Ty Simpson now last remaining unsigned 1st round pick
THE 2026 ESPYS PRESENTED BY CAPITAL ONE - Hosted by Marcello Hernndez, who will bring his signature humor to the stage as he joins a star-studded roster of athletes and celebrities honoring the greatest achievements in the world of sports. "The ESPYS" will air live on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 8 p.m. EDT/7 p.m. CDT on ABC, ESPN+ and be available to stream next day on Hulu. (Disney/Frank Micelotta) FERNANDO MENDOZA (Photo by Frank Micelotta/Disney via Getty Images) | Disney via Getty ImagesThe Los Angeles Rams dont usually make first-round picks and maybe Ty Simpsons prolonged waiting game to sign his rookie contract helps explain why, especially now that Fernando Mendoza is under contract. Mendoza and Simpson were the last two first-round picks who had not signed their rookie contracts, but that changed on Thursday as the Las Vegas Raiders officially locked down the first overall pick of the draft.Mendoza signed a four-year, $57 million deal, which we all knew would happen because of the rookie pay scale as per the CBA. We already know what Simpson is going to sign for, we already know it will be fully-guaranteed, but the Rams continue to work on contract language with the 13th overall pick. The only other two unsigned rookies in the NFL are quarterback Drew Allar and edge rusher Gabe Jacas. One finally is done: The Raiders and No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza reached agreement today on a four-year, $57.2 million contract. With the Raiders rookies having reported to camp, Mendoza now can get to work. pic.twitter.com/5wBD7nP1UH Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 23, 2026As per Blaine Grisaks interview with Joel Corry of CBS Sports, the wait with Simpson is likely related to a signing bonus:Simpsons camp is probably insisting that the Rams extend the 2024 quarterback payment convention to him since he was drafted one slot lower than Nix, said Corry. Nearly every team besides the Jaguars and Rams requires offsets with salary guarantees for draft picks, including those selected in the top 10.Based on past practices, Simpsons contract with the Rams shouldnt contain offsets, continued Corry. The last time the Rams had a first-round pick, edge rusher Jared Verse in 2024, his contract did not contain offsets in the salary guarantees despite being the 19th overall selection. The Rams report to camp on Saturday. Will Ty Simpson be there?

Yankees Sequence of the Week: Brent Headrick (7/20)
NEW YORK, NY - JULY 17: Brent Headrick #47 of the New York Yankees reacts during the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Yankee Stadium on July 17, 2026 in New York, New York. (Photo by New York Yankees/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesThe Yankees offense still feels stuck in first gear but fortunately their bullpen has transformed into one of the most shutdown units in the sport, which alongside stellar starting pitching has led to three wins in their last four. One of the biggest factors in the bullpens turnaround in form has been the performances of Brent Headrick, who earns his second nod on Sequence of the Week.We join Headrick with two outs in the top of the seventh in Mondays series opener against the Pirates. The bases are empty, but Pittsburghs most dangerous hitter is stepping to the plate. Rookie outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez has done nothing but rake since getting called up amid the Bucs rash of injuries, leading MLB with a 242 wRC+ since June 19th and seven home runs in eight games leading into the doubleheader. He represents the Pirates biggest threat as the Yankees attempt to protect their 8-5 lead.Valdez has done the majority of his damage against the heater, but that doesnt deter Headrick, who fearlessly attacks with a first-pitch four-seamer as if daring Valdez to beat his best with his own best. View LinkValdez doesnt bite on this low four-seamer, only to watch it clip the bottom ledge of the zone for a called strike one as the pitch does not drop as much over its course toward home as one might expect. Its such a valuable pitch to earn the strike one call as it now forces Valdez to respect any pitch that starts aimed at the bottom of the zone, thus opening up limitless opportunity for chase and whiff with secondaries below the zone. That is exactly Headricks thinking, as he follows the heater up with a splitter below the zone looking for a chase. View LinkThis is a really impressive take from Valdez. The four-seamer exits Headricks hand out of a similar tunnel as the pitch that was just called a low strike, only to drop off the table about halfway toward home. Valdez reads it well as it bounces in the dirt beyond home for ball one. Perhaps sensing that Valdez will not be easily tempted into chase below the zone, Headrick returns to the four-seamer.View LinkIts amazing how many whiffs Headrick gets on four-seamers just like this one. This pitch seems like a cookie at just 94 mph and pretty much down the middle. However, we