SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBengals owner Mike Brown not answering questions at media luncheonThe Cincinnati Bengals are switching up the lineup of speakers for their annual season-kickoff media luncheon, and owner Mike Brown won't be conducting his annual roundtable with media members. The media event, known as the Mock Turtle Soup Luncheon for the dish Brown has infamously served over the years, typically includes a question-and-answer session between Brown and media members. That won't be the case for the July 27 event, which is only scheduled to see Brown present the Paul Brown Excellence in Coaching Award, according to the team's invitation. The significance of Brown not doing his usual question-and-answer session is that it's typically the only media availability with the owner throughout the year. The scheduled speakers for the event include Director of Player Personnel Duke Tobin, Head Coach Zac Taylor, Defensive Coordinator Al Golden, Offensive Coordinator Dan Pitcher and Special Teams Coordinator Darrin Simmons.Brown remained a fixture this past spring during organized team activities for the Bengals. The team is scheduled to begin training camp July 29 with its preseason opener scheduled for Aug. 13 against the Detroit Lions at Paycor Stadium (7 p.m.).This article originally appeared on Cincinnati Enquirer: Bengals owner Mike Brown not answering questions at media luncheon0 Comments 0 Shares 61 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDaniel Cormier: Magomed Ankalaev Next for 205 lbs Title ShotMagomed Ankalaev GettyUFC commentator Daniel Cormier believes that Magomed Ankalaev has done enough to get another title shot at 205 lbs.Ankalaev defeated Bogdan Guskov via fifth-round TKO in the main event of UFC Abu Dhabi to get back into the win column after losing the UFC light heavyweight title in his last fight to Alex Pereira at UFC 320 last October. With current champ Carlos Ulberg out until 2027 due to an ACL tear, Ankalaev may fight again in the meantime to solidify himself as the No. 1 contender at 205 lbs. But in Cormiers view, hes already done enough.Daniel Cormier Says Magomed Ankalaev Could Get LHW Title ShotSpeaking on his YouTube channel, Cormier said that by finishing Guskov, Ankalaev may have punched his ticket to getting another title shot at 205 lbs.The light heavyweight division is in a weird place right now because its got a new champion. Alex Pereira is up at heavyweight. Jamahal Hill is up at heavyweight. So a lot of the guys that have fought for the belt are out of the weight class and we havent seen as many young challengers show themselves to be ready, Cormier said (via MMAjunkie.com).Ankalaev getting that finish might have legitimately gotten him another opportunity to fight for the UFC championship against the new champion, Carlos Ulberg, when he comes back. He says he wants to be back early next year.Finish Was Necessary For Title ShotIn Cormiers mind, Ankalaev beating Guskov wasnt enough to get him the title shot at 205 lbs. But the fact that he finished Guskov was key.Ankalaev needed a finish. When you fight a guy thats ranked No. 9 in the world, and you are the No. 1 ranked contender, a former champion, youve got to finish those guys. Ankalaev ultimately did that. We were judging him pretty harshly in the fight watching, because it was a slow affair. But then midway through the second round he realized Bogdan Guskov was not engaging with Magomed Ankalaev. Ankalaev was pursuing him. He was trying to make it a fun fight. Guskov was unwilling to do that by backing up and skirting the outside of the octagon, Cormier said.Ankalaev lost his belt in devastating fashion to Alex Pereira at UFC 320. Hes been gone for a very long time, said he made a bunch of changes to his training camp, and honestly, his aggressiveness in the octagon showed he felt like he could get a finish, or hes done something differently to try to pursue finishes. While Ulberg vs. Ankalaev for the belt does make sense, the fact that Ulberg isnt healthy right now makes it seem like Ankalaev will fight one more time in the meantime.Ulberg proposed that Ankalaev fight Jiri Prochazka in a battle of two former UFC light heavyweight champions, while Ankalaev himself suggested that he take on Paulo Costa. So it does seem like he will fight more before fighting for the belt, but either way, the Guskov finish put him in a great spot.Like HEAVY's content?Be sure to follow us.This article was originally published on HEAVYThe post Daniel Cormier: Magomed Ankalaev Next for 205 lbs Title Shot appeared first on HEAVY.0 Comments 0 Shares 62 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReport: Lakers players believed LeBron James would sign with WarriorsFor most of this month, people across the NBA landscape were left to speculate which team LeBron James would sign