The Buffalo Bills kick off training camp on July 29 at St. John Fisher. This moves the team into the next major phase of the offseason ahead of the 2026 NFL season.Ahead of then, Bills Wire will examine every position group ahead of this pivotal time on the football calendar.This edition will focus on the Bills' offensive line unit: At the top Four of the five positions on the offensive line are set. Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown will bookend the line. O'Cyrus Torrence returns as the right guard, while Connor McGovern, fresh off signing a four-year, $52 million contract this offseason, will hold down the center spot.With David Edwards' departure via free agency, the left guard spot is now available. Corbett's contract is only for one year, so it appears the Bills are taking the same conservative gamble as they did when they initially signed David Edwards for depth in 2023.Sedrick Van Gran-Pranger and Lloyd Cushenberry provide depth at the interior line positions. The Bills also have Nick Broeker, Bruno Fina, Da'Metrius Weatherspoon, and 2026 seventh-round pick Ar'Maj Reed-Adams in the fold as reserves on the inside of the line. Behind Dawkins and Brown, the Bills roster Chase Lundt, Tylan Grable, and 2026 fourth-round selection Jude Bowry.Battles to watchThe left guard spot is the most intriguing one to watch this summer. Anderson has been a part of the Bills system since signing with the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2022. Anderson has seen time at various spots on the offensive line. He has worked primarily as a sixth offensive lineman in heavy sets. Corbett is a veteran who can fill the spot adequately in case Anderson is not ready for full-time duties. Corbett, however, has missed time in each of the past four seasons with injuries. The bottom end of the depth chart will be an interesting battle as well. Lundt, Grable, and Bowry may be in a fight for next-man-up duties at tackle. The Bills used early day three draft capital on Bowry, so he will be one to watch. Who needs a great camp? There are a few options that could fulfill this question, but we'll roll with Anderson. It's his time to step up and grab control of the left guard spot. He will most likely have the initial reps with the first team at guard during camp. A strong camp will solidify his spot as a starter. Clemson baseball is getting one of its best pitchers back for 2027.Aidan Knaak, who pitched the second-most innings for the Tigers in 2026, will return for his senior season despite getting drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fifth round of the MLB draft, according to a July 27 report from The Clemson Insider.Knaak's father spoke with them, stating that his son will be back at Clemson next season."AK has decided to return to Clemson for his senior season, Knaak's dad said. He has made significant changes to his mechanics and is excited for the opportunity to return and compete again at the highest level.The report comes hours before the deadline for MLB draftees to sign their draft contract at 5 p.m. ET on July 27.Knaak made 13 starts last season, finishing with a 5.81 ERA, 88 strikeouts and a 2-6 record in 57.1 innings. The Florida Gators are adding a well-traveled special teams coach to Jon Sumrall's staff.On Monday, CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz reported that the Gators are hiring Greg McMahon as a special teams analyst. McMahon, who most recently served as the special teams coordinator at Tulane under Sumrall in 2024, has more than three decades of special teams coaching experience.McMahon was the special teams coordinator for the New Orleans Saints from 2008-16 in addition to college stops in the same role at UNLV, Illinois, East Carolina and LSU, winning a national title with the latter. The college football season is nearing, with the first kickoff on August 29, training camp is starting a month before that, so were closing in on the start of fall practices.Before fall camp begins, the Athletic released a new outlook on the quarterback competitions, to take a look at where every Power Four program stands at the quarterback position with returners looking to leap in that role, or new transfers trying to find their footing within the roster.The Florida Gators have both Tramell Jones Jr. and Aaron Philo; let's see how they stack up against each other heading into camp.Aaron Philo is perceived to have the advantage within the quarterback competition due to him following his offensive coordinator from Georgia Tech to Florida, but Philo has yet to start a full season or put enough film on tape to be anointed the favorite outside of that. In his career so far, Philo has 938 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and three interceptions. The premise of the Golden State Warriors involvement in LeBron James free agency was very simple:The Warriors employ Stephen Curry, who is one of the greatest players in NBA history and the single biggest reason they have won four NBA championships in the last 12 years.Even as the Warriors have faded from their dynastic heights since defeating the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals, Curry has repeatedly expressed his interest in continuing to play meaningful