San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week in which he suffered several injuries, none of which are life-threatening, the team announced on Saturday.Shanahan sustained a broken nose, three broken ribs and a broken hand. Lucas Herbert will take a four-shot advantage over Bryson DeChambeau entering this weekend at LIV Golf United Kingdom Presented by JCB. The next closest pursuer is Tyrrell Hatton, but hes seven shots behind. Herbert, who went wire-to-wire in Virginia two months ago to claim his first LIV Golf title, hopes he and DeChambeau can continue to separate from the field, leaving them to go toe-to-toe in Sundays final round. Only one other scenario would please the Ripper GC star more. "Would love to make it a two-horse race with Bryson on Sunday," Herbert said. "Or maybe a one-horse race if I can." The way Herbert is playing now, no one doubts he could run away from the pack. The 30-year-old Australian followed his course-record 11-under 61 in Thursdays opening round with a 6-under 66, fueled by an impressive back-nine response after DeChambeau overtook him for the lead midway Friday at JCB Golf & Country Club. At 17 under, Herbert has the tournament in his hands; as a proven front-runner, hell be difficult to reign in. Even so, he remains cautious about his chances with 36 holes to play. "Ive seen this happen before where it feels like theres only two of us in the tournament and everyone kind of gets caught up in that story and other guys come back in," said Herbert. "I can think of Anthony Kim winning in Adelaide earlier this year when everyone thought it was the Bryson and Jon [Rahm] show there on Sunday. Were only halfway. We have a lot of golf to go." DeChambeau, at 13 under after his 5-under 67, knows the challenge will be difficult, especially given Herberts current form. Last week, Herbert was the 36-hole leader at The Open Championship after tying a mens major record with his second-round 62. He eventually finished T6, the best finish of his major career. Asked what it will take to catch Herbert, DeChambeau replied with a laugh: "Just shoot 10-under-par both days. Thats what it feels like Ive got to do. Him being four ahead, its not going to be an easy task. Its going to be a great battle, no matter what. I hope I can give him a battle." DeChambeau can at least draw on the first half of Fridays round when he made up a three-stroke deficit to take the lead. DeChambeau was a bogey-free 5 under through 10 holes, while Herberts putter went cold, as he missed three par putts, each within 3 feet or less. When DeChambeau birdied the par-5 10th while Herbert scrambled for par, the Crushers captain led by one. But the 9-foot par-saving putt by Herbert on that hole was a positive sign. He then birdied the par-4 12th after driving the green, eagled the par-5 13th with a 33-foot putt, and made a 10-foot birdie putt at the party-hole 14th to re-establish his multi-shot lead. He added another late birdie at the par-3 17th. "It was not my best stuff out there," Herbert said, "but that back nine, kind of hung around long enough to see my chance to take the lead again come to fruition." DeChambeau, meanwhile, played the final eight holes in even par, negating two birdies with two bogeys. Thats left him with plenty of work as he seeks his third individual win of the season while also hoping to make up ground against points leader Rahm in the season-long Individual Championship race. "Ive got to focus on playing some really good golf, not making too many mistakes out there," he said. "I made too many on the back nine today." He cant afford too many more this weekend. Meanwhile, Herbert is glad to be in the final group with DeChambeau for the second consecutive round. "I actually really enjoy it," Herbert said. "I'm glad I'm playing with him again tomorrow. He's had some great support out there. There's a lot of fans out there watching our group, which was pretty awesome. It's a privilege to have him out here because he's bringing a lot of eyeballs and a lot of fans, which we love doing around the world." " I dont know what hes got planned tonight, some sort of knockout round-robin extravaganza. Im sure that will entertain us and get our mind off the golf." Herbert said those kinds of fun activities are beneficial, especially in his position with the lead. Without LIV Golfs team concept, hed have to deal with the pressure by himself. "One of the funnest things about the team golf aspect," he said. "I think our team is one of the best. We have some of the best camaraderie with those sorts of things. Yeah, I feel pretty fortunate to be included in that." DECHAMBEAU MAKING UP GROUND: Bryson DeChambeau still has plenty of points to make up in order to apply some heat on Jon Rahm, who currently leads the season-long points race as he chases a third consecutive Individual Championship. But with DeChambeau in solo second at 13 under while Rahm is tied for 31st at 1 under, DeChambeau can at least prevent Rahm from clinching the title this week. "Im sure hes going to be a force to be reckoned with the next couple of days and in New Jersey as well [in Bedminster at LIV Golf New York, the leagues next tournament]," said DeChambeau. Rahm and DeChambeau each have two wins this season, but Rahms consistency has provided a healthy advantage. Even if DeChambeau fails to catch him, a second-place result in the final standings would be his best finish in the season-long race. "Feel like Ive had my best year out here this year," DeChambeau said. "For whatever reason, I feel like Ive left a lot out there, which is quite interesting to me but very grateful for having a great year out here. I feel really comfortable with my game, as comfortable as Ive felt in a long time." HATTONS BIRDIE WALK: For the second consecutive round, Tyrrell Hatton birdied the par-3 ninth. On Thursday, it was with a 10-foot putt. On Friday, it was from 5 feet and he walked it in. Accidentally, that is. "I thought Id missed it right," he said. "Ive been struggling with left-to-right putts this week. Feels like the balls just slipping off the face, so Im not really hitting