    3-0: Marquette 102, Fraser Valley 65
I got an excuse to use a Michael Phillips photo, youd better believe Im using it! | Credit: Marquette UniversityThe 2026 summer tour of Canada is over for Marquette mens basketball, and I can happily report that the Golden Eagles went 3-0 on their three game set in Vancouver. They wrapped up the series with a 102-65 victory over Fraser Valley on Saturday afternoon.Of interest to the proceedings: Marquette did this shorthanded, as they were without Adrien Stevens due to illness. If you were watching the live stats and missed the update on Twitter, and thus wondered what was up: No reason to worry long term.Marquette G Adrien Stevens (illness) will not play today against Fraser Valley.#MUBB | #WeAreMarquette Marquette Mens Basketball (@MarquetteMBB) August 1, 2026And now, 2:40 of highlights from the game:As was the case with the first two games, there was no streaming broadcast of this contest. Everything youre about to read comes at you by way of the live stats and the box score.Quarter-By-Quarter ScoresFor the third game in a row, this was contested with four 10 minutes quarters.Quarter 1: Marquette 30, Fraser Valley 14Quarter 2: Fraser Valley 28, Marquette 27Quarter 3: Marquette 27, Fraser Valley 15Quarter 4: Marquette 18, Fraser Valley 8Yes, that is a quarter lost for Marquette, their one and only 10 minute loss of the tour. That 28 points is also the most that Marquette gave up in any of the 12 quarters that they played in Canada. Why do I have a feeling that fact had an impact on MU winning the second half 45-23?In any case, thats Marquette up 16 at the end of the first quarter, up 15 at halftime, up 27 after 30 minutes and then ultimately up 37 at the final horn. The largest lead was 40 points, which came at 97-57, off a Nolan Minessale and-1 with 4:21 left to go. Starting LineupG: Nigel JamesG: Damarius OwensG: Nolan MinessaleF: Royce ParhamC: Sananda FruOrder of SubstitutionsAs always, this is the order they checked in for the first time in the game.Ethan Johnston: 8:54, first quarterCaedin Hamilton: 6:42, first quarterAlex Egbuonu: 6:07, first quarterMichael Phillips: 5:24, first quarterJosh Clark: 4:09, first quarterIan Miletic: 2:42, first quarterColton Crowdis: 2:34, fourth quarterBraeden Brenn: 1:58, fourth quarterDid Not Play: The only two are Adrien Stevens, who was out with illness, and Nash Walker, who was not 100% cleared from labrum surgery a month ago and so we are not surprised that he was not active for the entire trip. That is the first action of the entire trip for Colton Crowdis and Braeden Brenn. We know Brenn as a walk-on for the past few years. Im feeling pretty confident about my idea to just skip writing a player preview for Crowdis in October.Four FactorsEffective Field Goal PercentageMarquette: 56.5%Fraser Valley: 36.0%Turnover RateMarquette: 18.8%Fraser Valley: 25.9%Offensive Rebounding RateMarquette: 45.9%Fraser Valley: 32.0%Free Throw RateMarquette: 53.6%Fraser Valley: 35.3%Points Per PossessionMarquette: 1.20Fraser Valley: 0.76Leading Scorer: Michael Phillips, with 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting in 17 minutesLeading Rebounder: Sananda Fru, with nine rebounds in 20 minutesLeading Passer: Nigel James, with seven assists in 22 minutesLeading Thief: Nigel James, Royce Parham (22 minutes), and Alex Egbuonu (18 minutes), each with three stealsLeading Swatter: Josh Clark, with three blocks in 15 minutesFoul Merchants: Nolan Minessale played just 14 minutes here because he had four personal fouls. He had two in the first 1:06 of the game and three by midway through the second quarter. I gotta point out that Minessale had four fouls in 23 minutes in the Calgary game, too. He had two in 20 minutes against Trinity Western, so no reason for full fledged panic here, although his fouls-per-40 numbers against top 100 opponents last season for St. Thomas were not good.Unanswered Run Of The Game16-0, from 1:06 left in the third to 3:52 left in the fourthI believe thats the only double-digit run of the game for the Golden Eagles, although they had several runs of 7 or 8 or 9 points in a row up til that point. Its not like MU was in danger before the run started, as the score was 81-57 with 70 seconds left in the third quarter. The Josh Clark Of It All10 points, six rebounds, three blocks, an assist, a steal, all in 15 minutes. Pretty good.5-for-8 shooting when hes really not supposed to be shooting from further than four feet away from the rim and a pair of turnovers? Not great for 15 minutes. But perhaps Im nitpicking. The good news is that Clark was on the floor as Marquette expanded their lead from seven points to 14 points in a three-plus minute stretch in the first quarter, making him a +7 in that part of the game. The eh news is that Clark was a +1 for his remaining 12ish minutes of action. The last six of that was the last six minutes of the game, and MU only expanded their lead by two points there, so Clark was a -1 for the other six. Marquette was firmly in control at that point and the first quarter minutes were actually important, so I dont want to go too far overboard. but the fact of the matter is that there remain signs that Clarks not impacting the game. The Ian Miletic Of It AllWith an 0-for-3 here, two of which were inside the arc attempts, Miletic is coming home from this trip after shooting 1-for-9 in 31 minutes. He went 0-for-4 from behind the three-point line across all three games. The TransfersOne