Franco Baresi became captain of AC Milan at the age of 22 [Getty Images]Franco Baresi has died at the age of 66, with AC Milan saying their former captain's "example and integrity will be forever etched into the club's DNA".Baresi spent his entire 20-year playing career with the club from 1977 until he retired in 1997, winning six Serie A titles and three European Cups/Champions Leagues. Regarded as one of the greatest defenders to play the game, Baresi captained Milan for 15 seasons, making 719 appearances and scoring 33 goals. He was capped 81 times by Italy and was part of the squad which won the 1982 World Cup. He played in the 1994 final, which Italy lost to Brazil.In 2020, Baresi became honorary vice-president of AC Milan, with the club retiring his number six shirt four years later.Baresi formed part of one of European football's most celebrated defences alongside Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Mauro Tassotti. He also lifted four Supercoppa Italianas, two European Super Cups and the Intercontinental Cup twice. Gianni Infantino celebrated 10 years as Fifa president on 26 February 2026 [Getty Images]Gianni Infantino has been the Fifa president for 10 years, when he was elected with a remit to rescue football's world governing body.The decade since has been one of reform, expansion and, more recently, controversy.Infantino was installed with Fifa engulfed by claims of widespread corruption and after predecessor Sepp Blatter had resigned.Fifa's finances were in a desperate state. There was a reported $550m (392m) black hole after sponsors walked away.In Infantino, the game felt it had found a safe pair of hands."I will work tirelessly to bring football back to Fifa, and Fifa back to football," Infantino said.Ten years on, there can be no doubt the governing body is in rude health. It expects to report record revenues of $13bn (9.6bn) for the three-year cycle through to the end of this year.But those figures only tell part of the story.They are boosted by the controversial Club World Cup, and the biggest-ever World Cup with its high ticket prices.Infantino and Fifa's recent proposal to sell stakes in its competitions - including the World Cup - to private investors has drawn widespread criticism, with football's global governing body accused of selling out the sport.Infantino has clashed with players' unions and European football, but remains in a strong position at the top of the world game.This is the story of his presidency and his legacy.Fifa says 'nobody selling football' as plan continuesIs Infantino finished? What happens now?Uefa to boycott World Cups if Fifa plans approved'A new day, a new dawn'Infantino was the man who made the Champions League draw before taking the game's top job [Getty Images]It is easy to forget Blatter's successor as Fifa president was supposed to be Michel Platini.But after Platini was drawn into the scandal at the organisation - both he and Blatter were later fully cleared of corruption charges - Infantino was thrust forward as Uefa's preferred candidate.As the general secretary of European football's governing body, Infantino had been the right-hand man of president Platini for seven years.But he was an unlikely saviour - a man who was rarely in the consciousness of the average football fan. To many he was just the guy who presented Champions League draws. Ten years on, you would be hard pressed to find a football fan who does not recognise him.Turning Fifa around was no small task. The US Department of Justice had indicted a large number of top executives and it needed root-and-branch reform.Two pages of Infantino's manifesto were devoted to more than doubling development money for member associations. That would be for new competitions, for infrastructure, and even to cover travel costs for smaller nations.Expanding the World Cup was also included, though to 40 teams. Within a year it had been rubber-stamped as a 48-team tournament.The election was a close-run thing.In the first round of votes, Infantino led Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa - president of the Asian confederation - by 88 votes to 85.Infantino only moved clear when the 34 votes originally cast for Jordan's Prince Ali bin al-Hussein and French executive Jerome Champagne were reallocated. The final score was 115 votes to 88."This is a new day, a new dawn," said then Football Association chairman Greg Dyke, welcoming Infantino's win. "He is not a politician and he is not an ego."Infantino, meanwhile, declared he would "restore the image of Fifa"."It's your money, not the money of the Fifa president," Infantino told delegates. "The money of Fifa has to be used to develop football."Infantino was true to his word. It was only when the World Cup rolled into Qatar that he started to become a more public figure.Under pressure amid repeated criticisms