Where does CJ Baxter stack up with the rest of the SEC running backs
Recently, we ranked the starting quarterbacks in the SEC, with Kentucky Wildcats starter Kenny Minchey ranking in the top ten. How does the rest of the team rank?We continue ranking each position group in the SEC to see where Kentucky stacks up with the rest of the conference. Running back is a question mark heading into the season for the Wildcats. There is boom-or-bust potential with CJ Baxter and Jovantae Barnes. The conference is loaded with some of the best running backs in the country, and here is where we think Baxter, the presumed starter, ranks among the SEC starting running backs.16. Matt Fuller, South CarolinaThe sophomore back for the Gamecocks, Matt Fuller, had 72 carries last season and had a total of 260 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Fuller's 3.6 yards per carry average has to improve if he wants to jump up on this list. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers has carried the offense recently and Shane Beamer is hoping his new offensive coordinator Kendall Briles will help develop some skill positions quickly.15. Xavier Robinson, OklahomaXavier Robinson is a big running back at 6'0, 235-pounds that averaged 5.1 yards per carry last season for the Sooners. Robinson totaled 421 rushing yards and four touchdowns, but the Sooner's struggled to find consistency on the ground. With a loaded wide receiver room and a healthy John Mateer, this should allow better looks for Robinson and the running game.14. Daniel Hill, AlabamaDaniel Hill rushed for just 284 yards and six touchdowns last season, and the Crimson Tide struggled to run the football all season. This is a problem that Kalen Deboer and his staff have to fix quickly with the inexperience they have at quarterback this season. Keep an eye on true freshman running back EJ Crowell as somebody who could eventually become the guy as the season progresses.13. Sutton Smith, ArkansasSutton Smith followed Arkansas head coach Ryan Silverfield from Memphis. At Memphis last season, Smith had 669 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 102 carries. He is looking to keep that momentum going as he transitions to the SEC, and he has a lot of expectations as he will be rocking the number five that was infamously worn by running back Darren McFadden for the Razorbacks.12. CJ Baxter, KentuckyCJ Baxter has range of outcomes that essentially all come down to his health. Baxter has a talent to be a bell cow back, but this could be more of a running back by committee approach from Will Stein and his staff. Kentucky's running backs will be behind an experienced offensive line with great expectations.11. Rueben Owens, Texas A&MRueben Owens returns as the Aggies leading running back with 639 rushing yards on 119 carries last season. Texas A&M will lean on quarterback Marcel Reed's legs as well, as the dual threat quarterback has to take a step this season. With Mario Craver and Isaiah Horton on the outside, Texas A&M will likely be a pass first team but they desperately need Owens to take a step this season.10. Caden Durham/Harlem Berry, LSULSU struggled to run the football last season, but they are hoping Lane Kiffin's offense can flip that in year one. Caden Durham had an impressive season in 2024, and Harlem Berry looks to improve off a solid first season with the Tigers. With Kiffin's explosive offense, expect this running back duo to be more than formidable in 2026.9. Fluff Bothwell, Mississippi StateFluff Bothwell had 677 yards and six touchdowns on 142 carries last season. Quarterback Kamario Taylor has a lot of talent and is dangerous with his legs. This can open up more looks for Bothwell this season as Jeff Lebby's team will try to win games on the offensive side of the football.8. Sedrick Alexander, VanderbiltSedrick Alexander had 567 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns last season on just 105 carries. Diego Pavia led the Commodores in carries the last two seasons, so expect Alexander to have an increased workload this season. Alexander will be in a unique rushing scheme from offensive coordinator Tim Beck and will likely be the engine for Vanderbilt's offense this season with true freshman quarterback Jared Curtis expected to be the signal caller.7. Jeremiah Cobb, AuburnJeremiah Cobb was a bell cow back for the Tigers last season with 175 carries. Cobb rushed for 969 yards and returns in a brand new offensive scheme. Alex Golesh will bring an offense with wide splits that creates light boxes to the plains, which can set up explosive opportunities on the ground for Cobb; quarterback Byrum Brown rushed for over 1,000 yards last season at USF as well.6. Nate Frazier, GeorgiaNate Frazier is a typical tough runner that we have become accustomed to under Kirby Smart. Frazier had 947 rushing yards last season on 173 carries. He will be running behind one of