The 33-year-old re-signed with Hendrick Motorsports for a one-year deal to remain in the No. 48 car next season, but will step away from full-time competition following the 36-race campaign.Many questions surrounded Bowmans status heading into the 2026 season. It has been well-documented that the Arizona native was in a contract year at HMS.On top of that, Bowman has been under the spotlight for his performance struggles this season coupled with missing four races due to a vertigo diagnosis.On Thursday, Bowmans NASCAR future was made clear.Bowman signs one-year extension, will retire after 2027HMS released a statement regarding Bowmans status on Thursday. The team stated the eight-time Cup Series winner will remain with the organization next year, but will subsequently retire from full-time competition.Car owner Rick Hendrick expressed gratitude for Bowmans contributions to HMS and is pleased that he will be finishing his full-time NASCAR career at the place he spent the majority of his Cup Series career.Alex has meant so much to our organization for a long time. Hes overcome adversity, won big races and represented our team and partners with professionalism, personality and class. Alex is a tremendous talent in the race car and an even better person outside of it. Were proud hell have the opportunity to finish his full-time career with us on his terms. To have the chance to do that with this organization and these people is really special, Bowman said. Bowman switched from No. 88 to No. 48 in 2021 and won a career-high four races that year. He went on to win at Las Vegas in 2022 and the Chicago street race in 2024, with the latter being his latest win to date.Bowmans retirement announcement comes during trying 2026 seasonIn the third race of the 2026 season at Circuit of The Americas, Bowman exited the race prematurely. It was discovered days later that Bowman had vertigo, which forced him out of the next four Cup Series races.From the time Bowman returned, the No. 48 team has struggled to produce quality results. Bowman is out of contention for The Chase as he sits 29th in the points standings. He has three top fives and four top 10s in 17 starts this season.It is not the first time Bowman has been sidelined from Cup competition. In September 2022, Bowman suffered a concussion after a crash at Texas Motor Speedway, forcing him to sit out for five straight races.In 2023, Bowman missed three races after suffering a fractured back in a sprint car crash.Injuries and illnesses have unfortunately plagued Bowman throughout his career. "Just walking around, he is a mean, stalky guy. Tarik Skubals comments about the Detroit Tigers arbitration process arent going away.Just one day after The Athletic published an interview in which the Tigers ace admitted the organizations decision to take him to arbitration may have subconsciously influenced how he handled an elbow issue this past offseason, Skubal was asked to expand on those remarks before Thursdays game against the Kansas City Royals.His response made one thing clear: while he insists the arbitration process hasnt affected his relationships inside the clubhouse, he believes it unquestionably impacts the relationship between a player and the organization.Skubal Says Arbitration Changes RelationshipsWhen asked about the arbitration process, Skubal didnt sugarcoat his feelings.Of course, when a team takes a player to arbitration, there arent a lot of positive things that come out of that relationship-wise. I think thats pretty obvious.Those comments come on the heels of Skubals admission that he knew something was wrong with his elbow in January but delayed getting an MRI.At the time, he explained why.If I could go back, I probably should have got an MRI in January and hammered it out to where I was done with it in the offseason, Skubal said. But there were also other factors in play. I was going through arbitration. The decision by the organization to take me to court, I think that probably had some impact subconsciously.That revelation sparked widespread discussion across baseball, with many wondering whether the business side of the game had influenced one of the sports premier pitchers to delay addressing a potentially serious injury.Clubhouse Relationships Remain StrongWhile Skubal acknowledged the strain arbitration can create between a player and a club, he was quick to separate that from his day to day relationships inside the Tigers clubhouse.My relationship with the coaching staff, the players, and my teammates has never changed. Its the same as its always been, and thats how its supposed to be.That distinction is important.Skubal made it clear he has no issues with manager A.J. Hinch, the coaching staff, or his teammates. His comments were directed at the business side of baseball, not the people he takes the field with every night.You Guys Should Experience That YourselvesSkubal also suggested that its difficult to understand arbitration without living through it.As far as sitting through the arbitration process, you guys should experience that yourselves.For those unfamiliar, arbitration hearings can become uncomfortable. Teams often highlight a players weaknesses and argue why he isnt worth the salary hes requesting. While its part of Major League Baseballs labor system, many players have described the experience as one of the least enjoyable parts of their careers.Business Is BusinessDespite everything thats unfolded, Skubal says he has worked to keep baseball and business separate.It is what it is. Its the business of the game. Business and baseball are two separate things, and you try to keep them separate. I think Ive done a good job of that. Im just worried about doing my job, competing, and putting our team in a position to win a baseball game.Those comments may help provide additional context to his earlier remarks, but theyre unlikely to quiet the conversation.Skubal Says MRI Story Has Been Blown Out of ProportionSkubal also sought to clarify the comments that ignited the latest wave