WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMA Tough Win And A Harsh Red: 4 Takeaways From USA's Epic Round of 32 WinSAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA STADIUM For the first time in almost a quarter-century, the U.S. mens national team won a knockout game at the FIFA World Cup. The USA advanced to the round of 16 on Wednesday with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over plucky Bosnia and Herzegovina, setting up a delicious encounter with European power Belgium on Monday in Seattle with a quarterfinal place on the line. Folarin Baloguns third goal of the World Cup stood as the winner even with the U.S. striker later shown a red card that forced the hosts to play with 10 men for almost the final third of the contest. With the Americans under pressure, Malik Tillman scored on an 82nd minute free kick to pad the lead and seal what will be remembered as a pivotal and crucial triumph on soccers grandest stage. Here are my takeaways following just the second knockout round World Cup win in mens national team history: 1. USA Earns An Iconic World Cup Win "Just win, baby." On the eve of the most important match of the World Cup so far for the co-hosts USA, coach Mauricio Pochettino was introduced to that quote, one made famous by a local legend: former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis. The timing was fitting, too. When the do-or-die games begin, it doesnt matter how you survive, only that you do. The Stars and Stripes victory on Wednesday wasnt pretty. This was no surprise. Bosnia and Herzegovina came into its first tournament since 2014 with a reputation for grinding out results; in March, they needed to win penalty shootouts to dispatch Wales and then four-time World Cup champion Italy during Europes qualifying playoffs just to book their tickets to North America. Sure enough, they made life difficult for the Americans during the first half in Santa Clara. With all 11 visitors sitting behind the ball at times, the U.S. had few clear looks at keeper Nikola Vasiljs goal; despite enjoying 63% of possession, the only shot on goal the home side managed during the opening stanza was Baloguns strike, which literally came in the 45th minute. Thats not to say the U.S. didnt earn their win. The Bosnians had no answers for the breakneck speed at which the home team operated, or with their quickness in and around the visitors 19-yard box. The Americans played soccer; the Golden Lillies tried to stop them by clogging up passing lanes, kicking them whenever possible, and trying to steal a goal on set plays. In short, they made it difficult. The USA still prevailed. And now theyre one of the last 16 teams standing. 2. Folarin Balogun Stars, Then Sees Red The USAs top striker was Pochettinos top performer in the group stage, scoring twice and picking up Man of the Match honors against Paraguay, and being named Man of the Match again in the 2-0 win over Australia. With the top spot in Group D confirmed, the coach sat the 24-year-old against Trkiye rather than risk losing him to a yellow card suspension for the Americans first knockout round test. Which paid off: Balogun was again his sides main finishing threat against the Bosnians, having had what looked like another well-taken goal earlier in the first half currently ruled offside by the assistant referee. The one that counted drew him level with Landon Donovan for the most an American had ever scored at a single World Cup. He did so much more than that, too. Balogun kept the visiting defenders on their heels. They had few answers for his physicality, quickness and speed of thought. Then, suddenly, he was gone. With the Monaco man well on his way toward another player of the game award, Balogun accidentally stepped on the heel of Bosnian enter back Tarik Muharemovi. Didnt matter. After review, Brazilian referee Raphael Claus determined that serious foul play had occurred, and promptly showed Balogun a red card that forced the U.S. to play short-footed for the final almost half-hour of the contest. It couldve been fatal. Instead, Vasilj could only get his fingers on Tillmans free kick, giving the U.S. some desperately-neededbreathing room a cushion they rode all the way to the round of 16. 3. A Rematch With Belgium Awaits With the Belgium-Senegal match kicking off several hours beforehand, the winner of the latter contest was always going to know its round of 16 foes ahead of time. And it looked to all the world like Senegal would be the USA's opponent in Seattle on July 6. Belgium had other ideas. Trailing 2-0 with only four minutes of regular time left to play, the Red Devils stunned the Lions of Teranga on late goals by veteran forward Romelu Lukaku and captain Youri Tielemans. They then won the match in extra time on Tielemans successful penalty attempt. Combined with the Americanss victory, it sets up a rematch of the March World Cup tune-up between the sides one in which the Belgians outclassed Pochettinos team in a lopsided 5-2 loss. They also eliminated the U.S. in 2014. In fact, the Americans have lost six consecutive matches to Belgium. On Monday night in front of what promises to be another electric and partisan home crowd in Seattle, theyll get a chance to break that streak and advance to the last eight for the first time since 2002. 4. And Its Another Must-Win. Its not exactly the trap game that Wednesdays could have been, but that doesnt mean the U.S. can afford to squander the opportunity to keep the party going. The U.S. has now reached the last 16 in each of its last four World Cup appearances. In 2010, 2014 and 2022, thats the stage at which they were eliminated. Sure, the first hurdle has been cleared. Winning a knockout game is nothing to sneeze at. It doesnt happen every day. Still, for this tournament to truly be considered a success on home soil, the status quo wont really cut it. Its not going to be easy, especially with Balogun suspended. The Americans will still relish the challenge one theyll face head-on.