A revised version of the bipartisan Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act was introduced in the U.S. Senate on Thursday by Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Senator Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.).The controversial piece of legislation, backed by TKO the parent company of UFC, WWE and Zuffa Boxing passed the U.S. House of Representatives in March by an overwhelming majority.The Ali Revival Act allows for the creation of Unified Boxing Organizations (UBOs). UBOs would remove the sports separation between promoters and sanctioning bodies, allowing promotional entites to run their own rankings systems, award titles and organize events under the same banner. The new bill essentially allows Zuffa Boxing to sidestep the guardrails of boxing and run similarly to the UFC.Many within combat sports are cautious about supporting the act because the UFC has a virtual monopoly over MMA, while WWE has a similar market share in wrestling, and thus there are concerns that Zuffa could reach the same level in boxing, which could be detrimental to fighters.Nico Ali Walsh, the grandson of Muhammad Ali and one of the biggest detractors of the bill, told Uncrowned earlier this week that the House's version of the Ali Revival Act would not pass in the Senate. Walsh said he has been in constant communication with Senators about amending the House's version to better protect fighters."Financial transparency, free agency, length of contract, rankings transparency," Walsh told Uncrowned of the four major areas that needed to be improved in the Ali Revival Act.The Senate's version of the bill introduced Thursday is largely similar to the one proposed in the House, though there are notable differences.Under the new proposal, a boxer's first professional promotional agreement would be limited to three years, while subsequent promotional contracts could not exceed six years. Those protections would apply not only to UBO agreements, but also to contracts between boxers and traditional promoters across the sport.Fighters would also be permitted to communicate with rival promoters or UBOs during the final 90 days of an existing agreement, although they would not be allowed to sign a new deal until the original contract expires. The House version provided a 30-day negotiation window.The Senate version would allow a UBO to recognize or use titles and rankings issued by outside organizations, potentially preserving the possibility of crossover fights and undisputed champions involving fighters from different systems.It also removes language from the House bill that sought to limit sanctioning bodies and UBOs to one champion per weight division, excluding interim titles.The Senate proposal adds further disclosure requirements relating to rankings. UBOs operating their own ratings systems would be required to make public their ranking criteria, bylaws, appeals procedures and the identities of officials involved in voting on boxer ratings. That information would be submitted to the Federal Trade Commission and Association of Boxing Commissions or published on a freely accessible website.The bill also retains a firewall between UBOs and managers intended to reduce financial conflicts of interest. UBO representatives would be prohibited from holding a financial interest in a boxer's management or employing managers who represent fighters competing in covered bouts.The Senate bill will now have to pass through the Commerce Committee and then the full Senate. If approved, lawmakers would then need to reconcile it with the House version before a final bill is signed into law.Congress has until the end of its current term in early January to reach an agreement, otherwise the legislative process would have to begin again under the next Congress.The Senate proposal would apply to professional boxing matches held at least 180 days after the legislation is enacted, while the House bill wouldve taken effect 30 days after being signed.

North Carolina coach Bill Belichick met with the media Thursday for the first time since team general manager and Belichicks long-time employee Michael Lombardi was placed on administrative leave. In true Belichick fashion, he declined to discuss specifics about the Lombardi situation.Belichick and North Carolina athletics director Steve Newmark also declined to discuss reports of a possible investigation by the College Sports Commission, per WRAL News. Prior to Belichicks press conference, UNC announced that all staff, coaches and student-athletes are prohibited from addressing the situation regarding Michael Lombardi in any capacity, per WRAL. Belichick stuck to that plan, though did make broad comments later on, in which he mentioned the team was working through some things with Lombardi out. Were working through some things, Belichick said. Were at a particular time of year now where there are certain things that are in play and there are certain things that arent in play that wont happen until later in the calendar year. Were taking it day-to-day and working through the things that are on the table.That comment came after Belichick was asked how the team was delegating Lombardis duties while hes on leave. Lombardi was placed on paid administrative leave, the school announced Monday. UNC has yet to provide specifics on what led to Lombardis leave. Team chancellor Lee Roberts did address the situation Thursday, and confirmed an investigation has been launched by the university, per WRAL.With respect to football, we learned of some concerns last week. We put Mike Lombardi on administrative leave, as you know. We began an investigation. If something has gone wrong, we want to know about it. If something needs to be fixed, we will be sure to fix it. There's a standard of excellence here that all of us are entrusted with adhering to.Roberts also lamented the fact that they were talking about the Lombardi situation and not focusing on the UNC football team. Lombardi is a long-time Belichick collaborator. The two have worked together with the Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots and now at North Carolina. Lombardi was paid $1.5 million in his first year at UNC, making him the highest-paid general manager in college football.

Detroit The Red Wings and captain Dylan Larkin might be at odds, after Larkin having demanded a trade just after last season ended.But the Wings were apparently willing Thursday to let bygones be bygones for a day, wishing Larkin a happy 30th birthday.The happy birthday announcement came via the Red Wings' social media account, as the team does do with every Wings player.Larkin's trade request became public June 5 and has been a central topic around the Wings until, that is, Steve Yzerman stepped down from his general manager's role July 15 and will transition into an adviser's role.The Wings have yet to name a successor for Yzerman, and Larkin's trade request will likely remain unchanged until a new GM comes aboard.Larkin was a key factor in the USA's gold medal victory at the Winter Olympics, and he had 34 goals and 33 assists, for 67 points, in 74 games with the Wings. It was Larkin's fifth consecutive season with over 30 goals.But the Wings missed the playoffs for a 10th consecutive season the longest current streak in the NHL all with Larkin on the team. The team's consistent losing, along with a frosty relationship with Larkin, likely pushed the captain to make the trade request.
