26 Florida high school football teams to watch in 2026
The 2026 high school football season is here, and it's shaping up to be big.The Florida High School Athletic Association's new Open Division certainly throws a new wrinkle into a season that already has new classes and new rivalries.Beyond that, there are a lot of questions that will be answered over the new few months. How will Raines and Lake Mary look in 2026? Both teams had dramatic state championship wins last season, but they graduated a lot of talent from the 2025 rosters. Carol City added a lot of talent after hiring Toro Wallace as coach, but will it all come together on the field the way some national polls expect?Several schools brough in proven winners as their new coaches, but how quickly will they be able to put their fingerprints on their new programs? With that in mind, here are 26 teams to watch for the 2026 season.ArmwoodThe Hawks arguably were the most dominant team in the state for 13 weeks last season before falling to eventual Class 6A champion West Boca 14-13 on a last-minute touchdown in the state semifinal. Armwood, which outscored opponents 590-72 in 2025, returns key defensive standouts Theo Wilson (North Carolina) and Errol Demontagnac (Nebraska).Baker CountyCoach Jamie Rodgers is back at his alma mater after a successful run at rival Braford, including a state title run in 2023. He inherits a team that won four games in 2025 and has two-way impact player Hudson Hodges back on the roster.Cardinal NewmanThe Crusaders won their first state title in 2025, ending national power Chaminade-Madonnas four-year reign. Cardinal Newman isnt making it easy on itself with a schedule that includes three defending state champions as well as Chaminade, which now is a district opponent.Carol CityExpectations are sky high for the Chiefs. New coach Toro Wallace, the former offensive coordinator at Chaminade-Madonna, has a roster that includes five-star receiver Nick Lennear (Miami), four-star athlete ZaKari Johnson (Florida State) and four-star edge rusher Aden Johnson. They enter the season ranked No. 20 in the USA TODAY National preseason Super 25.Carrollwood DayThe Patriots finally beat rival Clearwater Central Catholic in the playoffs, snapping a three-year skid, and advanced to the Class 1A state semifinals last season. They return a lot of key starters from their 2025 core, including quarterback Myles McDonald, running back Kameron Battle and athlete Brooklyn Maxey (Kansas State), along with some of the top players in the class of 2028.Chaminade-MadonnaThe Lions four-year stranglehold on the state championship trophy ended last December, but dont expect Chaminade to suddenly fall off. This remains a talented team with an potent offense led by new quarterback Brady Quinn and an elite receiving group.ColumbusThe Explorers had a down year in 2025, winning just four games, but are posed to rebound this fall. Junior five-star athlete Amir Sears is one of the best players in the nation, and senior quarterback Kai Moore (Northern Illinois) could have a big season.DillardThe Panthers are coming off an undefeated regular season and regional semifinal appearance in 2025 and have the talent to make a deeper playoff run this year. Wide receiver Anthony Jennings (Florida) has legitimate track speed and the secondary is ied bySemajay Robinson (Virginia).DunbarDon't sleep on the Tigers, who have have an underrated receiving core. Andre Moss, Tihiem Hutchins and Jax State commit Fred Jackson will face a lot of Division I DBs this season, and have already shown they can compete with the best at team camps this offseason. Expect Dunbar to put a lot of points on the board this year.EvansThe Trojans won eight games in 2025, including wins against Central Florida powers Jones (Class 4A state runner-up) and Lake Mary (Class 8A state champion). Evans returns several impact defensive players and added senior quarterback William Jackson (Maryland) during the offseason.JonesJones fell in the Class 4A championship last year and lost a lot of key pieces, but have an argument for best defensive front in the state this year. Texas A&M commit Fred Ards (No. 28), West Virginia commit DaJour Webb (No. 80), and UCF commit Noah Robinson make up a formidable defensive line that will take on some high-level offenses.Lake MaryAfter one of the most stunning state championship game finishes ever, Lake Mary will look very different in 2026. Four-year starting quarterback Noah Grubbs is now at Notre Dame, and most of the offensive producers from 2025 also graduated. The good news is coach Scott Peterson and his staff have a proven track record and will have the Rams ready this fall.Lakeland ChristianThe Vikings offense has multiple Division I commits, including quarterback Brody Brenneman (USF), running back AJ Truedell (Delaware) and offensive lineman Ty MontsDeOca (UCF). Lakeland Christian won eight games in 2025, with two of the losses coming by a total of five points.McArthurThe Mustangs had a big 2025 season under first-year coach Robert Ortega, winning 10 games and reaching the Class 5A regional finals. They have the talent for another deep playoff run, including one of the most talented secondaries in the state.Melbourne Central CatholicThe Hustlers made a big splash in February, hiring three-time state champion Ryan Schneider to lead the program. MCC has talent, including athlete Tank White (Syracuse) and receivers Noah Flores (Harvard) and Grady Bonenberger. Dont be surprised if this team makes a postseason run.Merritt IslandThe Mustangs, led by quarterback Kevin Verpaele (USF) and tight end DeShaun Thomas (Pitt) won seven games last season and