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 123 Views 0 Vista previa -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe 76ers are taking a big swing on Jaylen Brown. How far can they go?One day shy of two months after the Philadelphia 76ers ended Jaylen Browns season, they did what so many pundits had tried and failed to do over the last half-decade. They split up the Jays. They found one hell of a way of doing it, too: by trading for Brown, in a day that scarcely anybody saw coming amid breathless prognostication over what would constitute an appropriate return for a five-time All-Star, two-time All-NBA selection and NBA Finals Most Valuable Player. In the end, it wasnt Giannis Antetokounmpo, or "four and even five first-round picks. It was Paul George 36 years young, two years removed from his last All-Star nod, having played fewer than 60 games in six of the last seven seasons, with a 25-game suspension for violating the terms of the NBAs anti-drug program this past campaign, and owed $110.7 million over the next two seasons an unprotected 2031 Sixers first-round pick, a 2028 first whose potential outcome is kind of complicated, and second-round picks in 2028 and 2030 that have already been multiply swapped (and could turn out to be pretty good).Whether that return sounds to you like a lot or a little likely depends on whether you grew up in South Boston or South Philly. (Youre not going to believe this, but Celtics fans and Sixers fans have A LOT OF BIG FEELINGS about this one.) And on what you think of George, who was excellent defensively (when available) in Philly and who showed up in a major way against Boston in the playoffs, but whose contract was largely considered to be such a negative asset that it would require some draft-pick incentivization to get another team to take it on. And on how highly you rate Brown which, in case you hadnt heard, is a whole friggin thing.Oh, also, on how optimistic you are that Brown, who turns 30 in October, will produce at an All-NBA level through the balance of the supermax contract extension he signed in 2023, which will pay him $183 million over the next three seasons.Speaking of which: Brown is eligible for a two-year, $142 million extension that would push that deal through 2030-31 which might have something to do with Brad Stevens sudden intense interest in moving him. Its perhaps worth noting that this deal saves the Celtics a few million bucks this season while also swapping one giant deal that runs through 2029 for another that ends a year earlier putting Boston in position to have virtually no long-term money outside of Jayson Tatums contract on the books after 2028. (Its also perhaps worth noting that, even after having been dangled for Antetokounmpo but not dealt, Brown reportedlyneverrequested a trade away from the team that drafted him third overall in 2016 and was shipped out anyway. Its a cold world; better pack your own heat.)Leaping at the opportunity to pay Brown $65 million two years from now is an awfully big first swing from new Sixers head honcho Mike Gansey. (Well, technically, I guess drafting Labaron Philon Jr., bringing back Dominick Barlow, letting Kelly Oubre Jr., Quentin Grimes and Trendon Watford walk, and bringing in Dean Wade and Ariel Hukporti all preceded this swing. So its an awfully big, um, eighth swing?) And agreeing to commit more than 94% of Phillys 2026-27 salary cap to the trio of Brown, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey feels both extremely steep (and somewhat anachronistic, in an era where having the depth to withstand the rigors of the 82-game marathon has never felt more important). But the Sixers were already built to be overwhelmingly top-heavy just with a Big Three that had only managed to be on the court together for a grand total of 36 games over two regular seasons. Bringing in Brown, who has played at least 1,900 minutes in each of the past nine seasons, makes Philadelphia younger nearly seven years younger than George more durable, more athletic and more explosive. It should also make them more adept at pressuring the rim: Only Deni Avdija drove to the basket more frequently than Brown last season, and only two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored more points per game on drives than Brown did. A perimeter trio of Maxey, Brown and rising sophomore VJ Edgecombe feels designed to give opposing head coaches headaches, and to ensure that opposing swingmen require extra treatment the next day. (The prospect of Edgecombe, who was sensational as a rookie and reacted to the Sixers second-round sweep at the hands of the eventual champion New York Knicks by vowing to make himself impossible for a defense to leave open, drawing an opponents third-best perimeter defender is extremely enticing.)The 76ers have split up the Jays. (Photo by Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)Maddie Meyer via Getty ImagesIt gives the Sixers the most dependable, high-level, two-way big wing theyve had since Jimmy Butler: a player who isnt the 3-point marksman that George is, but who otherwise looks like precisely the sort of gap-filling perimeter star the Sixers have been searching for between Maxey and Embiid. Brown has averaged more than 20 points, five rebounds and three assists per game in each of the last six seasons; the last Sixers forward to do that for one season was Chris Webber in 2005. Before him? Charles Barkley and Julius Erving. (Its been a rocky few decades.)It also gives Philly another viable Plan B. Brown just spent the last year proving hes capable of (pretty) efficiently soaking up a ton of usage and shot attempts in the absence of another signature star a useful skill set on a team that employs Embiid, whose health and availability are perpetually in question, and that should really try to lighten the workload on Maxey, who led the NBA in minutes per game last season and has played the 10th-most minutes in the league over the past five years. (That sound you just heard was Sixers head coach Nick Nurse, ever a bespectacled Thibs, taking that suggestion, crumpling it up and tossing it unthinkingly over his shoulder into the nearest trash can, all while getting down into a deeeeep squat.)Brown, of course, doesnt view himself as a Plan B. He sees himself as a bona fide star: a player capable of being the best performer in the NBA Finals, of helping shoulder