DeAaron Foxs split-second decision-making when veteran guidance was required will replay on and on; Stephon Castles inability to create the separation he had enjoyed for weeks in the postseason proved costly. The list could go on and on.But as Johnson sat at the podium, he seemed to absorb all of the responsibility. After all, it was him that allowed two huge runs in the second half, a 13-0 run in the middle of the third quarter and a 32-11 Knicks blitzkrieg over the final nine minutes, all without making adjustments. It was him that allowed Wembanyamas usage and minutes to climb and climb without trying to find some breathing room for him, literally and figuratively. It was him that extended too much of a leash to Keldon Johnson in hopes of playing him into a rhythm needed from the second unit, as opposed to recalling Dylan Harper. It was him that largely went away from creating paint touches that create secondary and tertiary actions and shots, getting swept up in the dramatics of Madison Square Garden.Johnson spoke about the lack of execution and discipline in the second half, focusing on the third quarter, when he felt San Antonio began to lose its identity, which manifested itself in the final frame. But the more he elaborated on the Spurs mistakes, it was clear Johnson understood that everything boiled down to him. There [were] a lot of things that we did, where it felt like we could have put our energy into the right spots in that third quarter, Johnson said. Some things that I could have done to help that, as well. I think that quarter probably was the most disappointing for me. There's some learning things in every quarter, don't get me wrong, some things we want to be sharper with, better at, finish games. We weren't as connected and disciplined as we should have been.In Game 5 (8:30 p.m. ET Saturday, ABC), the margin for error is lower than the floor with the Spurs facing a 3-1 series deficit. The reason why an overwhelming majority of tickets have been purchased by traveling Knicks fans is because they smell blood in the water and sense a wounded team. But in the same token as Mitch Johnson running to the defense of his players like Fox his roster, that has grown with him, protects its shot caller. De'Aaron Fox will have the basketball in his hands at the end of the game tomorrow, and I have the utmost confidence he's going to deliver like he's done countless times for us, Johnson saidIf theres any hope or luck from the basketball gods in extending this series, both fronts will need to be in unison. He understands people very well and knows how to speak to them, Wembanyama said of Johnson. I am no exception. He knows how to speak to me. In-game, it feels like non-verbal communication as much as verbal because sometimes it's loud, sometimes we're far away. He knows what I need. He knows what I need to get to. I also know what he needs, what signals he needs. We've grown very much in that sense. That communication will be especially important considering Wembanyamas rising workload. The 22-year-old, who played a shade over 29 minutes per game during the regular season, has seen his playing time jump from 28.3 minutes per game in the opening round to a whopping 40.3 through Game 4 of the Finals. Wembanyama acknowledged the presence of possible fatigue but refused to allow it be used as an excuse for how the team fell apart late in Game 4. Regardless, its Johnson who monitors his stars energy levels and admitted he could have done a better job of handling the Frenchman.Looking back on it, I do believe that I have to make sure that I help him have the energy required to finish the game as strong as he needs to finish the game, Johnson said. I think I could have done better in that regard. That's not a number of minutes. That's not meaning he's going to play this many minutes tomorrow. It's looking back on the game, and that game in itself, I got to make sure that I help with that. I think I could have been better in that regard looking back from that game.A team this young and inexperienced needs a leader to lean on, and Johnson has shown since taking the reins from Gregg Popovich that hes capable, forward-thinking and brave. The Spurs have shown through their actions that theyre willing to run through a brick wall for Johnson. Hell need to repay their faith with fortitude if San Antonio dares to pull off what seems like the impossible.