last time, lets check in on Sananda Fru and Nolan Minessale, both of whom appear to be ticketed for spots in the starting lineup on opening night.Fru: 10 points on 3-for-9 shooting, 0-for-1 behind the three-point line, 4-for-6 from the free throw line, a team high nine rebounds, plus two fouls and three turnovers in 20 minutes.Minessale: 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting, 1-for-2 behind the three-point line, 2-for-3 from the free throw line, five rebounds, two assists, two steals, four fouls, and two turnovers in 14 minutes. There was enough other stuff going right for Marquette here that the turnovers didnt matter all that much, and besides: Nigel James committed four of MUs 16 giveaways in this game. 3-for-9 for Fru is not great, even if you just say 3-for-8 if you wipe out the three-point attempt. You have to figure that Minessale would have had a bigger impact on the game if not for two personal fouls almost immediately in the game and three by the midpoint of the second quarter. 11/5/2/2 is still a great 14 minute outing, and depending on what else was going on around him, I wouldnt exactly say no to that kind of performance in 29 minutes. With just a box score to muddle through, its hard to see everything or have everything important jump out at you. This is what I saw, what jumped out at me. What did you see in the stats that looks important to you? Recapping Day 4 of Chicago Bears training camp
The Chicago Bears were back at Halas Hall for their fourth practice of training camp on Friday. Despite a weather delay that forced it to be a closed practice, the Bears were able to get some work done in the rain. While the offense got off to an impressive start to training camp, it was the defense's turn to shine on Saturday, aided a little by the weather conditions. Quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense struggled to get into a rhythm, and the secondary was finally able to best what's been a dominant passing game. There were also some updates in position battles at left tackle and nickel cornerback in the final practice of this first week before the pads come on Monday.Let's recap Day 4 of Bears training camp:TakeawaysDefense finally wins the day: For the first three practices, it was the offense that dominated training camp. In fact, the passing game looked unstoppable. But the defense has finally closed the gap, and they had their best practice of the summer. According toAdam Hoge, it was a "bounce back day" for the defense, where safety Coby Bryant and the secondary shined. Bryant had "a really nice interception over the top on a Caleb Williams deep ball" and he "tracked it well."Herb Howardcalled it a "completely different day at practice" compared to the first three days, and he praised Bryant and cornerback Jaylon Johnson as the standouts. Bryant had the one pick of Williams, but Howard said he nearly had two more. Howard said the defense was "flying around all morning."Rough outing for Caleb William and passing game: After a dominant first three practices at training camp, quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense had their worst showing of the summer in the rain. According toHerb Howard, "Caleb was not sharp today with his accuracy nor timing. He and Luther Burden, dominant to this point in camp, could not sync up. It was a combination of timing, inaccuracy, and a drop." In the end-of-half two-minute drill, Williams threw three straight incompletions to Burden, perBear Report. Jeff Buckhalter added that Williams had a "few rough reps/attempts/near picks" during practice. The conditions certainly impacted the passing game, asAdam Hogenoted that there were "too many drops in the slick conditions too. Most of practice was in a light rain." According toZack Pearson, "felt like the first team offense couldnt get into a rhythm. Drops. Slipping."Left tackle rotation continued with Jedrick Wills Jr.: TheBearscontinued their rotation in their left tackle competition. On Days 1 and 2, it was Braxton Jones working with the starters. On Day 3, it was primarily Kiran Amegadjie. On Saturday, Jedrick Wills Jr. got his turn to work with the first-team offense, and Jones ran with the second team, perAdam Jahns. While Jones is the favorite to win the starting job, Chicago will continue to give everyone an opportunity to compete for the role, so expect the rotation to continue when the Bears return to the practice field on Monday, which will be the first padded workout of the summer.Jaylon Jones at nickel with the starters: Kyler Gordon remains sidelined with a calf injury on the physically unable to perform list, which has opened the door for competition at nickel cornerback. Jaylon Jones has primarily worked in the slot with the first-team defense while Cam Lewis has also gotten his opportunities Josh Blackwell and rookie Malik Muhammad have also gotten looks. But on Saturday, it was Jones working with the starting defense, according toJosh Buckhalter.Rookies Zavion Thomas, Jordan van den Berg flash: The Bears are hoping they receive some big contributions from their rookie class, and both wide receiver Zavion Thomas and defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg had a standout day. Thomas developed a nice rapport with backup quarterback Tyson Bagent, and the pair connected for a touchdown during a two-minute drill to end practice. According toMark Carman, Thomas got a "ton of balls" thrown his way on Saturday. Carman added that