NCAA and Big 12 go to different courts over eligibility of Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby
The NCAA asked a Texas appeals court Monday to stay a temporary injunction that cleared the way for Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby to play this fall despite being declared ineligible for gambling while the Big 12 Conference filed a federal complaint warning the Texas attorney general to stay out of a case that has rattled college sports. The filings in separate courts raised the stakes in the fight over whether Sorsby can play and who makes that decision. In documents filed with the Court of Appeals for the Seventh District of Texas at Amarillo, the NCAA asked for an emergency motion to stay the June 8 injunction granted by a Lubbock County court in favor of Sorsby, who has admitted he has a gambling addiction and has made thousands of bets, included some on his own team when he was a freshman at Indiana. NCAA seeking for case to be resolved before season openerThe NCAA also asked for a resolution of the case by Aug. 28, which it said would spare the potential disruption of a ruling after Texas Tech begins its season on Sept. 5. Trial is currently scheduled for February, well after the season ends. The NCAA has long banned players for gambling but Texas Tech says Sorsby, who transferred there in January after the past two seasons at Cincinnati, would be better off on the team for his mental health and well being. The trial courts temporary injunction sweeps beyond anything Texas law permits, attorneys for the NCAA wrote. It undermines the integrity of college sports, rewrites member-adopted rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, immunizes Brendan Sorsby from discipline for admitted and serial violations of NCAA anti-gambling rules, incentivizes a run on courthouses across the country to challenge even the most obvious and straightforward student-athlete eligibility decisions and demolishes the status quo.The injunction last week from Judge Ken Curry prevents the NCAA from being able to block the Sorsby's eligibility for what will be his final college season with a team among the favorites to win the Big 12 and return to the College Football Playoff for a second consecutive season.Big 12 goes to federal courtThe Big 12, meanwhile, filed suit in U.S. District Court in Dallas seeking a court order backing its ability to use its bylaws for possible sanctions against Texas Tech if Sorsby plays this season. Last week, the Texas attorney generals office warned the league of potential legal action from Texas Tech for any sanctions against the school. The Big 12 filing names Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee in the U.S. Senate race this fall, as well as Texas Tech leadership, including its president, chancellor and athletic director. It accused them of trying to prevent the Big 12 from exercising its own rules the school itself agreed to long ago. Sorsby isn't named as a defendant. An athlete with an extensive, documented history of wagering on intercollegiate athletic contests especially his own teams games presents a reputational and integrity risk to the conference and its championship competition that the conference has both the right and the responsibility to address, attorneys for the Big 12 wrote. "The conference is not required to accept that risk on behalf of its 15 other member Institutions, their student-athletes, their fans and its commercial partners. And no government official has the power to compel it to do so.Big 12 board issues a statementThat federal lawsuit came before a meeting Monday of the Big 12 board of directors, which is made up of presidents and chancellors from the league's 16 schools. After meeting, the board said it was keeping all options on the table and made clear where it stands on the issue. The Big 12 has long spoken out about the dangers of sports wagering by student-athletes and remains committed to protecting the competitive integrity of conference competition. Universities should not field players who have bet on their own teams games in college athletics," the statement read, not specifically naming Texas Tech or Sorsby. Big 12 athletic directors in a conference call with Commissioner Brett Yormark last week expressed opposition to Sorsby playing for the Red Raiders this season, and some even suggested maybe not playing Texas Tech if he does. Gambling by Sorsby spans 3 schoolsCourt records show that Sorsby has acknowledged making thousands of impermissible bets on pro and college sports totaling at least $90,000 during his time at Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech. That included 40 bets on Indiana while he was a freshman there in 2022, though none on the game in which he played for the Hoosiers that season. While some guidelines for penalties related to gambling have changed in recent years, NCAA rules still call for a permanent loss of eligibility for any player who wagered on his own team. At least two schools, Nebraska in the Big Ten and Georgia in the SEC, have indicated they will not schedule Texas Tech.Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond last week called on the Big 12 to suspend Sorsby, and said claims by the Texas AG's office that sanctions against Texas Tech would violate antitrust laws are meritless. The Kansas attorney general, Kris Kobach, said Monday his office would provide support to the Big 12 in any legal dispute with Paxton's office. Both states have public schools that are in the conference.___AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll and https://apnews.com/hub/college-football

How Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley, a tight end guy, plans increased role for position
For a creative offensive mind with a strong background that included working with New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski, Nick Caley operated last season with a hand tied behind his back.Due to injuries, though, the Texans offensive coordinator and former Patriots tight ends and fullbacks coach and Los Angeles Rams tight ends coach and pass game specialist didnt get to run his entire strategy to incorporate his ideas.Veteran starting tight end Dalton Schultz was sidelined for the Texans AFC divisional round playoff loss to New England due to a strained calf. Tight end Cade Stover missed a large chunk of the season after breaking his foot against the Rams in the opening game. And Brevin Jordan tore his patellar tendon during a training camp practice. The Texans had to deploy offensive tackle Blake Fisher as their primary blocking tight end. While Schultz caught a career-high 82 passes, Caley had bigger plans at tight end. Now, hes planning an increased role for the tight ends. That means more double tight end, triple tight end and perhaps even split back formations for running backs David Montgomery and Woody Marks. The Texans utilized 12 personnel on 24.26 percent of their offensive snaps last season. They were in 11 personnel -- one running back, one tight end, three wide receivers - 58.11 percent of the time. And they were in 21 personnel -- heavy formations -- 17.63 percent of the time.I am a little bit biased there because of my background with tight ends, but you remember it is important, Caley said. I think you always want to be multiple. To nobodys fault, last year we got thinned out pretty early with Brev prior to us ever getting to the season. Cade goes down in the fourth quarter of the Rams game for call it two-thirds of the season, and were in the jumbo world a lot. We want to be multiple. We want to have balance, 11, 12s, 13s, 20, etcetera, and I think thats always good to be able to do those things. So, thats important. Weve got a really good group of receivers. Weve got a really good group of backs. Weve got a really good group at tight end now, too, and were healthy. So, its been a lot of fun just trying to mix those groupings here and evolve that.Since last season, the Texans signed a healthy Schultz to a one-year, $12.6 million extension, signed former New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders tight end Foster Moreau and drafted University of Michigan tight end and Germany native Marlin Klein in the second round,That gives Caley options from a receiving and blocking standpoint.Cales is a tight end guy, Schultz said. Hes always trying something. There are always little wrinkles like, Hey, lets do this out of this formation. Lets try this out of this. Lets motion it. I dont think he goes to bed without thinking about ball, I dont think he can turn it off. Were always coming in, mixing stuff up. Hes really good about letting us know, Hey, on this, lets do this different. Thats been fun, where you can get away with trying some of that. Youve got a little bit more time to spend on stuff like that.Moreau has added an experienced presence and an outspoken, trash-talking voice to the offense. He has been mentoring the younger players.Stover has fully recovered from offseason hernia surgery.Jordan has regained his speed after rehabbing from the patellar tendon tear. Were not quite there yet, Schultz said. Well see when the reins come off everybody, but Im excited. We have a very well-rounded room and a bunch of guys that do a lot of different stuff really well. I think Foster has been a great addition for us, just bringing the energy, the juice. Hes a classic Louisiana kid, chirping everything all the time. We need that, especially on offense. We need that sort of thing. I think our room has come together nicely. Well continue to work and to get better and show that we can contribute in many different ways in this offense. The Texans, with new tight ends coach James Ferentz, a former Texans and Patriots center and the son of Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, want to employ more of a roll-up-their sleeves, hard-nosed approach to blocking this season. Its hard because, as a tight end, youre asked to do everything, Schultz said. You constantly have to be working on everything. I know thats not the best answer or the easiest thing to do. Its hard when youre asked to pass block against Will Anderson. Its hard when youre asked to run block against Danielle Hunter. Its hard when youre asked to go one-on-one against Derek Stingley. Youre asked to do all these things and all the different facets. I think with Ferentz coming in, he has a really good kind of offensive line, physical run blocking background. Im hoping through some of that work, thatll kind of allow a little bit more growth in the run game, for me specifically. Just by working through some of those fundamentals and techniques that is just a different view and a focal point than what I think were used to technique-wise.Klein strained his hamstring during organized team activities and was sidelined for the Texans minicamp. He is expected to make a full recovery for training camp.Good athlete, hes a big dude, he moves well, Schultz said. I think in this offense, specifically, you are asked to do everything. Knowing where to be and where to line up and how to execute is like a big hurdle. Its a big learning curve. I think as a young guy, being able to soak that up and to get that information and use it well and able to go out and actually line up and execute at full speed, its hard to do. So far, I think hes done a good job of that. Training Camp kind of is the true test of putting the pads on and figuring out like when the bullets are flying. Well see. Im excited for him. James Trafford hints at move away from Manchester City as youngster eyes up England starting spot
