'No excuses if you want to play for India': The philosophy that shaped Auqib Nabi
NEW DELHI: There was a time when Auqib Nabi didn't own a pair of bowling spikes. For his first U-19 trial in Jammu & Kashmir, the fast bowler from Baramulla borrowed a pair from a friend. When he eventually earned selection, fate threw up another twist. The friend who had lent him the spikes didn't make the squad. Auqib borrowed another pair from him and played his entire first U-19 tournament in borrowed shoes.Today, Auqib is making a name for himself with a skill that many fast bowlers spend years trying to master: the ability to swing the ball both ways. He has now earned his maiden India call-up, with the 29-year-old seamer from Jammu & Kashmir replacing the injured Jasprit Bumrah in India's Test squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.Nabi has picked up 104 wickets over the last two Ranji Trophy seasons, virtually breaking the selection door down with his performances. He was also part of the India A squad that toured Sri Lanka recently, where he claimed six wickets in two First Class matches.Yet, the road to the Indian dressing room wasn't built in fancy academies or elite fast-bowling programmes. It was shaped by a long journey, borrowed equipment and an obsession with learning."My parents are government school teachers. Initially, they wanted me to focus on studies, which was natural. Cricket wasn't something we had planned. A friend told me about the Under-19 trials. Until then, I didn't even know they were happening," Auqib had told reporters after picking up a five-wicket haul on the opening day of the Delhi vs Jammu & Kashmir Ranji Trophy match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in November 2025.Like countless youngsters in Kashmir, his cricketing education began with tennis-ball matches. The transition to leather-ball cricket, however, brought a different challenge."The most basic thing a fast bowler needs is a turf wicket," he had said. "Baramulla had turf, but you couldn't bowl there wearing spikes. So I had to travel to Srinagar to practice."The one-and-a-half-hour journey from Baramulla to Srinagar became part of his routine. Hours on the road simply to bowl a few overs on a proper surface. For many aspiring cricketers, inadequate facilities become a convenient excuse. Auqib never allowed himself that luxury."If you want to play for India, these things cannot become excuses. If you want it badly enough, you have to do it."Back-to-back rippers Karun Nair Smaran Ravichandran Auqib Nabi and J&K are on a roll in the Final Updates https://t.co/G0ytZLEyNB@IDFCFIRSTBank | #RanjiTrophypic.twitter.com/r9QAH28O8f BCCI Domestic (@BCCIdomestic) February 26, 2026 That philosophy continues to define him.The philosophy kept motivating him day in and day out, but it was his obsession with learning that made him the bowler he is today."When he first joined the J&K team for the Buchi Babu Trophy in Salem in 2023, he could only bowl the outswinger. But he wanted to bowl both ways. So I started working on his inswing," P. Krishnakumar, Jammu & Kashmir's bowling coach, told TimesofIndia.com."He has a great wrist position, which is one of his biggest strengths," he said. There were no shortcuts, and Nabi knew it. He started working on his inswing with Krishnakumar in the nets, and the results began to show in the 2024-25 season."There were a few biomechanical issues as well. I addressed them and rectified them. From the second year, the results started coming. He learnt how to use the ball, how to bowl in the first, second and third sessions. He started identifying batters' weaknesses. He worked on his preparation. Last season he came all guns blazing and we won the Ranji Trophy," he said. The inswing eventually became his biggest weapon. Later, he added the scrambled seam delivery to his arsenal, making himself a far more complete bowler than the one Krishnakumar first saw in Salem.Interestingly, Auqib says the biggest transformation wasn't technical."I have changed my mindset more than anything else. Earlier, I used to think only about taking wickets. Now I just focus on bowling in good areas. Whether the ball swings in or away, my job is to keep hitting the right length," he said. That change has also altered how he views difficult bowling conditions. Flat Indian pitches often test the patience of fast bowlers. Rather than searching for magic deliveries, Auqib has learned to trust the basics."Whether it's the new ball or the old ball, your basics have to stay strong. You have to keep bowling in good areas."His domestic performances did not go unnoticed. He earned an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract worth Rs 8.40 crore with the Delhi Capitals. However, his first IPL season did not go according to plan as he failed to take a single wicket in five matches. But he already knows how he wants to use the money he earned from the IPL. He plans to build an academy in Baramulla."I'd like to open an academy," Nabi had earlier told TimesofIndia.com. "There's absolutely nothing here. When I started playing, I had to go to Bengaluru for training and play lower-division matches there. I want to find and train more Auqib Nabis from Baramulla."Now, with an India call-up, Nabi has added another feather to his cap.Borrowed spikes taught him gratitude. Long journeys taught him perseverance. His obsession with learning the inswing taught him that improvement rarely comes overnight. Together, they have shaped a fast bowler who believes the path to bigger dreams isn't built on excuses or shortcuts, but on showing up every day and bowling one good ball after another.

