SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCathy Engelbert may be unpopular with WNBA players, but shes not paid to be their bestieCathy Engelbert doesnt communicate well with the players of the WNBA. She doesnt text the current women in the workforce on their birthdays, nor acknowledge the O.G.s on their retirements. Mostly, she doesnt reach out when they feel under attack from the cretins crawling about social media. Some of the WNBAs biggest stars say they have no relationship with Engelbert. To put it succinctly, shes not a good hang. When she does open up, though, Engelbert can come across as dodgy. When asked straight-to-the-point, no-fluff questions, she breaks out her best Neo, dodging those kinds of direct inquiries from reporters as though theyre bullets from Agent Smith. In a nutshell, her interpersonal skills suck.Yet for all that Engelbert lacks in warmth, she seems to be doing the one thing that shes paid to do well. And thats to be the commissioner of a major, growing and prosperous professional sports league. Its time to stop adding new and superfluous job requirements to the job description for WNBA commissioner. Neither Engelbert nor anyone who might replace her can live up to the touchy-feely standards some people have placed upon this position.Put another way:The league doesnt need a change at the top. However, players, stakeholders and fans of the W need to change their expectations.Engelbert might never master how to effectively dap and tuck it in like NBA commissioner Adam Silver expertly knows how to greet his players. Instead, she does expertly provide cover to a group of team owners you know, her employers who largely remain out of the crosshairs of criticism. (Shouldnt team owner Mat Ishbia have received questions about the support he provided Phoenix Mercury players when they faced online attacks?)Engelbert might never bear-hug a draft pick the way NFL commissioner Roger Goodell does so affectionately every April. However, she did help corral a media rights deal that has soared past $3 billion, money generated from several broadcast partners such as Disney, USA Sports and NBC Universal. (Such has been the growth of the league that the 16 percent stake sale she made in 2022, when the league needed an infusion of cash, now looks like a raw deal.)Dont ever, ever expect her to invite an enemy I mean, a reporter over to her personal residence, the way NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman has. Engelbert, however, oversaw the approval of a new collective bargaining agreement and a revenue share the first of its kind in womens professional sport that is projected to provide upwards of $1 billion in player salaries and benefits over the next seven years.Engelbert might never be considered as chill, down for the cause, or the kind of boss the players would want to sit down with and sip a Stud Bud cocktail. But last we checked, the WNBA is booming. The average WNBA salary has risen 450 percent under her watch, from roughly $130,000 in 2020 to $600,000 now. If money is the marker for progress and yes, in professional sports, money is always the main thing then shes doing her job. As much as it pains me to admit.Ive rolled my eyes at the many missteps of Engelbert. Why couldnt she just condemn the racism leveled at Angel Reese and other players during that 2024 CNBC interview, rather than praise the television ratings? Why did she, according to Napheesa Collier, act defensive about the blatantly poor officiating by calling players who complain losers? Whyd she have to insult her audience at the start of this season by bringing up her gender when asked a fair question about her job performance? Ugh.Messaging is part of her job description, and shes not exceptionally good at that. This tracks with one of the biggest complaints against Engelbert. She doesnt talk enough with players.Recently, The Athletics Annie Costabile wrote a fascinating, well-reported piece about how Engelbert is viewed around the league. One telling anecdote: Former player Candace Parker said she receives a gift from Silver, the NBA commissioner, every Christmas, and that he reached out to congratulate her following her retirement. However, Parker never heard from Engelbert.New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu also said she talks to Silver more than Engelbert. Las Vegas Aces forward Aja Wilson, the leagues best player and four-time MVP, said she only speaks to Engelbert when the commissioners in town to present her a trophy. These women of the W arent the only professional athletes to point out their icy relationship with their commissioner. In 2020, many men of Major League Baseball didnt like Rob Manfred, in part, because he had described their games championship trophy as a piece of metal. No offense to these elite athletes, but a commissioner was never meant to be a camp counselor. The businesswomen and men who run sports leagues come from backgrounds in the legal field or Fortune 500 companies. Their personalities arent exactly warm and cuddly. Sure, its great that Silver, a lawyer adept at dapping, is generally liked by players, but that relationship equity can disappear the moment he makes a controversial ruling, such as the 65-game minimum rule. The job of a commissioner, at the core, is to protect the interests of the owners and raise capital for the league. Engelbert has done that. And surely, Parker might appreciate the $100,000 bonus shes entitled to as a retired player, following the ratification of the CBA, more than any Christmas card she gets from Silver.Still, the widespread belief that Engelbert hasnt done enough to protect players might be her downfall.More than any other sports league, the WNBA is fraught with land mines that are ready to explode whenever a Black woman like, Alyssa Thomas commits a hard foul on, say, the leagues most visible star, Caitlin Clark. Or when a culturally conservative player/podcaster, Sophie Cunningham, voices her opinion on trans athletes. Or when some man behaving like a degenerate gambler plods into Chelsea Grays DMs with a disgusting slur.No commissioner can police, or be held responsible for, online behavior. However, the truth is, for any modern-day pro player under attack, help isnt merely available; its plentiful. Billionaire owners, the teams front office, coaches, agents and managers their job descriptions are to protect their people. Since