James Trafford has hinted at a move away from Manchester as the youngster eyes up the starting spot in England's goal.Trafford is one of three keepers in Thomas Tuchel's side, working with Dean Henderson and Jordan Pickford. The 23-year-old had a tough season with Manchester City after the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who became Pep Guardiola's first choice.Trafford, who has been linked with a move away from the Etihad this summer, said: "I don't think there has been a goalie start for any of the top nations that isnt a number one at the club, so going off history, I'd say, yeah."TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayAsked whether it could mean he explores his options, Trafford said: "You never know. Whether I move, whether I don't move, I do what's right for me and my career."The youngster did win the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup this season, playing in goal throughout the competition.Trafford continued: "It's obviously been very challenging the past season, but looking back, I've learned so much, I've developed so much."I thought I'd had a lot of experiences up to this point in my career, but this was a new experience for me in everything. It was obviously very tough.LATEST SPORTS NEWSWho is Vozinha? Putting Cape Verdes Historic Draw Against Spain In Historical Context
So much for a supersized World Cup diluting the quality of soccers biggest tournament. Cape Verde, making its debut at the World Cup, pulled off a stunning upset to shut out heavily favored Spain in a 0-0 draw on Monday. "This means everything for our country," Cape Verde coach Pedro Leito Brito said. "We have always said that we wanted everybody to see our country, our team and we have shown organization and braveness and this is proof of what our country is about resilience and to try to overcome hardships." European champion Spain entered the World Cup as one of the favorites to win the tournament, listed at +450, along with Spain. Now, after the draw, Spain has dropped to +500. Not even 18-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal, who was the No. 1-ranked player in our Top 100 Players in the FIFA World Cup ranking, could turn a game that ended with wild and emotional celebrations from Cape Verde players and fans inside the stadium. Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha broke down in tears after the final whistle following his impressive performance to keep Spain at bay. "Heroic effort from this Cape Verde team," FOX Sports lead soccer analyst Stu Holden said on the broadcast as members of Cape Verde embraced the 40-year-old Vozinha. "They've made themselves proud." Here are some numbers to put the stunning 0-0 draw between Spain and Cape Verde into perspective: The result marked one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history by FIFA rankings, representing the fourth-largest ranking gap ever in a match where the lower-ranked team avoided defeat. Spain entered the World Cup on a 30-game unbeaten streak, while this was Cape Verde's World Cup debut, making it the third-smallest country ever to qualify in terms of population. Cape Verde's population is 82 times smaller than Spain. Spain forward Lamine Yamal has a transfer value of 200M (approximately $232.1M). All 26 players of Cape Verde's national team have a COMBINED transfer value of 54.4M (approximately $63.1M). Yamal and Norway forward Eling Haaland (200M, approximately $232.1M) have nearly four times the value of Cape Verde's entire team. Spain was ranked second in the FIFA world rankings heading into the matchup, while Cape Verde was ranked 67th. The 65-place difference is the ninth-biggest gap in world rankings in a World Cup matchup. Cape Verde is now one of just three debutant nations since 2010 to earn points in its opening match of the World Cup. The 2010 champion Spain is aiming to win the World Cup for a second time and is coming into the tournament after winning the Euros in 2024. But a disappointing start echoes its performances in recent World Cups when it has failed to advance beyond the round of 16 in each of the last three editions. "What doubts do you think my team is going to have? Zero doubts," said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, who had warned before the match that Cape Verde could be one of the surprise teams of the World Cup. "We know how difficult this competition is. The idea we need to follow is what took us here and what made us European champions." Spain plays Saudi Arabia on Sunday and Cape Verde faces Uruguay. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
