In Driver's Eye with James Hinchcliffe, the six-time INDYCAR winner will bring you inside the mind of a racer while breaking down the nuts and bolts of the sport for fans. When you think of success in INDYCAR in the last half decade, you think of one name: Alex Palou. He joined the series as a relative unknown, was plucked seemingly out of obscurity from racing in Japan by Dale Coyne and has been nearly unstoppable ever since. His rookie season has some moments that certainly gave you the sense that he had some big potential. But even the most ambitious of predictions wouldnt have landed on what the future would hold for the now-29-year-old Spaniard. Since joining Chip Ganassi Racing, he has been on the podium more than 50% of the time. He has won 24 races, four titles and an Indianapolis 500. If he is able to pull off five championships in six seasons, it will be unlike anything weve ever seen in the modern era of INDYCAR racing. Dario Franchitti, a legend with a Hall of Fame career, won four titles in five years, but most of that success came in the second half of his career. Where Palou is in his driving days, the sky is the limit and the record books are getting ready for a reprint. When an athlete is performing at such a high level, people take notice. Especially other athletes. Even Tom Brady one of the greatest athletes of all time was taken by this level of success, and asked Townsend Bell and me last year what makes this Palou guy so good? The simple truth is there is no one thing, but a confluence of traits that make him so devastatingly effective. WHAT MAKES ALEX PALOU SO CONSISTENTLY DOMINANT? An abundance of unique traits and unparalleled factors aligned to make Palou and his Chip Ganassi Racing crew so seemingly unstoppable. But three stand out to me. First, racing is a team sport, as Ive discussed in this column. Palou wasnt winning titles with Dale Coyne Racing, so credit needs to go to CGR for giving Palou the tools he needs to be so dominant. That means great race cars, near-faultless strategy calls, mistake-free pit stops, as well as the ability to learn from both the teams and his teammates (namely, six-time champ Scott Dixon) vast experience of how to keep getting better. Next up is his work ethic. This is something that you hear a lot from standout performers in any given sport. Its certainly something Brady was accused of in his playing days. You talk to the team, and they cant say enough about Palous relentless quest to improve and perfect. The truth is, you can never run a perfect race. Or have a perfect weekend. Even if you win from pole and lead every lap, something, somewhere in the weekend could have been executed better. Palou, win or lose, never stops chasing that perfection. He spends hours training physically, training mentally, pouring over data and video trying to find any little weakness that he can improve on. He is simply outworking many of his rivals. Finally in the sense of this column, because trust me, there are more than three things! is his temperament. Palou is as cool a customer under pressure as anyone Ive ever seen. Dixon was always known as the Iceman for his unflappable demeanor, but its like Palou saw that template, and said, "Hold my beer." Whether he is cruising to a win out front or in the thick of an on-track battle, his radio communications are always the same: cool, calm and collected. Even when things go wrong be it a mechanical issue or another driver taking him out his heart rate never goes up, his approach never changes. He simply operates in his best window at all times. Its arguably the most impressive thing he does and the most difficult for others to replicate. When we, up in the booth, watch him take the lead in a race you werent expecting him to, you cant help but admire what youre watching. We all love the unpredictability of INDYCAR. But I love watching history be made, and right now, we are witnessing sports history. SOUND LIKE AN INDYCAR EXPERT: SCHUMACHER, F1 AND INDYCAR Switching disciplines in racing is a big ask. Gone are the days of drivers winning an INDYCAR race one week, being on a Formula 1 podium the next, then hitting a sprint-car race on a Thursday before tackling a 500-mile NASCAR race the following Sunday. Each discipline is so specialized now that making the transition from one to another often requires a period of adjustment. And that is what Mick Schumacher is facing in his rookie INDYCAR campaign. Yes, F1 and INDYCAR are about as close as you can get when switching series, but even still the differences are massive. The type of car, tires and track are vastly different and require a completely different skill set. Every one of these tracks is new to Schumacher, and with the way weekends run, there really isnt a ton of track time. A lot of your learning as a rookie comes during the race itself. If he could start the weekends with the knowledge he has by the end of them, it would be a very different result. Coming off his first top-10 finish of the season at Nashville Superspeedway, you cant help but think that he would have liked to reach that milestone sooner in the season. That said, apart from team leader Graham Rahals string of podiums, strong results have been hard to come by for the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing squad in general. And lets not forget that highly rated and recently re-signed to a multi-year deal Louis Foster didnt manage to achieve a top-10 finish with RLL in his first season on the big stage. With news of RLL downsizing from three cars to two, and the belief being it is Schumachers No. 47 program that is falling away, the hope is that Mick will be able to land somewhere