Who could have seen this coming? (Everyone.) Just days after Taysom Hill announced he won't be returning to the New Orleans Saints this season, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton told Cynthia Frelund and Steve Wyche of NFL Network that Denver will "explore bringing in" Hill. Payton was coaching the Saints in 2017 when the Green Bay Packers waived Hill, who was a rookie quarterback at the time. Payton decided to claim him off waivers after watching film of another Packers player. "I was looking at Max McCaffrey at Green Bay it was midnight for a practice squad [spot], and I kept noticing this No. 7 at quarterback," Payton recalled in 2024."We got more tape, and it was Taysom Hill. There was a play where he scrambled 43 yards for a touchdown. If you watched it, when he got to the end zone, the whole bench emptied ... I called [Jeff] Ireland in, and I said, What do you see here? Well, you see a fast quarterback, but then watch what happens afterwards. Aug. 2The countdown to another high school football season is over.Teams across the Miami Valley have preparations underway with the goal of winning conference championships and making postseason runs. It all will culminate with state championship weekend in early December in Canton.From new coaches and rule changes to divisional shifts and must-see early-season matchups, there is plenty for fans to know before kickoff. Here are five things to know as the 2026 Ohio high school football season gets ready to begin.The calendarThe 18-week journey from the start of camps to the state championship games will be filled with memorable moments as always.It all starts with practices, which officially began Saturday, Aug. 1. The first set of scrimmages in the area begin Thursday, Aug. 6 and continue through Aug. 14.The first Friday night of the season will be Aug. 21. A few games in the area will get underway the night before as well.The 10-week regular season concludes the weekend of Oct. 23. The first round of the OHSAA postseason will be Oct. 30. The top four teams in each region will again receive byes into the quarterfinal round starting Nov. 6.This season will see the Division I, II, III and V state championship games take place on Friday, Dec. 4 one of which will move to Thursday. The D-IV, VI and VII championship games will be on Saturday, Dec. 5.Coaching movesRyan Jones moves over from Versailles to take the role at Troy.A trio of moves in the SWBL see Matt Root now in charge at Edgewood, Brad Hunt taking over at Monroe, and Joe Fullenkamp at Brookville.There are two OHC changes with Cooper Chaffin taking over at Greenon, and Tim Melvin getting the coach role at Triad. Geron Stokes is back at Urbana. Zach Williams was hired to lead Wilmington.Rule changesThere are a few changes to the rule book for the 2026 season.The National Federal of State High School Associations approved play cards to be worn on the wrist or belt areas of the uniform.Any fumble that falls forward and goes out of bounds before it is recovered will be returned to the original spot where the fumble occurred.Players will not be allowed to use their hands to slap an opponent's head, while some mouth protector attachments will be restricted.Officials will be placing an emphasis on defenseless player and targeting fouls. They also will emphasize sportsmanship, and getting players to follow equipment rules.No league realignmentWhile many recent years have seen schools leave one conference and begin their tenure in another, the 2026-27 school year will be status quo in the Miami Valley.Starting in the Fall of 2027, however, the Central Buckeye Conference, Ohio Heritage Conference, Southwestern Buckeye League, and Three Rivers Conference all will look different with Bethel, Dayton Christian, Greenon, Riverside and Talawanda set to complete league switches.New two-year enrollment cycle and competitive balance counts start this season and with it numerous OHSAA division changes.One of the most notable reassignments sees reigning D-VII state champion St. Henry going up to D-VI.Troy which finished the 2025 season as the top seed in Region 2 moves back down to D-II.Two GWOC schools are on the move again as Miamisburg goes back up to D-I, while Northmont was expected to go down to D-II, but petitioned to stay in Division I.A trio of Butler County schools are all moving up to D-II Badin (due to competitive balance number adjustments), Ross and Talawanda.Monroe bumps down to D-III. West Carrollton does the same after CB adjustments.Other moves upward include Region 24 champ Coldwater going up to D-V, as well as Bethel (D-III), Thurgood Marshall (D-III), Northridge (D-IV), Dayton Christian (D-V), and Stivers (D-V).Going down are Dunbar (D-IV), Brookville (D-V), Northwestern (D-V), Versailles (D-VI), and Triad (D-VII).Tecumseh (D-III) and Kenton Ridge (D-IV) had enrollment bumps that would have moved both of them up one division before CB adjustments kept them where they were last year. Alter (D-III) and Troy Christian (D-VI) had the reverse occur, staying put instead of going down.Significant moves across the state include reigning D-III state champion Columbus Bishop Watterson going up to D-II after CB, as is runner-up Toledo Central Catholic. D-V champion Liberty Center also moves down to D-VI.Firing out of the gateThe Kettering rivalry of Alter vs. Fairmont gets the season started on Thursday, Aug. 20. Week 1 will get underway in full force with the first Friday slate taking place the following evening. St. Xavier at Lakota West, Centerville at Lakota East, and Winton Woods at Springfield are among the exciting games.Week 2 has several intriguing matchups as Fairmont goes to Trotwood, Wayne hosts St. Xavier, and league play starts in the GMC with Lakota East playing at Lakota West, as well as in the MVL when Troy visits Xenia.Lakewood St. Edward plays at Wayne in a marquee Week 3 game. The same night sees Middletown visit Fairfield, and Trotwood facing Springfield.

