Wrigley Field gave Tarik Skubal a taste of what's ahead for a Dodgers team playing the villain that 'ruined baseball'
CHICAGO Before Tarik Skubal took the mound for his much-anticipated debut in Dodger Blue on Tuesday, a plane flew over Wrigley Field during batting practice with a banner that read THE DODGERS RUINED BASEBALL. That would be just the beginning of his not-so-warm welcome to the Friendly Confines. All eyes in the baseball world were going to be watching Skubals outing, and the reception from the North Side crowd reflected the moment. The fans are what create the environment, Skubal said. It's a ton of fun to play in front of crowds like that. Even if they're booing me or whatever it is. I think that's what makes the game of baseball really fun, the competition really fun, and the atmosphere is really fun.I'm sure that's not going to be the only rowdy atmosphere on the road. I plan on pitching in front of those atmospheres for the rest of the season, and then obviously when it comes postseason.Tarik Skubal went six innings in his first start as a Dodger on Tuesday in Chicago. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)Michael Reaves via Getty ImagesAbout those boos: As soon as the feet of the back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner hit the top step of the dugout to go warm up, the jeers rained down. They didnt stop until he walked into the visitors bullpen and immediately resumed as soon as he walked back out.Even for a pitcher as accomplished as Skubal, the nerves and anticipation was real. But as he took the mound against one of the hottest hitters on the planet in Pete Crow-Armstrong, Skubal did what he always does.Skubal worked a 2-2 count against Crow-Armstrong before freezing the Cubs leadoff man with a 99-mph fastball low and away for his first strikeout as a Dodger.Going to bed last night, excited. It felt like my major league debut, Skubal said. Kind of the same type of vibe in terms of the nerves running through. Baseball is baseball. The game's the game. Its my job to just go out there and compete and do what I can and try to put our team in a position to win a ballgame. That's all I can ask myself to do. But the game is always just the game.Between the boos and jeers from the Wrigley faithful, Skubal gave the Dodgers a chance to win Tuesday evening. He pitched six innings and allowed two runs with two walks and six strikeouts in L.A.s 5-1 loss.It was awesome, shortstop Mookie Betts said. He pitched great. Only gave up, what, two runs? Im glad hes on our side.Skubal is just one of the many highly-anticipated debuts the Dodgers have had in recent years. Since 2023, the likes of Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell and many more have had that first game as a Dodger. And even though hes seen plenty of these types of games, manager Dave Roberts doesnt take them for granted.I intentionally try to not get jaded on moments like this, because I think the fans, the media, the players get excited about this, Robers said before the game. I try to acknowledge that its not just another game. Yeah, its one of 162, but I do think that Tarik Skubal making a start for the Dodgers is a big deal for baseball and for Dodger fans. I think that is acknowledging and not trying to minimize something that is obvious.Skubal has been the most talked about man in the sport over the past three months, which is hard to do when you play on the same team as Shohei Ohtani. And now that he plays for baseballs villain in the Dodgers, the response he received Tuesday in Chicago is going to be his new reality. There was some extra focus on him, Roberts said after Skubals Dodger debut. But as far as you know, the first two games, there's a lot of focus on us. There's a lot of energy, good energy. We've come to expect that. But yeah, I do think that Tarik will get that kind of reception every time he toes the rubber.

Liverpool decide against activating Jarell Quansahs 70m buyback clause
Liverpool decide against activating Jarell Quansahs 70m buyback clauseLiverpool have no plans to bring Jarell Quansah back to Anfield despite facing a defensive injury crisis ahead of the new Premier League season, talkSPORT reports.Liverpool have an option to re-sign the 23-year-old defender from Bayer Leverkusen through a 70 million buyback clause, but theyve decided against pursuing the deal.Interestingly, this comes at a time when Liverpool are dealing with several defensive concerns.Liverpool stalwart Joe Gomez is expected to miss the start of the season after sustaining an injury in the Reds 4-2 victory over Sunderland in their pre-season curtain-raiser.Highly rated youngsters Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are both still working their way back to full fitness after lengthy injury setbacks. However, rather than re-signing the special Quansah, Liverpool are placing their trust in the development of Jacquet and Leoni. They believe both defenders have the quality to become important players in the future.Jacquet arrived from Stade Rennais in a deal worth around 60m, making him one of the most expensive defenders in Liverpools history. However, his progress was interrupted by a serious shoulder injury suffered while on loan in France during the second half of last season. The 21-year-old is still recovering from the issue, although lingering discomfort has prevented him from making his Liverpool debut.Leoni is in a similar predicament. The Italian teenager made a promising first impression after joining from Parma but suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury shortly after his debut in the EFL Cup.The 19-year-old is close to returning to full fitness, but hell need time to regain sharpness. Liverpool have struggled to bring in defensive reinforcements over the past year. They failed to sign Marc Guehi before he joined Manchester City and lost Ibrahima Konate to La Liga giants Real Madrid on a free transfer.Meanwhile, captain Virgil van Dijk has also yet to feature under new manager Andoni Iraola after being given an extended break for his World Cup participation.

Newcastle Agree 75 Million Bruno Guimaraes Deal With Arsenal: Breaking
NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, ENGLAND - JANUARY 13: Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle Unitedduring the Carabao Cup Semi Final First Leg match between Newcastle United and Manchester City at St James' Park on January 13, 2026 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. (Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesFor weeks, Newcastle United insisted they had no intention of losing another cornerstone of the squad as Arsenal continued circling one of the clubs biggest stars. Negotiations dragged on through rejected bids, conflicting reports and growing uncertainty, with the saga becoming one of the defining stories of the summer. That standoff now appears to have reached its conclusion.According to Chronicle Lives Lee Ryder, Newcastle and Arsenal have reached a breakthrough in negotiations that puts Bruno Guimaraes on the verge of leaving St. James Park.Newcastle United look set to confirm a 75million deal with Arsenal for captain Bruno Guimaraes after finally agreeing to end the transfer saga, Ryder reported. With that, Newcastle are finally ready to part ways with their captain after the midfielder made it clear he wanted to complete the move to North London early in the summer. Ryder confirmed that Bruno spent time with new head coach Matthias Jaissle and club officials after joining the squad in La Manga, but maintained his desire to join Arsenal and never really engaged with his new boss and former teammates.Newcastles stance has always been that they dont want to sell their captain, Ryder wrote. However, they also want players who are committed to the club. Bruno did not want to discuss a new contract and his verdict was he wanted the move to North London. The report also sheds new light on how negotiations unfolded. According to Ryder, Arsenal initially valued Guimaraes far below Newcastles asking price, and ultimately got him for a fairly low fee compared to what some from Newcastles side reported, with figures about the Magpies demands being closer to 100 million than the final fee set to be paid by Arsenal. It is understood that a series of verbal offers were turned down and that Arsenals original valuation and first bid for Bruno was a paltry 45m with 10m add-ons, Ryder reported.Chronicle Live adds that Newcastle ultimately increased the value of the deal by around 30 million during negotiations, while also falling nearly 30 million short of that 100 million demand, with the final agreement expected to be a guaranteed 75 million paid entirely up front and without performance-related add-ons. In any case, the sale will represent a significant profit on the 38 million Newcastle paid Lyon in 2022 and immediately provide funds to reshape the squad, now without any excuse. How would you rate Newcastles handling of the Bruno saga? Was securing a guaranteed 75 million the right outcome, should the club have held out for more, or simply refuse to sell the teams captain at all?
