SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe dark side of Manchester Uniteds season-ticket fiascoMeet Ruairi. Hes a six-year-old Manchester United fan and is football bonkers. He lives five minutes from the ground and is already a regular in the Stretford End. He was a mascot for the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace earlier in the year; hes been on away days to Seville, Istanbul and Bilbao. This same six-year-old superfan is now under suspicion of ticket touting. Under a widespread club probe, his account has been deactivated pending a review. The future of his precious season-ticket is up in the air.Ruairi is not a ticket tout. Its scandalous, his mother Kate, a season-ticket holder for 19 years, told The Independent. You can put so much worry [on the situation]. We cant tell our son that hes not going to United. Its our life, its what we do. Its where I met my husband. Its what we do every weekend together as a family. Hes obsessed.Ruairi (left) with mum Kate (centre) and dad Gary (The Independent)His dad Gary added: If we told him he couldnt go to games, hed be devastated. Absolutely devastated. His is just one nightmare realised among reportedly thousands of loyal match-going supporters over the past few days. Racked with anxiety, fans who claim to have followed the club across the continent for decades say theyre at risk of having such a significant part of their weekly routine severed, for reasons that are anything but exclusive to touts.Ruairis situation in particular picked up serious traction amid a social media frenzy. Kates post drawing attention to his plight had been viewed by 1.9 million people at the time of writing. As fans abandoned any sort of tribalism, the response was unanimous: fury.United have not maliciously targeted a six-year-old - nobody is alleging that. Instead, its the methods for weeding out touts that are coming under significant scrutiny. The club believe supporters affected have only been contacted if there is a technical anomaly consistent with behaviour used by touts - but rather than investigate this further before causing immense panic and stress, United have been accused of a ban first and ask questions later process by supporter groups such as the Manchester United Supporters Trust (Must). What information did Manchester United ask from its members under review? An explanation for activity indicating that your account has been accessed or managed by a third party that also appears to access at least 6+ other Manchester United ticketing accounts, or why you have accessed or managed at least 6+ other accounts. A list of the devices you regularly use to access your account. Confirmation of whether your account is accessed from multiple locations and, if so, details of those locations. A brief explanation of how your account is normally accessed and managed. A copy of valid photographic identification for account verification purposes. This would not be stored on file following verification. A near-identical email, seen by The Independent, has been sent around to hundreds of fans by Man United, who say they have identified patterns linked to access to your ticketing account that we need to understand more clearly. The club then request a straightforward explanation for the activity identified. In Ruairis case, Kate claimed this anomaly stemmed from her logging into her sons account. Its one of 11 accounts of family and friends she has access to, many of whom share logins - for context, anyone who had given their login credentials to more than six different people were flagged by United. They all sit in the same singing section of the Stretford End, placed together by design to create atmosphere. This was detailed thoroughly in her appeal. But until that is reviewed, his account - like all others - has been restricted. Its not yet a sanction nor an outright ban, with United insisting they are not assuming any wrongdoing. That wont be how it feels on the first day of the Premier League season, though. We can't apply for Hull away, so whether you like to say the word ban or not, you've banned my six-year-old because he can't apply for Hull away now, Kate fumed, with the appeal process set to take at least a month. He's definitely missing that first away game of the season, as is my husband. The suspension means Ruairi will miss Man Uniteds first away game of the season at Hull (Getty)There is a feeling within Must that the current blanket action being taken is completely disproportionate. Effectively banning people and asking them to prove they shouldnt be banned offends against all natural justice, a spokesperson said.Must has confirmed to The Independent that it has been in daily private meetings with the club in an effort to de-escalate what was described by a spokesperson as a war on the hardcore fanbase. It is eager to work collaboratively to eradicate the common enemy of touting, which plagues the game and hits the overwhelming majority of regular fans the hardest. But it feels United, who insist there is no ticketing process that requires a supporter to access another persons account, must change their attitudes towards tackling the issue."We are trying to help them understand what is 'normal fan behaviour'," a spokesperson added. "Groups of