Storm apologize after co-owners interaction with fans supporting Sophie Cunningham
The Seattle Storm apologized Wednesday for an interaction involving a team co-owner during Tuesdays game against the Indiana Fever. The team did not specify what the exchange was, but podcast host Brandi Kruse shared a video Tuesday night of two teenage girls wearing shirts depicting XX and XY chromosomes saying Storm minority owner Celeste Keaton approached them, cursed and called them insane. The game between the Storm and Fever was Indianas first since guard Sophie Cunningham said in an ESPN article that its common sense to bar transgender athletes from competing in womens sports.Kruse also shared a photo of the girls holding up a sign courtside that read, Thank you Sophie for speaking up for girls. Before the game, a small group of fans gathered outside Seattles Climate Pledge Arena holding signs in support of Cunningham, according to The Associated Press.Everyone who attends a Storm game deserves to feel welcome, and we remain committed to creating an inclusive environment where every fan is treated with respect, Storm majority owner Ginny Gilder said in the teams apology. In addition to the apology, the WNBA suspended Keaton from attending the Storms next five home games and fined the team an undisclosed amount, the league confirmed Thursday. In response to a post about the apology, Cunningham wrote on X late Wednesday: Truly embarrassing of the co-owner. Unfortunately shows the type of leader she is.She added: I truly believe there is a safe space and love for EVERYBODY. Biological girls, biological boys, trans women, and trans men. Everyone is welcome at my table! You can disagree and still be kind. The social media post was Cunninghams first comment since the publication of the ESPN article. After Indiana won Tuesdays game, the team did not make Cunningham or star guard Caitlin Clark available to speak with reporters.Neither our organization nor Sophie had any knowledge of this demonstration and no contact with its organizers, the Indiana Fever said in a statement. Our only goal as a team, whether at home or away, is to win basketball games and make Fever fans for life, and we are united in that mission.Devon Henderson contributed to this report. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Seattle Storm, Indiana Fever, WNBA2026 The Athletic Media Company

Frank Schmidt "convinced" Arijon Ibrahimovi can flourish at Bayern
Frank Schmidt "convinced" Arijon Ibrahimovi can flourish at BayernFrank Schmidt, current head coach of 1.FC Heidenheim, believes Arijon Ibrahimovi can definitely succeed at Bayern Munich.I can only judge the time Ari spent with us and how satisfied we were with his performances," Schmidt said, in an interview with Sport1."He is still a young player who took his first significant and consistent steps in the Bundesliga last season."Just think of the match in Munich with three games left in the campaign - if you saw what he produced on the pitch on that day."You could already see the potential and believe that he is only at the beginning of his career. He still has the ability to make huge steps forward, but he also has a lot to learn.I'm convinced he can achieve that in the environment at Bayern Munich, but nothing will come automatically, Schmidt added. With over 2,346 minutes played under Schmidt at 1.FC Heidenheim last season, it's clear the winger was highly rated by the veteran coach.

