Red Sox beat Dodgers, secure franchise's best-ever win percentage in full calendar month after going 21-4 in July
The Boston Red Sox began July in the basement of the AL East. They ended it six games back of the division lead, three games back of the final wild-card spot and seven games over .500. Now 58-51, Boston went a head-turning 21-4 in July, logging the franchises best-ever win percentage in a full calendar month (.840) and transforming from potential trade deadline sellers into a team with reason to add to a playoff-contending roster. The Red Sox, led by interim manager Chad Tracy whos in his fourth month at the helm after Boston fired Alex Cora and a collection of other coaches in April wrapped their season-changing month on Friday night with a 9-4 road victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.A two-run Shohei Ohtani homer in the fifth lifted the Dodgers to a mid-game lead; however, the Red Sox put up a five-spot in the seventh inning to reclaim an advantage they wouldnt relinquish. Ceddanne Rafaela got the ball rolling with a two-run shot of his own that inning. That big fly was a clutch delivery from the All-Star center fielder, who started rounding the bases with his chilly celebration, rubbing his arms to show off the ice in his veins. The Red Sox went 21-4 in JulyThat .840 win pct is the highest in a calendar month in franchise history, min 15 games Sarah Langs (@SlangsOnSports) August 1, 2026Bostons 21 wins are its most in a month since August 2004, according to MLB.com. That season, of course, the Red Sox broke the 86-year-old Curse of the Bambino, sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals to win their first World Series since 1918.The franchise has added three more World Series titles in the aftermath of that monumental triumph, bringing home the Commissioners Trophy in 2007, 2013 and 2018.But the Red Sox have made the playoffs only twice since they last reached the mountain top. It looked like they were going to be watching October baseball from their couches this time around. A July that featured a franchise-record-tying 15-game win streak, though, revived Bostons 2026 campaign.Even so, not everything has gone right for Boston amid this mostly remarkable stretch. Perhaps most notably, infielder Curtis Mead, whom the Red Sox acquired in a trade with the Washington Nationals on July 25, suffered a fractured wrist in his first game with his new team and is reportedly expected to miss most, if not all, of the remaining regular-season games.During Saturdays series-opening win over the Dodgers, four-time All-Star Willson Contreras left the game early. The first baseman was hit in the helmet by a 95-mph fastball from L.A. righty Will Klein in the third inning. Although the Red Sox held out Contreras for precautionary reasons, hes in concussion protocol nonetheless. Even so, Boston found a way to dispatch the Dodgers and improve to 4-1 on their seven-game California road trip, which started with the Red Sox taking three of four from the Athletics.Obviously the month of July was incredible and necessary with where we were at, Tracy said, per MLB.com. We probably didnt have to do that well, but it was necessary that we played better and got on a run and we got on a heck of a run. We have to continue that now because were playing very good baseball.

Anthony Weaver says the sky is the limit for Nate Wiggins
The Baltimore Ravens have never questioned Nate Wiggins' athletic ability. Why would they? He's slim at a listed 182 pounds or so, but he's every bit the freak of nature of a man who's 30 pounds heavier. Long before he arrived in the black and purple, Wiggins established himself as one of the most gifted defensive backs in his draft class. His blazing speed was already evident before he posted a 4.28-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, a number that still turns heads whenever it's mentioned. Unfortunately, he was unable to finish his workouts due to a hip flexor strain. Now healthy for the first time in quite a while by his own admission, Wiggins believes he's finally able to perform at the level he expects of himself. That confidence is beginning to show on the practice field. It's year three, and he's been one of Baltimore's standout performers through the opening days of training camp.NATE @WigginNathanielpic.twitter.com/9kbWLeeGG2 Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) July 31, 2026Anthony Weaver sees every trait needed for greatnessThe Ravens' social media team isn't alone in its admiration for what he's doing. Defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver has certainly noticed. Asked about Wiggins after practice, Weaver didn't hesitate to praise the young cornerback's development. He sees a guy who he says is locked in. That's quite the compliment. "I see a guy that is laser focused, just laser focused on his craft. Nate, from an ability standpoint, intellect (and) traits, has it all to be a great one, so when you combine that with just where his mentality is right now and, obviously, his health, the sky is the limit, man. Really happy about Nate and his trajectory and where he is going."Talent has never been the question with Wiggins. What has encouraged Baltimore's coaching staff even more is the approach he's bringing to the field every day. Weaver believes Wiggins is pairing elite physical tools with an equally impressive commitment to improving his craft, a combination that often separates gifted athletes from future stars. That gives the Ravens every reason to believe his best football still lies ahead. For a player who has dealt with injuries in recent years, those comments carry even more significance. Baltimore isn't simply excited that Wiggins is healthy. The Ravens believe that good health will finally allow his talent and preparation to meet on the field.Anthony Weaver wants Baltimore's secondary playing as oneWeaver's optimism extended beyond Wiggins. While discussing the Ravens' secondary with the media, he pointed to the communication and chemistry developing throughout the defensive backfield during training camp."There are a bunch of guys, man... I think that back end, they are playing their butts off right now and they care. They are communicating with one another. We are doing everything we can right now, from early in camp and the offseason, we are trying to get confident; we are trying to learn it all. Now, we are trying to build confidence where hopefully we can flip that into a flow state at one point where all 11 of us are moving as one, and we all know where everybody is going to be. We can just attack."Weaver explained that learning the system is only part of the process. The ultimate objective is to reach a point where every defender reacts instinctively rather than thinking through assignments. That's the vision Baltimore is chasing. Wiggins' individual growth is an important part of it. Still, Weaver believes the Ravens' defense will reach its full potential only when every player operates with the same confidence, communication, and trust. If the early days of training camp are any indication, that process is already well underway. This article originally appeared on Ravens Wire: Anthony Weaver says the sky is the limit for Nate Wiggins
