The surprising NASCAR connection hidden in a RI shopping plaza
CUMBERLAND What is now a shopping plaza that includes a Stop & Shop and a McDonald's holds a noted place in American auto racing history: It is the site of the first sanctioned stock car race in the United States outside the South. Not only would the first stock car races in the North be held in Cumberland, but the national championship would be decided there. On Oct. 26, 1947, Fonty Flock, of Atlanta, won the national championship race on the one-third-mile, high-banked, paved oval track of the Lonsdale Sports Arena off Mendon Road on the bank of the Blackstone River, just downstream from Pratt Dam.A crowd of 18,000 watched the seven races that Sunday afternoon, part of a program sanctioned by National Stock Car Circuit head Bill France, who, a couple of months later, would become head of the newly formed NASCAR, the governing body of stock car auto racing.Only days before the history-making auto races, Lonsdale Sports Arena made history in another sport: The bowl-shaped arena hosted 32,000 spectators in what was the largest football crowd ever in Rhode Island at that time, as Cranston High School beat La Salle Academy, 20-2. The huge crowd snarled traffic for hours in the area.Edward A. McNulty, a Pawtucket contractor, bought the site in 1934 and used it to mine sand and gravel for his road-building business. In 1947, he built the track to host midget-car races. Two years later, McNulty won Lincoln Town Council approval to open a drive-in movie theater in Lonsdale, just across the Blackstone River from his race track. While the late 1940s were the heyday for the race track, it was doomed to a life of less than a decade. Being so close to the Blackstone River meant the track was prone to flooding. It closed in 1956.And, although Bill France sanctioned the first stock car races at Lonsdale months before founding NASCAR, no record could be found of a NASCAR-sanctioned race ever being held there. This story first published July 16, 2025.This article originally appeared on The Providence Journal: The surprising NASCAR connection hidden in a RI shopping plaza

While probably not needed, Bradley Barcola is Bayern Munichs contingency plan if Michael Olise eventually leaves
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA - JULY 18: Bradley Barcola #12 of France reacts after the 4-6 loss during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Bronze Final between France and England at Miami Stadium on July 18, 2026 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Sarah Stier - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty ImagesAccording to a report from Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk, Michael Olise is not leaving Bayern Munich this summer which tracks with much the recent reporting on the matter. If, however, transfer armageddon happens and Olise goes nuclear to force his way out of Bavaria (an extremely unlikely nut not impossible scenario), Bayern Munich would make a beeline to pursue Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola: It is TRUE: Bradley Barcola is one of the names on the shortlist at Bayern Munich if they have to replace Michael Olise. I reported last summer that there was an idea to sign the France international anyway. Even the summer before, the 23-year-old was considered a very interesting player for FC Bayern. Hes on the shortlist, but at the moment there is no chance of getting this player for the club. Thats because PSG want to give the winger a new contract, and amounts in the region of 150m have been floated if the Ligue 1 champions were to sell the player. However, when you look at the situation and, as we say, Bayern dont want to sell Olise this summer the club has to think about the Frenchmans situation if he doesnt sign a contract with Bayern. When you look at Bradley Barcolas contract, you see hes got a year less left on his terms compared to his international teammate (running out in 2028). So, if he isnt sold this summer to Liverpool, who are clearly interested, or to another club that can afford the asking price, and hes still on the market and assuming that Bayern are forced to sell Michael Olise with one year left on his contract next summer, then PSG have a decision to make. I personally think hes a player who would fit in perfectly at Bayern Munich. Thats also partly due to his affordable salary demands (currently earning 7m-8m gross in Paris, which is half of what Olise earns at Bayern). So, hes one to keep an eye out for as a potential replacement in case Michael Olise leaves.Barcola is highly coveted by Liverpool and could pursue that destination in the coming weeks. There is a significant chance that if PSG thinks it should cash out on Barcola, it will look to sell him this summer. In that case, Liverpool would have a clear advantage over Bayern Munich as it will likely have a better chance to work out a deal before any type of aggressive move by Olise which, again, is not likely to happen. With the teams current depth in the attack, only a major sale would enable the club to pursue Barcola. Its like a punch me moment. I dont know what to say about this. I mean, the fact that Wrexham is coming to America, on their third trip, last of which being in in 2024, but were not only coming to America to play again, in what has always been the most exhilarating and exciting thing to see live, but to do it with three Premier League teams in a row, in Tampa, New York, and Philly, is pretty amazing. You know? To have to play to host Liverpool FC in Yankee Stadium with, that that kind of history and pedigree,I just dont know what to make of it. I mean, we cannot wait to fill that stadium and, and watch the watch the boys out there just do what they do best. I mean, its always so electric. Sepang Set for a Comeback? Malaysian PM to Announce F1 Return Decision Soon
The 2026 Formula 1 calendar has been in a state of flux since the Middle East conflict forced the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix earlier this year. Now, the scramble to fill the void is reaching a climax, and a fan-favorite circuit is on the verge of an unexpected return.According to a recent update from F1 Speed Indonesia, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has officially addressed the rumors surrounding the Sepang International Circuit. Responding to press inquiries regarding F1s request to have Malaysia replace the canceled Bahrain GP, Ibrahim confirmed that a definitive answer is imminent.Regarding F1, we will make an announcement on Sunday, the Prime Minister stated, setting a July 26 deadline for the decision. This aligns with recent confirmations from Malaysias Youth and Sports Ministry, which has been actively assessing the feasibility, costs, and logistics of hosting a Grand Prix at short notice.F1s Calendar ScrambleThe aggressive push for Malaysia comes after F1s initial contingency plans fell apart. Organizers had originally hoped to reschedule the Bahrain GP for early Octoberslotting it right between the Azerbaijan and Singapore races. However, with geopolitical tensions flaring up once again, the FIA and F1 management have been forced to abandon the Middle East makeup dates entirely.According to a breaking report highlighted by @Nachez98, F1 is VERY CLOSE to giving Sepang the green light to take over that post-Baku slot on the calendar. If the Malaysian government approves the bid on Sunday, it will mark Sepangs first Formula 1 race since it was dropped due to rising hosting fees in 2017. However, if the financial logistics of the deal fall through, F1 still has European backup plans. The same report notes that Imola has joined Portimao and Turkey on the shortlist of candidate circuits ready to step in and help close out the highly disrupted 2026 season.