the line I want to. Bit surprised to see that one go in." Two years ago, Hatton tied for second at JCB behind his Legion XIII captain Rahm. He enters this weekend solo third at 10 under, seven shots behind Herbert. Hes looking for his second consecutive LIV Golf title (and third overall), having won last month in Andalucia. "You can see how good the scorings been the first two days," said Hatton, who shot a 4-under 68 on Friday. "Its meant to be a little bit windier tomorrow, but I still imagine the scoring is going to be pretty good. Hopefully, I can play well and give myself opportunities." CASEY RETURNS WITH BIG DRIVES: DeChambeaus Crushers GC teammate Paul Casey returned to action this week after missing the previous two tournaments with an injury. YORKTOWN Hannah Rapp had so much life in front of her.Rapp, a Yorktown native and former Purdue track athlete, was making waves as a rising star in the boxing world. She had a job that she loved as an environmental health and safety specialist at Texas A&M University, and her boyfriend, Dr. Will Pollalis, had plans to propose to her for her upcoming 27th birthday.Instead, Rapp's life was cut short in an apparent road rage incident in Brazos County, Texas, when 31-year-old Charles Medina reversed his car into her while she and Pollalis were cycling, according to the sheriff's office. Rapp died on Saturday, July 18, at the age of 26, leaving behind grieving communities in Yorktown, West Lafayette and College Station, as well as the worldwide boxing community.In the days since her death, tributes to "Hanarchy" poured in on social media. On Wednesday, July 22, three candlelight vigils were held concurrently in each of her three homes to pay tribute to Rapp. As her family grieves her untimely loss and begins their fight for justice, the outpouring of love for Rapp has helped them persevere."It's been overwhelming," said Angie Crow Grimes, Hannah's mother, in a phone interview with The Star Press. "People in her hometown of Yorktown, people in her second home at Purdue, her third home here in College Station and beyond. Hannah has touched lives all over this state, all over Texas and all over the world with her basic kindness, compassion and love for others."'Once a Tiger, always a Tiger'Long before she stepped into a boxing ring, Rapp was a star athlete in her hometown of Yorktown, participating in basketball, cross country, soccer and track and field during her years as a Tiger. On the soccer field, she scored 53 goals and assisted on 30 more during her four varsity seasons and helped the team win three consecutive sectional championships from 2015-17.Her biggest accomplishments, though, came on the track. Rapp excelled in the 300-meter hurdles, where she was a two-time IHSAA state podium finisher and set three school records. Yorktown track coach Jared Turner recognized her talents early on and wrote her a letter when she was in eighth grade, telling her that he believed in her and hoped that she would give track a chance.Today, Turner remembers Rapp as one of the most special athletes he ever coached."I think it's a lot of what people have talked about all week on social media and news outlets," Turner said. "It's her spirit. She was a force of light and positivity. What stuck out to me was, even when she was going through very hard times in her life, whether it was injuries in sports or going through residential care for an eating disorder, she always found the positive. I think that's what drew a lot of people to her."Turner eulogized Rapp to a crowd of more than 100 people at Wednesday's candlelight vigil in Yorktown, asking that they carry her values of work ethic, positivity and authenticity as a way to honor her life. Family friend Angie Cravens also shared some words from the Rapp family."Hannah loved this small town where she grew up, Cravens read. The streets, the schools, this park helped shape the incredible person she became. Yorktown isn't just the place she was from; its a part of who she was. Once a Tiger, always a Tiger."Finding herself in the ringRapp's accomplishments at Yorktown earned her a track scholarship at Purdue, where she competed for four years and also became an active member of the Purdue Ultimate Frisbee club. She graduated in 2022 with a degree in environmental and ecological engineering and a minor in political science.During her time in West Lafayette, Rapp discovered the passion that would eventually make her a global star. She began training with Triumph Boxing in Indianapolis but eventually switched to Dark Side Boxing in Brookston to stay closer to Lafayette. Dark Side Boxing owner and coach Connor Mitton still remembers the first time he saw her fight."I first saw Hannah when she competed at Indiana Golden Gloves," Mitton said. "I had no idea who she was or anything like that, and I just remember seeing her in the ring for the first time like, 'Wow, this girl is amazing.'"Rapp was still with Triumph at the time, and it's an unwritten rule in boxing for coaches to poach boxers from others, so Mitton connected with her on social media and left it at that. However, when Rapp was seeking a trainer closer to Lafayette, she reached out to Mitton and became a mainstay at his gym."Watching the growth process was just unbelievable," Mitton said. "She was a natural athlete, and seeing her fight at Golden Gloves, I knew she was great. She came to the gym, and we put her through the wringer. Even then, she was miles ahead of the competition, and that's how I knew she was going to be great."Rapp quickly rose through the ranks of amateur competition and made her professional debut in 2024. She compiled an impressive 8-1-1 record as a professional and captured the World Boxing Council's North American Boxing Federation Featherweight Championship. In June, she had the opportunity to challenge Tiara Brown for the WBC Women's Featherweight World Championship in a fight televised on ESPN+.Although Rapp lost the fight, she quickly earned the respect of an elite fighter in Brown."Hannah Rapp was the best dance partner I have ever faced as a pro," Brown said following the