Charlie Cresswell switches Toulouse for Rennes
Charlie Cresswell switches Toulouse for RennesEnglish defender Charlie Cresswell has joined Stade Rennes on a five-year contract. The former England youth international left Leeds United for Toulouse in the summer of 2023 after having come through the academy at the West Yorkshire side. The Preston-born player spent two seasons with Toulouse, featuring 66 times in total scoring eight goals and making five assists. He has now made the swap to Rennes where he has signed until 2031."There's been a lot of talk about my signing with Rennes these past few weeks," Cresswell said on joining Les Rouge et Noirs."Finally arriving here and making this project a reality is fantastic. I'm really very happy. I had two wonderful years in Toulouse, I couldn't have hoped for better, but football is cyclical and the prospect of playing in European competition was a very good reason. The club has an interesting project and I think it will be an excellent team this year. I hope we'll achieve great things."View this post on InstagramA post shared by Stade Rennais F.C. Packers bringing back McCallan Castles to help TE depth at camp
With injuries mounting at tight end, the Green Bay Packers are bringing back a familiar face who was recently in Green Bay. The team will sign tight end McCallan Castles before Tuesday's practice to add depth at the position, per Bill Huber of Packers on SI.Castles, who went undrafted out of Tennessee in 2024, signed with the Packers practice squad in November of last season. He spent the rest of the season there before signing a futures deal to return to the Packers offseason roster. The team released him a week before the 2026 NFL draft. The Packers need Castles back with Tucker Kraft not participating in team periods, Luke Musgrave on the PUP list with a neck injury and both RJ Maryland (hamstring) and Luke Lachey (foot/ankle) out after suffering new injuries. Maryland didn't practice Monday; Lachey dropped out of practice and was in a walking boot after. Castles was part of a big group of tryout players who were in Green Bay last week. He previously spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams but has never appeared in a regular season game.At 6-4 and 244 pounds, Castles ran the 40-yard dash in 4.67 seconds, hit 37.5" in the vertical leap, covered 10-6 in the broad jump and finished 16 reps in the bench press. His Relative Athletic Score was 8.59 out of 10.0. During his final collegiate season, Castles caught 22 passes and scored five receiving touchdowns, including a score against Alabama and another in Tennessee's bowl game against Iowa.More of a move tight end, Castles played most of his snaps in the backfield and in the slot during the 2023 season at Tennessee.Castles will join Josh Whyle, Drake Dabney and Messiah Swinson as the available and healthy players on the Packers tight end depth chart. This article originally appeared on Packers Wire: Packers bringing back McCallan Castles to help TE depth at camp

Miami quarterback Darian Mensah, wide receiver Malachi Toney and running back Mark Fletcher Jr. were named to the watch list for the 2026 Maxwell Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday.Miami and Ohio State led all programs with three selections apiece among the 81 preseason candidates. The Maxwell Award has recognized the most outstanding player in college football annually since 1937.Entering his first season as the Hurricanes signal caller, Mensahdelivered a dominant 2025 season where heearned second-team All-ACC honors and was named a semifinalist for the Davey OBrien Awardhonoring the nations top quarterback. Mensahthrew for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdownscompared tosix interceptionsand was also selected as the MVP of the Sun Bowl.Toney delivered one of the most productive freshman seasons in Miami history in 2025. The Liberty City native earned ACC Rookie of the Year, ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year and FWAA Offensive Freshman of the Year honors. Toney set Miami single-season records with 109 receptions and 1,211 receiving yards while adding 10 touchdown catches. He was named a second-team All-American by The Associated Press and earned first-team All-ACC recognition at wide receiver.Fletcher rushed for 1,192 yards and 12 touchdowns during his junior campaign, earning third-team All-ACC honors. He added 140 receiving yards and two touchdown catches while starting 12 of Miamis 14 games. Fletcher established a College Football Playoff record with 507 rushing yards during the Hurricanes postseason run and enters his senior season ranked seventh in program history with 2,313 career rushing yards.Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Nov. 10, followed by the unveiling of three finalists Nov. 24. The winner will be announced Dec. 10 during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The Hurricanes open the 2026 season Sept. 4 at Stanford. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. on ESPN.A transfer from Duke, Mensah is among the best and most productive quarterbacks in the country. He takes over the reigns of a loaded Miami offense, and looks to eclipse the ACC-leading passing numbers he posted a year ago. After only one season, Malachi Toney is already a household name, major superstar, and local legend in South Florida. His multi-faceted ability he was voted preseason all-ACC at three different positions is paired with a tireless work ethic and incredible athleticism. I cant wait to see how OC Shannon Dawson deploys Toney all over the field this season. The elder statesman of this trio and the heartbeat of the Canes program according to many, Fletcher Jr. has developed into a central cog of Miamis offense. Hes big, runs hard, and is tough to contend with over 4 quarters of play. Fletcher Jr. was always known to us, but burst onto the national scene with a dominant run of performance in last years College Football Playoffs. Back for his senior year, he looks to cement his legacy at Miami with a championship. Congrats to all 3 players, but this is just the beginning. Lets get to work! Go Canes

5 Tennessee football players besides QBs that intrigue us in preseason
Tennessee football preseason practice has arrived, so its time to start hyping and overanalyzing every player at every position on the 2026 roster. On this podcast episode of "The Volunteer State," beat writerAdam Sparksand columnistJohn Adamsdiscuss not-so-obvious players who could impact the Vols' season. And there's one big caveat: No quarterbacks. This list includes players who arent on preseason watch lists for all-conference honors. Theyre underrated for whatever reason. Theyre not the top transfer or a five-star freshman. And some are viewed as second-fiddle players in terms of interest at their position.Sparks presented five under-the-radar players that intrigue him, and Adams reacted. To hear the full discussion, listen to the hour-long podcast. Here are those five intriguing players and why they were selected.Tight end Ethan DavisThere was a time when Ethan Davis was seen as a young rising star at tight end. But he was overshadowed by transfers like McCallan Castles, Holden Staes and Miles Kitselman. In 2026, Davis has arrived at a now-or-never point in his career. This is Davis' fourth year on campus (hes a redshirt junior). Hes flashed talent but never fully broken out. He struggled as a blocker early in his career and with injuries after that. Davis could be an All-SEC tight end, but hes had only 390 yards and four TDs in his career.Sparks is eager to see if Davis finally puts it all together. He and Adams discussed the options at tight end.Wide receiver Radarious JacksonRadarious Jackson is a sophomore competing for the third wide receiver spot alongside Braylon Staley and Mike Matthews. That spot could go to five-star freshman TK Keys or sophomore Travis Smith. Redshirt freshman Joakim Dodson could also get into the mix.Jackson showed grit last season, returning from a midseason collarbone injury to make four catches in the final three games against Florida, Vanderbilt and Illinois in the Music City Bowl.Sparks wants to see if Jackson can be the latest UT wide receiver to thrive in his second season in the offense. Jalin Hyatt, Squirrel White, Donte Thornton, Chris Brazzell, Matthews and Staley did that in Year 2.Adams admitted he's more interested in Keys, the blue-chip freshman. He and Sparks discussed the wide receiver competition.Running back Javin GordonTulane transfer Javin Gordon rushed for 516 yards and five TDs for a College Football Playoff team last season. He's competing with sophomores Daune Morris and Justin Baker for the backup running back spot behind 1,000-yard rusher DeSean Bishop.Gordon flashed some of his ability with a 62-yard TD run in Tennessee's Orange and White spring game.Sparks wants to see if Gordon's decisive one-cut style makes him the best fit for coach Josh Heupel's rushing offense. Adams said he's more intrigued by Morris' versatile, big-play ability.Defensive end Tyree WeathersbyLike Davis, Tyree Weathersby started his career with a lot of promise, but injuries stalled his progress.Weathersby played well in spurts last season, but he was behind Dominic Bailey and Tyre West on the depth chart at defensive end. He's now the projected starter in 2026.Sparks likes that Weathersby had the highest grade in tackling of any UT defender last season, according to Pro Football Focus. Adams is more interested in Tulane transfer Jordan Norman at edge rusher.Weatherby and Norman could impact one another's playing time despite being at different positions. That depends on the imagination of defensive coordinator Jim Knowles' in his scheme, Sparks explained.Nickelback Qua MossKansas State transfer Qua Moss is a veteran who goes into preseason as the projected starter at Star position, what UT calls its nickelback. Hes a prototypical climber in the portal era. He went from junior college to FCS program West Georgia to Kansas State and finally to Tennessee.Moss is an under-the-radar guy in this secondary because UT added eight defensive backs from the portal. TJ Metcalf (Michigan) and Kayin Lee (Auburn) drew a lot of attention. DeJuan Lane (Penn State) played under UT's defensive coaches last season with the Nittany Lions. But Moss was a big portal priority for the Vols.Adams said Sparks convinced him of Moss' importance.
