Scotland's Gunn concedes four in San Jose debut defeat
Angus Gunn (second right) joined San Jose Earthquakes after leaving Nottingham Forest [Getty Images]Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn suffered a nightmare debut for San Jose Earthquakes as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat at home to Orlando City in their first match following Major League Soccer's break for the World Cup.It was the 30-year-old's first game since his national side failed to qualify for the knockout stages following a 3-0 loss to Brazil in their final group game - and his first club game since coming on as a substitute in Nottingham Forest's 1-1 Premier League draw with Crystal Palace in February. But, in truth, Gunn could take little blame for any of the goals while also producing a couple of saves that prevented a more painful loss for Bruce Arena's hosts.Who has your Premiership club brought in & let go this summer?Socceroos star allegedly tests positive for cocaine after speedingItaly confirm Ancelotti approach before GuardiolaVisiting centre-half David Brekalo was left unmarked as he headed home Eduard Atuesta's free-kick with just seven minutes gone.Winger Ivan Angulo doubled City's lead in the 29th minute with a powerful low drive into the far corner from just outside the penalty box.France legend Antoine Griezmann marked his debut following the 35-year-old forward's move from Atletico Madrid by firing home from just inside the box three minutes after the break as Gunn was left exposed by a loss of possession.Paraguay midfielder Braian Ojeda completed the rout in the 73rd minute as his header squeezed between Gunn and the near post from another Atuesta set piece. At the other end, Gunn's opposite number, Canada's Maxime Crepeau, produced several fine saves, a couple denying Timo Werner a scoring debut for San Jose after the Germany striker's move from RB Leipzig.Despite the defeat, Gunn's side remain tied on points at the top of the Western Conference but second on goal difference behind Vancouver Whitecaps, who lost 4-3 away to Cincinnati but have a game in hand.San Jose are fourth in the overall table, with Nashville leading ahead of Argentina forward Lionel Messi's Inter Miami.Gunn's side next host LA Galaxy, who are ninth in the Eastern Conference, on Sunday.

Man Utd's Overy could be on the move
[Getty Images]Barring 15-year-old JJ Gabriel coming in for England Under-20 striker Ethan Wheatley, who has a minor calf problem, Manchester United's 25-man squad for their first two pre-season games in Helsinki and Trondheim has stayed the same. That surely means anyone from the academy who has a chance of breaking into Michael Carrick's senior squad consistently this season will come from that group. It means the academy players not involved including the likes of Gibraltar international James Scanlon, midfielder Jack Moorhouse, who spent the first half of last season at Leyton Orient, and Gabriele Biancheri, who was at Rotherham, will have to seriously consider their next moves.Australia full-back James Overy also falls into that group.Overy missed a lot of football with United last term after being picked for both the Under-20 World Cup and Under-23 Asian Cup.However, the Perth-born youngster did come on as a second-half substitute in the FA Youth Cup final defeat by Manchester City in May.He is coveted by plenty of A League sides, who are keen to sign Overy on loan, but there is also interest in the 18-year-old, who earned his first call-up to the senior Socceroos squad last season, in Europe.