the burden of a historic franchise for a decade, and of propelling a team ravaged by injuries and salary-cap-slashing defections to 56 wins and the No. 2 seed. And its that strong sense of self, combined with what you can only imagine is an incredible amount of anger at the franchise hed helped shepherd shipping him off for a shorter contract and a couple of picks, that could make Brown an even better pickup for the Sixers: someone intent on proving beyond all doubt to everyone from anonymous analytics staffers to Celtics ownership that he is exactly as big a difference-maker as he believes himself to be, and doing so by teaming with Maxey, Edgecombe and a hopefully-mostly-healthy Embiid to lift Philadelphia past the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2001.Im not sure the Sixers are there yet. As presently constituted, they seem to be depending a lot on Wade, whose 3-point shot has largely disappeared in the playoffs and whose minutes declined throughout the Cleveland Cavaliers four-game sweep by New York in the Eastern Conference finals. (Though, from the sound of if, theyre at least kicking the tires on a slightly higher-wattage option at the 4.) A reserve corps of Barlow, Hukporti, Philon, Adem Bona, Jabari Walker and Justin Edwards could probably use some reinforcements; those might be tough to come by, with Philly now hard-capped at the first apron, with only their biannual exception and a slice of their midlevel exception left, according to Derek Bodner of PHLY Sports. And, obviously, as ever, The Embiid Question looms large over the entire enterprise. And yet: The Sixers entered Wednesday as a play-in team that didnt seem to have too much of a reason to harbor hopes of being much more than that, and they exit it with what should be an extremely motivated prime-aged All-NBA player who just averaged 29 points per game. Yes, it cost them some draft capital, and yes, that carries with it some risk; theres a chance that we could look back on Ganseys from-the-heels uppercut swing in a few years as yet another misbegotten move that doomed yet another era of Sixers basketball. (If nothing else, itll have some company.)But in Adam Silvers much-ballyhooed parity of opportunity era, where repeat champions are a thing of the past and championship windows only stay open for about 15 minutes (if they ever open at all), its reasonable to at least consider that fortune might favor the bold. That, if youre pretty good and have a chance to get better than that, that if you can crowbar open one of those vanishingly thin windows of contention, you might just be a couple of breaks away from the conference finals and that, from there, anything can happen.Nobody saw the Pacers getting to Game 7 until they were there. Nobody saw the Knicks lording over the league until they were hoisting the Larry OB. Nobody saw Kawhi Leonard going back to Toronto, and nobody saw Philly emerging as the Jaylen Brown team. And yet, here we are contemplating the possibility that the Raptors and Sixers, not the Celtics and Pistons, could wind up representing the East in 11 months time.Toronto took its shot on Tuesday. Philadelphia responded in kind on Wednesday. Well have to wait to find out whether either of them hit the target; that they let it fly, though, could augur a monstrous, unpredictable, and pretty damn exciting season in the Eastern Conference.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 134 Views 0 Vista previa

WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMUSMNT Player Ratings vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina: USA Rallies After Red CardWhile this World Cup has been a lot of fun to follow for the USA, this journey is about this group. Its a thing of beauty, and its not even finished. So many more people are hopping on this train right now. It was incredible to see these players being serenaded with the love they received. Its well-deserved. Keep making us proud. For now, 10s across the board. Here are my player ratings from Wednesday night. Starting XI He made the saves he was supposed to make and kept a clean sheet. He hasnt had that one "oh my god" save that hes had to make, but hes made the ones that hes had to. There was a little blip and rush of blood to the head late in the game, but well take a clean sheet every day. The backline as a unit was phenomenal. They handled the early siege of half-chances from Bosnia and Herzegovina very well. They were warriors against the ball, especially in the second half after the red card. Another really responsible performance from the USA backline. We have endless funds in the "ATM" machine. Tyler has been an unsung hero. He does all the dirty work and patrols the midfield so well. In a game that was as scrappy as it was, with so much of the play getting disrupted with choppy fouls, he remained extremely composed. Weston delivered another all-around top performance. His endless running beyond the back line is just epic. And then theres Malik. Malik can take this free kick maybe 30 times and maybe he makes one. The top, top players deliver that one in the most crucial moment. Weve seen the best of Tillman in tournaments. We saw him flourish at the Gold Cup last year with a consistent run of games. It has been the same thing with this World Cup. Hes found such great balance alongside Wes and Tyler. Also, the fact that no one received a yellow card in that game is incredible and a great sign moving forward. Overall, I thought these three were dangerous. I think they can constantly cause problems when they get on the ball. Theyre always looking to go one-on-one against defenders. Balos running off the ball was causing problems. We probably didnt feed him as much as we needed to, but hes a consistent workhorse. His appetite to be aggressive is golden. For his reward, he got his goal because of his work up front on the counterpress. Im not going to fault Flo for the red card. Its unfortunate the way that their feet came together and that he stamped on his foot. Obviously, it sucks that hes going to miss the next game, but that red card isnt going to impact my ratings.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 92 Views 0 Vista previa