see time and again how Headricks four-seamer almost explodes on the hitter, resulting in late swings beneath the pitch. Thats because Headrick gets elite extension and induced vertical break on the pitch, turning it into an invisiball of sorts as it plays up well above its velocity. That whiff underneath the four-seamer is just the reinforcement Headrick needs to throw another one, he and Austin Wells looking to climb the ladder with the pitch.View LinkThis is the definition of a perfect four-seamer, dotted on the corner up and away with elite riding life. Once again, Valdez whiffs underneath, unable to adjust his swing path to a fastball that flies truer than many hitters are used to seeing. Heres the full sequence:Headrick has been at the heart of the Yankees bullpen renaissance that has seen some unlikely heroes step up including Paul Blackburn and Angel Chivilli as well as a rediscovery of shutdown form from David Bednar. Those four relievers have allowed just six earned runs in their last combined 95.1 innings. Headrick in particular has quietly become one of the best relievers in MLB this year, placing in the top-ten in ERA (1.40), FIP (2.19), and fWAR (1.5). He has not allowed a run in 43 of his 51 appearances, which is the most in the majors, even more than the Padres historically good closer Mason Miller. If the relief corps can keep up this level of performance combined with a starting rotation that just got Max Fried back with Carlos Rodns own return from injury looming on the horizon, this becomes a tough pitching staff to score against from top to bottom.

LeBrons Free Agency Continues to Stall NBA Offseason
LeBron James continues to hold up the rest of the NBA while he decides on his next team.It has been 23 days since James parted ways with the Lakers after eight seasons, leading to nearly a month full of speculation as to where the 41-year-old will play next.NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently said at a CNBC event last week that the league cant formally set its schedule without knowing where one of its biggest stars will be playing. We have to finish up the schedule, and where LeBron plays affects the schedule, Silver said. It will influence how we set the scheduleopening week, Christmas. So I need him to make a decision. But James is also holding up the rest of free agency around the league as several key players remain unsigned, with the teams interested in them remaining in a holding pattern until the NBAs all-time leading scorer makes up his mind.A common denominator among some of the main unsigned free agents: They are also represented by James agent in Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul.In most years, the NBA goes into hibernation in late July. The leagues personnel and media descend on Las Vegas for Summer League when most of free agency is wrapped up and then head out on vacation until the regular season comes within view in September. But James is extending the offseason and is holding up deals for multiple teams and potential teammates as he ponders his destination. Were definitely working later than usual, one front office executive told Front Office Sports.Jamess free agency has extended longer than any of his previous ones combined. In 2010, he went eight days before announcing he would sign with the Heat during The Decision. The time between his departure from Miami and return to Cleveland four years later lasted 10 days. And it took just 18 hours for James to announce he was heading west to Los Angeles in 2018 .All of Jamess free agencies began with an ending in mind. He ended his first one on ESPN, second with a Sports Illustrated op-ed, and third through the Klutch Sports X account. But the length of his current free agency leads one to wonder whether it has the gameplan his previous ones had.First in line for new deals after James decides are James Harden (Cavaliers) and Draymond Green (Warriors). Harden declined his $42.3 million player option for next season on June 29, the day before James parted ways with the Lakers, to sign a long-term deal in Cleveland. Harden, who turns 37 next month, wants an NBA championship and is reportedly willing to sign for less money to have James alongside him.The Cavaliers could potentially offer James the full mid-level exception of $15 million if Harden takes a pay cut and if the team trades Jarrett Allen and Max Strus. But if James is fine taking the veteran minimum of roughly $4 million, it wouldnt be necessary. Then theres the case of Green, who declined his $27 million player option with the Warriors in an attempt to help lure James to Golden State. The Warriors can offer James the full mid-level exception without performing any trades, but it would require Green to sign for less. Green is another Klutch client James is keeping in limbo.Peyton Watson, another Klutch client, and Jalen Duren, round out some of the other major un-signed free agents all awaiting a decision from James. The post LeBrons Free Agency Continues to Stall NBA Offseason appeared first on Front Office Sports.