Blue Jays Trade For Jos Soriano
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 26: Jos Soriano #59 of the Los Angeles Angels pitches against the San Francisco Giants in the bottom of the first inning of a major league baseball game at Oracle Park on July 26, 2026 in San Francisco, California. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesSo sell off a starting pitcher one day, buy a starting pitcher the next. The Jays have picked up 27-year-old Jos Soriano from the Angels. Jos Soriano is a very good pitcher, and much younger than Kevin Gausman. He has a 3.29 ERA in 22 starts this year, with a 2.7 bWAR. Batters are hitting .217/.311/.321 against him. Hes a ground ball pitcher, but has 127 strikeouts in 123 innings. Hes also leading the league with 57 walks. And hes under team control through the 2028 season. It gives the Jays another top of the rotation starter to go with Dylan Cease (and Trey Yesavage) for the next couple of years at least.Going to the Angels are:Arjun Nimmala, who the Jays were talking up over the last couple of years. There was a Sportsnet profile showing him going to India. He was number 2 on our prospect list before the season and was doing well as a 20-year-old in New Hampshire, hitting .279/.355/.451, after having a poor second half of the 2025 season. It might suggest the Jays think a lot of Jo Jo Parker. Or, Nimmala is just who they needed to have in the deal to get Soriano.Eddie Micheletti Jr., an outfielder, who was hitting .251/.347/.454 at age 24 in New Hampshire.Angel Rivero, a 19-year-old pitcher, who has a 2.36 ERA in the Florida Coast League with 52 strikeouts and 23 walks in 42 innings. Welcome to the Jays Jos. We hope you can win a lot of 2-1, 1-0 type games. Jays, if you could wait a little later in the day to make these moves for us bloggers who are in western Canada, I would appreciate it. But thanks for the fun trade.

Arsenal have opening bid for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes rejected
Arsenals initial offer for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes has been knocked back by the Magpies, the Press Association understands. Speculation surrounding the Brazil internationals potential move to the Gunners has intensified, with direct lines of communication now established between the two Premier League clubs.A significant disparity in valuation is believed to exist for the midfielder, who has netted 31 goals in 195 appearances for Newcastle since his 40 million transfer from Lyon in January 2022. However, the rejection of this opening bid is unlikely to deter Arsenal, especially given indications that Guimaraes is keen to swap St James Park for the Emirates Stadium this summer.Newcastle are understandably reluctant to see another first-choice star depart. The club have already lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer to Barcelona and Tottenham, respectively. While their hands may be tied if Guimaraes is set on leaving, the club would only sanction a transfer if their financial terms are fully met.Newcastle have rejected Arsenals first bid for Guimaraes (PA Wire)A repeat of last summers Alexander Isak saga, which saw the Swede go on strike to force a British record 125 million move to Anfield, appears improbable. Guimaraes is scheduled to join his Newcastle teammates at a pre-season training camp in La Manga on Monday, having been granted an extended break following his World Cup commitments with Brazil. The Magpies have been active in the transfer market, with Lukas Hornicek becoming their fifth summer signing on Monday. He joins fellow goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, winger Bazoumana Toure, and midfield duo Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba amidst a period of significant change. The club is also currently without a head coach following Eddie Howes departure on Friday, though German Matthias Jaissle is understood to be close to being appointed as his successor.Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last season and will not be able to offer Guimaraes European football in the upcoming campaign.Meanwhile, Arsenal are looking to bolster their squad ahead of their title defence, with the Gunners having only signed one outfield player, Christos Tzolis, so far this summer. The north London club have also been linked with Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr.
