WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMTigers Rookie Kevin McGonigle Set For Hometown All-Star Appearance In PhiladelphiaDetroit Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle can't wait to go home for the All-Star Game in Philadelphia. "I'm super pumped," McGonigle said Sunday before facing his hometown Phillies. Even though McGonigle is just 21, he has had a lot of travel bags for baseball. None, though, was like the white one sitting on the carpeted floor next to his chair in the Tigers' clubhouse. The duffel bag was adorned with the All-Star Game logo and there was an Old English D on each end. "Id say this is the best one I've ever had," McGonigle said. He earned it. Since the first All-Star Game in 1933, Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout and Hall of Famer Al Kaline are the two players who have reached base safely more often than McGonigle at the break. The Tigers thought McGonigle would be good, but no one could have projected this much production so early in his career. Detroit drafted McGonigle with the No. 37 pick in 2023 and he spent two-plus years in the minor leagues, skipping a stop at Triple-A Toledo, as a promising prospect. Shortly after McGonigle made the major league roster during spring training and had four hits in his debut, the franchise saw enough to give him a $150 million, eight-year contract. So far, it certainly looks like a wise investment. "It's so impressive how mature he is in the box," Tigers All-Star outfielder Riley Greene said. "You don't see many people at 21 having at-bats as good as him." Since 1947, he is the fifth rookie 21 or younger to have at least 99 hits before the All-Star Game. "He's a good-looking, young player," said Phillies manager Don Mattingly, who was quite a player himself. "Young guys seem to be coming up a lot more often, and doing well right away. "Seeing him in the spring, he swung the bat. In spring you kind of go, 'OK, we'll see,' with young guys and then obviously, he has taken it into the season and he's still rolling." McGonigle, who was born in Media, Pennsylvania, and attended high school in nearby Drexel Hill, shared his picks for the best cheesesteaks in the Philadelphia area ahead of the Home Run Derby on Monday night and the All-Star Game on Tuesday night. "Delcos Steaks in Delaware County, which is where I'm from, is my favorite," he said. "In the city, Philips is a sleeper. There's a different way they cut the meat, and it's really good." WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMPhillies' Cristopher Snchez, Jays' Dylan Cease To Start 2026 MLB All-Star GameCristopher Snchez will start Tuesday night's 2026 MLB All-Star Game in his home ballpark, taking the mound for the National League against Dylan Cease of the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays announced Sunday that Cease will be the American League's starter. Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who is managing the NL, said Sanchez is his starter. "I think he deserves it. Hes the hometown ballplayer and I think the city of Philly will enjoy watching him and supporting him," Roberts said. "I had a conversation with him this morning. ... He was very grateful. In a time when guys are not wanting to participate, this guy in the Midsummer Classic for fans, I think this is a good thing. Hes very excited about pitching." Also Sunday, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said right-hander Cam Schlittler is not planning to pitch in the All-Star Game. Schlittler will still be at the game and there is no replacement planned for the AL roster. Sanchez is 11-4 with a 2.62 ERA this season. He's third in the major leagues with 144 strikeouts. The left-hander's streak of 50 2/3 scoreless innings was a highlight of the major-league season so far. Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski, who leads the majors in ERA (1.62), WHIP (0.76) and strikeouts (167), was replaced on the NL All-Star roster earlier in the week, when it appeared he would be starting for the Brewers on Sunday. Then, Milwaukee scratched him from that start because of arm fatigue. Cease is 6-4 with a 2.56 ERA for the Blue Jays. He nearly threw his second career no-hitter Wednesday against San Francisco, but it was broken up in the ninth inning. Cease is the first Toronto pitcher to start the All-Star Game since Roy Halladay in 2009. Schlittler was a candidate to start, boasting an AL-leading ERA of 2.05, but he pitched for the Yankees on Saturday. "Just feels like on his recovery day to go back out there throwing 100 mph is something that I think he felt a little apprehensive about," Boone told reporters before New York's game at the Washington Nationals. "Certainly support that decision, and obviously I think he understands whats at stake here in the second half too for us and for him." Schlittler could start the opening game of the second half against the Dodgers on Friday at Yankee Stadium. Reporting by The Associated Press.0 Comments 0 Shares 188 Views 0 Reviews -

WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMWorld Cup Expansion? FIFA President Gianni Infantino Says It Will Be 'Examined'First, the College Football Playoff expanded to 12 teams. Then, the NCAA Tournament expanded to 76 teams. Meanwhile, FIFA is in the midst of its newfound 48-team World Cup (the World Cup previously included 32 counties). On that note, does FIFA have its sights set on tournament expansion again? After saying that the 48-team 2026 World Cup has been "a huge success," FIFA president Gianni Infantino opened the door to add another 16 teams to the tournament for the 2030 World Cup. "Thats definitely an issue that will be examined and discussed in the relevant committees after this World Cup," Infantino said when asked about the possibility of expanding the World Cup to 64 teams in an interview with Swiss media outlet Bluewin. "When organizing a World Cup, its important to organize it for the whole world not just Europe and South America, but effectively the entire world. Every nation should be allowed to dream of participating in the World Cup." Infantino believes the quality of teams is only improving, which could play into a potential expansion down the road. "You can see that the quality of the teams is extremely high and its getting higher and higher, all over the world," Infantino continued. "If you dont give smaller countries a chance to participate in the World Cup, theyll lack the incentive to keep improving." The inaugural Men's World Cup in 1930 included 13 teams, with that number moving to 16 on a permanent basis in 1954 (there were 16 teams in 1934, 15 in 1938 and 13 in 1950, with no World Cup in 1942 due to World War II or in 1946 due to the impact of the war). It later moved to 24 teams in 1982 and 32 teams in 1998, which was the number of countries in the tournament until 2026. As for the World Cup in progress, Kylian Mbapp and France will face off against Lamine Yamal and Spain in the semifinal round on Tuesday; Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and England will take on Lionel Messi and Argentina in the semifinals on Wednesday. The winner of the two semifinal round matches will square off in the 2026 World Cup Final on Sunday, July 19 at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (3 p.m. ET on FOX and FOX One).0 Comments 0 Shares 232 Views 0 Reviews