of headlines, emphasizing that he never refused medical treatment or ignored recommendations from the Tigers medical staff.Instead, he said everyone believed his elbow was improving after an early setback.Thats just hindsight. I thought we were trending in the right direction throughout the whole process. I had a hiccup in January, but I didnt know what was going on. I thought it was just a different kind of soreness. Id never dealt with anything like that before.According to Skubal, there simply wasnt a reason to pursue imaging at the time because both he and the organization believed the issue was resolving itself.We were trending the right way. Thats why there was no MRI. There wasnt even a discussion about an MRI. I kept making starts, I kept helping the team, and I felt like I was doing my job.It wasnt until his outing in Atlanta, when the discomfort worsened significantly, that the situation changed.Then I had the incident in Atlanta. The next two days werent great, and thats why I decided to have an MRI and ultimately have the surgery.Skubal also pushed back against some of the public reaction that followed his original comments, saying many of the narratives surrounding the situation have been inaccurate.That whole thing was blown out of proportion. I get it, but a lot of what has been said isnt true or factual. The idea that I denied getting an MRI isnt something I even need to address because Im not going to play that game. A lot of things that are said about me just arent true. It is what it is.While he admitted he would have handled things differently knowing what he knows now, Skubal stressed that hindsight makes those decisions look much easier than they felt at the time.Of course, in hindsight, I would have gotten an MRI in January if I knew it wasnt going to get better. But I didnt. I thought it was getting better for three months until it wasnt.He closed by acknowledging that the situation appears much more obvious looking back than it actually was while he was living through it.Youd think that would be more obvious than it was, but it is what it is.Those comments provide additional context to the remarks that generated so much attention earlier this week. While Skubal continues to maintain that the arbitration process may have had a subconscious effect on his thinking, he insists the decision not to get an MRI in January was driven by the belief that his elbow was improving, not because he rejected medical advice or knowingly pitched through a serious injury.The Bottom LineTaken together, Skubals comments paint a more complete picture of where things stand.He isnt suggesting his relationships with teammates or coaches have changed, nor is he claiming arbitration caused his elbow issue. Instead, hes acknowledging something many players around baseball have long said: the arbitration process can strain the relationship between a player and the front office.Whether Tigers fans accept that explanation is another matter.With Skubal represented by Scott Boras, trade rumors swirling, and free agency inching closer, every public comment is being examined through a much larger lens. This years Mississippi American Senior Legion State Tournament will have heavy area representation.Three of the four teams involved the Tupelo 49ers, Baldwyn Blue Aces and Pontotoc Red Sox hail from the northeast and have played one another nine times in the regular season. The Brandon Black Sox round out the four-team field.Pontotoc beat Tupelo in the finals last season, but the Red Sox will need to defend their title without some key pitchers: Connor Yarbrough, Miller Finn and Caden Farmer.Those were kind of my top three pitching staff guys that I had, Red Sox coach Scott Cummings said. So it's kind of changed the dynamic.Many of the Niners on last years team still have the taste of that loss stuck in their mouths. The team has been on a mission ever since and, in the eyes of coach Russell Bunch, is playing its best ball at the right time.Pitchers like Aidan Strong and Brody Wilson have Bunch confident.We're on a mission this year to right that wrong, in our eyes, Bunch said. But we're going to have to play some really good ball, because I figured Pontotoc, Baldwyn and Brandon will all throw a pretty good punch this weekend.Shawn Hairald has been coaching the Blue Aces for over 30 years, and the chemistry of this team rivals any of his previous groups. Hitters like Jase Pee and pitchers like John Greyson Pharr lead the charge.If we can pitch and play defense the way we're capable of, we're perfectly fine, Hairald said. If we're deficient in an area, it's going to be stringing hits together, because we've got a few that do that well, and then if we could get the others to jump on board, but that's where we're deficient as a team.All games will be played at The Plex on the campus of Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville. Pontotoc faces Baldwyn to start the tournament on Friday at 4:30 p.m., with Tupelo facing Brandon at 7 p.m.A champion of the double-elimination tournament will be crowned on Sunday. That champion will advance to the Mid-South Regional tournament in Washington, Missouri, bringing it one step closer to the American Legion World Series in Shelby, North Carolina.

Las Vegas Summer League is firmly behind the Sin City Celtics, their identity now starting to morph toward being the Boston Celtics ball club we will see on the court for the NBA's 2026-27 regular season. Training camp and preseason are still there for the deeper rotation players to earn themselves a role, and the Celtics incoming class of rookies and undrafted players will also be fighting to assure their place with the team as well.Rookies Chris Cenac Jr. and Dillon Mitchell stand out in particular as potential deep rotation options who could conceivably see the floor with Boston this coming campaign. But they have some serious competition ahead of them and some limitations to their play to go with some surprising developments that were on display in summer league.