Aug. 2Brad Chandler has earned a few headlines in recent weeks as the new athletic director at Wright State.Twenty-two years ago, the Livingston County Daily Press and Argus in Howell, Michigan, gave him attention for a different reason."Howell's scouting report had every indication that Novi's Brad Chandler was a good player," sports writer Andy Karl wrote in February 2004, "but the Highlanders didn't know about his shooting ability until Friday night."'He is one of the better guards in the league, and he was always in our scouting reports that he could drive well," Howell senior Eddie Chodkowski said. "He never showed that he can shoot in the games that we watched.' ""Chandler sunk five 3-pointers en route to a 21-point effort, as Novi edged Howell in the closing seconds, 42-39."Chandler, now 39, was a senior that season at Novi High School, which is located 31 miles northwest of Detroit. He enrolled at Michigan State University later that year and then attended the University of Toledo College of Law. His path to a career in college athletics began there with a graduate assistant job in NCAA compliance at Toledo.Sports have always been a part of Chandler's life."I had an older brother and a younger brother," Chandler said. "It was always just something we did. It was basketball, baseball, football. I was the point guard, the pitcher, shortstop and quarterback. I think that's kind of where I developed my leadership skills."Having brothers, it was just all we did. It was just sports. It was backyard baseball. It was pickup basketball. We had a little court in our basement. It wasn't video games. It wasn't Legos or computers or anything like that. It was just all sports with my brothers."That's been Chandler's life ever since, through stops at Ohio State, Arizona State and most recently Bradley, where he spent the last five years, rising to the position of deputy athletics director.Chandler started his new job on July 20 after being introduced at a press conference on June 26. His first priority was meeting with as many people as possible"People ask, 'What's your vision?' " Chandler said, "and I don't have that yet because I want to see where we're at and talk to stakeholders, talk to donors."Chandler's athletic department made news in his first week by announcing it was searching for a jersey patch sponsorship. This is the first year the NCAA is allowing that."Everyone had kind of been clamoring for jersey patches because of the sponsorship dollars that are attached to that," Chandler said. "When I got here, it was like, 'Hey, we need to get this out to the masses instead of trying to have single conversations with Joe from Joe's Taco Shop.' Let's put that out to the world. This is available as an opportunity to really partner with a big brand in the area, with a really, really good basketball program, and then also you get your jersey patch on baseball, which is playing on national television and ESPN, and hopefully volleyball is playing in the NCAA tournament. There's some good branding opportunities for local businesses."Jersey patch sponsorships are only the latest change for college athletics, which has experienced a major transformation in Chandler's career."It's funny because starting my career in compliance at Ohio State, we were dealing with a major infraction over benefits and dollar amounts," Chandler said, "and then I'm at Bradley and negotiating with 18-to-22-year-olds and their agents."Chandler has the knowledge to handle these changes. He majored in finance at Michigan State, a school he picked in part because his mom and dad met there while they were students.Two Michigan State basketball players Maurice Joseph, the former head coach at George Washington who's now an assistant at Richmond, and Travis Walton, who's now a trainer were his suite mates. Chandler hoped to join Tom Izzo's program as a student manager, but it never worked out.Chandler said his dad was an accountant and his brother and sister are accountants."I was a little bit of a black sheep," Chandler said. "I went to law school, thinking I'll be a tax attorney or something, and got involved in the athletics department."At Toledo, Chandler was a graduate assistant in his second and third years of law school. He looked at Toledo's AD, Mike O'Brien, and said, "I want to be that guy, instead of doing what my other buddies are doing, going out to the courthouse or working at a law firm."Chandler had several job offers after graduating from law school and decided not to even take the bar exam because he was so focused on getting into college athletics. That law degree continues to pay off, however, because of the complexities of the jobs he has held over the