else for 2027. Then, he could return to each track armed with the knowledge and experience of 2026 and show what his true potential is. 1 FOR THE ROAD The teams and drivers are enjoying their final off weekend before the final stretch of the season that covers six races in five weeks. It will be a marathon stint for the collective paddock and can certainly test the mental resolve of every member of a team. Keeping your cool and focus over that run can make or break a season. Momentum is a real thing, but it works both upward and downward. A bad start to this stretch can spiral a program out of control. The conclusion of All-Star Weekend officially heralds the second half of the WNBA season. Every team has between 15 (congrats, Seattle Storm!) and 18 games remaining to close out the 2026 campaign. If the first half of the season taught us anything with the Minnesota Lynx rocketing to the top of the standings without Napheesa Collier, Marina Mabrey tying Aja Wilsons single-game scoring record and more expect the remaining two months to be filled with the unexpected.With that in mind, its still a fun time to try to predict what will happen the rest of the way. Go easy on me I may not have done a 72-hour livestream over the last weekend, but were all still coming out of the All-Star haze.The eight playoff teams are already setFour losses separate the No. 8 seed Washington Mystics from the Portland Fire, Toronto Tempo and Los Angeles Sparks, and the preseason playoff hopeful Chicago Sky and Phoenix Mercury are another two losses behind. Generally speaking, teams can make up about one game per week in the standings, so there is enough time for one of the five other teams to climb into the playoff picture. With Kiki Rice and Kelsey Plum on the way back, the Tempo and Sparks can point to improved health as a reason for their fortunes to turn, and the Sky have a better net rating than the Mystics this season, so theyre playing well enough outside of clutch situations to qualify for the postseason.But the bet here is that Washington will still make the top eight. The Mystics have an easier remaining schedule than the rest of this field, and they have less incentive to tank since they have a pick swap with Chicago in the 2027 WNBA Draft. The playoff teams will be the Lynx, Mystics, Golden State Valkyries, Las Vegas Aces, Dallas Wings, Indiana Fever, Atlanta Dream and New York Liberty.Connecticut Sun will finish with the top lottery oddsThe race to the bottom doesnt figure to be any more competitive. Connecticut and Chicago are within one game of each other for the worst two-year record (which is what determines the lottery odds), but the Sky dont control their pick and thus will keep trying to win games. Toronto and Portland have won too many games already, though the Fire could slip a bit without Sarah Ashlee Barker available for the second half of the season, and Seattle and Phoenix are carrying over too many wins from 2025, when they both made the playoffs.If I were in the Sun front office, Id still be wary of winning too many games and inadvertently letting Chicago (but actually Washington) slide ahead in the draft order. But Connecticut doesnt have to tank; the Sun can comfortably play out the rest of the regular season without worrying about sacrificing their odds at the No. 1 pick, even if that player suits up in Houston after the franchise relocates.Indiana will take a swing at the deadlineWNBA teams are generally reluctant to make midseason moves eight in-season trades have taken place over the last two seasons, one of which didnt even involve two active players and Indiana hasnt made a deadline deal since 2023. But the Fever have an important window to capitalize on this season: Kelsey Mitchell will be a free agent this offseason, Aliyah Bostons contract will jump from $1 million (about 14 percent of the cap) to a 20 percent supermax in 2027, and Caitlin Clark will also be eligible for a supermax raise. Indiana might not have a better chance to win a title than in 2026, before it reaches a financial cliff.The Fever are already right up against the cap this season, so a deal will be challenging enough, but seeking out a power forward upgrade like Nneka Ogwumike, Dearica Hamby or Satou Sabally would be useful, even if they have to part with Raven Johnson and/or some picks to do so.The Lynx are usually the team that makes midseason trades; they acquired rotation players Myisha Hines-Allen and DiJonai Carrington at the last two deadlines. However, Collier, whos on her way back, is a better in-season addition than any player Minnesota could bring in via trade.Aja Wilson will break the single-season scoring recordWilson already holds the single-season scoring record total points and average which was set in 2024 when she scored 26.87 points per game and was the unanimous MVP. Shes currently averaging 26.1 points this season and could break her mark by averaging 28 points for the remaining 18 games. The Aces have a better offensive rating than they did that season and are averaging more points (91.0) as a team, so the situation is favorable for Wilson to score a lot of points. Perhaps more importantly, Las Vegas defense has been terrible of late, which has necessitated higher offensive outputs look at the last game before the All-Star break, when Wilson scored 38 and still wasnt enough because the Aces allowed the Mystics to put up 100.Dominique Malonga will dunk in a gameThe second-year Seattle center made dunking look easy during the All-Star Game, and now that she has that one under her belt (plus a couple of dunks at Unrivaled), it should be easier to throw one down during a Storm game. Malonga always runs the floor hard, giving her opportunities to dunk in transition. Its easier for her to leak out when she is guarding a perimeter player, and that happens more often when she is playing next to Awa Fam. Though it probably isnt fair to say Seattle wont be playing games of consequence in the second half, the Storm will likely be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention well before the season ends. Those games tend to be a little looser, allowing Malonga to experiment more than she would otherwise.Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will be suspended for technical foul accumulationClark and Reese are sitting at seven technical fouls apiece, with the next one resulting in a suspension. Clark went about a month without a tech before picking up two in back-to-back games, and Reese hasnt gone more than two weeks in between technicals this season. Although both players are in tight playoff positioning battles, its unrealistic to expect they can each make it another six weeks without getting whistled again; Clark has said she doesnt want to change the way she plays to avoid technical fouls because it might hinder her performance. At this rate, its more likely Clark will incur a second suspension for 10 techs rather than going the rest of the season without another one. As Fever coach Stephanie White said, Clark can probably pick which games she wants to sit out and preemptively get suspended for what its worth, the Fever have a back-to-back on Aug. 22 and 23, and the second game is against the Sky.Cleveland will officially brand itself as the Cleveland RockersWith more than a year and a half remaining until Cleveland tips off for the 2028 season, there is no rush for the expansion franchise to decide on a name. But when it does and the organization appears to be further along than other expansion teams making a nod to the citys history seems like the play. In the WNBA, whats old is new. The Portland fan base has latched on to the old Fire moniker, and the Houston Comets return in 2027 after the Connecticut Sun relocate south. The things that will grab our attention from the start of training camp to the end?We detailed what those topics are and why they matter.Trevor Lawrence and Brian Thomas Jr.'s connectionLawrence and Thomas building their chemistry has been a focal point all offseason, and that emphasis appears to be working. Thomas had a very good showing during offseason programs, while Lawrence continued to push the ball downfield -- another offseason priority. Thomas will fill other roles, but he very much brings a vertical presence to this offense. An improved connection between him and Lawrence on those downfield throws won't only generate more big plays, but the attention that Thomas draws can open up opportunities for others in the passing game. - Paul BretlNate Boerkircher's role and impact on the Jaguars' offenseThe Jaguars' decision to draft Nate Boerkircher in the second round was highly criticized, with most analysts stopping just short of calling him a draft bust. He had some impressive performances in minicamp, however, and it's been made clear that Boerkircher was always Jacksonville's top choice. Training camp, then, will be the first chance to vindicate Boerkircher and, by extension, the Jaguars.There is no denying that Boerkircher was an excellent blocking tight end in college; in fact, he was one of the best available. However, how that playing time breaks down remains to be seen.Tuten is the presumed RB1, with Liam Coen mentioning recently that he is expecting a "big year" from him. Rodriguez brings added physicality to the backfield and has been quite good at making defenders miss. Allen will continue to see the field on more obvious passing downs.An improved run game will help elevate the Jaguars' offense in 2026. That not only falls on the shoulders of the running backs, but on the offensive line as well. - Paul BretlTravis Hunter's returnHow will Travis Hunter perform after suffering a season-ending knee injury last year, and where will he contribute most? Those have been the two biggest questions surrounding the Jaguars' most talked-about player throughout the offseason, and training camp will be the first chance to answer both.Hunter notoriously was a two-way player in college, and excelled as both a cornerback and a wide receiver. He also openly expressed his intention to continue playing both in the NFL, something Jacksonville has continued to say as well. During his rookie season, he was used primarily as a wide receiver, taking fewer snaps on defense than on offense. His sophomore year, it is expected the reverse will be true, with Hunter serving as a full-time cornerback who still sees snaps on offense. No one has officially confirmed this, though, so it remains for now just an expectation. Training camp will give the first glimpse into how the team plans to use him in 2026, and how well he has bounced back from injury. - Casandra ChesserJaguars pass rushLeading the way will be Travon Walker and Josh Hines-Allen, but around those two, the Jaguars need more pass rush consistency from both the defensive end and defensive tackle positions this season. In 2025, theJaguarsrankeda modest 18th in pressure rate in 2025 and 27th in sacks as a defense.At defensive end, Jacksonville is relying on several relatively inexperienced players to provide the rotation a boost. At tackle, Arik Armstead was quite productive through the first half of last season, but a hand injury slowed his production down the stretch. It remains to be seen what kind of impact Ruke Orhorhoro can have as a pass rusher.Getting after the quarterback is the name of the game.