'Authenticity' drove NBA's interest in Hinkle Fieldhouse for NBA Cup Final
When the NBA's calendar turned over on June 30, one of the first things the league made a point to do was announce the selection of Hinkle Fieldhouse as the first host of the NBA Cup Final outside of Las Vegas. The IndyStar contacted the NBA to get a better sense of the process by which the league arrived at the decision to choose Hinkle. The league responded by e-mail with answers to the Star's question's from NBA Executive Vice President and Head of Global Events Kelly Flatow. The Q&A follows. Question: I recall Commissioner (Adam) Silver suggesting college arenas as a possibility last year. What sparked his and the league's interest in making the change out of Las Vegas and what drove the league to look at college arenas?Answer: (The NBA referred to commissioner Adam Silver's quote from an interview in December, 2025.) Were talking with Amazon Prime about whether it makes sense to maybe go to some unique locations for the final game. They have suggested, for example, some storied college arenas so were just looking at other ways we can do this.Q: When was a decision made to move forward in moving the final out of Las Vegas?A: Throughout last season, the league, Amazon and key partners like Emirates have discussed ways to continue evolving and elevating the Emirates NBA Cup experience for our fans. As those discussions progressed, the idea of bringing the championship moments to historic venues like Hinkle Fieldhouse came to life. Hinkle Fieldhouse has a rich basketball history and iconic place in the sport.Q: When and how did communication with Butler begin to use Hinkle Fieldhouse? What's made them a good partner in this endeavor?A: We started having initial conversations with a number of universities after Emirates NBA Cup last year. Indianapolis is a proven destination for large scale events, and Butler University shares our vision of creating a distinctive experience for players, fans and viewers.Q: What ultimately made Hinkle the right choice for this move?A: Hinkle Fieldhouse offers a unique combination of history, authenticity and basketball tradition that makes it an ideal stage for the Emirates NBA Cup Championship.Q: Hinkle is obviously an older arena located in a spot in Indianapolis removed from downtown while T-Mobile Arena is in the Las Vegas strip area right next to casinos. What did the league need to see to know that Butler and Hinkle would be compatible with the logistics for hosting this event? What if anything will the school, arena and the league need to do to make this work that might have been more intuitive in Las Vegas with a newer and larger facility?A: Whenever we bring a major event to a venue, we go through a comprehensive evaluation process to ensure it can support all the operational, broadcast, team and fan requirements involved. Throughout those conversations, Butler, Hinkle Fieldhouse and the Indianapolis community demonstrated the capacity and clear commitment to partnering with us to deliver a first-class Emirates NBA Cup Championship experience.Q: What led to the decision to host the semifinals in home facilities?A: This decision was made for a few reasons, but largely to offer fans an opportunity to experience a marquee, high-stakes game in their team market.Building excitement this way will help create even more momentum heading into the championship game.Q: To what extent is this change permanent? Does the league plan to pick a different classic college venue each season?A: While its too soon to discuss potential future locations, the decision to bring the Emirates NBA Cup to Hinkle Fieldhouse is part of a multiyear vision to bring the Championship to distinctive stages that honor the sports history while connecting with audiences around the world. This article originally appeared on Indianapolis Star: 'Authenticity' drove NBA's interest in Hinkle Fieldhouse for NBA Cup Final

Sooryavanshi 18-ball fifty tops tremendous India T20 win against Zimbabwe
India wonderkid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scored a maiden Twenty20 international half-century in a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in Harare.Put in to bat after losing the toss on Thursday in the first of three matches, Zimbabwe made a meagre 125-7 in 20 overs with all-rounder Wessly Madhevere (39) top-scoring.Led by 15-year-old prodigy Sooryavanshi, who struck four sixes and four fours in an 18-ball 50, India cruised to 126-3 with 40 balls to spare.Sooryavanshi became the youngest cricketer to represent India by debuting in a 4-0 T20I drubbing by England this month. He scored 42 runs in three innings. After his whirlwind 50 in Harare, Sooryavanshi was out when he got a thick outside edge to a Richard Ngarava delivery and was caught at deep third man by Ben Curran. He departed with the tourists 68-2. Then, wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan (35) and unbeaten captain Shreyas Iyer (28 not out) ensured India ended a dismal recent T20I run. Before four losses in England, one by an Indian record 125 runs, the reigning T20I world champions lost another series 2-0 in Ireland.Victory at Harare Sports Club was a welcome relief for Iyer it ended a seven-match winless run since he inherited the captaincy.I think the boys were tremendous. Could not have been happier with my first win, the skipper told reporters. There was bounce from a good length and it was also variable. I felt it was there in both innings. We are going to play two more matches here, so this performance gives everyone some confidence.Madhevere was run out after a 58-run sixth-wicket stand with Tadiwanashe Marumani (27 not out). An unwise attempt to secure a second run led to his downfall.

    What's next for Diego Pavia?
After failing to win a chance at training camp to secure a spot as one of Lamar Jackson's backups, former Ravens quarterback Diego Pavia has entered the NFL's waiver system. If unclaimed, what's next?He could choose to wait for another NFL opportunity. Injuries could open a door for Pavia to participate in a training camp as an extra arm, which would in turn give him an opportunity to earn a 53-man roster spot or a position on a practice squad. If there's no NFL interest, Pavia could go to the CFL. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers hold his negotiating rights, and they've made it clear that they are interested. The UFL apparently has interest, too if the social-media team has its finger on the pulse of the league's priorities. The league retweeted the announcement of Pavia's waiver by the Ravens with the eyes emoji. Then there's college football. While he doesn't fit within the NCAAs new eligibility rule (he turned 20 the year before his four-year college career began), Pavia could try to sue for another season. He played two years of junior-college football before commencing a four-season NCAA career in four years. With every NCAA rule currently subject to an antitrust challenge, Pavia could give it a shot. Of course, the fact that he signed a contract with the Ravens would make it harder. But he didn't get a signing bonus or a game check; at most, he received the standard per diem for his offseason work.It doesn't hurt to try, and it wouldn't be ridiculously expensive (in theory) to hire a lawyer to file the paperwork and roll the dice.Surely, someone would be interested. Pavia finished second in the 2025 Heisman Trophy voting. It's a path to getting more game experience and to getting paid more than he'd receive in the CFL or the UFL.