with in free agency after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers. His process of officially choosing a new team took more than three weeks after the Lakers were told he wouldn't stay with them, and some wondered if he was intentionally prolonging the process in order to soak up more attention and headlines. In the end, he chose the Philadelphia 76ers -- and while it wasn't shocking, it was somewhat surprising, given that the 76ers already have three legitimate stars in Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and newcomer Jaylen Brown. For a while, the Golden State Warriors were one of the frontrunners to land the 41-year-old. Internally, members of the Lakers thought that's where he was headed, according to Dan Woike of The Athletic."Like anyone talking to people close to James throughout this free agency, I knew very little. I knew the things that James and his team had previously talked about valuing. I knew which places could best offer it, and I knew that when James picked, Id be able to pick through the pieces of evidence that revealed themselves in his final months with the Lakers."Had the destination been Golden State the predicted landing spot by plenty inside the Lakers locker room the reasoning wouldve been easy to put together."Woike outlined the reasons Golden State seemed to make lots of sense for James."James would be able to stay on the West Coast where he and his family had made their home the past eight years. Hed be able to play with people his age. Its easy to imagine the amazing dinners and amazing bottles of wine, the conversations beginning with, 'Remember when,' while the defining winners of a generation James, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Steve Kerr put the finishing touches on an era of NBA basketball."Melissa Rohlin of the California Post wrote recently that James' daughter Zhuri, a talented pre-teen volleyball player, would be a major influence in his decision and ultimately guide him to the Warriors.Instead, he's headed to the City of Brotherly Love, where he will walk into a team that's already loaded and will have a very real chance of winning the NBA championship. He agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract, which represents a very drastic pay cut from the $52.6 million he made last season. The second year of that new contract is a player option, which means that this coming season may not be the final one for the future Hall of Famer. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Report: Lakers players believed LeBron James would sign with Warriors0 Comments 0 Shares 64 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMInside ESPNs Bad Week: Leaks, Layoffs, and a PR Strategy Gone WrongI picked one heck of a time to take a vacation, huh? The second I head south to Florida to enjoy a seven day break, the news world is flooded with chaos. ESPN layoffs, the poor handling of notifying employees by multiple companies, Audacy and SiriusXM team up (smart move), so did SiriusXM and the WWE, and sports journalism suffered a black eye with coverage of an NFL story. The lone bright spot, being on vacation allowed me to watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup last Sunday between Spain and Argentina. Fox Sports did a masterful job with the entire broadcast, halftime included. A tip of the cap to Eric Shanks, Brad Zager, Jacob Ullman and their entire teams. The World Cup deserved world class coverage and presentation, and Fox Sports delivered.A Bad Week For ESPNESPN is exceptional in so many areas that when the company makes a rash of mistakes handling personnel matters its surprising. Given how many people work for ESPN in PR and management, a situation like last week should not happen. Jimmy Pitaro, Burke Magnus, Mike Foss, Dave Roberts and their teams dont need me to point that out. They know this doesnt meet ESPNs standards for handling personnel matters. It stains the good work theyre doing and creates doubt about who can be trusted.I dont have access to ESPNs books, an inside view of how each executive values each employee, or knowledge of upcoming transactions that will force bottom line adjustments. Ive seen the reports of Pat McAfees next potential contract, and I get why some want to blame him or Stephen A. Smith, but doing that shows a lack of business knowledge. Just like in professional sports, companies invest in difference makers differently. You can dislike Pat and Stephen A. but they are marquee attractions and proven performers who generate lift and revenue. If both were free agents tomorrow, theyd have larger deals waiting for them. ESPN should absolutely invest premium dollars in premium stars, and both men fit that description. Adam Schefter, Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and others warrant similar treatment.Bart Scott, Cam Newton, Charles