SPORTS.YAHOO.COM2025-26 Thunder player grades: Chet HolmgrenThe calendar has flipped to August. Which means we're in the dog days of the NBA's year-round calendar. Little will happen over the next two months as teams across the league prepare for the 2026-27 season. Before we move on, though, let's reflect one last time on last year. The Oklahoma City Thunder had a league-best 64-18 regular-season record. Juggling injuries all year, they overcame notable absences all year. Alas, they fell short of a second NBA championship with a 2026 Western Conference Finals exit.To reflect on their 2025-26 season, Thunder Wire will conduct player grades for all 20 players who suited up for them this past year. Second up is Chet Holmgren, who was an All-NBA player for the first time:2025-26 statistics:17.1 points8.9 rebounds1.7 assists1.9 blocks55.7% shooting36.2% 3-point shooting79.2% free-throw shootingAdvanced stats:True-shooting percentage:65.3%Usage rate:21.9%Win shares:9.1VORP:3.1Block percentage:6.4%Significant Percentile Finishes:Isolation scorer:66.1 percentileTransition scorer: 65.0 percentileP&R roller:84.3 percentilePost-up scorer:72.1 percentileCutter:75.4 percentilePutbacks: 89.7 percentileContract:2025-26:$13.7 million2026-27:$41.2 million2027-28:$44.5 million2028-29:$47.8 million2029-30:$51.1 million2030-31:$54.4 millionThoughts:When the Thunder added Holmgren, last year probably played out what they had hoped. After dealing with injuries in his first three seasons, he finally broke out. The 24-year-old became a first-time All-Star, All-NBA member and All-Defense honoree. He finished runner-up in Defensive Player of the Year. A household name for years, he finally lived up to the hype as a seven-footer rim protector who complements on offense. Sure, he won a championship the season before. But this was the best he looked at an individual level.Holmgren averaged career highs across the board. From points to rebounds. Out of necessity, too. With everybody else dealing with injuries, he was the one constant who helped Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The two All-NBA players carried the Thunder to another first seed. The traditional stats paint a pretty picture. And popping open the hood, the advanced metrics absolutely loved his game and made him out to be one of the league's best players. On offense, Holmgren figured things out. He simplified his bag. Mostly play-finishes with a sprinkle of shot-creation. That helped him be one of the more efficient scorers in the NBA. The seven-footer leveraged his size to finish over defenders in the paint. The outside jumper remained a weapon, too. Albeit, you just wish he'd take more attempts. Think the percentages warrant it.On defense, you know what Holmgren brings to the table. He's one of the best rim protectors. It's his bread and butter. The Thunder had the league-best defense again. And he anchored things down low. There's a reason why his on-off splits and advanced analytics view him as one of the most impactful players in the league. If it wasn't for Victor Wembanyama, he'd have one Defensive Player of the Year trophy in his case. Alas. Happens when you're playing in the era of lanky unicorns.Think everybody who's followed the NBA had anticipated Holmgren's leap. He was bound to become one of the top players. Injuries slowed his roll, but now we saw that in fruition. He's one of your textbook examples of a litmus test. The box-score stats might not jump off the page, but his value is measurable in other ways. Going back to his high school days, he's been a high-octane winner. That's not a coincidence. His ability to completely tilt the geometry of OKC's halfcourt defense gets undersold at a national level. But true hoop fans and analytic fanatics get why he earned a bunch of first-time honors last season.Moving Forward:Now, let's talk about where Holmgren can go from here. As awesome as he was for the entire season, you can't help but shake your head at just how bad he looked in OKC's final seven games. Let's give his breakout year its deserved nuance. Because there's a lot to break down in how things played out. Zooming out, the Thunder have an All-NBA talent. No debating that. 28 other teams would absolutely kill to have him on their team. Even with his one-team problems.Holmgren has been one of the league's best players since he joined the NBA. Ranging from an All-NBA player to fringe All-Star range, you're getting one of the 30 best players in the sport. Sure, he doesn't do it conventionally. You'll never see him make highlight-worthy plays of draining a bucket or crossing a defender over, but his constant presence on defense makes him indispensable. When he's healthy, he's one of the best rim protectors. That's been the case since he first suited up.And this past season, you didn't need to lay out a persuasive essay for why Holmgren is one of the game's best. The tape told you the whole story. As well as the advanced metrics. There's a reason there wasn't a huge fuss when he made an All-NBA team. No matter how you splice it up, he was one of the best players. And at 24 years old, there's zero reason to believe he can't continue that. Especially since he dominates most of the league on a pretty consistent basis. He was easily OKC's second-best player through two rounds of their recent NBA playoff run. Now, let's segue to his Kryptonite. The San Antonio Spurs. Specifically, Wembanyama. No way around it, Holmgren was putrid in the