years."Especially with the landscape of college athletics and everything that's been going on with the lawsuits and the NCAA's kind of got a target on its back, I think it's helped more recently," Chandler said. "But going through law school, the way that we're trained and taught to analyze and write and speak, I think was just really helpful in my career as well."In his early days at Wright State, Chandler has gotten to know men's basketball coach Clint Sargent better. Sargent, who guided Wright State to an NCAA tournament berth in his second season, was a part of the search committee that hired Chandler."It's no secret the men's basketball coach is very important," Chandler said, "and we have a really good one here. That also kind of made the job attractive. We've got a really good program built, and we have a really good guy in that seat. He's passionate in the way he runs his program. I've been able to watch practices and hear him speak to his guys and speak to his staff. He's impressive."Wright State's baseball and volleyball programs are two other standouts. Chandler wants Wright State to do a better job of selling the baseball program."Unless you know college baseball, you don't know that Wright State baseball is dominant in the league," he said. "We need to continue to be dominant and also to tell that story. We've had some great success in volleyball. We've got to keep that rolling. Volleyball as a sport's growing like crazy."

We are down to the final two teams in chase for a Massachusetts Little League baseball state championship.We began the weekend with four teams in the bracket. Now, on Sunday, Aug. 2 Section two winner, Bridgewater will take on Section 3 winner Parkway (West Roxbury/Roslindale) in the championship game of the state tournament at the Holden CRA complex at 459 Main St.The victor advances to represent team Massachusetts in the Little League New England Regional.It's a rematch of the teams' first meeting two days ago where Parkway beat Bridgewater 8-2. The Los Angeles Dodgers landed the top prize of the MLB trade deadline on Saturday night, acquiring Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. Most baseball fans and media likely arent surprised that the Dodgers were the team to get Skubal. They have a way of getting the top players available, whether in trade or free agency. And MLB players feel the same way.Milwaukee Brewers closer Trevor Megill voiced those sentiments when asked about Skubal going to the Dodgers after the trade was reported. The development is a one-two punch to the Brewers, who will likely compete with the Dodgers for the National League pennant and hoped they would be the team to add Skubal for their playoff drive. I dont think anybodys surprised he went there, Megill told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinels Todd Rosiak with a laugh. When they came out the other day and said they were gonna be greedy, I think the whole world could take that serious, that theyd probably make that happen. Our job is just to play baseball with the team they give us and the guys in this room, he added. We see [Brewers general manager] Matt [Arnold] in here a lot the last couple of days sure hes pretty busy but were just being patient, seeing what happens. If not, lets just go with what weve got. At 69-41 going into Sundays play, the Brewers are a half-game ahead of the Dodgers for the best record in the National League and MLB overall. Adding Skubal could have improved Milwaukees chances of finishing ahead of the Dodgers, getting a first-round bye in the playoffs and having home-field advantage in a possible postseason matchup. Instead, its the Dodgers who will receive a boost from the back-to-back American League Cy Young Award winner, teaming him up with an already formidable starting rotation that includes Yoshinobu Yamamoto with Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow soon to return from injury. But Milwaukee still has nearly two days before the Aug. 3 trade deadline at 6 p.m. ET and several other starting pitchers are available, including the Minnesota Twins Joe Ryan, Robbie Ray of the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels left-hander Reid Detmers and Skubals former Tigers teammate Casey Mize. The Brewers have a strong pitching staff of their own, leading the NL with a 3.48 ERA (and a starters ERA of 3.36). Ace Jacob Misiorowski is having a Cy Young Award-caliber season, Shane Drohan is impressing as a rookie (3.48 ERA, 9.1 strikeouts per 9 innings) and Kyle Harrison is set to return from the injured list this week. But the rotation could use a replacement for Brandon Woodruff, out for the remainder of the season after shoulder surgery.