3 NBA players Heat should target in trades after losing out on LeBron sweepstakes
The Miami Heat were a frontrunner in the LeBron sweepstakes, with many people around the NBA, including their social media team, believing James was going to sign there. Instead, Miami missed out on King James.Miami knew that after making the blockbuster deal to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, it had to sign another notable free agent to become a contender in the Eastern Conference. Since LeBron waited until the end of free agency to make his decision, there arent many options left for Miami. Still, there are three free agents the Heat could target to establish themselves as legitimate contenders.MORE: 3 NBA teams who are most improved entering 2026-2027 seasonDeMar DeRozanApr 3, 2026; Sacramento, California, USA; Sacramento Kings guard DeMar DeRozan (10) during the third quarter against the New Orleans Pelicans at Golden 1 Center. Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn ImagesDeRozan was released by the Sacramento Kings earlier this offseason, and he would likely be the best fit in Miami.DeRozan is entering his 17th NBA season and proved last year that he still has plenty left in the tank. He averaged 18 points per game in 77 games. Miami is lacking significant guard play, with its projected starting backcourt consisting of Davion Mitchell and Tim Hardaway Jr. Those players arent bad, but on a championship contender theyre probably better suited as depth pieces.DeRozan has a couple of options in free agency, with several teams scrambling to make a move after LeBron signed with Philadelphia.Bradley BealThe Los Angeles Clippers recently traded Kawhi Leonard, signaling the start of a rebuild, so they likely wont re-sign Bradley Beal.Beal played just six games last season, but when healthy, hes still an elite scorer in the league. Were only five years removed from Beal leading the NBA in scoring at 31 points per game. Its clear Miami needs help in the backcourt, and he could take some of the offensive burden off Giannis and Bam Adebayo.MORE: 3 NBA teams that have quietly won the offseason alreadyBennedict MathurinApr 5, 2026; Sacramento, California, USA; LA Clippers guard Bennedict Mathurin (9) during the third quarter against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center. Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn ImagesThough Bennedict Mathurin is a restricted free agent, rumors are circulating that the Clippers are looking for sign-and-trade partners.Mathurin is entering his fifth season and has established himself as a reliable scorer. The young guard was traded to Los Angeles last year in a deal with the Indiana Pacers. He has consistently averaged around 17 points per game throughout his young career while making slight improvements in nearly every other statistical category. Mathurin is the youngest and most athletic option, but he would also be the most difficult player for the Heat to acquire. If the Heat want to become true contenders, Mathurin might be their best option. Wrexham eager to chart a pathway to the Premier League next season
Wrexham eager to chart a pathway to the Premier League next seasonWrexham will head into the 2026/27 Championship season as one of the favourites to win promotion to the Premier League. Some impressive pre-season performances have raised expectations around a club which has enjoyed a meteoric rise in recent years. After drawing with Wisla Krakow (0-0), the Welsh club recorded victories over Manchester United (1-0) and Leeds United (3-2).A narrow 1-0 defeat against Liverpool at Yankee Stadium in New York failed to dampen enthusiasm around the club.Parkinson delighted after Liverpool testWrexham have undoubtedly come a long way since co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney completed their purchase of the club in 2021.Their investment has helped the Dragons climb from the National League to the Championship. They are just one promotion away from the top flight.Manager Phil Parkinson is now eager to complete the journey. He believes their pre-season results highlight the progress they have made. You play Man United, Leeds and Liverpool and you come away with a single-goal defeat as your worst result out of the three, you have to say thats not a bad result, he said.In terms of the performance, were learning as a team. When were under a little bit of pressure and we get the ball back, thats when we have to lift the game and give ourselves a breather with the ball. When we did that, I thought we did okay.Imray move is a statement of intentWrexham kicked off their summer transfer business with the signing of wing-back Danny Imray from Crystal Palace for an undisclosed fee.The 23-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at West Bromwich Albion and produced a series of impressive performances.More new signings are expected at Wrexham, with the co-owners willing to sanction another major spending spree this summer.Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson and Everton shot-stopper Mark Travers are potential transfer targets.Leicester City defender Harry Souttar has also been linked with the club, although the 10m asking price is a stumbling block.Senegal forward Bamba Dieng has been touted as a possible option, but a move for Portsmouth defender Terry Devlin is unlikely following the Imray deal.More potential targets will emerge during August as Wrexham strive to win promotion to the Premier League at the second time of asking.Expanded play-offs boost Wrexhams promotion chancesWrexham agonisingly missed out on the play-offs last term as they finished two points behind Hull City, who subsequently went on to win the play-off final. The English Football Leagues decision to expand the Championship play-offs from four teams to six should work to Wrexhams advantage.West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are expected to be in contention for automatic promotion following their relegation from the top flight.Burnley, Middlesbrough and Birmingham City are other clubs who will expect to be challenging for a top two spot.Wrexhams investment in their squad could bring them into the equation, although a place in the expanded play-offs is a more likely target.Sheffield United, Norwich City and Derby County are amongst a plethora of clubs who will be eyeing a top eight finish. If Wrexham can spend their transfer kitty wisely, there is no reason why they cant mount a sustained challenge for promotion. However, given the strength of the Championship this season, it would be foolish to think the outcome is a foregone conclusion.

Real Madrid youngster wanted by three Italian clubs
Real Madrid youngster wanted by three Italian clubsThe forward Franco Mastantuono was one of the players who went into this summer with his future at Real Madrid highly uncertain, as the club was looking to send him to another team where he would get regular game time and thus continue his adaptation in Europe. However, the new coach, Jose Mourinho, wanted to see him firsthand in preseason training before making a decision about his future. Now, almost four weeks after the start of preseason training, it seems clear that the Argentine is not going to remain with Los Blancos next season, and he remains likely to leave this summer. In this regard, he was recently linked with a return to his native country of Argentina, where his former club, River Plate, wanted to sign him on loan. However, Real Madrid have ruled out any move for the youngster outside of Europe, as they want him to continue developing as a player in the most competitive leagues. In such a context, Italy could prove to be his next destination as MARCA reports that three Italian clubs, Fiorentina, AC Milan, and Napoli, are interested in him.The Florentines have already contacted the Merengues for this purpose, while the latter two clubs have also shown an interest in him in the past. However, the choice of his new club will depend on which of these teams is ready to offer him the opportunity to play primarily as the No. 10, something that none of his coaches at Real Madrid have offered him so far.A decision in this regard is not imminent, but the Merengues might not include him in their squad for the upcoming friendlies because they do not want to take any risks with him. Hopefully, Franco Matantuono will pick the best club for him going forward, and take full advantage of this opportunity to return to Real Madrid next year as a more accomplished player.
