SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIs McInnes era giving Rangers fans fewer fears of failure? The Derek McInnes era at Rangers kicks off with a Scottish Premiership curtain-raiser at Dundee United on Friday (20:00 BST) [SNS]The climactic end to the Scottish Premiership, coupled with the summer of football and managerial upheaval that followed, has made it somewhat easy to forget that Rangers finished last term third.A lot has happened since head coach Danny Rohl, who has been replaced by Derek McInnes, watched his team limp to the finish after their season unravelled in a post-split collapse. The memories of the Ibrox side's demanding fanbase are not that short, though. They are expecting far better from a club that followed up a reported 40m spending spree with a second successive trophyless season. But as the McInnes era prepares to kick into gear, are those same supporters heading into the new campaign with fewer reasons to fear more failure? How many midfielders do Rangers need after busy summer?Holders St Mirren visit Rangers in League Cup last 16Who has your Premiership club brought in & let go this summer?McInnes the man to stabilise turbulence? It was only a year ago that Russell Martin had just started his troublesome 17-match reign as Rangers head coach. Now Leicester City boss, Martin was sacked after a brutal end to his brief spell. And after dragging the side back into the Premiership title fight before it all went wrong, Rohl too has been and gone, leaving for Red Bull Salzburg in June. The nature of Rangers' end to last season - their hopes ending with four straight post-split defeats - meant Rohl would have been up against it with the fans on day one of the 2026-27 campaign.Any credit the German had banked was diminished and a stuttering start to the new season would inevitably have led to the familiar social media meme poking fun at the vicious Rangers cycle once again reaching the managerial departure stage.A "mutual agreement" that resulted in Rohl heading to Salzburg should help the Ibrox club avoid the recent trend of ripping everything up and starting again in the autumn, with McInnes tasked with taking the team forward. Some have viewed the former Aberdeen boss, who turned down interest from Rangers in 2017, as a sensible appointment for years, while others have had doubts. But taking Hearts to within about 10 minutes of a historic Scottish top-flight title went some way to unifying the view that the 55-year-old is now the right man."The timing's perfect," former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday told BBC Scotland. "McInnes will probably admit himself he's now a more well-rounded manager than he was back in 2017."He's been through a title race, he's had ups and downs throughout that, so I think he's in the best possible place to take the job on. It's just a natural fit."In Old Firm fan speak, boyhood Rangers fan McInnes 'gets it', having played at Ibrox from 1995 to 2000.He won league and cup silverware during that spell but supporters will still harbour concerns about his ability to win big as a manager. His only major honour across two decades in the dugout was the 2014 League Cup with Aberdeen, won on penalties after a goalless draw with Inverness Caledonian Thistle.Figurehead in dugout and Shankland spearheading attackLawrence Shankland had a combined 117 goal contributions in 171 games for Hearts [SNS]Only evidence will win over every doubter within Rangers' support, who have also lamented the lack of a figurehead during a tumultuous period of managerial upheaval.Since Steven Gerrard's 2021 exit, appointments have been perceived by some more as project coaches but the Ibrox club have made it clear McInnes arrives as a manager, not a head coach.A lack of leadership on the pitch has also come under scrutiny, with James Tavernier regularly the fall guy. That criticism was arguably often unfair but the long-serving right-back departed this summer, vacating the captaincy and leaving a void to fill. Experienced goalkeeper Jack Butland has also left.McInnes does not shy away from the fact he wants a Scottish core running through his squads and the arrivals of Lawrence Shankland and Ross McCrorie - also boyhood fans of the club - have strengthened the local contingent.Rangers great Allan McGregor, who knows the club inside out, has also been brought back as goalkeeping coach.Shankland, meanwhile, joins as a leader after captaining Hearts - as does former Sunderland skipper Dan Neil - but the Scotland striker also arrives as a seasoned Premiership scorer, having netted 88 goals in four years at Tynecastle.Rangers fans and connected pundits had been crying out for the club to sign the striker long before he joined this summer.Shrewd business has finally delivered the man the supporters have been desperate for to lead the line. Another box ticked?"As a Rangers striker, hitting 20 goals should be the minimum," says Halliday, who played with Shankland at Hearts."If you look at the past few seasons, there have not been many Rangers number nines who have done that. "If the service is there for Shankland, he's as close to a guarantee as you can possibly get to a 20-goal-a-season striker."Excuses running dry as Rangers target titleHalliday says McInnes "knows the pressure cooker he's stepping into". It will be like nothing he has experienced in the dugout previously.Expectation may be high at Aberdeen and Hearts but the relentless need to win at the Old Firm is on another level. As a former Rangers player who was brought up supporting the club, he will be aware of that, although he will still have to convince some fans that he has what it takes to drive the side back to consistently winning major honours. An unknown quantity in Europe, having only managed in qualifiers, he will also have to navigate two ties