A Seahawks 53-man roster projection: Pre-training camp edition
RENTON, WASHINGTON - JUNE 11: Nehemiah Pritchett #28 of the Seattle Seahawks stretches during practice at Virginia Mason Athletic Center on June 11, 2026 in Renton, Washington. (Photo by Jack Compton/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesThe Seattle Seahawks begin their 2026 training camp this Saturday, as the Super Bowl champions look to be the first NFC team to win back-to-back titles since Jimmy Johnsons Dallas Cowboys in the 1990s. Yeah, its really been that long since there was an NFC dynasty. There are plenty of intriguing roster battles on both sides of the ball, but especially on defense, where the bulk of the Seahawks offseason changes occurred. Before camp officially begins, Im giving it another crack at projecting the initial 53-man roster. Offense (26)Quarterback (3): Sam Darnold, Drew Lock, Jalen MilroeCut: N/ANotes: Milroe might be competing not to get traded, otherwise it should be the same set-up as last year as long as Milroe doesnt have a disastrous camp and/or preseason.Running Back (3): Jadarian Price (R), Emanuel Wilson, George HolaniCut: Jacardia Wright, Kenny McIntoshPUP: Zach CharbonnetNotes: Charbonnet is confirmed to be on PUP, while McIntosh is starting camp on PUP. I anticipate the latter being available to practice soon. Jadarian Price, Emanuel Wilson, and George Holani will surely be the top three backs, and its up to a numbers game to see if Wright or McIntosh earns a fourth spot while Charbonnet is gone. Most likely, they stick with three and shift one of Wright or Kenny to the practice squad.Fullback (2): Robbie Ouzts, Brady RussellCut: N/ANotes: Seattle is definitely going to be using full backs, and I hope under Brian Fleury that Ouzts can be something other than a tell that the Seahawks are running the ball. Ouzts had some tight end skills in college, so use it to your advantage! Russell is a fullback/tight end hybrid but really hes there as a special teams beast.Wide Receiver (5): Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp, Rashid Shaheed, Tory Horton, Jake BoboCut: Emmanuel Henderson Jr (R), Cody White, Ricky White III, Velus Jones Jr, Irv Charles, Rashad Rochelle,Montorie FosterNotes: Either Seattle keeps five receivers or six, in which case Im curious to see if Ricky White III can make good on his second season with the team. Seattle re-signing Shaheed and Bobo in the offseason essentially took away the drama as far as the wide receiver room.Tight End (3): A.J. Barner, Elijah Arroyo, Eric SaubertCut: Lance Mason(R), Nick KallerupNotes: I have a feeling Kallerup is on the bubble, or at least competing with the rookie Lance Mason. Seattle keeping Kallerup on the active roster all of last season is encouraging but doesnt mean his spot is now guaranteed for 2026. It may make sense to keep four TEs when the team runs so much 12 and 13 personnel, but Id sooner believe the Seahawks would just make use of Ouzts or Russell when they want to go heavier and stash Kallerup and/or Mason on the practice squad.Offensive Line (10): Charles Cross, Abe Lucas, Josh Jones, Mason Richman, Anthony Bradford, Olu Oluwatimi, Jalen Sundell, Grey Zabel, Bryce Cabeldue, Beau Stephens(R)Cut: Federico Maranges, Bobby Hart, Amari Kight, Logan Brown, Christian HaynesNotes: Brady Henderson has referenced and at least speculated Oluwatimi possibly being traded on an expiring contract. For now, I think he stays and Seattle will let him walk in free agency. Beau Stephens may eventually challenge or (in 2027) replace Bradford as right guard, but bare minimum I think its a wrap for Christian Haynes. I