basketball as he continues to play at an All-NBA level into his late 30s.No player on the market better represented a shot at the Warriors playing meaningful basketball next season than James.Well, then, lets try to go get him.Spoiler alert for those whove been trapped under something heavy for the last 72 hours: They didnt get him. LeBron chose the Philadelphia 76ers, a sentence on par with The New York Knicks really are the defending NBA champions for how simultaneously jarring and accurate it is.Now what, Warriors? (Mark J. But it might not have hurt anybody more than Golden State, arguably the biggest loser of the whole saga, both for losing out on adding James and for what coming up short in his decision-making calculus represented about the current state of play in the Bay, with the Warriors coming off a 37-45 finish with the NBAs No. 19 offense and No. 16 defense, unable to advance out of the play-in tournament, and entering next season with two starting wings superstar Jimmy Butler and stalwart Moses Moody still on the shelf rehabilitating their respective season-endingleg injuries.The Warriors didnt appear to be anywhere close to good enough without LeBron for him to convince himself theyd be championship-caliber with him. Its a bitter pill, but one that Curry has had to swallow, as he told Marcus Thompson III of The Athletic, who caught up with the two-time Most Valuable Player at teammate Moodys youth basketball camp in Arkansas:The through line, [Curry] said, which is hard on anybody in this situation, especially with us keeping this thing together, is knowing that when Jimmy got hurt and Moses got hurt, the whole calculus of everything changes. How do you get through their absence and still stay at a certain level? And then how that goes into this year. Its the same deal. So, Im a realist on that. [...]And you hope that they both [Butler and Moody] come back healthy, Curry said, and we can play at a level that keeps us relevant and competitive and builds a foundation so that we can figure out what it looks like. But that is the situation. We dont live in any alternative universe.It was pleasant to imagine inhabiting that universe. One in which, with Draymond Green opting out to open up more room to maneuver, James decided to run back his 2024 Summer Olympics partnership with Curry. One in which Warriors lead executive Mike Dunleavy Jr. was able to find one or two more complementary pieces to round out the roster, fortifying it enough to be able to survive the 82-game marathon and scratch out enough wins to earn a top-six seed in the West. One in which head coach Steve Kerr was able to keep the core of James, Curry, Green, Kristaps Porziis and Al Horford mostly intact, and Butler returned healthy midstream, and this senescent squad could enter springtime with reason to believe it could solve any problem an opponent might present them in the postseason.That story, though, evidently never gained much traction with LeBron. The Warriors were also appealing for a time, a source close to James told ESPNs Ramona Shelburne but only if they acquired a proven star forward like Washington Wizards' forward Anthony Davis, with whom James had won a title in 2020. And with multiple reports insisting that Washington never expressed interest in moving Davis before hed ever played a game for the franchise, that particular pathway was never really viable for the Warriors if theyd even seriously considered taking it.Ultimately, when he interrogated his motivations for continuing his career, James settled on his own definition of meaningful basketball: namely, the destination that would provide him the best chance of winning a fifth NBA championship. Reasonable people can disagree over whether the talent that will surround James in Philadelphia nets out to a higher potential ceiling than the collections in Northeast Ohio or Biscayne Bay. There doesnt seem to be any disagreement, though, about why the Warriors would finish a distant fourth in that race.Yes, Stephs as compelling a co-star as any individual player other suitors could offer. Look beyond him, though, and the Warriors roster is heavy on older players with injury concerns, degraded production or both, and light on bankable young talent who can be relied upon to bridge the gap to what comes next. Golden States best young players are Brandin Podziemski and Gui Santos, quality contributors who are still well south of an All-NBA selection like Tyrese Maxey, and perhaps 2026 first-round pick Yaxel Lendeborg, a 23-year-old who has yet to play a second of regular-season NBA basketball.These are the wages of years of missed opportunities. Of the failures of the two timelines era, whether to find ways to develop James Wiseman and Jonathan Kuminga into players who could become bona fide long-term contributors, or to just draft different players who might have been better suited to shine in Kerrs system. (LaMelo Ball and Franz Wagner were the picks immediately after Wiseman and Kuminga, respectively; Tyrese Haliburton and Trey Murphy III went 10 picks later, respectively.)Of the miserable Green/Jordan Poole incident, which led to the Warriors flipping a 23-year-old 20-point scorer for 58 games of Chris Paul, and paying a protected 2030 