Barcelona prepared to delay new signings as they await veteran full-back
Barcelona prepared to delay new signings as they await veteran full-backBarcelona have made a clear decision on their defensive planning: the club want to strengthen the left-back position this summer. The club signed Joao Cancelo on loan in January, and the Portuguese full-back contributed a lot going forward and displaced Alejandro Balde from the starting berth.According to SPORT, Bara have an agreement in place with Cancelo for the next two seasons, but the operation depends on Al Hilal.Bara are prepared to wait a little longer for Cancelo before moving fully towards other options, with the Saudi Arabian club still not giving way.Bara want Cancelo, but not at any priceThe sporting approval appears to be total.Cancelo wants to stay at Barcelona. (Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty Images)Hansi Flick likes Cancelos versatility, and that is easy to understand. He can play on both sides, offers quality in possession and gives Bara a different kind of full-back profile when the team need more control with the ball. The problem is the price. Bara do not want to pay an inflated fee for a player who has only one year left on his Al Hilal contract. That is a sensible position, but it also carries risk. Waiting for Cancelo means Bara could lose alternatives such as Andrea Cambiaso or Alejandro Grimaldo. The left-back market is movingCambiaso is generating interest from Chelsea, Grimaldo has interest from Atletico Madrid, and if Bara put all their eggs in the Cancelo basket, they might end up with none. This is where the club must be sharp. Cancelo is clearly the preferred route because he knows the dressing room, fits Flicks plan and appears willing to make a financial effort to return.Barcelona do not want to pay hefty price for Cancelo. (Photo by Alex Slitz/Getty Images)However, there needs to be a date by which they need a decision. Al Hilal do not have him in their plans anymore, but are just making the sale difficult. The situation also affects Alejandro Balde. He already lost his starting berth, and if Bara sign someone like Cancelo, he may start next season as the substitute.Balde is homegrown, young and still has qualities that are hard to find. But if Flick does not see him as a starter, the player has to decide whether staying and fighting is better than protecting his development elsewhere.Baras stance is understandable but dangerous. It is a double-edged sword and could leave the club late in the market, with fewer choices and more pressure.Bara should keep pushing for Cancelo, but only if Al Hilal accept reality. If not, the club must move quickly, because the one thing they cannot afford is going into next season without competition for Balde, and it remains to be seen how things play out.

Harry Kane reveals Thomas Tuchel's blunt half-time message that transformed England in Croatia win
Harry Kane has revealed Thomas Tuchel challenged England's players to accept defeat on their own terms rather than retreat into their shells as the Three Lions recovered from a shaky first half to beat Croatia 4-2 in their World Cup opener.England were pegged back twice in Dallas and went into the interval level at 2-2 after Petar Musa struck shortly before the break, leaving Tuchel visibly frustrated on the touchline. But the German's message resonated with his squad and sparked an emphatic response after half-time as Kane completed a brace, with Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford also finding the net to secure an impressive victory over Luka Modric and his team-mates.Kane admitted England had drifted away from the aggressive style Tuchel wants and praised his manager for reigniting the team at the interval.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour Say"I thought it was a game of two halves," the England captain said."First half, we were OK. Really disappointed to concede in the way we did, I thought we dropped off."Credit to the manager, he gave us a speech at half-time and said if we lose, we lose in our way and I think we saw that in the way we came out in the second half."We went full gas and they couldn't live with it. Credit to everyone for the first game of the tournament."Kane believes England's intensity remains their greatest weapon and acknowledged they had struggled to deal with Croatia's experienced midfield during the opening period."Without the ball, we went a bit more aggressive," he added."It was difficult. They have players like Luka Modric dropping in and you're trying to figure out who to pick up."The intensity we want, it's our biggest strength and we'll have to use that more.LATEST SPORTS NEWS:Thomas Tuchel left furious after national anthem incident in England World Cup win over CroatiaDeclan Rice gives injury update after being forced out of England World Cup win against CroatiaThomas Tuchel spotted having heated row with England star during World Cup victory over Croatia"The way we controlled the game once we went ahead, we never really looked like we were in danger and then scored on the counter-attack. We had a spell where we could have scored three or four."Bellingham also praised Tuchel's intervention, insisting the manager struck exactly the right tone despite England's disappointing first-half display."It wasn't one of those where it was a big drama or standing up and shouting; it was what the team needed," he said."We have a mature group with great leaders in there; everyone knew the level we had to get to. The start of the second half gave us a great platform."Declan Rice, who later revealed he has been dealing with a minor issue for several weeks after limping off late on, was equally impressed."He was top at half-time," Rice said."It was one of those moments when you're like wow what a top manager."Tuchel later explained his thinking behind the dressing room speech."Even if we lose, it will not change my perception of the last 17 days but let's do it our way," he said."We were too focused on protecting the result. We were a back seven and we didn't defend."If the result doesn't go our way, we want to play our way. I tried to encourage them to go for it."Assistant coach Anthony Barry had already identified England's struggles during an interview at half-time, describing the opening 45 minutes as "complicated and confusing" and blaming "nervous energy" for a series of poor decisions in possession.England's response suggested Tuchel's words had the desired effect, with the Three Lions overwhelming Croatia after the restart to make a dream start to their World Cup campaign. They're next in action against Ghana on June 23 (9pm).