the best offensive lines in the conference.5. DeSean Bishop, TennesseeDeSean Bishop rushed for 1,076 yards and scored 16 touchdowns last season for the Vols. Josh Heupel's offensive scheme creates light boxes which allow explosive rushing opportunities. Expect the Vols to lean on Bishop with inexperience at quarterback.4. Hollywood Smothers/Raleek Brown, TexasTexas has weapons galore for quarterback Arch Manning, and the running back duo is the most dangerous 1-2 punch in the conference. Hollywood Smothers rushed for 969 yards at NC State last season. Raleek Brown rushed for 1,141 yards at Arizona State in 2025.3. Jadan Baugh, FloridaJadan Baugh had 1,170 rushing yards for the Gators last season. Baugh will be in a creative scheme with new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner who lives in pistol formations. Jon Sumrall will want to establish the run and he has one of the most talented running backs in the country to do so.2. Kewan Lacy, Ole MissKewan Lacy is extremely dynamic, and it is hard to imagine him not repeating his incredible season from 2025. Lacy rushed for over 1,500 yards last season and found the end zone 24 times. Lacy and quarterback Trinidad Chambliss make the Rebels one of the best offenses in the country.1. Ahmad Hardy, MissouriHead coach Eli Drinkwitz gave a promising update at SEC Media Days regarding Hardy's recovery from a gunshot wound he suffered this offseason. How fast Hardy can return to 100% remains a question, but it is no question that he is the best running back in the country when healthy. Hardy is a machine at forcing missed tackles, and he showed that last season with 1,649 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. This article originally appeared on UK Wildcats Wire: Where does CJ Baxter stack up with the rest of the SEC running backs

From England disappointment to Zimbabwe success: India coach hails Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's 'maturity level'
India's interim head coach VVS Laxman said 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has shown remarkable growth in his understanding of the game over the last six months, adding that the teenager's maturity has helped him handle pressure at the international level.Sooryavanshi finished India's tour of Zimbabwe on a high, winning both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards after India completed a 3-0 sweep with a 35-run win in the third and final T20I on Sunday."What is really impressive is the way he's evolved as a person. The maturity level, the understanding, and the awareness over the last six months has actually skyrocketed. And that's why he's been able to handle tough situations," Laxman said during the post-match press conference. The left-hander scored 151 runs in three innings at an average of 50.33, including 81 in the final match, which laid the platform for India's victory. His performances came after a difficult debut series against England, where he managed scores of 13, 14 and 15 before being dropped for the fifth and final T20I as India lost the series 0-4."He played Under-19 World Cup and in a matter of four to five months, he dominated the IPL. We know how tough IPL competition can be."Taking on the best of bowlers from not only India but around the world, the way he evolved, the way he progressed as an international cricketer and he showed what kind of potential and class and talent he has," said Laxman, who is serving as the interim head coach while Gautam Gambhir is on a break before India's two-Test tour of Sri Lanka next month.Laxman also highlighted Sooryavanshi's desire to improve, recalling how the youngster wanted to stay on the field despite suffering an injury during the final T20I."We have to also remember that he's just 15 years old. He's a very young boy. And he himself wants to get better in every aspect of the game. And if you see it, even today's game, he was taking the hot spot."Even though he got injured, he still wanted to be on the field. But it was our physio who actually asked him to come out. So, that's the eagerness and the earnestness he has to do and contribute in every possible way to the team," said Laxman. When asked if he expected Sooryavanshi to recover so strongly after his difficult start in England, Laxman said he was not surprised because the youngster had already shown he could deal with pressure during the IPL."It (performance) was on expected lines. Again, last year when he played for Rajasthan Royals for the first time, I think the way he handled pressure, because I believe that any IPL match is equivalent to an international match."And at the age of 14 or 15, when you're playing an IPL match, either you can be overawed by the big occasion or absorb and embrace the pressure. And I think he's taken the second option where he embraced the pressure. So, I'm not at all surprised the way this series has gone," said Laxman.