fans do share logins for each other's ticketing accounts, and that is not evidence of touting."Must insist it is normal fan behaviour for families and friends to share logins for each others ticketing accounts, regardless of the clubs terms and conditions (Getty Images)Whether these efforts result in a club climb-down or not, the fiasco has resulted in another spike in distrust among Uniteds often underrepresented match-going support - because the money does not come from them.Under Uniteds new categorised ticketing system (different prices for different matches) introduced before last term, the price discrepancy between a season ticket and 19 individual Premier League home tickets sold to a general member has gone from being minimal to hundreds of pounds. If standard seats are converted into hospitality seating - as happened in the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand before last season, which moved around 500 season-ticket holders - potential profits go stratospheric. The club has made a small reduction to its season ticket allocation in recent years - from around 53,000 in 2019 to approximately 47,000 now, despite the 25-year waiting list - and there are fears the contingent will be chipped away at further.100 percent, they dont want us, Kate asserts. They dont want the working class fan, they dont want your standard season ticket holders and its a shame because until it happens, they wont realise just how much we are the life and soul of the club. Must adds that there has been a longstanding suspicion that the club want fewer season-ticket holders. Man United dont make their money from the season-ticket holder, hence fears theyre not wanted (Getty)Man United sources refuted these claims to The Independent, stressing that the process is not being undertaken to drive revenue nor reduce the number of season tickets. The club assures any season tickets cancelled will be re-issued to someone on the waiting list, or with a cup season ticket. And its important to note the Red Devils are far from the only club to be on the end of this criticism. Down the M62, similar sentiments surround fierce rivals Liverpool, whose Anfield Road Stand extension saw nearly two times the extra allocation go towards hospitality rather than season tickets. As United plunged into a conflict with their core support base, Liverpool announced that 1.2m had been seized from organised ticket touts following a joint investigation with Merseyside Police that led to 432 lifetime bans and 115 indefinite suspensions - 65 of which related to season-ticket holders. This was sold as a big win in the war with touting. Given whats going on at Old Trafford right now, you cant blame any scepticism.0 Comments 0 Shares 54 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBarcelona see La Masia talent as future Ballon d’Or contender after World Cup heroicsBarcelona see La Masia talent as future Ballon dOr contender after World Cup heroicsPau Cubarsis remarkable rise has convinced Barcelona that they are witnessing the emergence of a truly generational defender, with the club believing the teenager has everything needed to become a future Ballon dOr winner.According to MARCA, there is growing confidence within Barcelona that Cubarsi could eventually become only the fourth defender in football history to lift the prestigious individual award. It is a remarkable level of belief for a player who is still just 19 years old, but one that shows the impact he has made for both club and country. After establishing himself as an undisputed starter under Hansi Flick, Cubarsi has taken a giant step forward by helping Spain win the FIFA World Cup, where he started all eight matches, played every minute of the tournament and was deservedly named the competitions Best Young Player. At Barcelona, those achievements have only strengthened the conviction that the defenders ceiling remains extraordinarily high.Cubarsi continues to exceed expectationsBarcelona feel Pau Cubarsi could win the Ballon dOr. (Photo by Buda Mendes/Getty Images)Pau Cubarsis development has been one of the biggest success stories to emerge from La Masia in recent years.Despite fierce competition for places in both Barcelonas defence and the Spanish national team, the teenager has become a guaranteed starter through consistency, maturity and composure beyond his years. His performances at the World Cup further elevated his reputation on the global stage.Playing every minute of Spains victorious campaign, Cubarsi produced a series of commanding displays that earned widespread praise and ultimately secured him the Best Young Player award.Barcelona dream of historic Ballon dOr achievementAccording to the report, several figures within Barcelona believe the young centre-back has the potential to challenge for the Ballon dOr in the future, which is an extraordinary feat for a defender in the modern era.Pau Cubarsi played every minute of Spains World Cup-winning campaign. (Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images)Historically, the award has been dominated by forwards and midfielders, with defenders rarely receiving footballs most prestigious individual honour. So far, in the entire history of the award, only three defenders have ever won the Ballon dOr since its introduction