SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPhoenix end winless run with victory over FireCapsey and Perry struck a combined 16 fours and two sixes [Getty Images]The Hundred women's competition, EdgbastonWelsh Fire 144-3 (100 balls): Voll 78 (55); Capsey 2-24Birmingham Phoenix 145-3 (99 balls): Perry 68 (46), Capsey 51 (29); Voll 1-9Birmingham Phoenix won by seven wicketsScorecard.TableEllyse Perry and Alice Capsey starred as Birmingham Phoenix picked up their first win of the women's Hundred with a nail-biting seven-wicket victory over Welsh Fire.Chasing 145 in front of minority shareholder and England midfielder Jude Bellingham at Edgbaston, Capsey, who had earlier picked up two wickets, hit 51 (29) and Perry an unbeaten 68 (46) to help Phoenix home with one ball to spare. Opener Davina Perrin fell just five balls into Phoenix's chase while Tammy Beaumont couldn't capitalise on being dropped on 10, picking out Heather Graham for 14, before Capsey and Perry came together for a match-changing 86-run third-wicket stand. Capsey's dismissal, caught cheaply at deep mid-wicket by Graham off the 82nd delivery, nearly proved the turning point, with Phoenix faltering from 24 runs required from 19 balls to needing 12 runs off the final set. But captain Perry held her nerve, trading singles with Annerie Dercksen before dispatching Graham for a six and a four to see her side over the line. The victory only their third in 12 matches since the beginning of the 2025 edition moves Phoenix off the foot of the table and into fifth place after four matches. Welsh Fire slip down to seventh, with one win and three defeats.Earlier, the tournament's leading run-scorer Georgia Voll struck a half-century for Fire against her former side, hitting nine fours and two sixes as she top-scored with 78 (55).The Australian put on 58 for the first wicket with Ella McCaughan and a further 35 with Sophie Devine, who hit a flurry of late boundaries in her unbeaten 35 (19), but Fire were left to rue their lethargic powerplay, posting a run-a-ball 25-0.Capsey collected 2-24 but Lauren Filer was the pick of the bowlers, conceding just 15 runs from her 20 deliveries. All our Hundred Who Am I? quizzes in one placeWhat is happening on Sunday? There are another four games taking place.Trent Rockets host SunRisers Leeds in the women's competition at Trent Bridge at 11:00 BST, followed by the men's game at 14:30. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe five dramatic days that shook Infantino and world footballFifa president Gianni Infantino has withdrawn his controversial World Cup funding plan [Getty Images]Any hope Gianni Infantino might have had of tiptoeing away from the scene of his World Cup private-investment wreckage having sustained only minor damage to his reputation disappeared on Saturday.Uefa - the governing body of European football - went straight for the head of world game, saying it had "lost confidence" in his leadership. It was one of the most ferocious statements ever aimed at the holder of that position.Words such as "shabby" and "secret schemes" spoke for themselves. It came after a dramatic five days for football that sparked memories of the European Super League debacle of 2021.The ESL was a splinter league formed by 12 of Europe's biggest clubs, including six from the Premier League.Former England defender Gary Neville echoed the thoughts of many when he referred to it as "pure greed". It quickly unravelled.Infantino's private-investment plan did not have a catchy title, and lasted two days longer than the ESL.But despite football's world governing body confirming the proposal was being withdrawn on Saturday, the infamy will linger much longer. At the top level, football is a vast, money-making enterprise. The sums players and executives earn is beyond the scope of 'ordinary' fans. But have we discovered there is a line that cannot be crossed?Uefa has 'lost confidence' in Infantino's Fifa leadershipFifa scraps controversial World Cup investment planInfantino on the brink? Who might replace him if he goes?A question that needed to be askedAFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa (left) - with Gianni Infantino in 2023 - was among those to criticise the Swiss' plans [Getty Images]The question many have asked around Infantino's plan is tied into a separate - but critical - aspect of the fundamental reasons behind this week unravelling. Fifa is a not-for-profit organisation. It has huge financial reserves - over $2bn (1.48bn) - and is expected to announce record revenues of about $15bn (11.13bn) in relation to this summer's World Cup.Given that backdrop - and the reality some countries simply did not need the extra $40m (29.67m) being offered for football development initiatives if they signed up to Infantino's plan by 19 September - many wondered why private investment was needed in the first place. It was a question that needed to be asked. But that did not happen in public - or, it has become apparent, privately in Fifa's corridors of power. Many of Fifa's most senior people - from vice-presidents to special advisers and executives - did not have a chance to ask any questions, simply because they had no clue the plans were being drawn up.Uefa had strongly opposed the plans from the moment they became public. When they were dropped, its response was damning."The current Fifa leadership has not only lost Uefa's confidence but also that of many other members of the football family," it said in a statement."When Gianni Infantino asked for the trust and the votes of Fifa's member associations to elect him as their president in 2016, he said: 'Of course we have to be transparent.'"He told the assembled stakeholders: 'The money of Fifa is your money. It's not the money of the Fifa president. You are the national associations and the money of Fifa has to serve for the development of football and not for anything else.'"On both these promises, he has failed to deliver."It was not the first time a lack of transparency had been highlighted.Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa - president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and one of eight Fifa vice-presidents - referred to it too.He said any future plans that may impact global football should be presented to members "in a timely, transparent and meaningful manner"."The future of global football must always be shaped through proper consultation, collective dialogue and respect for the established governance structures of our game," he added.Football Australia chair Anter Isaac said trust was earned "not simply through good decisions, but through the integrity of the processes that lead to them"."Football has never stood still, nor should it," he said. "Some principles, however, should never change. Integrity. Independence. Good governance. Transparency. Meaningful consultation. Due process. These are not constraints on progress."European Super League all over again? With the ESL, it was the fans that drew the line - backed by the Premier League, the Football Association and even Prince William. The plan in 2021 was for the clubs who took part to remain in their national leagues, but also to play each other in a new midweek European competition, which would have rivalled the Champions League.Critics argued it was a way for the clubs to enrich themselves in a closed league that would have increased commercial and broadcasting income, and the principle of a domestic football pyramid should be protected. After 72 hours of criticism, the plans all but fell apart. In the aftermath, it was claimed clubs did not get the opportunity to present a rounded case because the outline plan was leaked to the media. That meant the reaction was so fierce any counter-argument would have been lost. This week has been remarkably similar - except this time, it was people in football who drew the line in the sand. The only real difference is Fifa did put its counterargument forward in the early hours of Friday - along with an assertion its "planned consultation process was disrupted by incorrect media reports".As with the ESL, by that point the direction of travel was already established and could not be changed. With sentiment so strongly against the plans, a damning statement from Fifa's respected chief operating officer Kevin Lamour would have been a crushing blow. He described the controversial plans as "the project of one person" and claimed Fifa's administration had been "deceived". BBC Sport has approached Fifa for comment.Lamour acknowledged he had a duty of loyalty to his employer but also to "certain values" and supporting his colleagues."Our mission - the mission of the hundreds of passionate, dedicated, and exemplary Fifa employees - is to serve football," he wrote."If that means I lose my job, then so be it. I will understand and respect that decision. "At least I'll sleep well tonight."Trump distances himself - but what happens now?Fifa president Gianni Infantino (left) and US president Donald Trump prepare to present the World Cup [Getty Images]Infantino has developed a close relationship with US President Donald Trump, and the pair helped present the World Cup to Spain less than a fortnight ago.If Infantino was looking for assistance from Trump when he was asked about the proposals for the first time on Friday, he did not get it. Trump said he had not spoken to the 56-year-old about the plans.A report in the New York Post, which broke the story of the plans being withdrawn, quoted an unnamed source saying the situation had become a "brand nightmare" for Joshua Kushner - brother of Trump's son-in-law Jared.Kusher founded Thrive Eternal - the American venture capital firm that would have led the proposed investor group had Fifa's plans gone ahead. As with the ESL, in the end, Infantino was left with no choice but to withdraw the idea. Now he is left to clear up the mess and build bridges, amid claims support for his re-election as Fifa president in March is receding.Speaking before Uefa's statement on Saturday, its vice-president Laura McAllister spoke to BBC Radio Four's Today programme."All of the confederations will be considering options now," she said."There will be moves, I'm sure, to encourage people to stand, but it's early days yet."The key thing this week has been to defeat this proposal with unity and consensus and that's what we've been able to do."Once again, football has shown that while it is prepared to accept many things - and not all of them will be popular - there are some lines that cannot be crossed.Courting controversy and befriending Trump - the story of Fifa boss InfantinoGet football news sent straight to your phone0 Comments 0 Shares 46 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMeet The Highest-Ranking Black Executive In SportsOn a cold winter day in January 2014, Mark Tatum sat nervously at NBA headquarters in New York. At the time, he was the leagues executive vice president in charge of global marketing partnerships and for days he knew a big decision about his NBA career was coming. Adam Silver, who had just been named NBA Commissioner and chief executive of the league, told Tatum that he was being considered for the deputy commissioner role. And on January 31, the leagues owners were casting their final votes. The final tally was 30-0 and 12 years later, Tatum remains the highest-ranking Black executive in sports. When I was growing up in the business, Tatum tells Forbes, I never dreamed that becoming the deputy commissioner was an option. My dream was to become the head of corporate sponsorship in a league. So, for me, getting that phone call was a little bit of a pinch myself [moment]. I can't believe this is actually happening. And from a representation standpoint, I knew the importance of the moment.https://www.forbes.com/video/f9e7aa8e-520d-4a7b-b5b6-4258cb6e1758/Tatum is tasked with growing the NBAs business and the affairs of its 30 franchises, which are worth more than $5.4 billion on average, according to Forbes. Additionally, the NBA operates a league in China thats valued at more at a reported $5 billion, a league in Africa worth more than $1 