about workers' rights and claims of modern slavery in the country, Infantino hit back.He first called out "hypocrisy" and "racism" about Qatar in the European media, then made his infamous speech about discrimination. "Today I feel Qatari," he said. "Today I feel Arabic. Today I feel African. Today I feel gay. Today I feel disabled. Today I feel like a migrant worker."At every game he attended, TV cameras appeared to pick him out in the crowd. And there was a reason. Reports, which Fifa declined to comment on, suggested television directors were advised that Infantino should be shown at least once each game, but not if he was on his phone.Fifa accused of breaching own rules with Trump awardTrump and Infantino - too close for comfort?Fifa accused of creating 'fake' player unionsInfantino starts to court controversyAfter the Qatar World Cup, Infantino made many more headlines - from hosting plans and new tournaments to disparaging remarks about the behaviour of England fans.Infantino had promised an expanded, summer Club World Cup shortly after his election in 2016. The plan hit several delays but - two days before the 2022 World Cup final - Fifa eventually announced it would go ahead in 2025, hosted by the United States.It placed a large-scale tournament in a summer which was usually reserved for player recovery.Fifa rejected claims players' union' Fifpro and the World Leagues' Association were not consulted.Then came the unique allocation of the 2030 and 2034 World Cup finals.It was decided the 2030 edition would be staged across three continents - Africa, Europe and South America. That meant the 2034 event had to go to Asia or Oceania.With no realistic competition, it effectively guaranteed Saudi Arabia - another country with questions about its human rights record - would host. Saudi Arabia and Fifa, under Infantino, had developed a close relationship.Norway's football federation abstained from the process and argued the bidding process undermined "Fifa's reforms for good governance" and challenged "trust in Fifa".In May 2024, it was revealed Infantino received a 33% pay rise - determined by an independent committee- upon his re-election the previous year. It took his base salary from 1.95m Swiss francs (1.7m) in 2022 to 2.6m Swiss francs (2.3m).On top of that, he was due a bonus of 1.65m Swiss francs (1.5m), which was unchanged. Infantino, who was earning about 1.3m when first elected in 2016, is now close to Blatter's final annual salary payment of 2.6m.However, a Fifa investigation showed that under Blatter leading executives were being paid huge bonuses running well into the millions.In November 2024, with the new-look Club World Cup drawing closer, Fifa unveiled the trophy - engraved with a personal tribute."Inspired by the Fifa president Gianni Infantino," it read.Infantino grows closer to TrumpInfantino and Donald Trump have become closely linked, and the US president was awarded the inaugural Fifa Peace Prize [Getty Images]Uefa was growing frustrated with Infantino's profile and his close relationship with US President Donald Trump.It came to a head in May 2025. Infantino had been on a diplomatic tour of the Middle East with Trump and turned up two hours late for the Fifa Congress.Uefa accused Infantino of prioritising "private political interests" and staged a walk-out.Then came last summer's Club World Cup, which was characterised by stadiums with swathes of empty seats.Yet when Infantino gathered the media at Trump Tower, he declared it to be "already the most successful club competition in the world".In December, the draw for this summer's World Cup was a long, lavish and outlandish affair.Infantino was front and centre, and Trump was awarded the controversial Fifa Peace Prize.Within a week came the announcement of high ticket prices for the finals.Group-stage tickets are up to three times the price of those for the 2022 World Cup, and the cheapest ticket for the final in New Jersey is 3,119.After a minor climbdown, Infantino defended the prices and said they reflected the public's "absolutely crazy" demand.Infantino insisted all the money would go back into the game, saying "without Fifa there would be no football in 150 countries".He still had one more media mis-step to go before reaching his 10-year anniversary.Earlier this month he had to apologise after saying it was "really special" no British nationals were arrested during the 2022 World Cup.World Cup controversy - and backlash to investment planInfantino came to wider public attention, and attracted further criticism, during this summer's World Cup, which was staged in the USA, Mexico and Canada.The tournament made headlines before a ball was kicked, with visas to the United States delayed - and even denied - for supporters, coaching staff and officials. In May, Iran's base for the tournament was moved to Mexico after