in 1956.Franz Beckenbauer claimed the award twice, in 1972 and 1976, before Matthias Sammer followed in 1996.Fabio Cannavaro remains the most recent defender to win it after his unforgettable performances in 2006.If Cubarsi were to achieve the same feat, he would join one of the most exclusive groups in football history.0 Comments 0 Shares 87 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM35m midfielder to stay against the odds35m midfielder to stay against the odds IMAGO - Andoni Iraola Richard Hughes Liverpool Liverpool are facing contract uncertainty over several midfielders. Stefan Bajcetic and Harvey Elliott are two such players - out of contract in 2027 and no closer to signing new deals. Either or both could be sold in the current transfer period in order to avoid losing them on a free.In a similar boat is Curtis Jones. The 25-year-old is under contract only for another year. And if Liverpool dont manage to tie him down to a new contract - or else sell him - he will be departing on a free transfer next summer.Jones expected to join InterIt was initially expected that the England international would sign for Inter Milan. The Italian champions have been interested since January - when they had an initial attempt to sign the Scouser rejected. But Cristian Chivus side have been back to the negotiation table since the window opened. However Inter have barely moved from their original valuation of Jones - falling well short of the 35m or so that Liverpool require. The Milanese giants are playing a dangerous game - banking on Richard Hughes being desperate to sell towards the end of the transfer period.Inter moving on with other prioritiesLiverpool have so far stood firm and a report in la Gazzetta dello Sport now paints Jones as a lesser priority for the Serie A side.Instead of bringing forward new discussion for Jones - and actually meeting Liverpools target price - they are putting him to the bottom of the list. The Nerazzurris immediate focus is on securing a central defender and a right-winger, the report reads. The clubs hierarchy is actively working to provide manager Chivu with these two missing pieces. For now, the pursuit of Jones may have to wait.Jones could now stay and get new dealThis latest development offers Liverpool the chance to KEEP Jones around. He is currently with the squad in the United States on a preseason tour - and will be needed during the opening stages of the campaign as Alexis Mac Allister will still be on holiday.Jones therefore has a chance to stake a big claim under new head coach Andoni Iraola - and may even convince his employers to hand him a new deal.He last renewed back in 2022 - when he was a fringe player - and his current demands have yet to be matched by the club in talks. But if Inter continue to test the clubs patience - and with Jones needed at the outset of the Iraola regime - a pathway may open up for the Scouser in our team to stay put.0 Comments 0 Shares 64 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCan Eagles' Jalen Hurts silence critics, thrive in defining season?PHILADELPHIA Everywhere Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts turned this offseason, there were reports of his heavy hand in the offense last season that helped sabotage the 2025 season. Or there was A.J. Brown saying their relationship had changed.Or there were rankings where Hurts is barely in the top 20 among NFL QBs.Or how this could be a make a break season for Hurts as a way to explain why the Eagles haven't given him a contract extension, even though his current deal runs through the 2028 season.Through it all, it's easy to forget that Hurts has taken the Eagles to the playoffs in all five of his seasons as the full-time starter and has a winning percentage of .695. He has taken the Eagles to two Super Bowls, one in which he was the MVP and another in which he would've been the MVP if not for a last-second field goal to beat the Eagles.Buy Philadelphia Eagles ticketsBut the question shouldn't be why doesn't Jalen Hurts get the respect he deserves, as much as how he really might be facing a make-or-break season in which he is being asked, as he put it, "to onboard another new system and put everything together, lay the foundation."That makes Hurts No. 1 in our countdown of the Eagles' eight most intriguing players heading into training camp on July 28.That system installed by new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion features more under-center snaps than Hurts is used to, more play-action passes, and perhaps fewer opportunities to be a plus-one in the running game. That, of course, has made Hurts so dangerous, and also so polarizing. In other words, the Eagles could be relying more on Hurts' right arm than his legs this season. And they're doing this without Brown, who had at least 1,000 yards receiving in each of his four seasons in Philadelphia before his June trade to the New England Patriots. How well, and how quickly, Hurts can master Mannion's system Mannion is Hurts' seventh play-caller in his seven NFL seasons could go a long way toward determining the Eagles' success in 2026, and to some extent, Hurts' future. No pressure, right?"Ive had so many good experiences with Jalen Hurts as our quarterback and a leader of this football team," Sirianni