Locker was cleared out last homestand Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) August 2, 2026Now, there have been rumors (or scuttlebutt, even, as Bowman himself described it as a few days ago) for a while that whatever was ailing Spencer Strider was enough to where it didnt seem likely that the right-hander would be back in action any time soon and the fact that his locker has been cleared out seems to confirm that he likely wont be coming back any time soon. If so, then so ends another frustratingly injury-plagued season for Strider ever since having internal brace surgery on his throwing elbow back in April 2024. Strider was only able to pitch 39 innings this season where he ended up with an ERA of 5.31 (126 ERA-) and a FIP of 5.36 (129 FIP-) a far cry from the numbers he was putting up in 2023 when he was one of the most electric pitchers in baseball at the time. Ever since the surgery, hes been trying to figure out a new way to pitch and adjust to what his arm is capable of throwing and unfortunately, injuries have played a big role in tripping Strider up and stunting any progress that he can make. Assuming he doesnt come back this season, this is yet another stumbling block for Strider and really unfortunate considering all the effort thats gone into making his way back from the injury. Meanwhile, the point that Bowman was ultimately trying to address in that linked post is clear: The Atlanta Braves need starting pitching help. There are far more question marks than answers when it comes to the starting rotation and heroics from Martn Prez aside, that is not what you want to have to choose from when it comes t a Postseason roster and any type of playoff series rotation. The Braves absolutely have to address their starting rotation, especially now that they likely wont have Strider to rely on going forward in 2026.

He can make guys miss, he has a great awareness of defenders and space out there on the field, but he also has great ball skills. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.The Detroit Tigers made a massive decision for the future of the franchise late Saturday night, agreeing to trade Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for three prospects.Detroit's haul for Skubal included outfielder Zyhir Hope, right-handed pitcher River Ryan, and right-handed pitcher Brady Smith. So, how did the Tigers do in their blockbuster Skubal trade with the Dodgers?Well, unfortunately, Bradford Doolittle of ESPN handed the Tigers a lousy grade for this deal, giving Detroit a weak "D" grade for the three-player package for their Cy Young-winning ace.Tigers receive lousy 'D' grade from ESPN for Tarik Skubal trade"Tigers grade: D," Doolittle writes. "Detroit's return in this deal feels like a bad dream. OK, let's calm down..."That initial reaction from Doolittle tells the whole story. While it might be a bit of an overreaction, the fact that it could even be a thought shows just how shaky this trade is for Detroit.Zyhir Hope is, fittingly, the biggest reason to have hope that this return would be worth it. He's a 21-year-old outfield prospect with a ton of upside. But, Josue De Paula or Mike Sirota, both outfield prospects, might've been better gets.The real trouble with this trade, though, comes with the return of Ryan and Smith. For starters, Ryan is about to be 28 years old, and he's a year removed from a serious elbow injury.Ryan is an old prospect who, while under club control for a while, is a big question mark due to his injury and inconsistencies on the mound.Smith is 21 years old, but isn't nearly as highly rated a prospect as Hope or even Ryan. He has a 4.72 ERA in his pro career, which doesn't exactly make for an exciting outlook. There's still potential there, but Smith seems to be far from the big leagues at this point.MORE:Red Sox predicted to trade for Tigers Gleyber Torres at deadlineOverall, Doolittle sums up this three-player prospect return with a simple, but brutal line: "... but this whole thing is mildly depressing."Whether it was getting a bit more from the Dodgers in this trade, or trying more seriously to goad the Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays, or some other contender to offer a better prospect package, this return doesn't exactly bring a ton of excitement.While it's hard to say whether this was the best the Tigers could get for Skubal, who did have mid-season surgery and will be a free agent after 2026 to lower his trade value, it's hard not to feel underwhelmed by this return package.Hope is a fun prospect to acquire, but Ryan and Smith leave a lot to be desired. If it were Emmet Sheehan instead of Ryan, or even Justin Wrobleski, this deal would've felt a whole lot better. It's just a risky trade, and one that has Doolittle pessimistic.The Tigers received a "D" grade for their haul in exchange for their beloved franchise ace coming off back-to-back Cy Young seasons. The Chicago Bears wrapped their first four practices of training camp at Halas Hall, where there were some notable headlines and storylines before the pads come on Monday.The first three days of training camp was dominated by the offense, where quarterback Caleb Williams and the passing game appeared unstoppable at times. Williams spread the ball around to his arsenal of weapons, and Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, Colston Loveland and Kalif Raymond all shined. But the defense finally stepped up on Day 4, where they finally won a practice amid sloppy, rainy conditions. With the pads set to come on Monday, things are about to ramp up.With the first four practices of camp in the books, here's a look at the biggest winners