Davis, Andreas Hale, David Lloyd, Stephania Bell, Tom Pelissero, Karl Ravech and Ryan Clark were part of the latest round of cuts. With ESPNs three billion acquisition of NFL Media assets, some of these moves were not shocking. However, none of these people should have learned their fate from outside sources. Karl Ravech is a true pro who gave over three decades of his life to ESPN. His situation being fumbled bothered me most. Ive never met anyone during my career who has ever said a bad word about Karl. He deserved far more respect than what he was afforded. That does not mean others who were let go didnt deserve better communication too. They did. If I were in Jimmy Pitaros shoes Id be bothered by the fact that someone I trust leaked sensitive news. If executives didnt like Ryan Clarks work or style and wanted him out, thats fine. What isnt acceptable is the way it was managed. When information gets leaked to Oukick of Clarks pending exit, it suggests someone wants to make him look bad. Outkick did their job correctly. This isnt about Bobby Burack and Dan Zaksheskes information or process. They were on top of all of it. This is about someone internally at ESPN making a choice to push news of the move to Outkick, knowing the outlet didnt have great history with Clark. In my opinion, ESPN PR looks really bad here too. Outkick provided a professional courtesy. That led to scrambling to make sure Clark was notified and pulled off the air mid-show. PR then ran to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic to report it first. Collectively, this was a mess. First, Ryan should not have been on the air for that final show. Secondly, PR handled the Outkick situation terribly. You may dislike that they had the story but by running to Marchand, they not only stained ESPN PRs image and created a far worse future problem with Outkick, but they didnt help Marchands image either. Andrew is an excellent reporter whose work I enjoy a lot. This creates an impression that hes a mouthpiece for ESPN PR and management, which isnt fair. The last thing Ill say about the Ryan Clark saga is that I know there are strong, mixed opinions on him. Speaking only for myself, I think Ryans work on The Pivot has been more interesting than his work on ESPN. Some of the race fueled conversations on ESPN were not my cup of tea but I also dont walk in the shoes of a black man who spent years in the NFL. Ryan has had a different life experience than I have. I can respect that. Whether Ive agreed, disagreed, enjoyed a show or tuned out, I try to remember that the first goal for a talent is to get people to care enough about what youre saying to generate fans and critics. Clark certainly had both. ESPN will be fine without Ryan Clark. I hope Ryan is able to do the same without ESPN. There are a number of good people at ESPN. Ive said many times that I think Jimmy Pitaro has done a great job leading ESPN. Burke, Dave, Mike, Justin Craig and Amanda Gifford are others who I like and have great respect for. The same applies to many in their PR department. But covering the industry requires calling out the losses too, not just highlighting the wins. ESPN added gasoline to a raging inferno last week and created a larger mess for an already negative situation. Being dubbed the worldwide leader is often a positive. Unfortunately, managing this situation is one area where ESPN didnt measure up.Ten ObservationsThe Portland Trail Blazers had an ESPN-week of their own The franchise cut ties with many across their radio and television broadcasts including Neil Everett, who learned of his exit in a Forbes article. Also out are Michael Holton, Travis Demers, Jamie Hudson and Tom Haberstroh. Veteran PXP voice Kevin Calabro exited too, rejecting an offer he labeled as subprime. New owner Tom Dundon may wind up being great but today, fans and industry pros are angry and questioning the teams future in Portland. Broadcasters who gave years of service deserved better than what they received. Fans have less incentive to buy tickets, advertisers have less reasons to buy advertising and employees have less trust in who they now work for than they did a week ago.49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was in a major car accident on July 14th. The team sought to keep the story quiet until training camp opened on July 25th. A couple of local and national reporters complied. Pro Football Talks Mike Florio wrote an outstanding piece on this. In the article, Mike shared a memorable line from Jay Glazer. He said, true journalism in sports involves finding out the stuff they dont want us to know, not reporting something thats going to be announced in five minutes. With ESPN and the NFL aligned, this doesnt increase confidence that the league wont influence what gets reported.Speaking of influence, SiriusXM and the WWE have