first-round pick and a 2027 second to do so. Of the myriad reported pursuits of starry veteran additions over the last half-dozen years Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby from the rebooting Raptors, Giannis Antetokounmpo amid his discontent in Milwaukee, Lauri Markkanen as the Jazz rebuilt, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard as the Clippers pivoted, and on, and on that never actually got across the finish line, for one reason or another. Of the one that did the Butler deal, which totally transformed the Warriors (and Steph himself) on the court running aground before it could bear postseason fruit, thanks to a pair of miserableinjuries.Come up empty that many times, and not even the magic of Curry now 38, now plagued by runners knee, now having missed significant time in two of the last four seasons is enough to sell a realistic path back toward championship contention. And without that, all thats left, as Ann Killion of the San Francisco Chronicle put it, is another summer of treading water and waiting for Butler and Moody to heal, for Dunleavy and Co. to find another swing they deem worth taking, and for a reason to believe not just that the best of the West have passed them by, but that the product the Warriors put on the court will be worthy of fans investment and attention.At this point in the offseason, with the bulk of the free-agent signings and wheeling-and-dealing likely concluded, its unclear whether that product will be meaningfully augmented for next season. Especially if the Warriors, who have full control over six of their next seven first-round picks, are reluctant to pony up the kind of draft capital it might take to lock down a deal that might move the needle now at the expense of having the flexibility to build up the roster down the line.What [owner Joe] Lacob wants to do and this might get Warriors fans mad is he wants to build the next team after Steph Curry, longtime Warriors reporter Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard said on his podcast, The TK Show, during a discussion of whether Lacob might want to sell the team in the years to come. I dont know how possible that is. But Lacob has a very keen interest in, Im going to show, or this organizations going to show what it can do with Steph Curry and then after Steph Curry. I dont think its going to be as good, myself, but thats what he wants to do.In the meantime, Curry told Thompson hes hopeful for all the creative ideas of getting the best team possible an all-time player keeping his fingers crossed that the front office and ownership to whom hes entrusted the twilight years of his Halleys-comet career. But hope isnt a plan, and its damn sure not a superstar forward; and so, for now, all Steph, the Warriors, and the untold millions of fans hes brought to the franchise over the past decade and a half can do is wait.Thats why you dont envision anything until it happens, Curry told Thompson. Theres a lot of moving parts.And, unfortunately, not much motion for a team that has been, and continues to be, stuck.

Cincinnati Reds utilityman Spencer Steer figured to be a popular target before MLBs Aug. 3 trade deadline for teams seeking a right-handed power bat. However, interest in Steer may be subdued after he was placed on the injured list with a right wrist sprain. The Reds announced the move on Monday. The fifth-year major-leaguer is expected to miss significant time, ESPNs Buster Olney reports. Steer, 28, left Sundays 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the fifth inning after reaching to foul off a pitch from Kyle Leahy. Well get him looked at, well get him imaged, and then theyre setting up an appointment with the hand specialist.Prior to his injury, Steer registered a .238/.319/.421 slash line with 16 home runs, 14 doubles and 40 RBI in 98 games. In addition to his power, Steer can play a variety of positions around the field. This season, hes mostly played first base (48 games), but also seen significant time in left field (30), right field (27) and second base (16). Yahoo Sports Russell Dorsey ranked Steer 20th among his top 25 trade candidates, citing his versatility and his consistent power. If there's one thing that makes Steer a unique trade candidate this year, it's that he's the only player on the list who can play any position you need. Steer has been every bit of a utilityman during his time with the Reds, playing every position except catcher at least once since 2022. And if you gave him a few days to learn, he could probably catch, too.Steer has hit 20 or more home runs during his previous three seasons and has a career .421 slugging percentage. Additionally, any team that acquired Steer would have him under club control for two more seasons after this one with two remaining years of arbitration eligibility. He and the Reds settled on a $4 million salary before this season to avoid arbitration. Among the teams reportedly showing interest in Steer were the Seattle Mariners. The New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies are looking to add right-handed bats, according to reports. The Boston Red Sox can probably be scratched off that list after acquring Curtis Mead from the Washington Nationals on Saturday.