think Seattle may max out at keeping only nine linemen in the long run but the initial 53 could have 10.Defense (24)Defensive Line (5): Byron Murphy II, Leonard Williams, Jarran Reed, Rylie Mills, Mike MorrisCut: J.R. Singleton, Bubba Thomas, Brandon Pili, Uso Seumalo (R)PUP/Injury stash: Deven Eastern (R)Notes: Mills will be one to watch in training camp and preseason now that hell have a healthy offseason under his belt. Eastern missing much of OTAs and minicamp has me thinking hell just be given the NFL equivalent of a medical redshirt. Seattle lacks a traditional nose tacklethey pretty much have Jarran Reed as the nosebut Seattle may just stash Pili and/or Seumalo on the practice squad and elevate when needed. Ive had Mike Morris on the bubble for seemingly ever and hes still here, so I might as well back off until theres evidence he could be let go.Outside Linebacker (5): Derick Hall, Uchenna Nwosu, Dante Fowler Jr, DeMarcus Lawrence, Aidan Hubbard (R)Cut: Jared Ivey, Connor OToole, Marvin Jones Jr (R), Jamie Sheriff, Jalan GainesNotes: Ive not changed from the pre-OTAs projection. Hubbard is my lone UDFA to crack the roster. Ivey and OToole just miss out and at least one of the two gets put on the practice squad. The only reason I would counter myself to put Ivey over Hubbard is Iveys large frame as an edge could provide something of a unique look.Inside Linebacker (4): Ernest Jones IV, Drake Thomas, Tyrice Knight, Chris Paul JrCut: Chazz Surratt, Patrick OConnell, JaMarkis WestonNotes: Pooh Paul is still a great unknown in the Seahawks defense. This is just a pure hunch that could be quickly undone once we get to practices. Surratt was a cheap FA re-sign limited to special teams, but he might get the spot over Paul and others if it comes down to ST value. OConnell is a perennial ready squad guy so I dont worry about him.Cornerback (5): Devon Witherspoon, Josh Jobe, Nehemiah Pritchett, Julian Neal (R), Noah IgbinogheneCut: Shemar Jean-Charles, Brandon Johnson, Michael Dansby (R), Tyrone Broden, Andre Fuller (R)Notes: Witherspoon and Jobe are locks, Neal is pretty much a lock, so that leaves Pritchett, Fuller, Johnson, Igbinoghene, and Dansby as five guys competing for two spots. Ive thought about it some more and for now, I think Pritchett and Igbinoghene have the inside track and that leaves Fuller and Dansby in particular on the outside looking in. Safety (5): Julian Love, Ty Okada, Nick Emmanwori, Bud Clark (R), Rodney Thomas IICut: Maxen Hook, DAnthony Bell, A. J. FinleyNotes: I think the final spot comes down to Thomas or Bell. Seattle has familiarity with Bell dating back to last season, but Thomas has more experience as a defensive starter while maintaining a high special teams count. Special Teams (3)Kicker (1): Jason MyersPunter (1): Michael DicksonLong Snapper (1): Chris StollCut: No oneNotes: Theres nothing to discuss here. Its like having three free spaces on the giant Seahawks bingo board. There will be more regular roster projections once preseason begins, as by then well have a clearer picture of who has the inside track and whose bubbles are about to burst. Well also have a metric ton of signings and waivers during that time frame that will make previous projections obsolete, so it keeps things fresh and exciting. The only thing Im certain of is that it will be very difficult to predict the bottom end of the roster, which is a testament to the talent level the Seahawks currently possess.Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:Fewer adsCreate community postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community postsNew, improved notifications system!

