The New England Patriots have placed rookie edge rusher Gabe Jacas on the active/non-football injury list. ESPN's Mike Reiss reported the news on Sunday. This news comes after the Patriots finally came to a contract agreement with Jacas, who missed all of the team's spring practices. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel indicated that the team would be cautious with Jacas considering the time missed and the fact that he is working his way back from multiple injuries. Going on the NFI list means that Jacas is not ready to practice at this time, but that status can change at any moment. The Patriots probably hope it's sooner rather than later given their questionable depth at edge rusher. Harold Landry is currently on the PUP list, leaving the unit down to Dre'Mont Jones, Bradyn Swinson, Elijah Ponder and Jesse Luketa.Follow-up: After officially signing second-round pick Gabe Jacas, the Patriots placed him on the active/non-football injury list.Head coach Mike Vrabel said the team would take a cautious approach. ESPN's Bill Barnwell recently wondered whether he could construct a roster of backup players capable of contending. He went through all 32 rosters looking for players, including rookies. Barnwell also said he was looking for at least one player from each team, but no more than two.He ended up plucking two players off the Minnesota Vikings for his squad, choosing LB Ivan Pace Jr. and punter Bret Thorson, an undrafted free agent out of Georgia. Pace, a starter each of his first two seasons, lost the starting job to Eric Wilson last year and projects as a backup in 2026.Says Barnwell:Pace lost his job through no fault of his own, as former Packers linebackerEric Wilsonsuddenly went supernova and started demolishing running backs in pass protection to earn more playing time. Pace is undersized at 5-10 and 236 pounds, but he's a capable player around the line of scrimmage and in coverage. Thorson spent four years punting at Georgia and will compete withJohnny Hekkerfor the starting job in Minneapolis.Pace was the Vikings' lowest-graded defender on PFF (45.1) among players who logged at least 100 snaps. There are plenty of reasons why all three teams would hesitate, but there is also something to enjoy for everyone involved.For Cleveland, bringing back Irving would erase the sting of missing out on the storybook reunion with James and turn a summer of heartbreak into one of nostalgia and excitement.Of course, Harden is a free agent at the moment because he opted out of his contract to help give the Cavs some flexibility if James were to sign. For this hypothetical trade, say this happens after Harden is re-signed to a deal.Would pairing Irving with Mitchell give the Cavs a better chance to compete in a suddenly dangerous Eastern Conference? Harden and Mitchell flashed plenty of promise in their three months as teammates, so the Cavs might think twice about sending away a durable star for a fragile one. But Irving is younger and, in many eyes, the better player.Would a starting lineup of Irving, Mitchell, Max Strus, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen position the Cavs for dominance in the Eastern Conference?When healthy, Irving remains one of basketballs most gifted offensive players. There has, however, been some speculation linking both sides in the years since Harden departed from the franchise, with rumors once circulating that the 11-time All-Star would be open to going back to the team he was traded to from the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2012.Harden spent eight seasons in Houston, where he arrived as one of the top players in basketball and won the 2018 MVP award in the process.Pairing Harden with Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun would give the Rockets real incentive to do this trade. As currently-constructed, the Rockets are a full tier below the elites of the West. The Golden State Warriors interest in Trey Murphy III has not translated into meaningful progress because their current offer falls short of what the New Orleans Pelicans want.Golden State has proposed a package centered around two first-round picks for the 26-year-old wing, according to ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel. New Orleans has continued asking for three first-round selections and a young player it views as part of its long-term core.That final piece may be the biggest obstacle.The Warriors Trey Murphy III pursuit has stalled as the Pelicans demand three first-round picks and a promising young player. NBAE via Getty ImagesNew Orleans has not changed their asking price of three first-round picks for Murphy and a young player they can add to their core, something the Dubs do not have to offer, Siegel wrote.The Warriors have several players aged 24 or younger, including Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody, Gui Santos and rookie Yaxel Lendeborg. Those players apparently dont move the needle for the Pelicans or the Warriors are not interested in mortgaging the future.That leaves the Warriors in an uncomfortable position after already missing out on LeBron James, who chose to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.Murphy would address several of Golden States most glaring needs. He averaged 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals last season while shooting 37.9% from 3-point range. His combination of size, shooting and defensive versatility would make him a natural fit alongside Stephen Curry.He could also help carry the offense while Jimmy Butler recovers from a torn ACL.The problem is that New Orleans has little incentive to lower its price. Murphy is entering his prime, remains under contract and is coming off the best season of his career. His production and age make him appealing, but the Pelicans requested return resembles the price typically attached to a proven All-Star.For now, Golden State appears headed toward returning much of the same roster that missed the playoffs last season. Draymond Green is expected to re-sign, but Butlers injury leaves Curry without a dependable second scoring option to begin the year.Murphy could provide both immediate help and long-term value.The Warriors simply may not have what New Orleans wants to make it happen.
