Yankees activate C Austin Wells from IL, recall P Elmer Rodrguez to give starting pitchers extra day of rest
The New York Yankees have activated catcher Austin Wells from the injured list before Sunday's matchup with the Cincinnati Reds. Wells, 26, is in the starting lineup and batting eighth against Reds starting pitcher Chase Burns. Additionally, the Yankees recalled pitcher Elmer Rodrguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start on Sunday. That bumps Gerrit Coles next start to Monday versus the Detroit Tigers. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the move was made to give the starting rotation an extra day of rest. Rodrguez, 22, started three games for the Yankees earlier this season, compiling a 4.15 ERA with 6 strikeouts and 9 walks in 13 innings. He also allowed 15 hits. In 10 Triple-A starts, Rodrguez recorded a 3.00 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 51 innings.Wells has been on the IL since June 6 with cervical headaches. Wells told reporters before he began his minor-league rehab assignment that he'll wear a new catcher's helmet more like a hockey-style goaltender's mask. "It felt a little sturdier," Wells said, via MLB.coms Bryan Hoch. "Whatever was going on this year, it wasn't really working. I'll try everything."The headaches are believed to be at least partially responsible for Wells poor start to the 2026 season. Before going on the IL, he had a slash average of .166/.278/.255 with 4 home runs and 7 RBI in 169 appearances. Last season, Wells batted .219/.275/.436 with 21 homers, 22 doubles and 71 RBI. Cervical headaches or cervicogenic headaches result from head pain caused by a cervical spine injury such as a slipped disk or arthritis, according to the Cleveland Clinic. In Wells absence, J.C. Escarra was the Yankees primary catcher. In 32 games, he compiled a triple-slash line of .188/.239/.271 with five doubles and 7 RBI. He was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday to clear a spot for Wells on the Yankees roster. Ali Snchez will remain the Yankees other catcher, providing a right-handed bat with Wells. Hes batted .313/.353/.375 in eight games, starting five of them.

Were all rooting for Cabo Verde to play well, to shine on the pitch. The players need to have faith and everything will go well.Keep your heads held high, go onto that pitch, push for a goal and youll perform beautifully, my boys. A kiss for you, be strong and brave. Blue Sharks! The team is commonly called Tubares Azuis' in Portuguese, which translates to Blue Sharks. Her visa issues primarily raising the money needed for one were worked out after the U.S. State Department, FIFA, U.S. lawmakers and Cape Verde's soccer federation evidently combined efforts and cleared a path for Evora to come to Miami. She arrived Friday afternoon after more than 24 hours of travel from Cape Verde and was immediately surrounded by FIFA officials and volunteers as she made her way through the airport.FIFA even hosted her briefly at the organization's tournament headquarters in Florida over the weekend, officials said Sunday.Vozinha had about 50,000 followers on Instagram as the World Cup was starting. That sparked an immediate effort to find ways for Evora to get to the U.S. for the tournament. And the tie, combined with a story of a 40-year-old goalie and his mom, brought attention onto Cape Verde's soccer team like never before. Its been intense, Cape Verde forward Garry Rodrigues said. "But as we are professionals, the game (against) Spain is now in the past. ... We're still human. Seeing everything on the internet has been very intense. But we cannot use that as an excuse. Jurgen Klopp embroiled in bitter spat with Dutch legend after Virgil van Dijk comments
Jurgen Klopp has publicly dismissed Rafael van der Vaart's stinging assessment of Virgil van Dijk, declaring the former Tottenham midfielder's views irrelevant until he offers praise for any footballer. The ex-Liverpool manager, currently serving as a pundit for MagentaTV at the World Cup, responded to Van der Vaart's criticism with characteristic directness."I don't know if it's worth naming Rafael van der Vaart at all," Klopp stated."But if he ever says something positive about a player, I'm willing to take him seriously again."He added that Van der Vaart appears to identify issues simply to express them "in a flowery way" before criticising players, concluding: "But it's not that important."Van der Vaart sparked the controversy while working for Dutch broadcaster NOS following the Netherlands' opening Group F match against Japan in Dallas, which finished 2-2.The 43-year-old, who earned 109 caps for his country, delivered a withering verdict on the Liverpool captain's mobility after Ronald Koeman's side twice surrendered their lead."I have to be honest: I was quite shocked by Van Dijk," Van der Vaart said. "With him, I thought: that doesn't look good. Especially while turning. It is proving very difficult. A bit like a Boeing 747 turning. I hope he starts turning a bit faster during the tournament."The Netherlands responded emphatically in their second fixture, dismantling Sweden 5-1 on Saturday with Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey each netting twice, while fellow Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch also impressed.Van Dijk played his part in containing another attacking threat, though he was beaten for pace by Anthony Elanga on Sweden's consolation goal.Klopp managed the Dutch defender for six and a half years at Anfield, during which time they claimed eight major trophies together, with Van Dijk serving as captain in the German's final season. The pair recently crossed paths at the tournament in the United States, with supporters describing photographs of their reunion warmly. The Netherlands now sit atop Group F with four points from their opening two matches, setting up a final group stage encounter against already eliminated Tunisia in Kansas City on Thursday.Van Dijk revealed after the Sweden victory that he sustained a knock during the match, telling NOS: "I took a hard hit to my hip, and I couldn't feel my upper leg anymore, so that was a little bit crazy."The 34-year-old believes the issue was likely a pinched nerve and expects to be available for the Tunisia fixture, though the team will assess his condition in the coming days. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