billion, and is scheduled to start a league in Europe by October 2027.Youre looking at a $180 billion market cap company, Tatum says of the NBA. I think what youre seeing is people are very bullish on the prospects of the NBA. Were a global sport. The son of a Jamaican father and Asian mother, Tatum was born in Vietnam and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Hes the second Black executive to serve as the NBAs Deputy Commissioner. The first was Simon Gourdine, who took the role in 1974 and passed away in 2012. Its a critical part of the business world and oftentimes does not get the attention that it deserves, Tatum says of Black Business Month, which was launched in 2004 and celebrated each August. I think people underestimate the impact that Black businesses have on the economy and have on this country, he adds. There needs to be more education on the importance and the contributions of Black businesses.Tatum spoke with The Enterprise Zone podcast about what the Deputy Commissioner role means to him. He also shared the five Black business leaders who inspire him:David GrainGetty ImagesDavid Grain, Founder, Grain ManagementIn 2007, Grain started Grain Management, a private equity firm that invests in telecommunications infrastructure like fiber networks, wireless spectrum, and cellphone towers. Grain, 64, has a net worth of $2.4 billion, according to Forbes. David is just so principled, so down to earth, so disciplined as an investor, but also very giving, Tatum says. He gives a lot back to the Martha's Vineyard Museum. He's also somebody who, in his hiring, makes sure that there's great representation of African-Americans within his company.Sheila JohnsonGetty Images for National Urban LeagueSheila Johnson, Cofounder, BET NetworkJohnson, 77, is a ForbesBLK 50 honoree and co-founded BET in 1980 with her then-husband, Robert Johnson. Viacom bought BET for $3 billion in 2001. Today, she is one of the few Black female billionaires and owns stakes in three professional sports teams: the NBAs Wizards, the WNBAs Mystics, and the NHLs Capitals. Johnson also founded the Salamander Collection, a hospitality company. I learned from Sheila the power of relationships and the power of putting her money where her mouth is, Tatum says. She was a believer in the WNBA when others were questioning and doubting the power of women's sports. He adds, What I learned from her is really don't give up on ideas; continue to invest if you believe in them, continue to market these things. Over time, people will come around to your way of thinking.Ed LewisGetty Images for OWNEd Lewis, Cofounder, Essence magazineLewis, 86, started his career as a financial analyst before founding Essence magazine in 1969. He built the publication for Black women into a major digital platform that now includes a popular music festival in New Orleans. I think the thing that inspired me, says Tatum, [Lewis] took this idea, he took this opportunity, created a product around it to fill a gap, then he created a platform around it.Reginald F. He led the $985 million leveraged buyout of Beatrice International, a food conglomerate. In 1991, the Baltimore native joined The Forbes 400 with a net worth of $340 million. In terms of representation, Tatum says, growing up, when I first started getting into the business world, he was somebody that I admired from afar because here was this brother who was on the Forbes list. Up until that point, that hadnt been seen before.Robert F. Today, Smiths net worth is estimated at $10 billion, making him the fifth richest among the worlds 27 Black billionaires. Robert gives back to young Black entrepreneurs, Tatum says. He shows up. There are a handful of events that I've been to where there have been other senior Black executives; some that are aspiring executives. When Robert walks into the room, he talks to everybody. He shows up in those rooms. He shows up in those places, and he is passionate about creating more wealth in the Black community. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Sometimes he wants to leave' - De Zerbi on Richarlison's Spurs futureRicharlison scored a stoppage-time winner for Tottenham against Chelsea in the Sydney Super Cup on Saturday [Getty Images]Roberto de Zerbi says Tottenham "don't know" whether forward Richarlison will stay at the club as he "sometimes" wants to leave. The Brazil international, 29, scored a last-minute winner as 10-man Spurs beat Chelsea 2-1 in a high-profile friendly in Sydney. After the match, De Zerbi was asked whether Richarlison - who has entered the final year of his contract - would leave this summer."I don't know because I like him as a player and as a guy," De Zerbi said at Accor Stadium. "He's unbelievable in terms of attitude and behaviour. But, in the end, we have to respect what he wants to do."When pressed on whether Richarlison wants to leave, he added: "I don't know. I didn't understand well because sometimes he says he wants to stay, sometimes he wants to leave. We have to speak anyway. There is not any problem. He's a lovely guy."The Italian coach was keen to point out Richarlison's professionalism and impact in a chaotic campaign that saw Spurs battle relegation, scoring 12 goals."For me, he's still an important player because it's not easy to find another striker like Richarlison," he said. "Richarlison scores goals. He knows the way. With any new striker, we don't know."He scored 12 goals last season, not because of luck but because he knows how to score."All of us love him, the team-mates, the club and the staff because he works hard every day, seriously every day, and we can't say anything about him on the pitch."The situation comes in the context of Spurs' record-breaking 237m transfer window, which is set to continue with the pursuit of two more attackers. One is understood to be Manchester City's Savinho, while Liverpool's Cody Gakpo has also been linked.Latest Tottenham news, analysis and fan viewsAsk about Tottenham - what do you want to know?0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views 0 Reviews