suffered close losses to state powers Cocoa and DeLand. The biggest challenge to a length postseason run likely will be district rival Eau Gallie, which beat Merritt Island twice in 2025. Miami Central The Rockets fell to Miami Northwestern in the Class 3A-Region 4 finals last year, and enter the 2026 season with all the tools to make their standard run at a state title. The secondary is loaded, led by Missouri commit T'ari Miller (No. 69) and Illinois commit Trezavant Boyd. Pitt commit QB James Perrone (No. 100) transfers in after a dominant season at Southridge. Port CharlotteThe Pirates were a Class 4A state semifinalist in 2025 and return one of the states best quarterback-wide receiver combinations. Dual threat quarterback Logan Flaherty (Florida State) and four-star receiver Elias Pearl (Florida) lead a Port Charlotte squad that averaged more than 37 points per game last season.RainesWhat will coach Donovan Masline and the Vikings do for an encore after last years stunning come-from-behind win over Miami Northwestern in the Class 3A state championship? Raines graduated a lot of production on both sides of the ball from last years team, but its a good idea not to underestimate Raines.St. Thomas AquinasAquinas is a national power that won a share of the 2025 national championship. So why watch them this season? Because this could be as good a team as the Raiders have had during their current streak of seven consecutive state titles. A second consecutive national title is a real possibility. The Raiders are the No. 7 team in the USA TODAY National preseason Super 25. SantalucesSantaluces has a lot of premier talent, including edge rusher Jayvan Dawson (Miami commit) and running back Kelsey Gerald (Kentucky). But the team will be without head coach Henry Clavijo, who was suspended for a year for an NIL violation. Samuel Putmon is the interim coach.Tampa JesuitThe Tigers have a lot of question marks this season, but one group they can be sure of is the linebackers. Texas A&M commit Kaden Henderson (No. 4) and Duke commit Tripp Keller (No. 65) were extremely productive in their junior campaigns, and return as versatile and polished as any at their position. Incoming freshman Jack Griffin, the younger brother of Florida quarterback Will Griffin, arrives to take the reins of the offense after starting as an eighth-grader at Northside Christian. The First AcademyThe Royals two-year postseason ban is officially over (for real this time). This is a program that believes it has had the talent to compete for state titles the last two years. Now, theyll get the chance to prove it.True North ClassicalAfter starting 0-2 last season, the Titans reeled off 10 consecutive wins and reached the regional championship game. With experienced quarterback Zah Katz (FIU) and a talented secondary, Ture North could be poised for a deep postseason run. Union CountyIts not often a team is able to hire a Hall of Fame coach, but thats exactly what the Yellowjackets did by bringing back seven-time state champion Robby Pruitt. The 400-game winner previously led Union County from 1993-99, winning 79 games and three state titles.Vero BeachIn one dramatic play, Vero Beachs dream 2025 season turned into a nightmare. How will the team, led by senior quarterback Champ Monds (Notre Dame), respond after losing to Lake Mary on a Hail Mary in the Class 8A state title game? This article originally appeared on Palm Beach Post: 26 Florida high school football teams to watch in 2026

Eric Stonestreet reacts to the disappointing 2025 Chiefs season
This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with Emmy Award-winning actor and lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan Eric Stonestreet. In his interview with Easton Jr., Stonestreet, who stars in the new Coors Light campaign 'Mahomeses' alongside Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, reacted to the disappointing 2025 Chiefs season."Well, I, like everybody else, just switched to next season. I just moved on; this season is a no-go, and so now everything we do from here on out is going to be about next season, which means draft choices, which means preserving and making sure we're healthy moving into next season, which was unfortunate with Patrick getting hurt when he did," said Stonestreet. "I just moved on. That's what you learn in football. It's the game of life. You have a bad play, you've got to move on. You have a bad game; you've got to move on. You have a bad season; you've got to move on."The Chiefs finished the 2025 season with a 6-11 record, failing to make the playoffs or win the AFC West for the first time in a decade. Stonestreet elaborated on his view of the season, emphasizing dedicated support for the players and coaching staff."That's the principles of football, and this is the principles of what football teaches you in life as well. I try to keep my fandom just behind that of Andy Reid, that of Patrick Mahomes, and that of Chris Jones because I'm not out there sweating, I'm not out there bleeding, I'm not," said Stonestreet. "I haven't been in the weight room since I was 18." I didn't play college ball and go through the trials and tribulations of getting drafted and all that. I try to keep my anger, my disappointment, my happiness, and my excitement behind the people who actually contributed to the winning, and also feel that they contributed to the losing. I don't want to pile on; I want to be a fan and know they're out there trying their best, and they want to win more than anybody else."For more information, check out the Coors Light website. This article originally appeared on Chiefs Wire: Eric Stonestreet reacts to the disappointing 2025 Chiefs season