when did it become the duty of a league commissioner to serve as support staff? The rank stench of racism, homophobia and misogyny still perfumes our world, on social media and in society at large. It isnt going away. And no one leader can magically make wayward fans behave. Not even one who regularly texts hey girl! to players. No commissioner not Silver, not Goodell, not anyone could have stopped the ugly blowback directed at Thomas following her flagrant foul against Clark.WNBA players are unhappy with Engelberts lack of outreach, behind the scenes, when that sort of ugliness happens. Point taken. But for the now-flourishing WNBA, the question remains: Can the league be about business, without expecting its commissioner to be the players bestie? This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Minnesota Lynx, New York Liberty, Seattle Storm, Los Angeles Sparks, Washington Mystics, Atlanta Dream, Chicago Sky, Connecticut Sun, Indiana Fever, Dallas Wings, Las Vegas Aces, Phoenix Mercury, Golden State Valkyries, Portland Fire, Toronto Tempo, WNBA, WNBA Highlights2026 The Athletic Media Company0 Comments 0 Shares 19 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWill LeBron Win In Philly? Dont Bet On It.Nov 27, 2023; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid (21) talks with Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23) during the second quarter at Wells Fargo Center. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn ImagesThere was a lot of hullabaloo last week when LeBron finally made his free agency decision and chose the Philadelphia 76ers, which was a surprise. Most people expected him to pick either Miami or Cleveland; in fact, Miami had already prepared a social media announcement, which was accidentally posted prematurely. But its Philly, because, as always with James, its where he thinks hes most likely to win a title. Is that going to happen? Well, maybe, but the odds are against it. Lets look. First, theres James himself. Hes played for 23 seasons already, and give him full credit: hes done an amazing job of keeping himself in great shape, and still, at 41, remains a tremendous player. But hes not the player he once was. Last year, we saw several occasions when he just didnt react on defense. Hes not nearly as explosive as he once was, and the brutal reality is that he will never be better than he was last season. Time catches up to everyone, even King James. This is also important: He played 82 regular season games in 2017-18, but since then? 2018-19: 55 games2019-20: 67 games2020-21: 45 games2021-22: 56 games2022-23: 55 games2023-24: 71 games2024-25: 70 games2025-26: 60 gamesHe missed more than a quarter of last season, and hes missed plenty over the last eight seasons, as noted. But hes not the biggest problem. That would be Joel Embiid, who, at 32, has had even more problems. Over the same period, heres how his availability has been:2018-19: 64 games2019-20: 51 games2020-21: 51 games2021-22: 68 games2022-23: 66 games2023-24: 39 games2024-25: 19 games2025-26: 38 games Now, bear in mind that in 2019-20, the season was limited by Covid, and no one played more than 67 games, but still, thats not a great track record. And dont forget that Embiid lost his first two seasons to injuries. On the bright side, the Sixers now have Jaylen Brown, who has been outstanding for his entire career, VJ Edgecombe, who will really benefit from Jamess experience, and Tyrese Maxey, who has really proven himself. Thats a great perimeter, but theres a lot riding on James and Embiid staying healthy. And if they dont, who do they have to step in? Theres not much on the bench. If you were betting on next year, youd probably be wise to look to the Spurs. They crashed hard against the Knicks in the finals, but their core is young, talented, and just got socked in the nose. They learned a lot from New York, and our guess is theyll be highly motivated for another shot.Go to the DBR Boardsto find Blue Healer Auctions||Drop us a line0 Comments 0 Shares 22 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBCB, BCCI working on September window, subject to government nod; Afghanistan T20Is may be postponedNew Delhi: In a development which could bring about a thaw in the relationship between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Indian cricket board (BCCI) after a years uncertainty, TOI understands that both boards are working on an itinerary for Indias tour of Bangladesh in the first half of Sept.It has been learnt that the BCCI is set to push back the thre-match T20I series against Afghanistan to be held in Delhi to clear a window for a white-ball series in Bangladesh. The eventual nod for the series will come from the Indian govt, but the boards want to make sure everything is ready when the approval comes.India refused to tour Bangladesh last year due to diplomatic tensions which was followed by Bangladesh forfeiting their place in the T20 World Cup in India after Mustafizur Rahman was ousted from the IPL in Jan.TOI understands that the BCB has kept all its venues free from Sept 1 as it is proposing a few combinations for BCCI to choose as per convenience. Indias Test tour of Sri Lanka is due to end on Aug 27. If the series against Afghanistan is pushed back, that could open up a two-week window in Sept. The Afghanistan series, to be hosted by Afghanistan Cricket Board, was scheduled to start from Sept 13.BCB is also fine with the idea of holding all matches at one venue. They ideally prefer three T20Is at one venue and three ODIs in another. Dhaka and Chattogram are the leading venues. Playing just one format was a possibility too. The two boards held discussions on the sidelines of the recent ICC meet in London. Indias commitment to Afghanistan is a hurdle that was discussed. But the tour is subject to govt approval, a BCCI source told TOI.The BCCI had informed the selectors about the Afghanistan series, but an official announcement of Afghanistan hosting India in Delhi was delayed for this reason. It is now learnt that preparations for that series have been pushed back. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, answering to a query on the relationship with Bangladesh post the Mustafizur episode, had told TOI in May that the BCCI has decided to move on from the bygones and the board intends to build healthy relationships with other member boards.0 Comments 0 Shares 22 Views 0 Reviews