said in June to a small group of reporters who cover the team on a daily basis. "I know that hes relentless in everything that he does. I just think that he can do so much because hell work his (butt) off at it. "Im always so impressed with Jalen in that a guy that has accomplished so much, done so many good things, played so much winning football, and just has this relentless approach to just continue to get better and continue to do things however to help his game and ultimately help his team."Comparing 2 NFL quarterbacksLet's play a game.Quarterback A went 11-6 last season, completed 58.1% of his passes with 30 total touchdowns (passing and running), seven interceptions, and a passer rating of 90.1.Quarterback B went 11-5 last season, completed 64.8% of his passes with 33 total touchdowns, six interceptions, and a passer rating of 98.5.In the playoffs, Quarterback A is 1-1 overall, completing 52% of his passes, with four TDs, five INTs and a rating of 65.9. Quarterback B is 6-4 overall, completing 65.6% of his passes, with 11 TDs, three INTs and a rating of 93.4.Yet Quarterback A was ranked No. 10 in ESPN's annual survey of NFL executives, coaches and scouts. Quarterback B was ranked 17th.Quarterback B is Hurts. Quarterback A is the Bears' Caleb Williams, who became all the rage last season with his wild scrambles and passes that helped turn the Bears into a playoff team, despite his low completion percentage.Other NFL QB rankings had Hurts in the 15-20 range. NBC Sports' Chris Simms had Hurts at No. 21, behind, among others, Houston's C.J. Stroud and the Colts' Daniel Jones.Justin Herbert, who was drafted No. 6 overall in 2020, 47 spots ahead of Hurts, has never won a playoff game. Yet he's consistently ranked in the top 10.MOST INTRIGUING COUNTDOWN: Tracking Eagles 8 most intriguing players for boom or bust 2026 seasonSIRIANNI'S SURVIVAL: How Nick Sirianni survives as Eagles coach. Think ChatGPT, Vic FangioWhat Jalen Hurts has to proveThe Eagles, of course, wouldn't be asking Hurts to change his style of play if they didn't think he could do it. That's because the Eagles have expectations for another Super Bowl run following a first-round playoff exit last season. In 2025, the Eagles were ranked 24th in yards per game and 19th in points scored per game.Right tackle Lane Johnson used the word "predictable" to describe the offense after a brutal loss to the Giants last Oct. 9. It didn't get much better late in the season in which the Eagles failed to score more than 21 points in eight of their final 10 games, including playoffs.Mannion's system, then, is based on the Sean McVay/Kyle Shanahan model of outside zone runs, play-action passes, and having the QB line up under center. All of which goes against what the Eagles have done in Hurts' five seasons as the full-time starter, where he would often line up in the shotgun, often with the choice to pass or run.Yet last season, Hurts ran less than he had in any of his previous seasons. His 421 yards rushing were nearly 200 yards lower than his previous low.The Eagles tried to adapt, even employing some of the McVay/Shanahan play-action passes at times, most successfully in a 28-22 win over the Vikings on Oct. 19, when Hurts had a perfect passer rating of 158.3."I think that with some of the schemes that well be introducing weve always run outside zone, weve always run gap-scheme situations but maybe its going to be a little bit more," Sirianni said. "And with that, your play-action game will have even more opportunities to really show there. And so, excited about that and how hell do there."What weve done with him play-action-wise, thats always been a strength of his, and looking forward to him doing more of it."What it means for Jalen Hurts' futureAs for the contract, Hurts, who turns 28 in August, is entering the third year of his five-year, $255 million extension. The salary cap hits are not outrageous for a quarterback $32 million this season, $42 million in 2027 and $47 million in 2028, according to overthecap.com. That means the Eagles don't have to make that decision now. But Hurts' 2028 salary is not guaranteed, and the cap hit balloons to $97 million in 2029, a void year. So certainly by next year, Hurts' contract will become an issue. If the Eagles do extend him, then the next contract will last into Hurts' mid-30s, cementing him as the franchise QB. In so doing, the Eagles can spread Hurts salary cap hit for 2029 well into the 2030s while still making Hurts among the highest-paid QBs in the NFL.But if Hurts and the Eagles struggle this season under Mannion's system, then the Eagles would have a decision to make about Hurts' long-term future. So when the ESPN report came out this past spring about Hurts having a heavy-hand in the offense, or resistant to some of the changes under previous offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, Hurts pushed back."Im always open to growth. Im always open to improving," he said. "I think a lot of it is whether we put our time on task. What are we exhausting? What are we repping? And so, Im looking forward to seeing how training camp goes, so we can just continue to build on the foundation that we began to lay (in the spring)."That work has already begun.Contact Martin Frank at mfrank@delawareonline.com.