van den Berg "flashed" during a non-padded 1-on-1 session against rookie center Logan Jones. -- Alyssa BarbieriStudsS Coby Bryant: Coby Bryant stood out as arguably the best performer from Saturday's practice according to those in attendance. Bryant picked off quarterback Caleb Williams on a pass intended for wide receiver Maurice Alexander. He read the pass well and took advantage of an overthrow to bring in the pick.Bear Report's Zack Pearson notedthat Bryant could have had another interception later on.CB Jaylon Johnson: The defense as a whole won the day with Bryant leading the way with his interception, but Jaylon Johnson also stood out for his play as well.CHGO's Mark Carmansaw Johnson make a deflection on a pass that nearly led to an interception by Jack Sanborn.Mason Williams of theTimes of Northwest Indiananotesthe Bears had seven pass breakups during the practice.WR Zavion Thomas: It wasn't all bad for the offense on Saturday. Despite the defensive dominance for much of the day, the Bears offense was still able to find the end zone. Rookie receiver Zavion Thomas flashed with a touchdown to end practice. Quarterback Tyson Bagent found Thomas on a quick out route where the rookie reached the ball across the pylon for the score with Josh Blackwell in coverage. -- Brendan SugrueInjury updatesThe only notable absence from Saturday's practice was running back Kyle Monangai, who was not spotted on the field for the third straight day. It's worth noting that linebacker Jack Sanborn did exit practice early, but the reason is unknown. The players previously announced on the non-football injury and physically unable to perform lists were sidelined: linebacker T.J. Edwards, cornerback Kyler Gordon, offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo, safety Elijah Hicks, linebackers Keyshaun Elliott and Noah Sewell and defensive end Shemar Turner.HighlightsOh, hi @dae2walker pic.twitter.com/KAvdTZC3F9 Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) August 1, 2026.@_CobyBryant_'s been ballin' pic.twitter.com/9nWNcIN7h1 Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) August 1, 2026ZT with the TD pic.twitter.com/nDR3mEW9N4 Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) August 1, 2026Press conferences (Richard Hightower, Jaylon Johnson, Cole Kmet, Zavion Thomas)What's nextThe Bears have an off day on Sunday after their first four practices of the summer. The Cardinal Countdown: 35 Days Until Kickoff
CARSON HILBERT #35Height: 63Weight: 215lbPosition: KClass: RS FreshmanHometown: Louisville, KYSummary: I hit on the hometown hero Hilbert last year as the Cards snagged one of, if not the best, local kickers off the market from Trinity in 2025. Knowing we had Keller and Swaggy C in the mix not many expected the walk-on to see serious time as a true freshman, and there was a possibility that formula remained the same heading into 2026 with both vets still having eligibility. Then the transfer portal struck. With Cooper Ranvier leaving the program and heading out to Tennessee, Keller was the one elevated to the role of starter on paper but just like every position, it must be earned daily. As some Spring struggles came to light, the window for Carson to maybe slide in there as an alternative was opening wider by the day. Since that time the Cards did grab another transfer kicker off the market in Garth White, but Hilbert is still firmly in the running to win that spot if he performs well. The Cards have had some incredible kickers over the years, and under the Jeff Brohm era Louisville has played some extremely tight football games where 3 points can swing the outcome regularly. The starting kicker and kickoff specialist roles will an interesting battle in the fall, so dont be shocked if you see Carson win one of those before the year is over.

Bayern Munich eyeing VfB Stuttgarts Finn Jeltsch for future
Athens, Greece - March 31: Finn Jeltsch of Germany looks on during the UEFA U21 EURO 2027 Qualifier match between Greece and Germany at Apostolos-Nikolaidis-Stadium on March 31, 2026 in Athens, Greece. (Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images/DeFodi via Getty Images) | DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesAccording to a report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Heiko Niedderer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich is eyeing VfB Stuttgart center-back Finn Jeltsch as a defensive option for the future: Stuttgart centre-back Finn Jeltsch (20) is a player Bayern have on their list for the future. Bayern believe theyre well equipped at centre-back at the moment, but Jeltsch would be a candidate for when a spot opens up in the position in the coming windows.BFW AnalysisThis is not the first report linking Bayern Munich to Jeltsch, who is riding a bit of a heat wave at the moment. The 20-year-old is also rumored to be on Jrgen Klopps radar for the German national team.Jeltsch was a stabilizing force on what at times was a very shaky backline for Die Schwaben. Undoubtedly, Jeltsch is talented, but he does need some time to develop and make his game more well-rounded. With Dayot Upamecano (27, contract through 2030), Jonathan Tah (30, contract through 2029), Kim Min-jae (29, contract through 2028), and Hiroki It (27, contract through 2028) as the four current options at center-back, there is no room for Jeltsch at the moment, but that does not mean that Bayern Munich will not look at the VfB Stuttgart defender in 2027 or 2028.
