ORLANDO Johnny Dawkins' legacy at Duke is assured, thanks to a pair of consensus first-team All-America honors, a National Player of the Year award in 1986 and his No. 24 jersey hanging in the rafters of Cameron Indoor Stadium.In the NBA, he averaged 11.1 points and 5.5 assists across nine seasons, and competed against the likes of Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins in the Slam Dunk Contest during the event's heyday. At Stanford, he brought a pair of NIT championships to Maples Pavilion and collected the fourth-most coaching wins in program history (156).Set to turn 63 in September and now a full decade into his tenure at UCF, and with another three years secured on a contract extension he signed at the end of May, Dawkins believes how he will be remembered in Orlando is still "to be determined.""I think we've done some amazing things here, but I think the best is still yet to come," Dawkins said July 22 in an exclusive one-on-one interview with The News-Journal. "I'm never satisfied on what I think we can do here with this program. My vision for us is one of championships. I haven't gotten our program to where we want to be yet because our standards are higher than what weve been accomplishing. We have to keep pushing until we move it to that goal of ours."The Knights achieved their second at-large NCAA Tournament bid in program history, their first since joining the Big 12 Conference three years ago, in 2026 but were eliminated by UCLA in a first-round matchup in Philadelphia. Terry Mohajir, UCF's vice president and director of athletics, rewarded Dawkins with a three-year extension worth $7.8 million.Last season appeared to be make-or-break for Dawkins, considering his salary $2.2 million at the time, per a term sheet provided by UCF Athletics was not guaranteed entering 2026-27 on his previous deal. Dawkins said he "never even thought about it" in those terms, and that staying along the Knights' sidelines was a fairly easy decision."I've known I always wanted to be a part of UCF, and I think they know that also through our commitment over the years. I think it speaks for itself," Dawkins said. "Fortunately, we've been around some amazing people, like our president (Alexander Cartwright) and our athletic director. And these guys have always been amazing to us, amazing for us to work with and for. They have the same type of vision that we have for our program and for all of our (athletic) programs here There is so much potential here that can be realized. Our university has been very supportive in trying to make that happen for all of us."Dawkins needs just 11 wins to join Torchy Clark and Kirk Speraw as the only coaches to reach 200 at UCF. He has notched 12 of the Knights' 14 all-time victories against ranked opponents, including three during the 2025-26 campaign alone (Kansas, Texas Tech and at BYU).The Knights will, once again, have an overhauled squad for the upcoming season due to heavy losses sustained both due to graduation and the NCAA transfer portal. Starting backcourt duo Themus Fulks and Riley Kugel turned pro; both signed with the Los Angeles Clippers as undrafted free agents to compete in the NBA Summer League. Forwards Jordan Burks (Oklahoma State) and Jamichael Stillwell (Texas Tech) transferred to rival Big 12 teams, pending the latter's lawsuit seeking a fifth year of eligibility.Junior center John Bol, however, is one of five Knights that finished last season with the program to return. The 7-foot-2, 235-pounder from South Sudan started all 33 games and averaged 5.9 points and 5.5 rebounds. Just a cool side note to add.Heading into 2026, the Jaguars will need to prove it wasnt a fluke. If they miss the playoffs, fans will write it off as just another failure by Floridas red-headed stepchild NFL franchise.So, who on the team will be under the most pressure? He also had two receiving touchdowns. That was in a backup role to Travis Etienne, who rushed for 1,107 yards and seven touchdowns on top of 292 receiving yards and six touchdowns.Tuten is expected to split time with free agent signee Chris Rodriguez Jr., but if Tuten can show consistent explosiveness, he could become the bell cow back.Tuten showed continued improvement throughout college.During his sophomore season at North Carolina A&T, he rushed for 1,363 yards on 208 carries with 13 touchdowns.He then transferred to Virginia Tech. During his junior year in 2023, Tuten started all 13 games and rushed 173 times for 863 yards and 10 touchdowns. As a senior, he rushed 183 times for 1,159 yards and 15 touchdowns.As he continues to progress through his NFL career, steady improvement will go a long way, and it all starts in 2026.Who has the most to gain?Im going with linebacker Ventrell Miller on this one.Heading into the 2026 season, Miller has a chance to make a noticeable impact if he can win the competition to start at the linebacker spot vacated by Devin Lloyd, who left for Carolina in free agency during the offseason.Miller was selected by the Jaguars with the 121st pick in the fourth round of the 2023 draft.He had durability issues in college at Florida, suffering through biceps, hamstring and multiple foot injuries. He also missed his entire rookie season after rupturing his right Achilles tendon.He played in all 17 games in 2026, starting two.Lets see if 17 starts is in his future in 2026.Who has the most to lose?Brian Thomas Jr. was one of the NFL's top receivers as a rookie in 2024, but took a lot of criticism in 2025.He was plagued by drop problems early in the year, and despite a better second half, he still finished with just 48 receptions for 707 yards and two touchdowns.That was a year after a rookie record-setting 2024 when he had 1,282 and 10 touchdowns.Thomas is looking to prove the doubters wrong while also positioning himself for the future.Hes heading into the third of his four-year rookie contract worth $14,659,978. He would love to see his fifth-year option exercised, which should be worth more than his first four years combined. That must be done by May 2027.If he falls flat again, his value may tank. Not only did he amass 42 receptions for 462 yards and three touchdowns in nine games, he drew enough defensive attention that Parker Washington, Brenton Strange and the rest of the Jaguars offense was able to thrive.Meyers is a great route runner, has excellent hands and has had more than 800 receiving yards in each of the past five seasons.You could see the connection between Meyers and Trevor Lawrence grow as the season went on.Now, with a full season together, this should be the time for Meyers to find career highs in receiving yards and touchdowns.