fight. "When she asked for my autograph, it filled my heart because we were getting ready for war, yet she was still asking for my autograph. It made me smile. It was my honor to share the ring with her."Family fighting for justiceMedina was arrested and charged with manslaughter shortly after the incident, and an additional charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon was added later. After his arrest, details of Medina's extensive criminal record emerged with 13 previous arrests in Brazos County alone, including multiple arrests for reckless driving and a hit-and-run in 2020. He was actively out on bond for a firearm felony when he struck and killed Rapp.Since Rapp's death, her friends and family have begun advocating for Hannah's Law, which seeks stricter bond reforms and restrictions for drivers with records like Medina's. The three main goals of Hannah's Law are to expand judicial discretion to allow judges to evaluate a defendant's driving record when setting or denying bond, require courts to consider repeat vehicular offenses in pre-trial risk assessments, and create stronger mandatory review mechanisms for defendants out on bond for violent or firearm-related felonies when secondary public safety violations occur.A change.org petition for Hannah's Law has already gathered more than 8,000 signatures. The parity era in the NBA seems like it could continue. At least, that's what oddsmakers and bettors appear to believe after LeBron James' latest decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers.New York's championship run last month capped a season that extended an unprecedented run of NBA parity, with eight different franchises winning titles in the last eight seasons Toronto in 2019, James and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, Milwaukee in 2021, Golden State in 2022, Denver in 2023, Boston in 2024, Oklahoma City in 2025 and now the Knicks.There's at least a reasonable chance now that the run of new champions will continue in 2027, with reigning Western Conference champion San Antonio, Minnesota, Detroit, Cleveland, Miami and, of course, Philadelphia now among the teams with the best odds right now of hoisting the Larry O'Brien Trophy next June.A look at the teams and their odds, broken down by tiers:The favoritesJames' decision moved Philadelphia into the upper tier of favorites but not the highest tier.Most major sportsbooks and prediction markets are clear: Teams are going to have to get through Oklahoma City and San Antonio to get out of the West. The Thunder, as of Saturday and a lot will likely change in the next 10 months or so would still be considered a slight favorite to win the NBA title in 2027, barely ahead of the Spurs.That shouldn't be a surprise: The Thunder are led by two-time Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and have a proven championship core, while the Spurs have unanimous Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama as the centerpiece of a young team that took huge strides in 2025-26 and should only get better.Close to the topThis is the James impact: He's got Philadelphia right there with defending champion New York.The Knicks and 76ers have the third- and fourth-best championship odds in some order, depending on the site according to most books and prediction markets.The good news for the Knicks: They're right where they were entering last season, not quite the favorites but ahead of just about everybody in the league when it comes to title odds.The good news for the 76ers: They're going to have their best entering-the-season odds since probably 2019-20.At No. 5, BostonSome of the Celtics' decisions this summer particularly the trading of Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia have faced serious criticism. Bettors don't seem to mind, perhaps mindful of how the Celtics exceeded many expectations last season.Boston is firmly the No. 5 choice right now according to most books and markets, not quite there with the Thunder, Spurs, Knicks and 76ers, but leading the rest of the pack.The next five (or six)This is where things start to get muddled, and where books and markets tend to vary on that next tier the teams with the sixth-best through 11th-best odds.Denver, Toronto, Minnesota, Detroit and Cleveland are all jammed fairly close together. The only real rising team in that mix is Toronto, clearly based on the expectation that the Raptors will eventually close the trade for Kawhi Leonard and bring back the key to their 2019 title run.The next team in the race for a top-10 preseason odds spot is Miami. Betting opinions seem to vary widely, though the one thing that is consistent is an expectation that the acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo to play alongside Bam Adebayo will get the Heat back into the playoffs.The should-be-playoff-bound groupEven though the Lakers lost James, the odds still say that Luka Doncic's team will be playoff-bound next season. And bettors seem to think that 2025 NBA finalist Indiana, which played without Tyrese Haliburton this past season because of injury and plummeted to the bottom of the league, will return to the playoffs this season.Houston and Golden State round out the top 15 in current odds, suggesting that the belief is those clubs are postseason-bound as well.Not too far back from there: Atlanta, Orlando and Portland.The hoping-for-play-in-berths tierWashington will have Trae Young, Anthony Davis and Khris Middleton. Bettors expect the Wizards to be better but aren't ready to put money on them being a playoff team yet.The Wizards, with No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa, are in a cluster of teams that odds point to as possible play-in candidates, along with Phoenix, Charlotte, Dallas and Utah.The long shotsValue bettors can find some very good odds right now on the clubs that books and markets aren't loving right now.That group: the Los Angeles Clippers, New Orleans, Chicago, Memphis, Milwaukee, Brooklyn and Sacramento.A reminder there's always a surprise. Charlotte was toward the bottom of most preseason odds lists this past season and won 44 games.