Shohei Ohtani was nearly hurt by his own teammate while leaving Dodgers dugout
Shohei Ohtani hasn't pitched in 20 days as he's been dealing with knee pain, which actually required a minor procedure over the All-Star break. So, the absolute last thing Ohtani needed at this point was some elbow pain on top of that. It's safe to say that Alex Call will be more careful after Wednesday's scare. As the Dodgers were ready to celebrate their 9-5 win over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, Call and Ohtani were climbing over the dugout barrier to join their teammates on the field. Instead of calmly going over that barrier, Call went for a more exaggerated maneuver and inadvertently kicked Ohtani's right elbow. You could just see the fear in Call's eyes as that unfolded. The Dodgers are off on Thursday, so we'll have to see if Ohtani's status is impacted at all. But he did seem to wave off to Call as if he was fine. Maybe take the stairs next time, Alex? That could have been horrible. Jonathan Jones leaves CBS to become "senior writer" at The Athletic
The "advanced talks" have advanced all the way to a done deal.Jonathan Jones announced on Thursday that he has left CBS. The Athletic separately announced that Jones will become a "senior writer" covering the NFL.Per the item posted by The Athletic, "Jonathan will focus on bringing behind-the-scenes stories to the forefront, breaking news and capturing game moments with deeply reported articles and video analysis."Jones had worked for CBS since 2019.The Athletic has not yet filled its "NFL Insider" role following the abrupt resignation of Dianna Russini in April, a week after photos emerged of Russini with Patriots coach Mike Vrabel at a resort in Arizona. (The Athletic also has not yet concluded its internal investigation regarding Russini's reporting.)It's possible, if not likely, that The Athletic will not have an "NFL Insider" in the sense that the job has evolved. Frankly, it would be difficult if not impossible for an "NFL Insider" to do the job competitively while also complying with the high journalistic standards of the New York Times, which apply by extension to The Athletic. Throw in the lingering newsroom tensions regarding the perception that The Athletic is held to a lower bar, and it arguably makes no sense to have an employee in a role that necessitates the kind of relationships that the Times would regard as actual or apparent conflicts of interest.

    The 'Tarps Off' Trend Explained
One of the biggest fan traditions to emerge from the 2026 baseball season didn't start with a mascot or a chant. Instead, it involved fans ripping off their shirts and spinning them over their heads in an attempt to fire up the stadium during big moments.Known as the "Tarps Off Trend," the celebration craze has spread across college football, Major League Baseball (MLB) and other sporting events, turning shirt-twirling into a viral rallying ritual. While most people have probably only heard of this phenomenon in the last couple of months, the trend goes back much further and riffs on the slang term "tarp," referring to a shirt, that's been around even longer. So, where did this trend originally start, and how did it become one of the defining sports fan crazes of 2026? Let's explain.Where Does The 'Tarps Off' Trend Come From? The phrase "tarps off" is slang for going shirtless, but the viral sports trend largely traces its origins to an Oklahoma State (OSU) football game back in October 2025.During the game, fan Trent Eaton reportedly accepted a $10 bet from his sister to enter the student section, remove his shirt and wave it over his head.A TikTok video of Eaton enthusiastically twirling his shirt while surrounded by an otherwise subdued crowd quickly went viral. As more fans joined in, the moment became the blueprint for what would later become known as the "Tarps Off" trend.Over the following months, similar displays appeared at college football games across the United States before making the jump to professional sports and the MLB.The movement gained renewed momentum in the spring of 2026 after fans at a Colorado Rockies game adopted the celebration, while the phrase "tarps off" itself also became increasingly common in sports clips shared online.Idk if I have ever seen so many shirtless guys cheering for the Rockies at the same time before (& the pile keeps growing..) pic.twitter.com/8d3lFIyjm3 Shannon (@LoveTheRox) April 8, 2026How Is The 'Tarps Off' Trend Used? The trend reached a new level of popularity in May 2026 when members of the Stephen F. Austin State University baseball team