Larin scores in 78th minute to rally Canada to 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina in World Cup opener
Late substitute Cyle Larin scored in the 78th minute and co-host Canada earned its first point in its third World Cup appearance and first on home soil by rallying for a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday.Playing in the shadow of Torontos iconic CN Tower, and in front of a sea of red Ca-na-da! chanting fans that included hockey star Connor McDavid and actor Ryan Reynolds, Larin converted Promise Davids pass a mere two minutes after entering the game. The goal was only the second in World Cup play scored by Canada after the team lost all three of its games at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and again four years ago at Qatar.Injury fill-in Jovo Lukic headed in a corner kick in the 21st minute for Bosnia-Herzegovina, which is making its second World Cup appearance after failing to advance out of group play in 2014.Starting in place of Edin Dzeko (shoulder) and Haris Tabakovic (undisclosed), Lukic was in a ideal position to cap a set piece with captain Sead Kolasinac flicking along a header off Ivan Basics corner kick. The goal was Lukics first in international play and coming in the 27-year-old attackers fourth international appearance.Despite giving up the lead, the small Balkan nation of about 3 million people keeps coming up big on the international stage including eliminating four-time champion Italy in the European playoffs. Before Larins goal, Canadas best scoring chance came in the 54th minute when captain Stephen Eustaquio fed the ball to Richie Laryea in front of a wide-open net. The ball deflected off Kolasinacs foot and hit the crossbar.Canada was playing without Alphonso Davies (hamstring), who scored the nations first World Cup goal four years ago in Qatar.Canada now shifts to Vancouver for its final two group games, against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.The Bosnians also head west, with games against Switzerland on June 18 in Los Angeles and Qatar on June 24 in Seattle.___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup

Texans quarterback C.J. Strouds foundation sponsors kids to attend church camp: A real heart for people
When Texans team chaplain Mikado Hinson invited Vaughaligan Walwyn to speak to the football team, a connection was formed between the Space City Church pastor and star quarterback C.J. Stroud. The words from Walwyn, a Houston native and former long jumper at Rice University known as Pastor Von Won, deeply resonated with Stroud. The former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year attended a chapel service led by Walwyn the night before a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. And Stroud credited the pastors words in helping him remain poised as he delivered the game-winning touchdown pass in the final minute of the fourth quarter. He was talking about, You gotta get through the mud before you can get to the miracle, Stroud said. That resonated with me. Not only in ball, but just in life. Its not always perfect, but you know the mud makes you who you are. The mud we have is self-inflicted mud. I feel like that kind of motivates us in a sense. It motivates me.And the bond between Stroud and the church continues to this day.The C.J. Stroud Foundation, run by Strouds mother, Kimberly, sponsored 10 kids from Space City Church to attend a church camp in Huntsville this week.Authentic, its not fake, its a real heart for people, Walwyn told KPRC 2. Kim, shes a very kind lady, just a sweet human being. Some people, its intimidating to ask for help, but theyre kind, approachable people Its a beautiful thing.#Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud and his charitable foundation, run by his mother, Kimberly, have sponsored 10 kids from Space City Church to attend a church camp this week in Huntsville. Pastor Von Won told @KPRC2 'C.J. and his mom are authentic, kind people with a real heart pic.twitter.com/NOTcueRL3Q Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) June 12, 2026Deeply spiritual and open about discussing his faith, Stroud often cites Biblical verses in interviews. That includes Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight."A year ago, Stroud provided financial resources for seven youth -- the same number as his No. 7 jersey -- to attend a church camp in Waxachachie. It means the world, Walwyn told KPRC 2. For C.J. and his foundation to pay those fees and help us in any capacity, its a blessing. It can be a big pressure sometimes and the last thing we want is a parent stressing out. Church camp impacted my life in a huge way.Ultimately, its a blessing to see the C.J. Stroud Foundation help us. We seek God to work through them and give us the fuel we need for ministry. Its incredible for people looking at Space City Church for us to be recognized by C.J. and the Texans and to be affiliated with them.Walwyn called Stroud a powerful ambassador of Christian faith and values, noting: Were always looking for a champion. Its rare that you have an athlete on fire talking about Jesus."The children posted a video on social saying in unison: Thank you C.J. Stroud Foundation!"We wanted to send C.J. and his mom, Kimberly, a big thank you, Walwyn said. For them to acknowledge us, we thank them a million times. Hopefully, this gives them some gratitude.A musician who has collaborated with Paul Wall and Scar Face on an album Grace Still Abides, Walwyn was invited to preach to the team by Hinson.During his sermon, Walwyn related difficult times he faced in the past.On social media after his sermon, Hinson wrote to Walwyn: My brother, thank you for pouring the Truth into our guys.To be at NRG Stadium and speak to the team and meet the coaching staff was a significant moment for Walwyn. It was very humbling, Walwyn said. Just me being a sports guy growing up, to see DeMeco Ryans, it meant so much. C.J. sat close to the front of the room with pen and paper out taking notes. It was great to see. When I was done, they gave me high-fives and told me I did a great job.I was just hoping they got the win the next day. Mikado said C.J. just gave you a shoutout. For me as a pastor in the city, I appreciate the recognition. There is no better co-sign as a Christian and most men honor football, especially in Texas, than to hear that from the star quarterback.Aaron Wilson is a Texans and NFL reporter for KPRC 2 and click2houston.com