to reach the Europa League proper, where Rangers have excelled in recent years. But it is domestic pressure that his post-Gerrard predecessors have shown signs of struggling with, whether that has meant dragging the team into title fights and falling at the final hurdle or failing to mount a serious challenge. On other occasions, the reality has been that they have been competing with a Celtic side boasting superior spending power and quality.Following the takeover of the club by a US-based consortium, who now face a potentially defining season, the financial argument has quietened somewhat after a supposed 40m spend last season.Despite the big backing, Martin immediately put himself on the back foot with an opening-day draw at Motherwell last August. Twelve months earlier, Philippe Clement did likewise in the first match of his first full season in charge, drawing at Hearts. The year before that, Michael Beale lost at Kilmarnock.A positive start in Friday's Premiership curtain-raiser at Dundee United is crucial for McInnes as excuses start to run dry.Rangers play six league games before travelling to Celtic in the campaign's first Old Firm encounter. Halliday believes Rangers have to be flawless in each of them."There have been too many cases in the past where Rangers have gone into the first Old Firm of the season feeling they have to win," he adds."It's imperative they win every game in the lead up to it this year."Visit our Rangers page for all the latest news, analysis and fan viewsGet Rangers news notifications in the BBC Sport app0 Comments 0 Shares 24 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPini Zahavi: “Lewandowski turned down 200 million in January to stay at Barcelona”Pini Zahavi: Lewandowski turned down 200 million in January to stay at BarcelonaRobert Lewandowski wanted to remain at Barcelona for another season, and club president Joan Laporta was equally keen for him to stay. That is according to the strikers agent, Pini Zahavi, who explained the circumstances behind Lewandowskis departure in an interview with Sebastian Staszewski for SportoweFakty (via SPORT).Zahavi discussed the reasons behind the forwards exit, the offers he received and why he ultimately chose to continue his career in Major League Soccer. He also suggested that Lewandowski could one day return to Barcelona in a different role, following a conversation with Laporta.Laporta wanted Lewandowski to stayZahavi, who maintains a close relationship with the Barcelona president, revealed that Laporta was eager for Lewandowski to remain at the club. You know that Joan Laporta adores him, really! And he wanted Robert to play at Camp Nou for one more year. I spoke to him about it in December, and he told me then: I want Robert to stay.'Lewandowski left Barcelona as a free agent. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)However, Laporta chose not to interfere with decisions being made by the sporting department and coaching staff.Theyre the ones who decide the squad. And they couldnt guarantee Robert a place in the starting eleven, which was more important to him than even the money, Zahavi explained.According to Zahavi, Lewandowskis desire to remain an important player ultimately influenced his decision to leave. You know him he always wants to play, to be a key player in the team. However, Deco and Hansi had different visions for Roberts future at Barcelona, so at a certain point we began to consider other options. From that moment, the strikers future gradually moved away from Camp Nou.Laporta: He saved BarcelonaDespite his departure, Zahavi insists the relationship between Lewandowski and Barcelona remains extremely positive. The agent revealed another conversation with Laporta that left a lasting impression. He said to me: Tell Robert that we want him. Hes part of our history the man who saved Bara. Do you get it? He saved Bara thats exactly what he said.Laporta adores Lewandowski. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)Those comments convinced Zahavi that Lewandowski would always have a place at the club.Thats why I believe that if he ever wants to work for Bara, therell be a place for him there, he added.Lewandowski rejected a 200 million Saudi offerThe Polish striker had the opportunity to leave Barcelona several months earlier but chose not to.Zahavi disclosed that in January this year Lewandowski received a two-year offer from Saudi Arabia worth 100 million per season. In January 2026, Robert had a two-year offer on the table worth 100 million euros per season, explained the agent. When asked why the proposal was rejected, Zahavi gave a straightforward answer.Because he wanted to play for Barcelona.Chicago Fire chapterLewandowski was never interested in moving to England, Germany or France. Within Europe, Barcelona remained the only club he was prepared to represent.A new chapter in the MLS. (Photo by Leonardo Fernandez/Getty Images)In the end, he signed for MLS club Chicago Fire, who had been pursuing the veteran striker for over a year. The Fire executives fought harder than anyone else for him. It is rare for a club to want a player so much. They were patient, determined and creative. They did everything possible to convince Lewandowski. Everything, said Lewandowski.Lewandowski signed a two-year deal worth approximately $40 million in total. According to Zahavi, it is the second-highest contract in the league, behind only Lionel Messis.Zahavi believes Lewandowski can have a transformative impact similar to the one he made after arriving at Barcelona during a difficult period for the club. When Lewy arrived at Barcelona, they were in a critical situation, with serious financial problems. But Robert took the risk and helped them return to the top. I believe he can follow a similar path with the Fire.0 Comments 0 Shares 22 Views 0 Reviews