attended a St. Louis Cardinals game at Busch Stadium.Attempting to energize the crowd during a comeback, the players removed their shirts and spun them over their heads, helping spark an atmosphere that culminated in a Cardinals walk-off victory.Bad day to be a shirt!Oli invited the Tarp Crew down to meet the team! pic.twitter.com/7ZSIVLfLHQ St. Louis Cardinals (@Cardinals) May 16, 2026Videos of the celebration quickly spread across social media in May, prompting the Cardinals to embrace the movement by inviting the "Tarp Crew" to meet the team and later designating an official shirt-optional fan section in the stadium.Throughout the summer of 2026, the tradition spread to stadiums across Major League Baseball, with fans at games involving the Tampa Bay Rays, Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Houston Astros and other teams adopting the celebration.Tarps Off is sweeping the nation!Tonight the craze hits Tropicana Field pic.twitter.com/uRXMfjzC9Y MLB (@MLB) May 19, 2026The trend also inspired commentary videos, memes and parodies, including posts showing women participating, such as one shared under the "Women in Male-Dominated Fields" meme format, cementing "Tarps Off" as one of the summer's biggest sports trends. What Are Some Examples Of The 'Tarps Off' Trend? For the full history of the Tarps Off trend, be sure to check out Know Your Meme's encyclopedia entry for even more information.Read the original article on Know Your Meme.

Trans Lives Will ALWAYS Matter: Former Fever Veteran Brianna Turner Delivers Powerful Message After Sophie Cunninghams Remarks
Brianna Turner and Sophie Cunningham Imagn ImagesSophie Cunningham has once again caught the spotlight with her latest remarks on the inclusion of transgender women in womens sports. In an interview with ESPN, she said that she wanted to protect young girls in a locker room. And now, her fellow league player and former Indiana Fever veteran, Brianna Turner, has opened up about her thoughts on the matter.During a media session, basketball analyst Andrew Dukowitz talked to the president of the Minnesota Lynx, Cheryl Reeve, about her stance on transgender inclusion in the WNBA and other womens sports leagues. Reeve believed that the attacks on trans people have got way more aggressive.Resharing Reeves statement on X, Turner shared a lengthy thread, clarifying her stance on the issue. She wrote:Ive been an advocate for the trans community since I entered the WNBA. So many takes about them are based on fear mongering and bigotry. In further posts, the Las Vegas Aces forward stood in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and claimed that she was ready to take all the hate for supporting them.Turner summed up her thoughts in a heartfelt message at the end that read:To any trans kids or adults reading this I promise your life matters. I promise theres people in this country that want to see you reach old age and live your truth. You are worth it. Trans lives will ALWAYS matter.Even though Cunningham has stated that she wasnt associated with any political side of the country, her statement has given rise to several speculations among fans. Turner was also part of the same team as Cunningham last season and averaged her career-low numbers: 8.6 ppg, 1.1 rpg and 1.9 apg.Sophie Cunningham says its common sense, defending her earlier stanceWhile talking to the media about her statement on ESPN about transgender women, Sophie Cunningham believed that it was common sense. After the Fever defeated the Connecticut Sun, 123-88, before going into the All-Star break, Cunningham backed her earlier stance on the issue and said:I said what I said. I think its kind of common sense. When it comes just to protecting young girls in sport and women in sport, I feel very strongly about that. Thats why you have Title IX.Thats why you have some of the greats in womens sports. If Title IX womens sports werent protected, then you wouldnt hear about any type of women in sport. I have never once said that I hated the trans community.Cunningham did not have the best of days against the Sun, as she couldnt make any field goal. All of her eight points came from free throws.READ MORE: Missouri Senator Drops 2-Word Reaction as Sophie Cunningham Speaks Out on Biological Men in Female SportsShes a little kid WNBA Fans Cant Get Enough of Caitlin Clarks Hilarious Response to Stephanie Whites POTW AnnouncementCollege Sports Network has you covered with the latest news, analysis, insights, and trending stories in the NBA, college football, mens college basketball, womens college basketball, and college baseball!
