KARLSTAD, Sweden (AP) A hockey team in the Swedish Elite League has terminated the contract of Cal Foote after objections from fans about it. Frjestad BK announced Thursday it was not going to honor the contract after conversations with stakeholders.Foote was one of five players acquitted of sexual assault in the high-profile Hockey Canada 2018 world junior case. The 27-year-old defenseman spent much of last season with the AHLs Chicago Wolves.He was in the New Jersey Devils organization when the NHL suspended the players involved. One thing became immediately apparent before New Mexico United began its press conference: both players and coaching staff are enjoying an entire week in Albuquerque, and the perks that come with it no travel, training at their own facility and sleeping in their own beds.And if there were any doubts, it didnt take long to set the record straight.Especially after last week, manager Dennis Sanchez said Thursday, referring to Uniteds double-postponed match at Birmingham Legion FC.It was less than ideal. Certainly as a way to close a three-week road stint that covered a little more than 5,900 round-tip miles, 2,600 of which by way of that final stop in the Deep South.Originally scheduled to take place at Dunnavant Valley Fields a 50-acre public sports complex in Shelby County, Alabama, outside Birmingham last Friday, inclement weather pushed the match back a day. Last Saturday, however, wasnt better and a waterlogged playing surface led to the second postponement. No makeup date has been announced.Complicating matters was the match taking place in what is essentially a park.Much of those issues likely could have been avoided had Protective Stadium, a 47,000-seat turfed facility that is Legions normal home, been available. It was being set up for an Usher and Chris Brown concert that took place Tuesday and Wednesday.In the end, it was a lot of starting and stopping, and plenty of preparation for not much benefit.Honestly, I would say it was difficult, goalkeeper Kris Shakes said. We were planning to play on Friday got postponed. Were ready to play the game and it was just staying together. Obviously, were away from home, in a hotel for four or five days, just bonding together and keeping the energy up. We had training sessions there. So we just kept preparing for it if it did happen.Ultimately, it didnt happen, so that motivates us for this week back at home.Perhaps in more ways than one.Uniteds match against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (7-5-4) on Saturday will be the clubs first at Isotopes Park in 28 days. It will also be coming off a 17-day gap between games, the longest of the season for New Mexico (7-4-3). Uniteds previous high was 14 days from the April 11 match at Phoenix Rising to hosting AV Alta FC in a USL Cup game on April 25.That recent delay dropped United (24 points) from third in the Western Conference table to fifth, allowing FC Tulsa (26) and Colorado Springs (25) to move ahead at least temporarily. Six other clubs in the West, meanwhile, are three points behind or less.Surrounding all this? Uniteds nine-match unbeaten streak across all competitions regular season, the USL Cup and an international friendly which has included five clean sheets.The hope is, being back home makes coming off that layoff a little easier. If not, a bit more palatable.Last week was a little different than having a planned weekend off, per se, Sanchez said. There was no physical aspect to not playing a game. We maintained a level of freshness, but from a mental standpoint, we prepared for a game on two separate days. Only one Virginia Tech athlete made the preseason All-ACC team: senior defensive tackle Kemari Copeland. Newark is already the longtime home of the popular Cherry Blossom 10K Run every April at Essex County Branch Brook Park, and the Newark Running Club, the Brick City Run Club and the Newark Striders are just some of the local groups formed to lace up and hit the road together.Now, Newark will bolster its fleet-footed bona fides with a 15-kilometer road race debuting Oct. 4. The Branch Brook 15K will be run in the same county park as the Cherry Blossom race, though it will take advantage of fall foliage to color the course.Branch Brook Park is one of the most beautiful and recognizable running destinations in New Jersey, said Dave Alfano, a co-founder of Trials of Miles, the California running event company thats organizing the race. It offers a combination that is difficult to find elsewhere a scenic setting, a flat and fast course, substantial space, an established connection to the running community and a location that is easily accessible from across North Jersey and New York City. We felt it was the ideal place to build a major fall road race.The 9.3-mile road race a mile equals 1.6K, or kilometers is open to competitive runners, weekend road warriors, and anybody else who can spare the $75 registration fee and is among the first 2,500 to sign up. The run is co-sponsored locally by Fleet Feet Montclair, a shop in the Essex County suburb a few miles from the park, and by New Jersey Institute of Technology, located in Newark a few blocks away.The new race was approved by the Essex County Parks Department, which operates the park and sponsors the Cherry Blossom 10K, which registered its maximum of 3,000 runners in April, its 50th running. Alfano said the choice of the new events location was also due in part to the popularity of the Cherry Blossom 10K which takes its name from the parks collection of 5,500 of the pinkish trees, said to be the nations largest. There is already significant demand for a large, well-organized race in Branch Brook Park, Alfano said. Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton has been suspended from the teams next five home games, according to the WNBA, following an exchange with two fans Tuesday night.Reports say that during the Storms game against the Indiana Fever on Tuesday night, Keaton made an aggressive statement toward two young girls sitting courtside wearing merch and carrying signs in support of Sophie Cunningham. The Indiana Fever guard has made news off the court by speaking out against transgender athletes in sports. Photos from Tuesday night show two teenage girls sitting courtside, wearing XX and XY T-shirts symbolizing sex chromosomes, and carrying signs thanking Cunningham for her support of girls sports. In a post on X.com, one of the girls said that when Keaton first approached them, she thought she was going to be nice, but then Keaton started yelling at them. She told us that we were f-ing insane, One of the girls wrote. Cunningham is one of a few professional and collegiate athletes who have spoken out against transgender kids participating in sports. Cunningham has spoken about wanting to protect girls from having to compete with transgender athletes.The majority of the legislative changes resulting from it impact elementary-, middle-, and high school-aged children. There are currently no openly transgender players in the WNBA. However, in over half the states in the U.S., transgender kids are banned from competing on sports teams that align with their gender identities in both public and private schools. The suspension comes a day after the team issued an apology for the incident but did not mention Keaton. In a statement on Thursday, the team said it respects the leagues decision. The league also said Keaton would be fined an undisclosed amount.
