I cant argue with the final results.We recently asked Monroe News readers to vote for the best male and female athletes in Monroe County Region history.Its an impossible task because there is no right answer.Speaking of thankless jobs, I was asked to come up with a list of candidates for an online poll.More: Who is the greatest male athlete in Monroe County Region history?More: Was a professional baseball player the Region's best female athlete? More: Airport's Tilley and Irwin headline 2026 All-Region softball teamI turned to my friend and former colleague Doug Donnelly for help. He is the premier historian of Monroe County Region sports.Originally, we were going to have a list of 20 males and 20 females.It quickly expanded to 25.Then 30.Finally, we halted it at 35.Why 35?Honestly, I dont know.The line just had to be drawn somewhere.We could have expanded it to 50 or 100 and there still would have been worthy candidates that got left out.Some didnt make the cut.Others were simply missed.For instance, one reader messaged me to ask, Did you forget Cheyenne Cousineau?I could only respond by saying yes. She somehow failed to emerge from my faulty memory banks.The Bedford graduate absolutely belonged on the list of candidates.She was the Monroe County Region Girls Diver of the Year four times from 2006-09, a three-time state champion, earned a full scholarship to Ohio State, was a Big Ten champion in 2012, placed third at the NCAA finals, competed in the United States Olympic Trials twice, was a U.S. national champion and finished seventh at the World Cup.Somehow, I missed her when assembling the candidates.And she wasnt the only great athlete overlooked.Another reader suggested Deb Rollman should have been considered.She was a five-tool player before the phrase was invented, one of her former Bedford teammates wrote of the woman who helped Texas A&M win an NCAA softball championship and finish as national runner-up twice.Another e-mailer insisted that Dundee star and current minor-league baseball player Zach Fruit belonged on the list of candidates.Someone else said I missed Mark German. The problem there was that while German gained fame as Bedfords athletic director, he never played in the Region.He was a standout at Bronson High School and the University of Toledo.Surprisingly, there were only a few of the people who alerted me about possible omissions.I told all of them the same thing.I have a love-hate relationship with this kind of project.Yes, polls like this are great for stirring debate and getting readers involved, but I always agonize over missing deserving candidates and hurting feelings.The positives seem to outweigh the negatives.People enjoyed the project.There were 19,014 votes cast in the female poll and 17,039 in the male vote.Jackson Lamb of Bedford and New Boston Hurons Elizabeth Anderson emerged as the winners.Both were excellent choices.Lamb was the Region Player of the Year twice in baseball and once in basketball. He went on to become a star at the University of Michigan and twice was selected in the Major League Baseball draft.Each time he turned down offers from MLB teams and returned home to become an assistant coach at his alma mater.I was lucky enough to see the first points of Lambs high school basketball career.On an early December day in 2009, the skinny freshman soared to snare an ally-oop pass off an inbounds play and slammed it through the hoop to silence a raucous crowd at St. Mary Catholic Centrals Brother Gerontius Memorial Gymnasium.It was a preview of the greatness to come.Anderson was one of the greatest track and field sprinters Ive ever seen in person. She made it look effortless with her signature upright running style.She won two state championships in the 400 meters and one in the 200. The 2026 MLB Trade Deadline is August 3, and who goes where or stays put by 6 p.m. ET on Monday is tied to which teams win or lose until then.There isnt a team in any sport on any level on the planet that isnt wishing to improve. In that sense, all 30 MLB teams would like to be buyers adding better and more expensive players by Monday. Some simply do not have the talent needed to exchange or the money to pay in return, however. Those clubs would usually be classified as sellers seeking to cut payroll and add promising prospects in hopes of rebuilding for the future.Except that in 2026, the future could be now given the results of the next five days. The best possible prizes, pitchers Tarik Skubal and Mason Miller and shortstop C.J. Therefore, only six teams total are basically out of it and presumably more eager to be sellers of their best players.Yet if those best players were performing real well in 2026, those clubs would not be in the predicament of essentially saying sayonara, see you next year. Theres not a high demand for the cream of the tail-end crop.Its a classic catch-22 scenario which brings to mind a humorous anecdote. When asked why defensively-challenged Dick Stuart was nicknamed Catch 22 in the 1960s, a teammate replied, Because if you made 50 throws to him, hed catch 22.The odds should be higher that the majority of MLB teams will make a player move or two by the impending deadline. Except this year, determining who goes where is tougher than usual since clubs are traditionally unwilling to deal with a team it is battling in the standings. So in 2026, perhaps we should look for more trades involving AL and NL teams.Conversely, the Ill help you, since you are not in direct competition thinking may restrict the number of trades as it curtails the number of possibilities.It sounds undecisive, unpredictable and a bit screwy only because it is.Sellers, Buyers And Fence-SittersIn 2026, the Angels, Athletics, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Giants, Mets, Rockies and Royals appear to be most likely sellers. A couple other teams could join that group this weekend.Veteran infielder Luis Arraez is often mentioned as likely to be dealt by San Francisco despite his .326 batting average, second in the National League. The Giants (45-61) are 9.5 games out of a possible wild-card spot and Arraez is due to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027. A contender needing offense could want the three-time batting champion who since the end of 2022 has played for Minnesota, Miami, San Diego and San Francisco. The 35-year-old will be owed $7 million this year after the deadline. Since May 23, he is 0-7 to put his record at 4-10 as the defending AL champion Blue Jays are five games behind Cleveland for the final wild-card spot. In his loss streak, Gausman got only 14 runs (2.0 a game) of support. So a rival GM could figure, He is pitching well enough to win with us.Then again, if Toronto runs the table the next five days, the Blue Jays may be back in true contention and decide to add players. Its that close and questionable.Teams on the cusp of contending today could be out of it or on a winning streak by Monday. Sitting on the fence right now, contemplating various scenarios are the Marlins, Nationals, Orioles, Padres, Tigers and Twins.That leaves 16 buyers, though a bad five days by some of them could completely change their plans. A great stretch already altered the Boston Red Sox fortunes and thinking. A 15-game winning streak and 20-2 record from June 25 to July 22 took them from last place into solid playoff contention. The duo combined for 22 homers, 64 RBI and 22 stolen bases (19 in 19 tries by the hefty Naylor) as Seattle went from five games back to winning the AL West. The Braves and Cubs usually are pro-active, too, while the Brewers and Rays often seek more prospects in favor of paring payroll and increasing future forecasts.Milwaukee and Tampa Bay may jump into the foray this time. Both have minor-league systems loaded with prospects each accumulated at deadlines in recent years and could flip this time. Tampa Bay also has a new ownership group that gives the franchise the ability to put money where its wish list is for the first time.It is all too topsy-turvy to predict who is going to do what within the next five days both on the playing field and on the telephone wheeling and dealing. Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige once said, Aint no man can avoid being born average, but there aint no man that got to be common.