Western Conference Finals. He went from a hyper-efficient scorer to someone who was barely noticeable on the floor. As he faded into the background, his nonexistent loud moments in the epic seven-game series stood out for all of the wrong reasons. By the end of Game 7, he turned into OKC's scapegoat. Souring what was a breakout year filled with individual celebration and accolades. What do the Thunder do from here? Run it back. I know, I know. Holmgren's public opinion is at an all-time low. Even though he recently helped OKC win a championship, the NBA is a what-have-you-done-for-me-recently business. Always has been. Always will be. You're measured in your most recent game. That said, now is the time to back up the 24-year-old. He's just simply too talented and too important to give up on after one bad playoff series. One mad matchup shouldn't erase an entire body's worth of work. And the truth is, if you want to best the Spurs, you're going to need Holmgren. He's been too important to OKC's ascension to the NBA throne. You just hope that he can learn the lessons he needed to learn from this past series and grow from there. We won't truly know that answer until they square off in the NBA playoffs again. But you don't destroy an entire infrastructure out of pure anger. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJaguars Day 3 draft pick earning more opportunities early in campIt's early in training camp, but one Jacksonville Jaguars' Day 3 draft pick appears to be carving out a role for himself this upcoming season. At the top of the tight end depth chart for the Jaguars will be Brenton Strange and Nate Boerkircher, but when it comes to that third spot, fifth-round pick Tanner Koziol has seen his share of opportunities through three practices, ahead of Quintin Morris and Hunter Long in the early going.John Shipley of Jaguars on SI had this to say about Koziol."The Jaguars have seemed to throw a ton on his plate early on in training camp," Shipley wrote. "He has responded, too, making a highlight catch on Thursday and hauling in a touchdown on Friday."Koziol was a major pass-catching threat from the tight end position during his college career. If he keeps capitalizing on his opportunities, Koziol could see snaps this season as the third tight end in 13 personnel, or perhaps there could be some instances where he's the second tight end next to Strange when Jacksonville wants an added pass-catching presence.Matchups and in-game situations will play key roles in dictating the Jaguars' tight end usage. That said, Shipley also notes that we may "not be able to get a great idea for what his role can really look like until we see him block with pads on." As alluded to, Koziol was often a receiving option in college and less of a blocker. His ability to hold his own in that phase of the game could be important when it comes to holding off Morris for that third tight end role."It's also trying to put them in some positions that maybe are a little uncomfortable early on, like putting them in some positions that we got to go see what they can do in terms of that," Coen said of Boerkircher and Koziol's early workload. As we see a potential uptick this season in 12 and 13 personnel usage from the Jaguars, Koziol could end up playing a bigger role than originally expected if he continues to perform as he has. This article originally appeared on Jaguars Wire: Jaguars Day 3 draft pick earning more opportunities early in camp0 Comments 0 Shares 27 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReactions to the Dodgers acquiring Tarik Skubal from TigersDETROIT, MICHIGAN - JULY 24: Tarik Skubal #29 of the Detroit Tigers throws a second inning pitch against the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park on July 24, 2026 in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesJust minutes after the Dodgers dropped their second game in a row against the Boston Red Sox, they struck gold with a blockbuster deal that will define this years trade deadline. In a move that was widely expected to come to fruition, the Dodgers got their big catch of the deadline as they struck gold by acquiring Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. The Dodgers did not have to move that much prospect capital, as the return haul to Detroit includes outfielder Zyhir Hope, and pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith. With the Dodgers once again signifying their dominance in the trade market, here are some reactions to the Dodgers acquiring Skubal. Mike Petriello of MLB.com writes about how the Dodgers deal for Skubal could go down as the greatest deadline deal for an ace that weve ever seen, comparing the deal to the Brewers acquiring Hall of Fame pitcher C.C. Sabathia in 2008. Were talking pitchers as legendary and accomplished as Johnson, Scherzer, Sabathia and Verlander; were talking about some great seasons from solid hurlers like Jeff Samardzija, Luis Castillo, Yu Darvish and Bartolo Colon; were talking about therare post-1986 Big June Tradein Freddy Garcia; were talking about the best season of Sidney Ponsons career, and that one only barely. The Dodgers deal for Skubal now fortifies arguably the best rotation in baseball, with Sonja Chen of MLB.com noting that the team now boasts a starting staff of at least five potential aces. At full strength, the Dodgers six-man rotation in the regular season figures to include Yamamoto, Skubal, Snell, Ohtani, Glasnow and one of Roki Sasaki, Justin