and losers so far this summer.Winner: QB Caleb WilliamsWith the exception of Saturday's soggy practice, Caleb Williams has been near-flawless to open training camp. Williams has led a dominant passing game, spreading the ball around to his array of weapons, including receivers Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III, as well as tight end Colston Loveland. Williams has been sharp, accurate and confident. According to one fan, @CalebIsHim, "Without a doubt Caleb Williams is playing miles better than a single training camp Ive seen from last year. Its quite literally a different QB over last offseason." Williams' leadership was also on display when during Friday's practice he got fired up at his teammates when they weren't lined up right. To close out the week, cornerback Jaylon Johnson hailed Williams as the best quarterback he's ever played with in Chicago.Loser: CB Kyler GordonCornerback Kyler Gordon has been one of the biggest losers of the offseason, and that's carrying over into training camp. Gordon started the summer on the physically unable to perform list with a calf injury, and he's missed the first four practices. The frustration has been evident from the coaching staff, and it's also opened the door for a competition at nickel cornerback. Jaylon Jones and Cam Lewis have primarily worked with the first-team defense in the first four practices. While Gordon will have an opportunity to win back his role -- there's no denying he's the best -- he's going to have to earn back the trust of this coaching staff. That starts with getting back on the field.Winner: TE Colston LovelandAfter his sensational rookie season, it shouldn't come as a surprise that tight end Colston Loveland has been an early standout during training camp. Loveland's connection with Caleb Williams continues to thrive, and he's been a popular target in what's been a dominant passing game. According toChris Emma, "those two have their connection going early in camp." Loveland was on the receiving end of multiple touchdowns from Williams on Day 3, including the highlight of the day with "Williams laser(ing) a pass through traffic to Colston Loveland for a touchdown." Clay Harbor noted that Loveland "looks bigger running good routes soft natural hands lining up everywhere." It's been another strong start for Chicago's breakout candidate.Loser: RB Kyle MonangaiThe Bears were pretty lucky in terms of injuries to start training camp, where the only notable absence -- outside of those on the non-football injury and physically unable to perform lists -- was running back Kyle Monangai. After appearing for Day 1 of camp, Monangai missed three consecutive practices. With Monangai sidelined, veteran Salvon Ahmed got an opportunity to work with the second-team offense. During Friday's practice, perChris Emma, "Ahmed is getting a good audition out of the Bears backfield. Hes healthy again and looking to showcase his better form from the past." While Monangai will no doubt be the RB2 when he returns, it's allowing other players a chance to shine.Winner: Bears receiversEvery day through the first four practices, there was at least one Bears receiver among the biggest studs. There's a reason that the passing game, with the exception of Saturday's rain-soaked practice, has dominated so far in training camp. Rome Odunze was praised for the first three practices of camp, where he's looked "healthy and explosive," per Clay Harbor. Luther Burden III is primed for a breakout season, and he hasn't disappointed so far this summer. He's become a favorite target for Caleb Williams, as one of the most targeted pass catchers. Mark Carman noted that Burden is "just starting to tap into his potential. Still learning," which bodes well for the future.Veteran newcomer Kalif Raymond was the standout on Thursday, which was a "highlight day" for Raymond, per Brad Biggs, catching passes from Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent. The biggest came on a 54-yard bomb for a touchdown from Williams during 11-on-11 over cornerback Tyrique Stevenson,according toCHGO's Adam Jahns.NotedClay Harbor: "He was one of the biggest winners of practice. Looked very quick great routes." Even Jahdae Walker and rookie Zavion Thomas have impressed as they work primarily with backup quarterback Tyson Bagent.Loser: OL Kiran AmegadjieThe Bears have another open battle for the starting left tackle job, and despite failing to make an impact last summer in this very competition, former third-round pick Kiran Amegadjie already appears behind. After Braxton Jones worked with the starters for the first two days, Amegadjie got his opportunity on Friday, and it was a rough showing. He struggled during a non-padded practice against Austin Booker, who beat him a couple times and forced Caleb Williams out of the pocket, according toZack Pearson. It's certainly notable that Amegadjie actually got work with the first-team offense, but he's going to need a stronger showing, especially once the pads come on.Winner: S Coby Bryant, CB Jaylon JohnsonThe offense dominated the defense for the first three days, but it was a couple of defensive backs who stood out on Friday and Saturday. Cornerback Jaylon Johnson feels a "night and day" difference from last year with his health, and it's already showed on the field. Johnson recorded the first interception of Caleb Williams during a 7-on-7 red zone drill on Day 3, per Adam Jahns, and he was a standout again on Day 4 alongside safety Coby Bryant. The veteran free-agent addition was the biggest standout from Saturday, where according to Herb Howard, not only did Bryant pick off Williams, but he could've had two more.