Ahead of the MLB trade deadline on Aug. 3, there could be a battle in the Windy City for starting pitching. Multiple sources tell Yahoo Sports that both the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox have shown interest in Angels left-hander Reid Detmers. Detmers, who is 3-7 with a 4.05 ERA in 21 starts this season, is one of the hot names on this years trade market and has generated plenty of interest around the league. Both Chicago teams are in need of starting pitching and have cast a wide net as they look for reinforcements.The White Sox have gotten significant production from right-handers Davis Martin and Sean Burke, who are both having career years. But with an opportunity to win the AL Central in front of them, the White Sox are looking for additional depth and production. They have not only one of the youngest rosters in baseball but one of the youngest rotations as well. Detmers, with two more years of club control, fits the window of the teams young core.As the Sox look to add starting pitching, acquiring arms with experience in the postseason is something the club is factoring in as well. That means that while controllable starting pitching is a plus for the White Sox, adding a rotation rental isnt completely off the table. Someone such as San Francisco Giants left-hander Robbie Ray would make sense. The White Sox have also been intrigued by New York Mets right-hander Clay Holmes.The Cubs, meanwhile, have been one of the most injury-riddled teams in baseball this season, dealing with significant injuries to their rotation. Many of the teams top starters have missed time while on the injured list, including the loss of right-hander Cade Horton to season-ending elbow surgery and Justin Steeles prolonged rehab after Tommy John surgery in spring 2025. Right-handers Ben Brown and Edward Cabrera are currently on the 15-day IL.Even so, the Cubs are in win-now mode this season, and if theres starting pitching to be had, they will be looking to acquire it over the next week.As for the Angels, theres still some uncertainty about their plans for the deadline. The team is just a few weeks into the tenure of interim general manager John Mozeliak, following the firing of Perry Minasian. The belief around the industry is that the Angels will ultimately be sellers, but the extent to which theyll sell is still unclear.Detmers is one of the few starting pitchers on this years trade market with multiple years of club control remaining. The Angels southpaw, who is just 27, wouldnt be a free agent until after the 2028 season. His Angels rotationmate, Jos Soriano, is another arm with club control who is potentially available.Expect the Chicago teams to leave no stone unturned in their quest to add starting pitching over the final week before the trade deadline.Brewers lurking, with focus on bolstering the rotationIf theres one team that could do something big at the trade deadline, it's the Milwaukee Brewers. Rival executives believe that because of Milwaukees highly regarded farm system, it should not be taken lightly as an aggressive buyer at this deadline. And when it comes to the talent and depth needed to make a move for the likes of Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, the Brewers have both.Starting pitching is always part of Milwaukees identity and has been one of the teams biggest strengths this year. Behind NL Cy Young Award front-runner Jacob Misiorowski and breakout left-hander Kyle Harrison, Milwaukee has two strong pieces of a postseason rotation. But sources tell Yahoo Sports that Milwaukee, which currently boasts baseballs second-best record, is scanning the market for another playoff-caliber arm as they prepare for another push to the postseason.Even after 12-game losing streak, Marlins not in full sell modeEntering the month of July, the Marlins were flying high. Having gone 20-6 in the month of June (the best record in MLB that month), it appeared that for the first time in a long time, the Marlins were going to be deadline buyers. But unfortunately for Miami, things have changed rapidly over the past three weeks. Entering play Monday, the Marlins have lost a franchise-record 12 games in a row, getting swept in their past four series dating to July 10.But even after their rough July, the Marlins are just three games back in the NL wild-card race and are not expected to be pure sellers. According to sources, the team is in position to be nimble and would sell or buy if an opportunity to add to their core for the future emerges.The Marlins have several pieces that could be attractive for teams looking for bullpen help, including Calvin Faucher, Pete Fairbanks, Michael Petersen, John King and Anthony Bender. The two most intriguing names in the Marlins pen are Bender (2.62 ERA in 35 appearances) and King (2.43 ERA in 41 appearances), who both have a year of club control after this season.While other teams have shown interest in the Marlins breakout stars, NL All-Star shortstop Otto Lopez and second baseman Xavier Edwards, neither player is expected to be moved.The Freddy Peralta problemIt has been an absolute nightmare season for Freddy Peralta and the New York Mets. Once expected to be the next ace in Queens, Peralta has been anything but ace-like this season. The Mets are going to be sellers at the trade deadline, but even in a market starving for starting pitching, Peralta might not be the easiest to move.Simply put, the 30-year-old right-hander is having the worst season of his career. He is currently 5-9 with a 4.99 ERA in 22 starts this season. And things havent gotten any better lately, as the Mets right-hander has a whopping 7.92 ERA over his past seven starts.Normally, when a contender acquires a starter at the trade deadline, that team is expecting that arm to make a start for them in the postseason. But any contending team evaluating Peralta has to ask themselves: Which version of him would we be acquiring? In his career, Peralta has made six postseason starts with a 4.32 postseason ERA. But given his poor results over the past month and with confidence in him clearly wavering, adding him might represent one of the biggest gambles at this year's trade deadline.