(Photo by Melina Pizano/WWE via Getty Images)WWE via Getty ImagesIt is officially SummerSlam week! The biggest party of the summer is back and will once again be in the two-night format. The first night of action will be held Saturday, August 1, at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota and will be followed by another night of action on Sunday, August 2. This will be the second consecutive year that SummerSlam will be a two-night PLE. The second of the Big 4 PLEs (WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble) followed in WrestleManias footsteps and will bring a jam-packed weekend of action with 12 matches currently announced between both nights. Night 1 could open with Femi-Lesnars Hell in a Cell match. The duo was the first match of Night 2 at WrestleMania 42, when Lesnar lost to Femi. Lesnar then took off his gloves after the match and appeared to retire. Morgan vs. Sky will have intrigue because the champion has held her belt for 100 days, and this will be her first televised title defense. Nick Aldis will make his in-ring WWE debut on Saturday night. Aldis spent eight years wrestling for TNA and then six years for NWA. When he joined WWE in 2023, he did so as the SmackDown General Manager. There have been plenty of teases that he would one day return to the ring, but now he has to do so against Gunther. Fatal Influence won the tag team championships at Saturday Nights Main Event, but with this being a six-woman tag match, the belts will not be on the line. SummerSlam Night 2 CardRoman Reigns (C) vs. Seth Rollins - World Heavyweight ChampionshipCharlotte Flair vs. Jade Cargill vs. Chelsea Green vs. Tiffany Stratton vs. Mystery Opponent - Interim WWE Womens Championship Ladder MatchFinn Blor vs. Sami Zayn - Undisputed WWE No. 1 Contenders MatchTrick Williams (C) vs. Baron Corbin - United States ChampionshipPenta (C) vs. Chad Gable - Intercontinental ChampionshipDanhausen vs. Dominik Mysterio - $100,000 on the lineIt doesn't get much bigger than this. There is plenty of speculation that it could be a wrestler from outside WWE making their debut, or a surprise return. Regardless, the surprise entrant will duke it out with four other women for Rhea Ripleys vacated title. Zayn won the WWE Championship at Night of Champions, but held the belt for only nine days. He dropped it to CM Punk, setting up a storyline where he demanded that Adam Pearce put him into the Rhodes-Punk championship match at SummerSlam. Instead, he ended up with a No. 1 Contenders match against Finn Blor, who had won a Fatal-Four-Way match to get into the match against Zayn.Danhausen will take on Dominik Mysterio with $100,000 on the line. Liv Morgan previously attempted to bribe Danhausen with $100,000 in human monies to curse Oba Femi before his match with Mysterio, but Danhausen refused. He then stole the money from the Judgment Day and then cursed the faction. After weeks of back-and-forth, this match will be for the $100,000. Baron Corbin made his shocking return to the WWE and has his eyes set on Trick Williams U.S. title. It will be Corbins first match back with the company after he attacked Williams twice, setting up the bout. Penta and Gable have come full circle. It was a loss to Penta that pushed Gable down the path toward becoming El Grande Americano and developing a respect for lucha libre. Now, Gable (as himself) will take on Penta for the IC title in his hometown of Minneapolis.

Liverpool's centre-back situation and why Iraola must act
Joe Gomez was forced off injured in Liverpool's first game under Andoni Iraola [Getty Images]Two centre-backs caught the eye of Liverpool's scouting department at the U17 World Cup in Qatar last November.Within weeks, the club spent a combined 3.5m on the pair: Senegal's Mor Talla Ndiaye and Austria's Ifeanyi Ndukwe.Under Matt Newberry, Liverpool's head of global talent, this was evidence of future planning in full flow.Yet surely no-one inside the club would have expected the teenage duo to be the centre-back pairing for most of Liverpool's opening pre-season fixture. With Joe Gomez forced off by injury in the eighth minute against Sunderland, and neither Jeremy Jacquet or Giovanni Leoni fit to play, Liverpool have a problem at the heart of their defence.Looking at the long term is one thing, but they need reinforcements in the here and now.Even before the injury, new head coach Andoni Iraola said his squad was "very thin" defensively.Gomez was absent from Liverpool's training session in Chicago on Sunday and an update on the severity of his injury is expected this week.He is Liverpool's longest-serving current player but has now missed 225 games because of injury, according to Transfermarkt, since signing from Charlton in 2015.Virgil van Dijk is the club's only fit senior centre-back. The Liverpool captain is 35 and played every minute in the Premier League last season, but he is not the force that he used to be.The Dutchman, like Gomez, is also into the last year of his contract at Anfield. There is a possibility both players will move on next summer. One of the reasons why Liverpool allowed Ibrahima Konate to leave on a free transfer and join Real Madrid was because they felt Jacquet, 21, and Leoni, 19, who cost 55m and 26m respectively, were the best young centre-backs in France and Italy.Perhaps they will prove inspired signings, with Jacquet in line to make his debut against Leeds on Sunday.Liverpool will give them every opportunity to fulfil