2026 World Cup Third-Place Standings: Who's In, Who's On The Bubble
For the first time at a FIFA World Cup, finishing third in your group does not necessarily mean going home. With 48 teams competing in 2026, FIFA expanded the field to include the eight best third-place finishers across all 12 groups. The top two teams in each group advance automatically, and the remaining eight spots in the 32-team knockout bracket go to the highest-ranked third-place teams, determined by points, goal difference, goals scored and other tiebreakers. That means 12 teams will be competing for eight spots, and the race to stay in the top eight is one of the most compelling subplots of the final days of the group stage. Here's where the third-place standings sit heading into the final round of group stage matches on June 24. Third-Place World Cup Standings The third-place standings will shift considerably over the next two days as the final round of group stage matches is played. Follow the live standings at FOXSports.com and watch every match on FOX and FS1, streaming live on FOX One. Standings as of the end of June 23 matches. 2026 FIFA World Cup Standings Rules How Do Points Work? How Do Tiebreakers Work? In a group, a team will earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. That could mean some teams are equal on points at the end of the three-game group stage. That leads us to tiebreakers. If two or more teams finish equal on group-stage points, here is the order of who finishes on top: 1. Most points obtained in the head-to-head matches played between the tied teams;2. Superior goal difference in the head-to-head matches played between the tied teams;3. Most goals scored in the head-to-head matches played between the tied teams; There are even more tiebreakers if any teams remained locked after all that. From there, ties are broken by these rules: 4. Superior goal difference in all group matches5. Most goals scored in all group matches6. Highest team conduct score in all group matches (taking into account yellow cards and red cards)7. FIFA World Ranking Which Third-Place Teams Will Advance? To fill out the World Cup knockout bracket, the best eight third-place teams out of the possible 12 in the tournament will advance. The criteria for those teams are based on: 1. Points2. Goal difference3. Goals scored4. Highest team conduct score in all group matches (taking into account yellow cards and red cards)5. FIFA World Ranking

New ice hockey operator steps in after council rink ban
A new operator will run a team in Dumfries in the 2026/27 season [David Yule]A new organisation has been approved to run an ice hockey team out of a south of Scotland rink after the council banned the previous operators. It means Dumfries Ice Bowl will continue to host a team in the National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) national division.Dumfries and Galloway Council (DGC) banned DJR Sport Ltd - which ran the Solway Sharks - from the facility in a dispute over payments.New board director Gary McCracken said it was "delighted to finally confirm" that NIHL hockey would continue in Dumfries for the 2026/27 campaign. The agreement means the Ice Bowl will continue to host NIHL games [BBC]The news brings to an end a period of uncertainty for ice hockey fans in the town.DGC confirmed at the end of April that it had decided to seek recovery of a debt of more than 65,000 from DJR Sport through the courts and would no longer allow it access to the rink. The operators said they had been without "key revenue streams" throughout last season and lodged a complaint with the council about its handling of the situation. They said they had paid more than 89,000 to the council and had "consistently sought a constructive and realistic discussion to resolve the position".The dispute only concerned the senior men's team - run by DJR Sport - not the youth and Scottish National League sides. After a meeting of the other club owners in the league, the NIHL has now voted in favour of admitting a new operating company to run a team - under the name Solway Ice Hockey Club - out of Dumfries. The name of the team will change for the season ahead [BBC]Director McCracken said the group "couldn't be happier to share this news". "We fully understand the frustrations of fans regarding the lack of updates in recent months," he said."But it was important that we followed the correct processes and ensured the club's future was secure before making any announcements."We look forward to welcoming teams and fans back to our home, Dumfries Ice Bowl, for the upcoming season."Fixtures will be released in due course but the new club was said to be "fully engaged" in building a competitive roster ready to compete in September. The NIHL said it was pleased that a team from Scotland - the only one in the division - would continue to operate out of the Ice Bowl."This represents continuity of 11 teams and is a positive step for the continued growth and development of ice hockey across the UK," it added. In a statement on their new social media page, Solway IHC said it would move forward "with a clear vision" under new owners McCracken, Jamie Crosbie, Santiago Buesa and Charlie Shaw.It said it wanted to "build a stable, ambitious and community-driven future for ice hockey in Dumfries and Galloway"."While the name above the door may evolve as the club continues its journey, our commitment to our supporters, sponsors, volunteers and community remains unchanged," it said."The history, passion and pride that have defined hockey in this region will continue to drive us forward."Council bans ice hockey team from rink in financial disputeWhy are fans being bitten by the Solway Sharks?

Alan Shearer labels England's draw with Ghana 'a reality check' after poor World Cup performance
Alan Shearer has labelled England's draw against Ghana as "a reality check" after the Three Lions were held to a disappointing 0-0.Thomas Tuchel's side lacked inspiration going forward, as the 11 men of Ghana defended resiliently to halt an England attack, which missed some golden opportunities.Shearer, who scored 30 times for England, suggested that the Three Lions' performance was "not a disaster, but it is absolutely a reality check"."It is a long tournament and there are some very well-organised teams.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour Say"At this level, you are not going to get everything your own way. You are not going to be able to go out and put in a sparkling performance in every game."You are going to be asked different questions and England struggled to find the answers against Ghana."I thought they were too slow; they didn't offer enough in wide positions. Everything was too passive, too safe, the easy option."England didn't do enough to win the game, but you have to give great credit to Ghana. Their organisation was absolutely superb," Shearer told the BBC.LATEST SPORTS NEWSEngland star appears to snub Thomas Partey handshake before Ghana World Cup clashWorld Cup day 14: Reaction after England draw against Ghana and Scotland prepare to face BrazilEngland handed World Cup reality check as Ghana coach mocks 'lucky' Three Lions after 0-0 drawWayne Rooney weighed in, suggesting that England were not creative enough going forward. He said: "I think you are always hoping for the energy of that performance we had against Croatia, but these games are so difficult when teams sit back and you have most of the possession."You have to break them down, find the space. For me, the key was getting crosses into the box - that's where the chances came from."They didn't get enough crosses in, but that is a typical [Ghana coach] Carlos Queiroz performance."Ghana were excellent, disciplined, [showed] concentration [in] how they defended. You have to give them a lot of praise."Tuchel insisted that England were "not frustrated" after the draw, appearing to agree with Rooney that his side needs to be more inventive in the final third. The German said: "I saw it coming. I knew it would be a difficult game. "I hardly saw a team defend so physically and so committed like Ghana did, so give credit to them."It was difficult to break them down; we needed to be patient, to be precise, to commit and be brave, but you can never for one second open spaces for counter-attacks. "We conceded only two and they were very dangerous, so we were very aware of that."I think at the end of the halves we grew into it, we were pushing and pushing, I liked the attitude, we needed a bit of luck, we had enough shots, we had enough crosses, we had enough set-pieces to score the first goal, we had a chance with Harry and it is what it is."Win two tickets to a FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final.