partnered to create WWE Radio. At first glance, its a no-brainer. Why wouldnt SiriusXM want to be in business with the best wrestling company on the planet? Adding audio play by play for WWE events is excellent, and something I called for ten years ago. Bringing it finally to life is exciting. Overall, this is a homerun for both parties, but it raises questions for SXMs flagship show Busted Open. Hardcore fans of the program are concerned that the show will ignore or severely reduce its focus on AEW and other outside wrestling companies. Dave LaGreca has said the new partnership wont change how the show operates. All involved should expect tighter scrutiny moving forward. Listeners will be monitoring the content closely.Disturbed put on an incredible show Saturday night at Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. This was my fourth time seeing them live. It was their best show yet. Vocalist David Draiman was outstanding from start to finish. The band played nearly every hit, sounded tight and had incredible energy. Disturbed doesnt have future shows listed as of now, but if they come to your city, go! Photo Credit: Disturbed on X courtesy of Britt BowmanIt was sad to learn the news that Jon Bon Jovi had to end the bands recent show at Madison Square Garden over vocal issues. By all accounts, the prior shows went well. Im not the bands business manager nor do I know what Jons intentions are, but Billy Joel created a great blueprint with a monthly residency at MSG. Wouldnt that make sense for a band like Bon Jovi especially in the northeast? Assuming of course, Jons voice is strong enough to hold up on a monthly basis. Thanks to Kurt Kretzschmar of Premiere Networks for the heads up on this. Arizona State is launching the nations first bachelors degree in Content Creation. The course will teach students how to build an audience, grow a personal brand, analyze social media performance, and graduate with a real online following. Some will see this as long overdue. Others will question if its worth four years of investment when you can learn and create yourself on social media. What I want to know is, are Ryan Hatch, Scott Sutherland, Chris Berry, Aaron Trimmer and others with local ties teaching? Selling the future on audience building sounds great, but not unless its coming from folks who have actually done it.Barstool Sports has announced its adding another Gruden to its operation. Former Commanders Head Coach Jay Gruden is joining his brother Jon Gruden for a new podcast titled Gruden Family Football Show. Kayce Smith will serve as the host. Production for the program will originate out of Tampa. The show is launching this fall.Red Seat Ventures CEO Chris Balfe recently joined Business Insiders Peter Kafka for a conversation. In it, Balfe talked about Netflixs move to challenge YouTube in podcasting, and the term podcast being archaic (agreed), but Balfes views on video clipping were what particularly grabbed my attention. He pointed out that the short-form video marketplace last year was over $100 billion: 50 billion with Meta, with YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok, making up the rest. Chris believes media companies and creator economy companies have made a big mistake. He explains the challenges associated with distributing and monetizing long-form and short-form content. Worth your time if you care about business issues.I want to give a shout out to our own Dylan Barrett. A year ago at this time, Barrett Media was not producing video on a regular basis. I hired Dylan after graduating and told him, get us out there consistently, expand our presence across most platforms, highlight our speakers, and make sure the brand looks strong. We added the Barrett Media Minute, The 4-Cast, sessions from the Summits, and began clipping a bunch of great conversations to highlight our Summit speakers so people would check out the full conversations. One year later, and we just celebrated our first full month of eclipsing over 1 million video views across all platforms. Great job, kid!And finally, the New York Post featured a story last week on ex-CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin where she openly talked about her sex life. When I first saw the headline I thought it had to be AI or a meme designed to generate attention. Nope. It was accurate. If Baldwin wants to openly discuss her personal life, go for it, but when youre the same person who acted outraged at Clay Travis for mentioning the word boobs on national television, it creates the impression that the performance on television was less than authentic.Barrett Media produces daily content on the music, news, and sports media industries.Sign upfor our newsletters to stay updated and get the latest information right in your inbox.Jason BarrettJason Barrett is the Founder and CEO of Barrett Media.