Wrobleski or Emmet Sheehan. In the postseason, when that group is whittled down to four, that means Wrobleski, Glasnow, Sasaki and Sheehan could all be options for the bullpen, with the latter three potentially giving L.A. some much-needed reinforcements from the right-hand side. The rich continue to get richer, and this latest move for Skubal proves the Dodger simply dont care whether they are ruining baseball or not, notes Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times in his latest column. So the Dodgers grabbed him. Of course they did. They are rushing full bore toward that three-peat and, to the delight of the most appreciative fans in baseball, nothing is going to get in their way.The rest of baseball will hate them for this. They dont care. Critics will say this is yet another example of how they are ruining the game. They could give a rip. As he sets to join his new team, Skubal himself commented on his move to the Dodgers, noting that he although the past day has been a roller coaster, hes excited for the opportunity, per Jack Harris of the California Post. Im excited to be a Dodger, he said. Im excited to get down there and meet all those guys, and chase three championships in a row. Thats hard to do. So Im excited to be a part of that. But yeah, its a lot of different emotions. Definitely kind of a roller coaster a little bit.Yoshinobu Yamamoto was one of the first Dodgers to share their reaction to the Skubal trade, as he discussed the move following his start against Boston on Saturday. I was hearing some rumors about that, but then it actually happened. Im pretty surprised.Jeff Passan of ESPN, who originally broke the news of Skubal heading to the Dodgers, joined SportsCenter on Saturday night to discuss the real possibility of the team solidifying their chances at a three-peat. The Dodgers are going to have a starting pitching advantage in every series that theyre in all eyes will be on the Dodgers this October.0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSerie A giants set to return for Liverpool starSerie A giants set to return for Liverpool starCurtis Jones Transfer Latest as Inter Milan Test Liverpools ResolveInter Milan are doing what smart clubs do. They have identified a player with quality, versatility and resale value, then moved when the contract situation gives them leverage. According to Caught Offside, the Italian champions are stepping up their pursuit of Curtis Jones and believe they can land him for less than Liverpool want. This is where the numbers matter. Inter are reportedly ready to go to around 35 million, while Liverpool want closer to 40 million. That is not some dramatic gulf. In modern transfer terms, it is a small gap and usually the sort that gets closed by add-ons, structure, or a future sell-on clause.IMAGO | Anfield IndexInter Milan See Value in Curtis JonesThe logic is obvious. Jones gives Inter energy, press resistance and the ability to play in multiple midfield roles. If Davide Frattesi leaves, they need someone who can carry the ball and cope with the demands of a top side. Jones fits that profile. He also brings Premier League experience, which carries weight when clubs assess whether a player can handle pressure.Liverpool, for their part, are reluctant to lose an academy graduate, particularly one appreciated by Andoni Iraola. That makes sense too. Homegrown players matter, and Jones has qualities that managers trust. Still, if a player is entering the final year of his deal, sentiment only goes so far. Clubs either renew, sell, or accept diminished control.Liverpool Face Pressure from RivalsInter may feel urgency because other clubs are circling. Tottenham have been linked, Nottingham Forest have shown interest, and Arsenal have also been mentioned. That changes the equation. Premier League sides are often better placed to meet the asking price, and if Liverpool sense stronger domestic interest, their negotiating stance hardens immediately. For now, this looks like a transfer battle defined by timing and valuation. 35 million feels close, but close is not enough. If Inter really want Curtis Jones, they may have to stop trying to win the margin and simply meet Liverpool somewhere near their figure. Our ViewFrom a concerned Liverpool supporters perspective, this is the sort of story that creates frustration because it feels avoidable. Curtis Jones is not a fringe body to shift for convenience. He is homegrown, understands the club, and gives you reliable depth across midfield. Those players are harder to replace than people think, especially when you start looking at the market and seeing ordinary options priced at 30 million and above. If the contract is genuinely running down, then the club have left themselves exposed. That is the blunt truth. You either commit to the player earlier or you cash in from a position of strength. Letting it drift to the final year invites exactly this kind of opportunism from a club like Inter. There is also a football point here. Iraola will need energy, intelligence and flexibility in midfield. Jones gives you all three. He may not start every week, but not every useful player has to be a guaranteed starter. Liverpool need a squad, not just an XI.If Inter want him, fine. Pay the full value. If they will not, Liverpool should be perfectly comfortable keeping him, using him and trying to renew. Selling good academy players too cheaply is bad business and worse squad building.Source: Caught