Colts' second year defender player to watch once training camp begins
With training camp for theIndianapolis Coltsgetting closer, which players should be on our radars as these practices and preseason games unfold? As part of our training camp preview, we'll be highlighting one player from each position group to keep your eyes on. In some instances, it may be one of theColts' top players that we'll be watching closely, or it could be a player fighting for playing time or a roster spot.Up next is the defensive end position.Colts defensive end to watch during training camp: Jaylahn TuimoloauThe starting spot opposite of Laiatu Latu is up for grabs, and competing for those snaps will be Tuimoloau and Arden Key.A second-round pick by the Colts in the 2025 NFL draft, Tuimoloau's role as a rookie was relatively small. He played just 215 total defensive snaps the entire season, according to PFF.The experience gained last season, along with having a full offseason to work on his craft while continuing to immerse himself in Lou Anarumo's defense, can all provide Tuimoloau with a jumping-off point, however, as he heads into Year 2."He's a long athlete," said defensive line coach Marion Hobby, via Locked on Colts. "He's got quickness, but he's got all the natural ability that you want. Just seeing him fine-tune his game is the key to the drills. He's got to feel comfortable playing, and that's probably the thing from last year, I saw him, he didn't look very comfortable sometimes. But him getting comfortable playing, but long, got good weight."Having a more consistent pass rush presence around Latu this season is a must. As a collective unit in 2025, the Colts ranked 30th in ESPN's pass rush win rate metric.Key has produced at a steady level during his career, but hasn't had the high-end production and has often filled a rotational role. Tuimoloau has the higher ceiling, but whether or not that potential is recognized remains to be seen. This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: Colts' second year defender player to watch once training camp begins

Blue Jays Veteran Sends 4-Word Bo Bichette Message After Mets Trade Report
TORONTO, ON - OCTOBER 23: Bo Bichette #11 of the Toronto Blue Jays speaks to the media during World Series Workout Day at Rogers Centre on October 23, 2025 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Vaughn Ridley/Getty Images)Getty ImagesWhen the Toronto Blue Jays allowed Bo Bichette to leave in free agency, they envisioned a new era built around Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and a reshaped roster that would again contend for the World Series this season. Instead, the 2026 season has been defined by inconsistency, while Bichette's future with the New York Mets is suddenly becoming one of baseball's most intriguing trade deadline storylines. And with the Mets sliding out of contention and Toronto searching for answers, speculation has quickly shifted toward whether a reunion could make sense for both sides.FORBES | By Peter ChawagaESPN Icon Blindsided By Bloodbath, No Idea Phillies, Dodgers Would Be Final GameNew York Mets Bo Bichette Appears Open To Trade With Toronto Blue Jays A Reunion FitOne of the most prominent voices surrounding the team has proposed a deadline trade that would reunite the Blue Jays with their former franchise shortstop as both sides appear to be in need of a bold change. The New York Mets are in full sell-off mode, sitting at 43-60 and facing a double-digit deficit in the National League wild-card race, Mike Wilner wrote for the Toronto Star. That gives the Jays an opportunity to fix a big mistake they made over the winter. Its time to bring back Bo Bichette. And Wilners suggestion came shortly after Bichette acknowledged that he could find himself shipped out of Queens as the Mets disappoint. As someone with no-trade protection in his contract, Bo Bichette controls whether he will remain with the Mets beyond Aug. 3, Mike Puma reported for the New York Post. Bichette has indicated hes in no hurry to leave. And yet, the third baseman stopped short of saying he would block any trade proposal that involves him.FORBES | By Peter ChawagaDodgers Superstar Regrets Trump White House Decision After Political BacklashToronto Blue Jays Veteran Kevin Gausman Sends Bo Bichette Message As Trade Deadline LoomsBichette's first season in New York has not unfolded as expected. After signing a three-year, $126 million contract with the Mets over the winter, the 28-year-old has struggled to produce at his previous All-Star level, batting .256 with a .677 OPS, 10 home runs and 15 doubles through the club's disappointing campaign.Whether that opens the door to a Toronto reunion remains uncertain. The Blue Jays would have to decide if reacquiring Bichette is worth the financial commitment and prospect cost, while Bichette would have the final say. But one of Bichettes former teammates made it clear that the roster would be open to a reunion if the front office does decide to pursue the wild idea.We definitely miss him, Kevin Gausman told Wilner. Im sure (Vladimir Guerrero Jr.) misses him, you know. That guy was one of his best friends for his first seven, eight years in the big leagues. (They) shared a lot of great moments together. The brief but pointed comment highlights Bichette's enduring standing among his former teammates, even after his departure in free agency. While Toronto's front office chose to move in a different direction last winter, perhaps they could have a change of heart if the price to reunite with Bichette is reasonable. This article was originally published on Forbes.com