their potential, but right now, just like Ndiaye and Ndukwe, both are far from the finished product."We need players. It's fairly obvious," former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler told BBC Sport in New York, where the Reds take on Wrexham on Wednesday."I'm very sad for Joe Gomez, who has been so unfortunate with injuries. This could have been a real chance to cement his place and for him to show that we don't need another centre-half."We've spent money on Jacquet and Leoni and the guidance that Joe and Virgil can give from their experience to the young lads is telling."We won't see the best version of the young lads yet, but you do need that experience in the squad. And yes, the manager's been on record saying that we need players and I would not be surprised if another centre-half is in that conversation."'Getting squad right keeps players on toes'From the outside, Liverpool's failure to seal a move for Marc Guehi last summer looks even more interesting now. They have a buyback clause with Jarell Quansah, who left for Bayer Leverkusen for 35m last July, but there are no current plans for Quansah to return.Sources stress that if Liverpool bring in Bradley Barcola, who Paris St-Germain value in excess of 100m, then there will be limitations to what more they can do in the market.Deals for Jacquet and Victor Munoz have cost a combined 89.5m.Without any major outgoings from Iraola's squad, there is an understanding that this summer will not be like last summer when a club record 450m was spent.Fowler, who scored 183 times for the Reds, said: "When you look at Liverpool across the last decade, one of the problems that we've had is that the first 11 is more than capable but the argument that people have is the squad depth."I'm a big believer in getting the squad right because it gives everyone a lift and keeps people on their toes, knowing that if you're not performing, someone else could do the job."Go back to the days of Phil Neal and he'll tell you stories about how players would never want to get injured because they knew that if someone else came, they wouldn't get their place back."You need that mentality and I think that has a real knock-on effect on standards."In six months from last summer through to January 2026, Liverpool agreed deals for five centre-backs who were aged 20 or under at the time - Leoni, Ndiaye, Ndukwe, Noah Adekoya and Jacquet. It is worth noting that Ndukwe, who was impressive against Sunderland, must go out on loan this year as he does not yet meet the criteria for a UK work permit. The long-term potential of centre-backs is not a concern at Anfield. But experience is in short supply - a glaring gap in this Liverpool squad and one that needs to be addressed.Chiesa happy but wants new chapter at LiverpoolWhat can Liverpool fans expect to see during their pre-season tour? The Bezos factor - unpicking puzzle of Liverpool's potential investorsAsk about Liverpool - what do you want to know?

Real Madrid megastar demanding a ‘historic’ contract to renew his deal – report
Real Madrid megastar demanding a historic contract to renew his deal reportVinicius Jr.s contract renewal is one of the biggest pending objectives of Real Madrids summer transfer window, especially given that the player has already entered the final year of his deal.Come January, the Brazilian will be free to discuss terms with external clubs, and Real Madrid are doing everything in their capacity to ensure he does not leave as a free agent this summer. The priority for both parties is to agree on a renewal, but Vinicius demands are too high for the boards liking. They have thus opened the possibility of selling him this summer should an agreement not be reached.A historic demandAs reported by Mario Cortegana viaInaki Angulos YouTube channel, Vinicius Jr. is demanding a historic contract from Real Madrid in order to renew, something the club will find difficult to offer.Vinicius demands a historic deal. (Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images)The Spanish journalist also describes the situation of Florentino Perez and Co. as having their hands and feet tied in front of the players demands, making it unlikely that they are met.For an agreement to be reached at this point, both parties will likely have to compromise. As matters stand, however, neither is willing to take a step back and are standing firm on their respective positions. In the journalists opinion, however, the ball is in Vinicius court given the contractual situation and the natural pressure building on the club with every passing day.Vinicius sees one practical optionArsenal are seen as the only top club capable of signing the Brazilian should he opt to leave this summer and have the financial stability required to pull off his transfer fee and salary. The Brazilian will return to pre-season soon. (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)For Vinicius, however, a move to London is not as appealing as it means he will have to forfeit the title of being a Real Madrid player, something that holds massive value and prestige. For the player, representing Los Blancos has always been his ultimate dream and he deeply wishes to reach an agreement over his renewal at the earliest. Should the club not budge on their offer, however, it remains to be seen which path he chooses to tread. As matters stand, negotiations are expected to restart once the player returns from his vacation after the FIFA World Cup.