Offside0 Comments 0 Shares 35 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCardinals' new replay boards show they're catching up to rivalsRemember when the Arizona Cardinals hired Mike LaFleur, back in February? It was as if a wave of cautious optimism swept through the Valley. A frustrating, meandering coaching search had found a conclusion that fomented hope. LaFleur, after all, had spent the previous three years working in one of the NFLs best organizations (the Los Angeles Rams), under the sports best offensive mind (Sean McVay).Since McVay was hired in 2017, the Rams are 92-57. In that same span, the Cardinals are 54-94-1, a franchise wandering in footballs wilderness, desperately searching for a path to emulate their rivals. Here, in LaFleur, they believed that they found it.We dont yet know what that looks like on Sundays, when it really matters. NFL history is littered with those who worked under brilliant coaches, only to struggle when cut loose on their own. But if you peer toward the end zones at training camp and crane your neck, youll find a microcosm of what it looks like when an organization is infused with new ideas.Immediately after each snap of 11-on-11 drills, the jumbotrons at State Farm Stadium display an all-22 replay. One shows the end zone angle; one shows the sideline angle. By the time the next play begins, the previous one has typically been shown three or four times. It's something we had at the Rams that was extremely beneficial, LaFleur said. It's going around the league now.The Rams, under McVay, were the first to implement the technology, back in 2018. It spread to Minnesota in 2022, when Kevin OConnell left his post as McVays offensive coordinator to take the Vikings head-coaching job. Two years later, Raheem Morris brought it to Atlanta, where he was hired as the head coach after three years as McVays defensive coordinator. The Lions, Eagles and Seahawks are among those who have since experimented with it.Perhaps its a coincidence that those organizations are among the NFLs best. Certainly, having access to a few replays wont immediately catapult the Cardinals into the leagues elite. Or, perhaps, its emblematic. Good organizations open their eyes and ears, scouring the sport for ideas. By hiring LaFleur, the Cardinals aimed to tap into that network. With the replay boards, the benefit is simple. It is instant feedback, senior defensive analyst Teryl Austin said. So that way, the same mistakes don't continue to happen over and over in practice. You have instant feedback, you can get things corrected and fixed immediately.Austin, who spent nine years as an NFL defensive coordinator, appreciates the objectivity provided by replays. For as long as he has been in the league, players would debate him on mid-practice coaching points. Now, theres no room for uncertainty. No, no, this is what happened, Austin can tell his players. The benefit might be most pronounced for backups. As the fourth-string quarterback, Kedon Slovis rarely gets live practice reps. So from the sidelines, he tries to put himself in the mind of the active quarterback, going through his reads as if he were playing. Now, he can check whether his instincts are right in real time, looking up at the video boards to see whether he made the correct read."You have 30 seconds of dead air time so that gives you something to do," Slovis said. "It's like you're watching tape."All of this, LaFleur believes, makes the Cardinals operation more efficient. If we're doing this the right way, this should streamline and make our post-practice meetings as a staff go way quicker, LaFleur said. Cause we've already seen practice, and we've seen the corrections. So it's extremely beneficial. In training camp, the days are already long enough. Players go through hours of film review early in the morning at the team hotel, then work through a lifting session before heading to the stadium for walkthrough and practice. By the time the coaches reconvene in the evening to break down the film from practice, their days are already approaching 12 hours. Every minute is valuable. In the regular season, that effect may be even more pronounced. The staff has only three days of practice to correct mistakes from the previous week and install a new game plan. So, at LaFleurs behest, the Cardinals are installing two big screens on the sidelines at their Tempe practice facility, meaning theyll get the benefit of live replays all season long. It's among a series of changes that he's brought over from the Rams, along with afternoon practices and increased usage of 11-on-11 drills. It might not instantly translate to wins. But over time, these are the small tweaks that can accumulate the Cardinals hope into something bigger.Cardinals place DT on IRThe Cardinals placed defensive tackle P.J. Mustipher on injured reserve, effectively ending his season. Mustipher was called into significant action on an injury-riddled defensive line last season, playing 300 snaps. But he struggled to make an impact, finishing the season with three pressures and zero sacks, and was likely below the cut line on this year's roster as camp began. In his place, the Cardinals signed Brodric Martin, a 2023 third-round pick of the Detroit Lions. Martin has appeared in six career games across his three NFL seasons. This article originally appeared on Arizona Republic: Cardinals' new replay boards show they're catching up to rivals0 Comments 0 Shares 38 Views 0 Reviews
