14 best available free agents in training camp; what makes sense for Jaguars?
Training camp begins this week for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and there are still a number of notable free agents who remain available.Could any of them be of interest to the Jaguars? We saw last summer that GM James Gladstone is more than willing to constantly tweak his roster. Although it's important to note that this year's team is in a different spot than they were a year ago, with a heavy amount of turnover taking place in 2025 as Gladstone reshaped the roster in his vision. That said, the Jaguars do have a few positions where an addition could be justified, but are those needs where the remaining free agent talent still exists?ESPN's Matt Bowen has his recent ranking of the top 14 free agents still on the market. Here is a look at who's still out there and whether or not it makes sense for the Jaguars to consider making a signing.Offensive line free agentsOT Taylor DeckerOT Cam RobinsonG Kevin ZeitlerG Mekhi BectonOT Jonah WilliamsWhat's the need? The Jaguars don't have a real need along the offensive line. All nine players who were on the 53-man roster last season are still under contract, plus the team added Emmanuel Pregnon in the draft.Wide receiver free agentsStefon DiggsDeebo SamuelWhat's the need? Wide receiver is arguably the deepest position group on the roster. Gladstone also made two additions in the NFL draft to round out this depth chart.Edge rusher free agentsJoey BosaJadeveon ClowneyHaason ReddickWhat's the need? This is one position where an addition would make sense. While Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker will lead the way, edge rusher is a heavily rotated position where depth is crucial, and the Jaguars are currently relying on a number of inexperienced players to take on those reps.Tight end free agentsJonnu SmithWhat's the need? There isn't a need at tight end for the Jaguars. Nate Boerkircher and Tanner Koziol join Brenton Strange and Quintin Morris, while Hunter Long could be on the outside looking in during roster cutdowns.Linebacker free agentsBobby WagnerWhat's the need? The Jaguars have to replace Devin Lloyd, but they have a number of options already on the roster to fill that starting role. This is a very crowded position group already, where some tough decisions could have to be made.Cornerback and safety free agentsCB Trevon DiggsS Donovan WilsonWhat's the need? The back end of the cornerback depth chart still has to shake out, but Christian Braswell and Jabbar Muhammad appear to be the front-runners for those final roster spots. At safety, five roster spots are seemingly accounted for already. I wouldn't anticipate an addition at either position. This article originally appeared on Jaguars Wire: 14 best available free agents in training camp; what makes sense for Jaguars?

Rivera: Pirlo not right for Italy, Im amazed anyone thought he could be
Rivera: Pirlo not right for Italy, Im amazed anyone thought he could beItaly legend Gianni Rivera hit out at Andrea Pirlo and Paolo Maldini after the Russian gambling controversy. He cannot be the right person to lead the Nazionale, and Im shocked anyone thought he could be.The decision had seemingly been made to appoint Pirlo, the third choice for technical director Maldini and special advisor Leonardo after Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola turned down the job. However, it was scuppered by the revelation that Pirlo was a global brand ambassador for Fonbet, a Russian gambling site that is banned in Italy, which included a promotional visit to Moscow as recently as May 2026.MILAN, ITALY MAY 21: Andrea Pirlo and Paolo Maldini attend Special Teams Legends Onlus Press Conference on May 21, 2019 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Claudio Villa/Getty Images)It is reported that Maldini was still pushing to appoint his former Milan teammate, but it was blocked by FIGC President Giovanni Malag.Rivera lashes out over Pirlo controversyFLORENCE, ITALY FEBRUARY 03: Gianni Rivera of Figc during the Panchina DOro Prize award at Centro Tecnico Federale di Coverciano on February 3, 2020 in Florence, Italy. (Photo by Gabriele Maltinti/Getty Images)Pirlo is not the right person, Italy legend and ex-politician Rivera told Repubblica newspaper. When it comes to his rapport with Russia, we must be very severe. At times like this, a similar relationship would expose the entire Italian football movement to a reputational risk.He cannot be the right person to lead the Nazionale, and Im shocked anyone thought he could be. I think and hope Maldini was not aware of this connection with the gambling company in Moscow.Pirlo was not the only 2006 World Cup winner attending that event in Moscow back in May, as Marco Materazzi is also a brand ambassador for Fonbet.Francesco Totti has also recently visited Russia to participate in sponsorship events.

UNC football general manager Michael Lombardi placed on paid leave
The University of North Carolina Tar Heels' football program is set to open up training camp this week, entering year two of the Bill Belichick era. But on Monday, the program announced that general manager Michael Lombardi has been placed on administrative leave, effective immediately. The university offered no additional details and said leadership, staff and student-athletes were not permitted to discuss the personnel matter. It should be noted that the release came from UNC Vice Chancellor for Communications and Marketing Dean Stoyer, not from UNC athletics. Pete Nakos is reporting that the final decision to place Lombardi on paid administrative leave came from the North Carolina administration and not Belichick.North Carolina GM Michael Lombardi has been placed on paid leave, effective immediately. pic.twitter.com/XuyAiqtLmz Andy Staples (@AndyStaples) July 27, 2026With UNC coming off a very disappointing 2025 campaign, winning just four games, the hope was that the program could turn things around in year two. However, this is a rough start for the second season in the Belichick era.Lombardi was Bill Belichicks first hire after he accepted the UNC football coaching position in December 2024. The two worked together during Belichicks entire tenure as head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 1991-95, and Lombardi later worked with him again from 2014 to 2016 with the New England Patriots, when they won two Super Bowl rings.Lombardi also spent more than three decades in the NFL with the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns. He was the highest-paid general manager in college football when hired, with an annual salary of $1.5 million.North Carolina is set to open up the 2026 season in Ireland, facing off against TCU in Week 0.This story will be updated with more information as it's released.