the US made it clear it did not want to host the team because of political tensions between the two nations.That was followed by Somali referee Omar Artan, one of 52 officials appointed to work at the tournament, being refused entry when he arrived at Miami International Airport.Fifa refused to intervene on Artan's behalf, saying it was "not involved in the host country's immigration process".When the football did eventually begin, Infantino's relationship with Trump was thrust into the spotlight when the US President asked Fifa to overturn Folarin Balogun's one-match suspension.USA forward Balogun was sent off during the lat-32 tie against Bosnia-Herzegovina but was cleared to feature in the next round after an unprecedented intervention from Trump, which drew widespread criticism.The fallout from the World Cup continued earlier this week as Fifa opened disciplinary proceedings against Argentina over its behaviour after the final defeat by Spain and throughout the tournament.On Wednesday, meanwhile, Infantino offered all 211 of Fifa's member associations $40m (30m) if they backed his controversial plans to sell off stakes in the organisation's major competitions - including the World Cup.The plans, which have prompted Uefa nations to agree to boycott all future Fifa competitions if the proposal is passed, would see Fifa create a commercial subsidiary to run its main events. External investors would then be able to buy stakes in the company.Despite the controversies, one fact remains: there is still no meaningful opposition to Infantino.While the 55-year-old may face criticism in Europe, for the rest of the world he has made a clear difference. Yes, it is about money. Dakota Ditcheva won the PFL flyweight title in 2024 [Getty Images]When Dakota Ditcheva makes her PFL return against Denise Kielholtz in New York City on Friday, she will do so with a very different mindset.It has been a year like no other for Ditcheva, who has been sidelined by injury since breaking her left hand against Sumiko Inaba in July 2025.The British-Bulgarian, unbeaten in her 15-fight professional career, was scheduled to return against Keilholtz in February, but the fight was postponed after she suffered another significant injury, this time to her right hand.For Ditcheva, who won the PFL flyweight tournament and $1m (740,000) in 2024, her time away has underlined the importance of building a successful career outside the cage."It has been tough, and I have been really lucky that I am building things outside of the sport where I have other things I can do and keep busy," Ditcheva told BBC Sport."That has always been a really big thing for me. I always say that when I am done being a fighter, I want to be set up in other things because these moments, where things are taken away from you, kind of give you an insight into what life is going to be like when you stop fighting. Like, 'now what?"'It is something her mother, Lisa Howarth, understands only too well. A former kickboxing and Muay Thai world champion, Howarth successfully built a career in the police after retiring from combat sports."She has always said right from the beginning that you need to set something up because she didn't really do that," Ditcheva said."She had an amazing career afterwards because of the type of person she is, but she didn't set anything up that she could have got from the sport."In January 2025, Ditcheva, 28, took her first steps into the world of business by co-founding a premium mineral water brand. "Back in England, you get a pension after you've finished some jobs, so you're set up for later in life. Fighters don't get that," Ditcheva said."Our promotions don't take a cut of our money to save for after we've retired."Ditcheva offers support for Poirier after arrestWhile some fighters struggle financially, with pay continuing to be a topic of debate, others find it difficult to replace the routine of a training camp and the sense of purpose provided by having a fight date to work towards.In June, ex-UFC fighter Dustin Poirier, who trained with Ditcheva at American Top Team, said he was "at the point where I need some help" after being arrested for alleged public drunkenness.Ditcheva says she has not spoken directly with Poirier but, having spent 12 months on the sidelines, recognises how the absence of training and fighting can take a toll."It is sad to see a lot of people online saying what they are saying because he [Poirier] is just a normal guy who is struggling with a feeling that not one person outside of the sport will understand," Ditcheva said."Unless you can feel the adrenaline rush we get, and understand that it's a feeling you can't get from anything else, you won't understand what he is going through after giving up fighting."I think he's doing the right thing, from what I have seen online, and focusing on himself.
